Abstract:Reconfigurable computing has become a hot topic in research due to its high-performance and flexibility. In this paper we present a simulator called JRSim for mesh-based reconfigurable architectures. The purpose of this simulator is to provide a platform to evaluate new architectures, and to assist in analysis of algorithms as well as the visualization of their behavior. JRSim is a platform-independent tool which is implemented by Java. It supports flexible bus structure, user-defined function unit and dynamic reconfiguration. Case studies show that JRSim can simulate the behavior of mesh-based reconfigurable systems correctly and efficiently. This simulator can be used to evaluate reconfigurable system design, or demonstrate the ability of reconfigurable system in an educational environment.

Abstract:Reconfigurable computing is a new paradigm based on changing the hardware to reconfigure the computation and the communication structure. Currently, various reconfigurable devices have been developed by researchers and the industry. These various architectures form a very large design space. Both application mapping and design space exploration need an abstract model for the architecture. In this paper, a generic parameterized model(PRAM) for reconfigurable architecture is presented. Based on this model, we also propose an architecture description language( RADL). The proposed PRAM and RADL are applied to describe some practical architectures. The experiment results show that this modeling method is able to describe complex, heterogeneous and multi-granularity architectures.

Abstract:We present a novel architecture of asynchronous reconfigurable computing array (ARCA) to seek the balance between performance and versatility. Advancing the completion detector of control circuit, a modified structure of asynchronous micropipeline based on DSDCVSL is discussed. The analysis and simulation of our ARCA have both resulted in high-performance and low-power consumption, and it can be used as an IP module integrated into a system on chip to built the reconfigurable computing platform. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:A hybrid finite volume-finite element method which can avoid overestimation of volume shared by each vertex in the meshing grid is proposed to solve the diffusive transport governed continuity equation. The simulation results demonstrate that the improved algorithm can eliminate unphysical distortions as compared to the conventional Scharfetter Gummel method. Based on the proposed algorithm, a parallel-computation simulator is developed for large-scale electrothermal simulation of resistive random access memory (RRAM) arrays, in which the domain decomposition method and J parallel adaptive unstructured mesh applications infrastructure are adopted. The validity, speedup, and scalability of the parallel simulator are investigated on the TianHe-2 supercomputer. Based on the simulated results, the electrothermal characteristics and reliability analysis of large-scale RRAM arrays are investigated in detail.

Abstract:A high-performance numerical scheme is proposed for fully coupled electrothermal simulation of electrothermal effects in resistive switching random access memory (RRAM) arrays. To enhance its capability for fast solving large scale problem, a J parallel adaptive unstructured mesh infrastructure and domain decomposition method (DDM) based double-level parallel scheme is employed to implement a parallel simulator. The performance of the developed simulator is validated by comparing with that of COMSOL Multiphysics. Further, the influence of conductive filament (CF) shape in the RRAM arrays on their electrothermal characteristics are investigated and analyzed.

Abstract:Cryptographic algorithms are usually compute-intensive and more efficiently implemented in hardware than in software. By taking advantage of FPGA technology, some work offers high performance and flexible solutions for cryptographic algorithms. But FPGAs still have some drawbacks. To overcome inherent shortages of FPGA, a novel asynchronous reconfigurable cryptographic engine (ARCEN) is introduced. In this architecture, reconfigurable cryptographic array is the kernel. It routes signals asynchronously between adjacent cells through Neighbor-to-Neighbor wires with 4-phase handshaking protocol. Computation circuit for reconfigurable cell is developed with modified DSDCVS logic. Experiment results show that the architecture has a better performance than FPGA.
Modeling and Benchmarking Computing-in-Memory for Design Space Exploration.

Abstract:The bottleneck between the limited memory bandwidth and high speed processing demands is the main cause of problems associated with high volume of data transfers in data-intensive applications. As a possible remedy to these issues, computing-in-memory (CiM) enables a subset of logic and arithmetic operations to be performed where the data resides, i.e., inside the memory. Various CiM designs have been proposed to date, based on different technologies. Given the variety of options available, picking the right design option for a system/application can be a complex task. When choosing a CiM design, it is important to establish evaluation conditions that are as uniform as possible to make a fair choice between available design options. In this paper, we describe a methodology for an uniform benchmarking of CiM designs. Our approach evaluates devices/circuits, arrays and the overall impact of CiM to a system with a framework based on Eva-CiM. As a case study, we analyze the array-level performance of 7 recent CiM designs implemented with SRAM, DRAM, FeFET-RAM, STT-MRAM, SOT-MRAM, and RRAM. After we identify that the FeFET-RAM-based design shows promising energy and delay savings at the array level, we carry out a system level evaluation showing that FeFET-RAM-based CiM outperforms a CMOS SRAM CiM baseline by an average of 60% across a set of 17 benchmarks (with respect to energy savings). Regarding speedups, both technologies offer virtually the same benefit of about 1.5X when compared to a situation where processing does not happen in memory.

To save computing storage, the 3D hexahedral elements are used to discretize the structures. The validity of the in-house simulator is investigated first, and then the thermal crosstalk effect of RRAM array is studied base on simulation results.

Abstract:More and more reconfigurable devices have been used to accelerate specific computation in traditional computing systems. But isolate reconfigurable system has some shortcomings such as limited computation ability, low utilization of reconfigurable devices. In this paper, a networked adaptive array of reconfigurable computing nodes was proposed, which is composed of host and reconfigurable devices. Via sharing reconfigurable resources among nodes in the system, the ability of computation of one node is enhanced and the utilization ratio of reconfigurable resources is increased. The experiment result shows that about 19.5%-48.2% execution time could be reduced by using 2-5 nodes in the array comparing with a single node for heavy workload.

Abstract:Partially reconfigurable devices are able to execute several tasks in parallel and allow for on-line reconfiguration. To manage such devices at runtime, the scheduler in the operating system has two more modules for hardware tasks: placer and loader. Placer is to find appropriate places in reconfigurable devices and loader is to do the reconfiguration for hardware tasks. In order to satisfy the timing constraints in hard real-time systems, we propose a fast online real-time scheduling algorithm. Our algorithm will be based on correct empty resource management and will utilize the reconfiguration reuse. The experiments show that the developed scheduler leads to substantial performance gains.

Abstract: Compute-in-memory (CiM) is a promising approach to improving the computing speed and energy efficiency in dataintensive applications. Beyond existing CiM techniques of bitwise logic-in-memory operations and dot product operations, this paper extends the CiM paradigm with FAST, a new shift-based inmemory computation technique to handle high-concurrency operations on multiple rows in an SRAM. Such high-concurrency operations are widely seen in both conventional applications (e.g. the table update in a database), and emerging applications (e.g. the parallel weight update in neural network accelerators), in which low latency and low energy consumption are critical. The proposed shift-based CiM architecture is enabled by integrating the shifter function into each SRAM cell, and by creating a datapath that exploits the high-parallelism of shifting operations in multiple rows in the array. A 128-row 16-column shiftable SRAM in 65nm CMOS is designed to evaluate the proposed architecture. Postlayout SPICE simulations show average improvements of 4.4x energy efficiency and 96.0x speed over a conventional fully-digital memory-computing-separated scheme, when performing the 8-bit weight update task in a VGG-7 framework.

Abstract:This paper proposes a mixed-level simulator for dynamic coarse-grained reconfigurable processor (CGRP), called ReSSIM (reconfigurable system simulation implementation mechanism), and the corresponding simulation tool-chain, including task compiler, profiler and debugger. A generic modeling methodology supporting convenient extension of on-chip modules is also proposed. In order to explore the details of the interested modules while maintaining reasonable simulation speed, RCA (reconfigurable computing array), the key reconfigurable device in ReSSIM, is modeled on cycle-accurate level, while the other modules are modeled on transaction level. The typical parameters of RCA are scalable and adjustable, which helps the architects to explore the massive details of the reconfigurable device. Experiment shows that simulation speedup achieved ranges from 9.26× to 18.39× compared with VCS (Synopsys verilog compiler simulator) when running three computingintensive kernel tasks of H.264 decoding algorithm—IDCT (inverse discrete cosine transform), deblocking and MC-chroma (motion compensation). Simulation speed for a set of real applications, such as MPEG4, G.729 and EFR, is 35× slower than the corresponding native executions (i.e. measured from the real chip). And the relative simulation errors are 11% less than the measured IPC (instructions per cycle) of the real chip.

Abstract:Memristor-based circuits offer low hardware costs and in-memory computing, but full-memristive circuit integration for different algorithm remains limited. Cellular automata (CA) has been noticed for its well-known parallel, bio-inspired, computational characteristics. Running CA on conventional chips suffers from low parallelism and high hardware costs. Establishing dedicated hardware for CA remains elusive. We propose a recirculated logic operation scheme (RLOS) using memristive hardware and 2D transistors for CA evolution, significantly reducing hardware complexity. RLOS’s versatility supports multiple CA algorithms on a single circuit, including elementary CA rules and more complex majority classification and edge detection algorithms. Results demonstrate up to a 79-fold reduction in hardware costs compared to FPGA-based approaches. RLOS-based reservoir computing is proposed for edge computing development, boasting the lowest hardware cost (6 components/per cell) among existing implementations. This work advances efficient, low-cost CA hardware and encourages edge computing hardware exploration.

Abstract:Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Arrays (CGRAs) provide sufficient flexibility in domain-specific applications with high hardware efficiency, which make CGRAs suitable for fast-evolving fields such as neural network acceleration and edge computing. To meet the requirement of the fast evolution, we propose FastCGRA, the modeling, mapping, and exploration platform for large-scale CGRAs. FastCGRA supports hierarchical architecture description and automatic switch module generation. Connectivity-aware packing and graph partition algorithms are designed to reduce the complexity of placement and routing. The graph homomorphism placement algorithm in FastCGRA enables efficient placement on large-scale CGRAs. The packing and placement algorithms cooperate with a negotiation-based routing algorithm to form an integral mapping procedure. FastCGRA can support the modeling and mapping of large-scale CGRAs with significantly higher placement and routing efficiency than existing platforms. The automatic switch module generation method can reduce the complexity of CGRA interconnection design. With these features, FastCGRA can boost the exploration of large-scale CGRAs.

Abstract:This paper introduces cycle-reconfigurable modules that enhance FPGA architectures with efficient support for dynamic data accesses: data accesses with accessed data size and location known only at runtime. The proposed module adopts new reconfiguration strategies based on dynamic FIFOs, dynamic caches, and dynamic shared memories to significantly reduce configuration generation and routing complexity. We develop a prototype FPGA chip with the proposed cycle-reconfigurable module in the SMIC 130-nm technology. The integrated module takes less than the chip area of 39 CLBs, and reconfigures thousands of runtime connections in 1.2 ns. Applications for large-scale sorting, sparse matrix-vector multiplication, and Memcached are developed. The proposed modules enable 1.4 and 11 times reduction in area-delay product compared with those applications mapped to previous architectures and conventional FPGAs.

Abstract:Computation-in-memory (CIM) chips offer an energy-efficient approach to artificial intelligence computing workloads. Resistive random-access memory (RRAM)-based CIM chips have proven to be a promising solution for overcoming the von Neumann bottleneck. In this paper, we review our recent studies on the architecture-circuit-technology co-optimization of scalable CIM chips and related hardware demonstrations. To further minimize data movements between memory and computing units, architecture optimization methods have been introduced. Then, we propose a device-architecture-algorithm co-design simulator to provide guidelines for designing CIM systems. A physics-based compact RRAM model and an array-level analog computing model were embedded in the simulator. In addition, a CIM compiler was proposed to optimize the on-chip dataflow. Finally, research perspectives are proposed for future development.

Abstract:Embedded applications have high requirements for computing speed, power consumption, and cost. Traditional computing models cannot meet the emerging application scenarios and requirements. In computing-intensive fields, fast Fourier transform (FFT) is a key technical means, but the implementation of this algorithm requires complex computation and required to be accelerated urgently. To solve the above problems, this paper proposed a FFT hardware acceleration method based on the coarse-grained reconfigurable array (CGRA). By mapping the FFT core operations to hardware units, the calculation speed can be significantly increased. Experimental results show that the proposed FFT acceleration method is more efficient than related implementations.

Abstract:The Euclidean Distance Transform (EDT) is a basic operation in computer vision, pattern recognition, and robotics. Fast computation of the EDT is needed since most of the applications using the EDT requires real-time computation. The authors propose a new and fast parallel algorithms for computing the EDT problem on the reconfigurable VLSI mesh model. It is shown that the VLSI complexity of the algorithm described is the same as those of other sequential algorithms and the mesh algorithm, while it uses much less time. To authors' best knowledge, this is the first constant-time EDT algorithm on any parallel computational model.
