Abstract:The image matching methods based on regions have many advantages over the point matching techniques, and the most charming one is that once region being matched, all pixels are matched in theory. It would benefit many applications, such as object retrieval, stereo corresponding, semantic understanding a scene, object tracking. This paper proposes a new region matching algorithm based on consistency graph and region adjacency graphs. Firstly, the segmented images are transformed into region adjacency graphs, and the potential region pairs and the potential edge segment pairs are packaged in a consistency graph. Since the rightly matched pair always is accompanied by harmonious neighbourhoods, the right correspondences tend to cluster together, and the error corresponding relationship should have few chances to connect to any compatible neighbourhood. Thus, the solution space is greatly reduced and the corresponding relationship can be found in a polynomial computational complexity just by a simple method, such as seed-growth method. To the best of our knowledge, the method is the first one to match two images by region adjacency graphs and find the corresponding relationship in a polynomial computational complexity. Experiments on the existing benchmark show that the proposed method could quickly find the right corresponding relationship between images with illumination, rotation and affine transformation.
Free Form Surface Matching Using Motion Consistency

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to evaluate the possible point matches established by the traditional ICP algorithm in the process of matching two overlapping free form surfaces represented as two sets of unorganised points. While the existing methods mainly use feature matching to establish or evaluate possible correspondences between the surfaces to be matched, our novel approach applies motion consistency to evaluate the possible correspondences. In particular, while the existing methods assume that satisfying local structural constraints is a necessary condition for a pair of points to represent a real correspondence, our novel approach proves that satisfying global rigid motion constraints is a sufficient condition. A comparative study based on real images has shown that the proposed algorithm is accurate and robust for the matching of overlapping free form surfaces.
Spherical binary images retrieval with wavelet analysis

Abstract:Matching and retrieval of spherical binary images (SBIs) doesn't belong to the mainstream fields in digital image processing. While at certain peculiar occasions, it is also necessary to obtain the differences among them. In this paper, we will propose an effectual algorithm based on spherical wavelet scheme, which is derived from the planar one. The feature vector of a SBI is constructed using the resultant coefficients of wavelet decomposition. Then the comparison result of two SBIs can be achieved by the accumulative distance between their corresponding feature vectors. Later experiments show that the algorithm exhibits a satisfactory performance in comparatively accurate comparison of the SBIs. Copyright © 2010 Binary Information Press.

Abstract:A novel algorithm for compensating misalignment in optical spherical surface testing is presented in this paper. In this algorithm a best fit sphere is found to compensate misalignment. It is found by minimizing the deviations among the tested surface and itself. Both the numerical and real data experiments have proved the validity of this algorithm. A spherical surface is tested and successfully compensated misalignment at different level.

Abstract:Binary features allow for the effective comparison, fast calculation, and compact storage in image matching and localization. Binary feature extraction algorithms, however, tend to have poor mirror invariance, and search algorithms that match binary features have a lower inlier ratio. To address these issues, we employ a scale space pyramid to simulate human eye imaging and then detect FAST (FAST feature detector) points at each level in the pyramid and calculate the FAST point feature's orientation with an image intensity centroid. We propose circumferential binary string mirror invariance rules and a circumferential binary feature (CBF) extraction algorithm to enhance the mirror invariance of binary features, and a fast calculate bitmap (FCBM) algorithm and bitmap local sensitive hash (BMLSH) to improve the inlier ratio of matching binary features. Experiments show that the CBF performs well in mirror invariance and has stronger adaptability and that BMLSH searches inliers more efficiently.

Abstract:To address the issues of low measurement accuracy and unstable results when using binocular cameras to detect objects with sparse surface textures, weak surface textures, occluded surfaces, low-contrast surfaces, and surfaces with intense lighting variations, a three-dimensional measurement method based on an improved feature matching algorithm is proposed. Initially, features are extracted from the left and right images obtained by the binocular camera. The extracted feature points serve as seed points, and a one-dimensional search space is established accurately based on the disparity continuity and epipolar constraints. The optimal search range and seed point quantity are obtained using the particle swarm optimization algorithm. The zero-mean normalized cross-correlation coefficient is employed as a similarity measure function for region growing. Subsequently, the left and right images are matched based on the grayscale information of the feature regions, and seed point matching is performed within each matching region. Finally, the obtained matching pairs are used to calculate the three-dimensional information of the target object using the triangulation formula. The proposed algorithm significantly enhances matching accuracy while reducing algorithm complexity. Experimental results on the Middlebury dataset show an average relative error of 0.75% and an average measurement time of 0.82 s. The error matching rate of the proposed image matching algorithm is 2.02%, and the PSNR is 34 dB. The algorithm improves the measurement accuracy for objects with sparse or weak textures, demonstrating robustness against brightness variations and noise interference.

Annular Region Statistical Feature-based Recognition of Bearing Rings under Non-exact Positioning

Abstract:A monocular vision-based approach is proposed for inspecting the excircle filleting status of fixed-size bearing rings under non-exact positioning. Through cropping, grey-scaling, binary segmentation of the images grabbed from the top and bottom sides of bearing rings and extracting the black points sum in a specified annular region, the rings were classified as filleted or not based on the pre-established criterion. The methods of determining the critical parameters for binary segmentation as well as subsequent classification were discussed in details. Experimental results have showed that all the inspected bearing rings were recognized and classified correctly.
An Image Matching Algorithm Based On Singular Value Decomposition and Belief Propagation

Abstract:Finding correspondences between pair of images of the same scene is a key problem in computer vision. When matching images undergoes viewpoint change, partial occlusion, clutters and illumination change, there will be a lot of mismatches due to the limited repeatability and discriminative power of features. A robust matching algorithm that can remove false matches and propagate the correct ones to obtain more matches is proposed, thus improve the matching accuracy. Firstly, SURF (Speeded Up Robust Features) descriptors of each image are extracted, which can be used to build the proximity matrix. Secondly, SVD (Singular Value Decomposition) is performed on the proximity matrix to obtain the initial matches. Thirdly, the unique property of delaunay triangulation is adopted to refine the initial matches which can produce the maximum clique of the two delaunay graph. Finally, the lost matches are recovered with the constraint of dual graph of Voronoi. Experimental results on Oxford datasets indicate that the algorithm can improve match performance compared to the RANSAC-based method. At the same time, the stability of our method is better than RANSAC.
Binary Stereo Matching

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel binary-based cost computation and aggregation approach for stereo matching problem. The cost volume is constructed through bitwise operations on a series of binary strings. Then this approach is combined with traditional winner-take-all strategy, resulting in a new local stereo matching algorithm called binary stereo matching (BSM). Since core algorithm of BSM is based on binary and integer computations, it has a higher computational efficiency than previous methods. Experimental results on Middlebury benchmark show that BSM has comparable performance with state-of-the-art local stereo methods in terms of both quality and speed. Furthermore, experiments on images with radiometric differences demonstrate that BSM is more robust than previous methods under these changes, which is common under real illumination.
Local Stereo Matching Using Binary Weighted Normalized Cross-Correlation.

Abstract:Significant achievements have been attained in the field of dense stereo correspondence by local algorithms since the emergence of adaptive support weight by Yoon [1]. However, most algorithms suffer from photometric distortions and low-texture areas. In this paper, we present a novel stereo matching algorithm that can be sensitive to low-texture changes within support windows while keep insensitive to radiometric variations between left and right images. The algorithm performs Normalized Cross-Correlation with Binary Weighted support window (BWNCC) using k-nearest neighbors algorithm to resolve boundary problems. And, the proposed algorithm can be accelerated with transform domain convolution. We also propose to accelerate the BWNCC with transform domain computation. Experiment results confirm that the proposed method is robust, and has the comparable accuracy as the state-of-the-art.

Abstract:Image matching is one of the key technologies for digital Earth. This paper presents a combined image matching method for Chinese satellite images. This method includes the following four steps: (1) a modified Wallis-type filter is proposed to determine parameters adaptively while avoiding over-enhancement; (2) a mismatch detection procedure based on a global-local strategy is introduced to remove outliers generated by the Scale-invariant feature transform algorithm, and geometric orientation with bundle block adjustment is employed to compensate for the systematic errors of the position and attitude observations; (3) we design a novel similarity measure (distance, angle and the Normalized Cross-Correlation similarities, DANCC) which considers geometric similarity and textural similarity; and (4) we introduce a hierarchical matching strategy to refine the matching result level by level. Four typical image pairs acquired from Mapping Satellite-1, ZY-1 02C, ZY-3 and GeoEye-1, respectively, are used for experimental analysis. A comparison with the two current main matching algorithms for satellite imagery confirms that the proposed method is capable of producing reliable and accurate matching results on different terrains from not only Chinese satellite images, but also foreign satellite images.

Abstract:To solve the problem of image matching under complex conditions including strong noise corruption,partial occlusion etc.,a robust image matching algorithm was presented.Distance between points was redefined by use of circular restriction.Based on classical Hausdorff distance and the new definition of distance,a new similarity measure,i.e.,minimum maximum circular measure was defined.By applying the new measure to scene matching,and by using circular windows in the searching process,a minimum maximum circular measure based robust image matching approach was proposed.The algorithm may be used to match images with rotation,intensity contrast change,noise corruption,partial occlusion,and intensity saturation etc.The feasibility of the algorithm is analyzed theoretically,and the effectiveness of the algorithm is illustrated by multiple experiments.

Abstract:We present a fully automatic method for finding geometrically consistent correspondences while discarding outliers from the candidate point matches in two images. Given a set of candidate matches provided by scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) descriptors, which may contain many outliers, our goal is to select a subset of these matches retaining much more geometric information constructed by a mapping searched in the space of all diffeomorphisms. This problem can be formulated as a constrained optimization involving both the Beltrami coefficient (BC) term and quasi-conformal map, and solved by an efficient iterative algorithm based on the variable splitting method. In each iteration, we solve two subproblems, namely a linear system and linearly constrained convex quadratic programming. Our algorithm is simple and robust to outliers. We show that our algorithm enables producing more correct correspondences experimentally compared with state-of-the-art approaches.

A Reliable Algorithm for Image Matching Based on SIFT

Abstract:A novel algorithm is presented to make the results of image matching more reliable and accurate based on SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform). SIFT algorithm has been identified as the most resistant matching algorithm to common image deformations; however, if there are similar regions in images, SIFT algorithm still generates some analogical descriptors and provides many mismatches. This paper examines the local image descriptor used by SIFT and presents a new algorithm by integrating SIFT with two-dimensional moment invariants and disparity gradient to improve the matching results. In the new algorithm, decision tree is used, and the whole matching process is divided into three levels with different primitives. Matching points are considered as correct ones only when they satisfy all the three similarity measurements. Experiment results demonstrate that the new approach is more reliable and accurate.

Interpreting Sphere Images Using the Double-Contact Theorem

Abstract:An occluding contour of a sphere is projected to a conic in the perspective image, and such a conic is called a sphere image. Recently, it has been discovered that each sphere image is tangent to the image of the absolute conic at two double-contact image points. The double-contact theorem describes the properties of three conics which all have double contact with another conic. This theorem provides a linear algorithm to find the another conic if these three conics are given. In this paper, the double-contact theorem is employed to interpret the properties among three sphere images and the image of the absolute conic. The image of the absolute conic can be determined from three sphere images using the double-contact theorem. Therefore, a linear calibration method using three sphere images is obtained. Only three sphere images are required, and all five intrinsic parameters are recovered linearly without making assumptions, such as, zero-skew or unitary aspect ratio. Extensive experiments on simulated and real data were performed and shown that our calibration method is an order of magnitude faster than previous optimized methods and a little faster than former linear methods while maintaining comparable accuracy.
Binary SIFT: towards efficient feature matching verification for image search

Abstract:Recently, great advance has been made in large-scale content-based image search. Most state-of-the-art approaches are based on the Bag-of-Visual-Words model with local features, such as SIFT. Visual matching between images is obtained by vector quantization of local features. Two feature vectors from different images are considered as a match, if they are quantized to the same visual word, even though the L2-distance between them is large. Thus, it may introduce many false positive matches. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose to generate binary SIFT from the original SIFT descriptor. The L2-distance between original SIFT descriptors is demonstrated to be well kept with the metric of Hamming distance between the corresponding binary SIFT. Two feature vectors quantized to the same visual word are considered as a valid match only when the Hamming distance between their binary SIFT vectors is below a threshold. With our binary SIFT, most false positive matches can be effectively and efficiently identified and removed, which greatly improves the accuracy of large-scale image search. We evaluate the proposed approach by conducting partial-duplicate image search on a one-million image database. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our scheme.
Image Matching for Non-Planar Scenes under Wide Baseline Views

Abstract:A match propagation algorithm was developed to improve the image match quality for non-planar scenes under wide baseline views. The traditional algorithm is based on the implicit assumption that the region centered on any pixel in an image satisfies the local coplanar situation. The algorithm breaks through the traditional assumption. After determining the co-planar conditions of local regions around the initial matches,the local affine transformation and constraints of global epipolar geometry are used to expand new matches to obtain the quasi-dense matches. The matches can be propagated into the regions whose local transformation is different from the initial one. Experiments show that the algorithm can improve the matching quality and increase the matching number under wide baseline and non-planar scenes.

Abstract:In the field of 3D model matching and retrieval, an effective method for feature extraction is spherical harmonic or its mutations, and is acted on the spherical images. But the obtainment of spherical images from 3D models is very time-consuming, which greatly restrains the responding speed of such systems. In this paper, we propose a quantitative evaluation of the whole process and give a detailed two-sided analysis based on the comparative size between pixels and voxels. The experiments show that the resultant optimized parameters are fit for the practical application and exhibit a satisfactory performance.
