Abstract:In this paper, we summarize recent results and progress in state complexity research. We analyze why many basic state complexity problems were not solved earlier, in the sixties and seventies. We also suggest several future directions for this area of research.

Abstract:The power system complexity and its related research progress are introduced in terms of existence and evolution,and the relationship between existence complexity and evolution complexity is analyzed.The existence complexity contains the multilayer & inter-relevancy,nonlinear dynamics,randomness,real-time,social economics,openness,etc.,and the evolution complexity contains the serf-organization,synergetics,mutagenicity,and fractal dimension,etc.The theoretical framework of power system complexity study is proposed,including its basic concept,its comprehensive analysis method and system,the power system self -organized criticality,the power system network features,the simulation and prediction methods of power system cascading failures based on the complexity theory,its comprehensive integration technology,etc.The important topics and future work related to the research of power system complexity are pointed out.

Abstract:In the 1940's, Shannon applied his information theory to build a mathematical foundation for classical cryptography which studies how information can be securely encrypted and communicated. In the internet age, Turing's theory of computation has been summoned to augment Shannon's model and create new frameworks, under which numerous cryptographic applications have blossomed. Fundamental concepts, such as ``information" and ``knowledge transfer", often need to be re-examined and reformulated. The amalgamation process is still on-going in view of the many unsolved security issues. In this talk we give a brief overview of the background, and discuss some of the recent developments in complexity-based cryptography. We also raise some open questions and explore directions for future work.

Abstract:Theoretical complexity is a vital subfield of computer science that enables us to mathematically investigate computation and answer many interesting queries about the nature of computational problems. It provides theoretical tools to assess time and space requirements of computations along with assessing the difficultly of problems - classifying them accordingly. It also garners at its core one of the most important problems in mathematics, namely, the $\textbf{P vs. NP}$ millennium problem. In essence, this problem asks whether solution and verification reside on two different levels of difficulty. In this thesis, we introduce some of the most central concepts in the Theory of Computing, giving an overview of how computation can be abstracted using Turing machines. Further, we introduce the two most famous problem complexity classes $\textbf{P}$ and $\textbf{NP}$ along with the relationship between them. In addition, we explicate the concept of problem reduction and how it is an essential tool for making hardness comparisons between different problems. Later, we present the problem of Boolean Satisfiability (SAT) which lies at the center of NP-complete problems. We then explore some of its tractable as well as intractable variants such as Horn-SAT and 3-SAT, respectively. Last but not least, we establish polynomial-time reductions from 3-SAT to some of the famous NP-complete graph problems, namely, Clique Finding, Hamiltonian Cycle Finding, and 3-Coloring.

Abstract:With rapid advances in technology, it appears that computing and communication devices based on quantum principles may become available in the not too distant future. A central question addressed by the emerging research field quantum computational complexity is: how much can quantum devices speed up computation and communication over classical devices? In this talk we discuss recent developments in quantum computational complexity regarding communication complexity, query complexity and interactive proofs. We also examine directions for future research.

Abstract:The topological entropy of a topological dynamical system, introduced in a foundational paper by Adler, Konheim and McAndrew [Trans. Am. Math. Soc., 1965], is a nonnegative number that measures the uncertainty or disorder of the system. Comparing with positive entropy systems, zero entropy systems are much less understood. In order to distinguish between zero entropy systems, Huang and Ye [Adv. Math., 2009] introduced the concept of maximal pattern entropy of a topological dynamical system. At the heart of their analysis is a Sauer-Shelah type lemma. In the present paper, we provide a shorter and more conceptual proof of a strengthening of this lemma, and discuss its surprising connection between dynamical system, combinatorics and a recent breakthrough in communication complexity. We also improve one of the main results of Huang and Ye on the maximal pattern entropy of zero-dimensional systems, by proving a new Sauer-Shelah type lemma, which unifies and enhances various extremal results on VC-dimension, Natarajan dimension and Steele dimension.

On state complexity for subword-closed languages

Abstract:This paper investigates the state complexities of subword-closed and superword-closed languages, comparing them to regular languages. We focus on the square root operator and the substitution operator. We establish an exponential lower bound for superword-closed languages for the k-th root. For subword-closed languages we analyze in detail a specific instance of the square root problem for which a quadratic complexity is proven. For the substitution operator, we show an exponential lower bound for the general substitution. We then find some conditions for which we prove a quadratic upper bound.

Abstract:It is always difficult to precisely predict and control the information spreading in online social networks.This paper summarized the recent research progress of this problem from the perspective of complex network theory.In particular,the followings were emphasized:empirical analysis on online social networks,information spreading dynamics,and link prediction algorithms.The respective problems were systematically studied and compared,and advantages and disadvantages of each,as well as their applicable areas.Finally,several typical evaluation metrics are summarized.This survey could shed some lights in understanding the theory of information spreading on social networks,providing scientific evidences to its various applications.

Abstract:The linear space hypothesis is a practical working hypothesis, which originally states the insolvability of a restricted 2CNF Boolean formula satisfiability problem parameterized by the number of Boolean variables. From this hypothesis, it naturally follows that the degree-3 directed graph connectivity problem (3DSTCON) parameterized by the number of vertices in a given graph cannot belong to PsubLIN, composed of all parameterized decision problems computable by polynomial-time, sub-linear-space deterministic Turing machines. This hypothesis immediately implies L$\neq$NL and it was used as a solid foundation to obtain new lower bounds on the computational complexity of various NL search and NL optimization problems. The state complexity of transformation refers to the cost of converting one type of finite automata to another type, where the cost is measured in terms of the increase of the number of inner states of the converted automata from that of the original automata. We relate the linear space hypothesis to the state complexity of transforming restricted 2-way nondeterministic finite automata to computationally equivalent 2-way alternating finite automata having narrow computation graphs. For this purpose, we present state complexity characterizations of 3DSTCON and PsubLIN. We further characterize a nonuniform version of the linear space hypothesis in terms of the state complexity of transformation.

Abstract:If a concept is not well defined, there are grounds for its abuse. This is particularly true of complexity, an inherently interdisciplinary concept that has penetrated very different fields of intellectual activity from physics to linguistics, but with no underlying, unified theory. Complexity has become a popular buzzword used in the hope of gaining attention or funding -- institutes and research networks associated with complex systems grow like mushrooms. Why and how did it happen that this vague notion has become a central motif in modern science? Is it only a fashion, a kind of sociological phenomenon, or is it a sign of a changing paradigm of our perception of the laws of nature and of the approaches required to understand them? Because virtually every real system is inherently extremely complicated, to say that a system is complex is almost an empty statement - couldn't an Institute of Complex Systems just as well be called an Institute for Almost Everything? Despite these valid concerns, the world is indeed made of many highly interconnected parts over many scales, whose interactions result in a complex behaviour needing separate interpretation for each level. This realization forces us to appreciate that new features emerge as one goes from one scale to another, so it follows that the science of complexity is about revealing the principles governing the ways by which these new properties appear.

Abstract:One of the main challenges for decision scientists in the 21st century will be managing systems of ever increasing complexity. As systems like electrical power grids, computer networks, and the software that controls it all grow increasingly complex, fragility, bugs, and security flaws are becoming increasingly prevalent and problematic. It is natural then to ask what consequences this growing complexity has on our ability to manage these systems. In this paper, we take a first step toward addressing this question with the development of the Fundamental matrix, a framework for analyzing the broad qualitative nature of decision making. With the Fundamental matrix we explain in a qualitative way many theorems and known results about optimization, complexity, and security. The simplicity of the explanations leads to new insights toward potential research directions. Like other "theories" dealing with broad fundamental properties, however, the Fundamental matrix has certain limitations that make it largely descriptive. Thus, instead of claiming the last words our goal is to stimulate a dialog and debate that may one day lead to a prescriptive science of complexity.

Abstract:There is no single universally accepted definition of "Complexity". There are several perspectives on complexity and what constitutes complex behaviour or complex systems, as opposed to regular, predictable behaviour and simple systems. In this paper, we explore the following perspectives on complexity: "effort-to-describe" (Shannon entropy $H$, Lempel-Ziv complexity $LZ$), "effort-to-compress" ($ETC$ complexity) and "degree-of-order" (Subsymmetry or $SubSym$). While Shannon entropy and $LZ$ are very popular and widely used, $ETC$ is a recently proposed measure for time series. In this paper, we also propose a novel normalized measure $SubSym$ based on the existing idea of counting the number of subsymmetries or palindromes within a sequence. We compare the performance of these complexity measures on the following tasks: a) characterizing complexity of short binary sequences of lengths 4 to 16, b) distinguishing periodic and chaotic time series from 1D logistic map and 2D Hénon map, and c) distinguishing between tonic and irregular spiking patterns generated from the "Adaptive exponential integrate-and-fire" neuron model. Our study reveals that each perspective has its own advantages and uniqueness while also having an overlap with each other.

Complexity of some algorithmic problems in groups: a survey

Abstract:In this survey, we address the worst-case, average-case, and generic-case time complexity of the word problem and some other algorithmic problems in several classes of groups and show that it is often the case that the average-case complexity of the word problem is linear with respect to the length of an input word, which is as good as it gets if one considers groups given by generators and defining relations. At the same time, there are other natural algorithmic problems, for instance, the geodesic (decision) problem or Whitehead's automorphism problem, where the average-case time complexity can be sublinear, even constant.

Abstract:We survey the complexity class $\exists \mathbb{R}$, which captures the complexity of deciding the existential theory of the reals. The class $\exists \mathbb{R}$ has roots in two different traditions, one based on the Blum-Shub-Smale model of real computation, and the other following work by Mnëv and Shor on the universality of realization spaces of oriented matroids. Over the years the number of problems for which $\exists \mathbb{R}$ rather than NP has turned out to be the proper way of measuring their complexity has grown, particularly in the fields of computational geometry, graph drawing, game theory, and some areas in logic and algebra. $\exists \mathbb{R}$ has also started appearing in the context of machine learning, Markov decision processes, and probabilistic reasoning. We have aimed at collecting a comprehensive compendium of problems complete and hard for $\exists \mathbb{R}$, as well as a long list of open problems. The compendium is presented in the third part of our survey; a tour through the compendium and the areas it touches on makes up the second part. The first part introduces the reader to the existential theory of the reals as a complexity class, discussing its history, motivation and prospects as well as some technical aspects.

Abstract:In this paper, we class and compare all kinds of complexities, and discuss the evolvement, characteristic, diversity and substance of complexity research at home and abroad. Complexity concepts can be based on the arithmetic complexity, and the complexity concepts can generally be distinguished as three kinds: the computation, the multiplicity, and the metaphor. There are inherent relations in them, computational complexities are a measurement of complexity about a set of strands in one dimension, complexities of structural diversity are a measurement of complexity between administrative levels, and metaphor complexities in their outside are a measurement of complexity that interactional relations between systems and its histories, its evolvements, its circumstance in greater context.
