Abstract:Assembly planning is a large scale and highly constrained combinatorial problem, including assembly sequence planning and assembly task planning. In order to reduce the computation complexity, this paper presents a knowledge-based approach to assembly planning. After analyzing the characteristics of connectors, typical knowledge base and standard knowledge base are built for assembly sequence planning. This research shows that the cases stored in typical or standard knowledge base can be applied to a given assembly planning problem. If similar or same structures in base do not give rise to useful plans for the provided structure, the system next generates feasible plans by geometric reasoning with the help of directed-connector knowledge. A novel approach for cooperative assembly task planning is proposed to improve the flexibility and reliability of the automated assembly system. By integrating geometric reasoning with knowledge-based reasoning, the computation complexity is reduced drastically and the assembly plans obtained are more feasible and practical.
Assembly Sequence Planning Using Directed-Connector Knowledge

Abstract:After analyzing the characteristics of directed-connectors, a uniform representation of parts is presented and the directed-connector knowledge is exploited for assembly sequence planning. By integrating geometry-based reasoning with knowledge-based reasoning, the computation complexity is reduced drastically and the assembly sequences obtained are more feasible and practical. In addition, free space graph is defined and its attributes are discussed. With the help of free space graphs, the approach can solve the problem of non-monotone assembly sequence planning successfully.

Abstract:Through analyzing the statuses of collaborative CAD technology, collaborative assembly (CA) design technology based on semantics in grid is promoted in point of the characters of large assembly. Using feature semantics, product data exchange and part modification of large assembly are implemented. Assembly semantics is the abstract and generalization of assembly constraints among parts. Research on product design based on semantics can prominently enhance the straight forwardness and efficiency of assembly design. Meanwhile, Grid computing technology enables a collection of grid computers to gain super computation power, so it can fast carry out manipulation and modification of large assembly. In this paper we present a novel CA system supporting heterogeneous CAD - GridCA, which is integrated with semantics and grid computing technology. A case study is further given to illustrate the effectiveness of the system.

Abstract:Assembly orders of components have direct influence on feasibility and efficiency of assembly process in manufacturing and are usually defined by experienced operators. To automate the assembly sequence generation process, we present a method using the idea of case-based reasoning, which can take advantage of experience of a reference assembly to generate the assembly sequence of a new assembly. First, a novel assembly representation method named assembly graph is present in which nodes indicating components' 3D shape information and edges indicating the geometry constraints. Second, a similar components retrieve process is conducted based on assembly graph representation. Then, the assembly sequence is generated by applying the assembly order of retrieved components to the new ones. Next, the generated sequence is revised to satisfy the inherent constraints in the new assembly which is formulated as a contact graph. Finally, the revised sequence is stored into a case library with corresponding assembly model. We apply the proposed method to generate assembly sequences for chair assemblies and experimental results show its effectiveness and flexibility.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The semantic information of process documents for the assembly of complex components plays an important role in the guidance of assembly operations and the feasibility evaluation of process plans. There are many types of semantic elements contained in assembly process documents. The semantic relationship between assembly elements is complex. Additionally, there is a lack of effective modeling method to deal with the implicit associative semantic knowledge that exists among existing assembly process cases. In this case, it is a great challenge to use the professional knowledge in assembly process documents to guide the intelligent decision-making of assembly process planning and the intelligent analysis of assembly process enforceability evaluation. In this paper, a knowledge graph-driven assembly process generation and evaluation method for complex components is proposed. An APKG (assembly process knowledge graph) model is built. A distributed graph embedding-based model SKGCN (sequence knowledge graph convolutional network) is designed to generate assembly process planning. Furthermore, model and knowledge dual-driven evaluation method for assembly sequences is presented. It provides assembly expert knowledge support for the evaluation method of interference detection of assembly sequence based on point cloud assembly feature recognition. Finally, the approach is evaluated by assembling an aero-engine compressor rotor.

Abstract:Assembly process planning is a highly knowledge-intensive work. As collaborative design and manufacturing is getting increasingly popular especially for complex assembly products, assembly process planning knowledge model should be comprehensive, recognizable and reusable. Ontology meets the requirements as a semantic tool providing a source of shared and precisely defined terms that can be utilized to describe both knowledge and concepts. Many researchers have studied the ontology modeling for assembly process planning domain and they mainly focus on the geometry information, tolerance type and manufacture environment respectively. This paper presents an assembly process design knowledge ontology considering assembly requirement, spatial information, assembly operation and assembly resource. It has covered almost every important concept related to assembly process planning knowledge.
An Approach in Study of Disassembly Direction in Intelligent Assembly Planning

Abstract:A novel approach to find the feasible disassembly direction set is presented by applying discrete spherical algorithm to analyzing assembly constraints. This approach computes the range of all feasible local directions of removal for the component and considers the mating conditions of components in calculating disassemblability and feasible removal direction for the component. The global disassembly direction is finally determined by finding a collision free path for a component to be assembled. Experimental results show that the computation complexity of finding the disassembly direction can be reduced drastically and this method can be applied to engineering practice conveniently.

Abstract:Distributed product development requires collaborative work among team members. For the sake of supporting assembly planning activities involving geographically dispersed designers, this paper presents an approach of collaborative assembly sequence planning to validate the assemblability of parts and subassemblies rapidly. In order to increase the planning efficiency and support the collaborative planning, role-based model is exploited to compress or simplify the product. In role-based model, the B-rep models are simplified according to the permissions associated with the role, so the surfaces invisible from outside of the model are removed. In collaborative planning, the planning tasks are assigned to different designers that carry out the collaborative planning, respectively. In this paper, a knowledge-based approach is proposed to the assembly sequence planning problem. This research shows that the typical or standard CSBAT (Connection Semantics Based Assembly Tree) can be applied to a given assembly problem. This paper presents the structure of the Co-ASP (Collaborative Assembly Sequence Planning System) and provides an example to illustrate the collaborative planning approach. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Assembly planning plays a major role in the manufacturing industry. In order to reduce computational complexity, this paper presents a knowledge-based approach to the assembly sequence planning problem. The CSBAT (connection-semantics-based assembly tree) hierarchy proposed in this paper provides an appropriate way to consider both geometric information and non-geometric knowledge. In this research, the typical or standard CSBAT is applied to a given assembly problem. The structure of the KBASP (knowledge-based assembly sequence planning system) is proposed and there are different ways to construct plans for a CSBAT: by retrieving the typical base, by retrieving the standard base, and by geometric reasoning. The approach proposed in this paper can generate assembly sequences for each CSBAT directly, without the problem of merging plans for different child CSBATs. The application shows that the knowledge-based approach can reduce the computational complexity drastically and obtain more feasible and practical plans.

Abstract:In recent researches, an automatic and efficient way to solve the assembly planning for fixtures is still lacking. Based on the structural characteristics of fixtures, engineering semantics is introduced to define the function, type and component-set relationship of fixture components. Through trial disassembling confined on prior direction set, reasonable disassembly sequence and directions for each component can be derived, the reversion of which leads to the feasible assembly sequence. This method not only achieves the assembly planning for fixtures automatically and efficiently, but also ensures the rationality of the planning result.

Abstract:Virtual manufacturing (VM) has been proved in different industrial contexts as an effective technology to ensure competitivity and increase profit margins. This paper presents such a system named MEWS, short for module-based extensible integrated VM system. The system now contains 7 modules and owns good extensibility. One of the most important modules is assembling module. It has significant impact on the performance of the system. The adoption of hierarchical assembly model with discrete patches brings many benefits for the whole system as well as the assembling module itself. And the hybrid assembly sequence planning based on subassembly identification with human-interaction expands the planner's scope of application and enhances its robustness, while restricts human-interaction in hierarchical layers of the assembly model.

Abstract:Assembly mating constraints have significance in many different fields such as assembly design and assembly planning. This paper presents a novel approach for automatically recognizing assembly mating constraints from B-Rep model. It is composed of geometric reasoning and constraint verification. The general geometric reasoning rules are extended to handle the case of CAD modeling with tolerance and avoid some redundant constraints. According to the implicit assembly semantic, an algorithm based on the idea of mating cells identification is introduced for verifying and enhancing the validity of mating constraints resulting from geometric reasoning. Experimental results show that this approach can highly enhance the correctness and validity of automatic acquisition of mating constraints

Abstract:This paper describes the recent development of the subsystem of multi-solution planning in the Virtual Assembly Support System (VASS) project at Tsinghua University. This project's goal is to develop an assembly planning system which can assist designer directly or indirectly in product assembly planning, product designing and redesigning. First, we review the current research on assembly modeling simply; then, describe the assembly information modeling approach in the project and rule-based assembly process planning approach used in the subsystem. Finally, the architecture of the subsystem of VASS is introduced.

Abstract:With the application of virtual assembly (VA), product assemblability and design quality can be verified and improved dramatically. The virtual assembly architecture for assembly process planning was proposed. Then an integrated assembly model for assembly process planning was introduced, and the information and the way to get them and the structure of the model were discussed in detail. The virtual assembly architecture and the integrated assembly model were applied to a virtual assembly support system (VASS), and the application effects were demonstrated in an engineering project. As a result, the integrated assembly model can significantly support the assembly process planning.

Abstract:Aimed at the issue of dimensional constraint in the process of assembly variant design,a part information model of assembly was presented.The basic principle of assembly variant design was researched.A set of basic constraint groups were defined according to the mating relationship type among constituent parts of assembly,and the dimensional relationship model reflecting the relationship among constituent parts of each constraint group was established.With the help of tabular layouts of article characteristics technology,the top-down variant design process of assembly was realized.The feasibility of the model was verified through the variant design case of assembly trolley.The results show that the part information model and dimensional relationship model among constituent assembly parts can satisfy the requirement of dimensional transferring during variant design process,and support the variant design of assembly.

Abstract:Assembly sequence planning is a combinatorial optimization problem and plays a vital role in assembly process. In this article, a novel and simple sequence design mechanism is proposed to deal with assembly sequence planning problem. The proposed method combines assembly subset detection method with the characteristic of assembly sequence and uses precedence constraints to guarantee the feasibility of the assembly sequence. The method is compared with different popular metaheuristic algorithms and is verified to be successful in obtaining the optimal assembly sequence for complex assembly products.

Abstract:Evaluation and planning of assembly processes in virtual environments, especially large-scale virtual environments, have attracted much attention in the engineering community. However, the planning of complex assemblies in virtual environments is still hindered by limitations like insufficient frame rates, unnatural user interaction, as well as deficiencies in the processing of assembly constraints. This paper discusses some optimization techniques for the assembly planning of complex assemblies in a large-scale virtual environment such as CAVE. Specifically, the real-time display of complex assemblies, the natural and intuitive assembly operations, and a real-time collision detection algorithm for the assembly applications are presented.

Abstract:This paper proposes a semantics knowledge modeling approach for product assembly, which is suitable for virtual reality interaction. Assembly semantics knowledge is used to express design conception, constrain the relationship between parts, and encapsulate design knowledge in semantics knowledge modeling. Using assembly semantics, the designer is able to express design intention in engineer's language, which is natural and convenient for designer. In addition, the intelligence of the system can be promoted through the inference of implicit knowledge of semantics. These methods are implemented in the development of VIRDAS (VIrtual Reality Design and Assembly System) and several assembly examples are also given in this paper.

Abstract:We propose a task planner that incorporates with a virtual reality interface for 3D immersive interaction of CAD models and high-level task planning of mating processes. The planner is constructed with the following objectives: 3D immersive VR interface, assembly analysis, feature/constraint update, and assembly path planning. A virtual-assembly system has been developed based on the modeling features and mating constraints proposed in our approach. Our system supports a VR interface for performing task-oriented virtual assembly, constraint analysis, feature/constraint update during assembling, and collision-free assembly planning. An assembly task is described by the relationship of parts or subassemblies, translation of constraints and operation restrictions. Our task planner provides a virtual reality interface which allows users to freely navigate in the assembly environment, select one of the parts, and move it around in all directions. To accomplish the goal of a two-part assembly, the free motion of a 3D input device (e.g. 3D mouse) is restricted by both a collision-free path and allowable motion derived from mating constraints between the parts. The allowable motion with reduced degrees of freedom guides the user assembling the parts in a constrained direction or around a specified rotating axis. Any illegal motion that will possibly cause a collision or disabled movement is not allowed, which prompts a warning sound or error messages to alert the user. When two components are assembled, the two graphs are updated in such a way by joining the common attributes, removing those overlapped or duplicated ones after mating, and creating the new attributes or features that are produced. So a new attribute graph is generated for the new object.
