Abstract:The paper proposes a new positioning algorithm of wireless sensor network nodes. The main idea and the implementing approaches of the algorithm are introduced. The algorithm doesn't require any excess hardware. Simulations show that average positioning error is less than 20% of nodes' radio range.

Abstract:In order to increase the localization coverage while keeping the localization error small in a unique network architecture in which there are not evenly distributed anchor nodes with great ability of communication or additional infrastructure, a Top-down Positioning Scheme (TPS) for underwater acoustic sensor networks is proposed. By defining node's confidence reasonably, TPS insures the quality of the new reference nodes. TPS also refines the nodes which have just been positioned via the gradient method and helps non-localized nodes search for more reference nodes via the new scheme for 3D Euclidean distance estimation. By comparing the new scheme for 3D Euclidean distance estimation with the existing scheme, the new scheme is shown to have greater ability to estimate two-hop Euclidean distance in 3D space. Simulation results show that TPS which integrates node's confidence defined reasonably, the gradient method, and the new scheme for 3D Euclidean distance estimation can increase the localization coverage ratio, while keeping the localization error small.
Improving Methods for Wileless Node Locating Calculation.

Abstract:The paper focuses on improving node localization accuracy for wireless sensor networks. This article describes distance-based node localization algorithm and analyzes limitations of basic algorithm. Reference anchor node and their choice principle are put forward. Improving methods to advance localization accuracy are proposed. The paper tries to locate the node position with weighted least square estimation and robust least square estimation to make wireless node localization more accurate. Appropriate criterion function is selected to withstand coarse errors. The results of the simulation prove the effectiveness of these methods.

Abstract:Node localization is of significant importance for supporting many critical applications in wireless sensor networks. However, traditional Amorphous localization algorithm and its variants still cannot provide sufficient localization accuracy. To address this issue, this paper proposes an improved Amorphous localization algorithm to determine the locations of unknown nodes. To determine the locations of unknown nodes under this algorithm, we need to select these beacon nodes, which are less than a presetting hop count threshold away from unknown nodes. We then adopt two-dimensional hyperbolic function instead of the classic least square method to determine the locations of unknown nodes, which are very close to their actual locations. Simulations are conducted to validate the accuracy of our proposed localization algorithm in wireless sensor networks. Remarkably, the average localization error of our proposed localization algorithm is lower than those of Amorphous algorithm and its improved algorithm, under both the uniform and non-uniform node distributions.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks are distributed networks in the way to form wireless self-organization, using a large number of sensor nodes densely deployed in a specific area to monitor external data collection. Positioning accuracy of node becomes the determinants of the data reliability. In this paper, the node of wireless sensor network is located using the algorithm of distribution estimation to enhance the stability of measuring nodes, better improve the efficiency of node localization and reduce the positioning error and make the location having the conditions of parallel computing. Measurement errors can be completely filtered to get the physical location of node, no additional communication spending, and optimize network system.

Abstract:The challenge of wireless sensor network (WSN) becomes truly pervasive is that of reliable positioning problem. The positioning accuracy of the traditional DV-HOP (Distance Vector-HOP) algorithm has very strong dependence for density of anchor node, only when anchor node density reaches a certain extent, will it has better positioning effect. Therefore, it increases the cost of network service. In this paper, we propose novel positioning service computing method for WSN. The method can estimate distance of nodes which has same neighbor nodes by maximum likelihood estimation. It effectively improves the accuracy of measuring distance among nodes. The nodes can obtain itself average hop distance by the distance from itself to its circular nodes and the number of jump. It’s a good solution to solve the dependence of traditional DV-HOP algorithm on anchor node density. In the positioning service stage, based on intersection density among circles with anchor node as center and estimation distance as radius, the method can replace triangle positioning algorithm by the method of estimating the node coordinates to be measured. The belief degree of reliable positioning service can be computed by our proposed fusion method. Our experiments show that our presented method can solve the problem of estimated error of distance caused by loop and it can greatly improve the efficiency of positioning service.

Abstract:The increasing maturity of wireless communication technology and computer software has dramatically reduced the cost of embedded devices with functions such as sensing targets, processing data, and communications and expanded the application scenarios and scale, which has promoted the rapid development of WSN. Moreover, the acquisition of location information of unknown nodes is one of the critical issues that can be studied in wireless sensor networks. Therefore, aiming to solve large-ranging errors caused by uncertain factors in the ranging stage, this paper proposes a sensor network positioning method based on edge coverage control. It can dynamically correct model parameters to improve the performance of the DV-Hop method, integrate RSSI technology and error correction into the corresponding stage of DV-Hop, and make full use of the advantages of RSSI technology in short-distance applications. With the help of the known location information in WSN, the ranging error is reduced while avoiding information redundancy. The performance of DV-Hop can be improved to finally solve the positioning problem when the node deployment is relatively sparse. Simulation verification data show that the improved method can effectively reduce the distance estimation error in the same situation and achieve higher positioning accuracy.

Abstract:WSN(Wireless Sensor Network) is a novel technology about acquiring and processing information. The problems of determining the node locations in wireless sensor networks are studied . A new positioning algorithms of wireless sensor network node is brought forward in this paper, which needs some fake nodes whose location information are given aforehand. The confirmation of positioning node is realized by clock-positioning algorithms. Simulation test shows that the algorithms is feasible and can be used for wireless sensors network application.

Abstract:This paper proposes a low-cost distributed location algorithm for large-scale wireless sensor networks-the anchor-free location algorithm which only needs to elect some reference nodes and make use of wireless transceivers carried by nodes to complete the location process. The algorithm proposed in this paper first elects five reference nodes according to certain criteria from the homogenous sensors in the network, and the five nodes are chosen as "anchors" to form a coordinate system. Other unknown nodes obtain their distances from the reference nodes by the hop gradient algorithm, which is triggered by the sink node and executed by the reference nodes one by one. The process of electing the reference nodes and the process of obtaining the distances from the reference nodes are completed simultaneously. Then the coordinate of each node is calculated by itself using Newton's iteration method. The starting value of iteration is given in this paper to further reduce the computation. This paper also gives the localization effect of the algorithm and analyzes the location error caused by node density as well.

Abstract:Anchor free location algorithm realizes locating the nodes in the wireless sensor networks only by the wireless transceiver equipped on each node, needs not add any other equipment or hardware. Moreover, anchor free location algorithm, which needs no anchor or only needs to elect some reference nodes during the location process, is very applicable to large scale wireless sensor networks consists of many low-cost nodes. Abstract:Two factors, accuracy and cost, have always plagued the node positing in wireless sensor networks (WSN). If positioning is required to be accurate enough, the cost of equipment required for the location must increase significantly. Conversely, the lower cost will bring some problems like the big bias of positioning. DV-hop is a widely used positioning algorithm due to its low dependence on the device and the low operating cost. Many modified DV-hop algorithms improve the estimation accuracy of the average jump distance and the distance between the unknown and known nodes by adding weights, applying least squares, and using heuristic algorithms. In this paper, a novel algorithm based on the modes communication for the parallel cat swarm optimization is proposed so as to improve the location accuracy of DV-hop.
High-precision Localisation Algorithm in Wireless Sensor Networks.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the nodes localisation approaches in wireless sensor networks by adding two new variables, proportionality coefficient and deviation. This idea is different from the generally used least square nodes localisation methods which only consider coordinates of nodes. It is shown that if the measurement error between a blind node and each of its adjacency nodes is a linear combination of a fixed proportion and fixed deviation. The real position of blind nodes can be determined by filtering the errors. Even though the proportionality coefficient and deviation are uncertain, if the changes generated by random disturbances are small enough, the localisation errors can be reduced greatly by using the proposed method. The computational time is shorter than existing ones since only the time of solving linear equations is needed. If the errors need to reduce by iterations, a stable result can be obtained after ten iterations. It can be seen that only the measurement errors and the stability of the measurement are required but the communications cost is not required. Moreover, the proposed method possesses the conditions of parallel algorithm, i.e., it is available for multi-nodes.
A Decentralized Positioning Method For Wireless Sensor Networks Based On Weighted Interpolation

Abstract:A decentralized sensor positioning algorithm is proposed using an adaptive weighted-interpolation method. The proposed method utilizes in-network processing among sensors to compute the location of the target, which is in contrast to most existing algorithms that rely on the joint processing of raw measurements from all sensors at a central server. Specifically, the target location is computed by taking the weighted average of the local estimates based on the sensors' reliability. The average is attained iteratively with each iteration being performed by a different sensor in the network. During each iteration, a sensor computes a new estimate of the target's location based on its own observation and the most recent update passed over by the sensor responsible for the previous iteration. The newest location estimate and the update process is circulated among the sensors in the close-vicinity of the target, similar to that of a token-ring topology. A message-passing protocol is proposed for the inter-sensor communication and is used to adaptively select the participating sensors as the target moves around the area. Energy and bandwidth efficiency is achieved since the system need not expend large amounts of resources in transmitting the raw data to the central server. Simulation results demonstrate the fast convergence of the iterative method and the effectiveness of the proposed positioning scheme compared to other methods.
Connectivity and RSSI based localization scheme for wireless sensor networks

Abstract:A multitude of applications of wireless sensor networks require that the sensor nodes be location-aware. Range-based localization schemes are sometimes not feasible due to hardware cost and resource restriction of the sensor nodes. As cost-efficient solutions, range-free localization schemes are more attractive for large-scale networks. This paper presents Weighted Centriod (W-Centriod), a novel range-free localization scheme extended on the basis of Centroid scheme, which takes received signal strength indicator (RSSI) metric into account besides connectivity metric used in Centroid scheme. It's shown that our W-Centriod method outperforms Centriod scheme significantly in terms of both the average localization error and the uniformity of error distribution across different positions, which decrease by 49.3% and by 37.7%, respectively, under the best circumstance. Moreover, a two-phase localization approach consisting of a field data collection phase and an off-line parameter optimization phase is proposed for localization in wireless sensor networks.

Abstract:To address the problem of low localization accuracy in the node localization algorithms of wireless sensor networks (WSN) based on received signal strength indication (RSSI) ranging, a WSN node localization algorithm based on ranging optimization and graph optimization is proposed. In terms of RSSI ranging, the outliers are removed using the Grubbs method, and the data are processed using a moving average smoothing-Gaussian hybrid filter to establish a Bessel function ranging model to reduce the ranging error; in terms of node localization, the signal strength data are employed to construct a distance cost term, a cost function model is built based on these cost terms, and graph optimization is adopted to minimize this function. Then, the node position is estimated to minimize the overall observation error. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm has higher ranging and localization accuracy than existing ranging and localization algorithms, and it can meet the requirements of node localization in large-scale WSN.

Abstract:Location information is an essential requirement in wireless sensor networks (WSN), many wireless sensor applications would be limited without location information. Distance vector-hop (DV-Hop), as a typical path-dependence algorithm, utilizes the connectivity and multi-hop transmission for estimated positioning. However, a large positioning error is caused because of its simple and rough estimated method. In this work, we analyze the defects of the existing traditional single-objective and multi-objective model based on DV-Hop algorithm, and provide a multi-objective localization model based on the real average estimated distance of all beacon nodes. Then, we solve it using the multi-objective optimization algorithm (NSGA-II), and named it RAMGA-DV-Hop. Eventually, we tested it with different aspects, and the simulation results confirm our method significantly outperforms the DV-Hop and OCS-LC-DV-Hop. Moreover, compare with existing multi-objective localization algorithms, such as NSGAII-DV-Hop, its overall performance also has advantages.
An Artificial Plant Community Algorithm for the Accurate Range-Free Positioning of Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:The problem of positioning wireless sensor networks is an important and challenging topic in all walks of life. Inspired by the evolution behavior of natural plant communities and traditional positioning algorithms, a novel positioning algorithm based on the behavior of artificial plant communities is designed and presented here. First, a mathematical model of the artificial plant community is established. Artificial plant communities survive in habitable places rich in water and nutrients, offering the best feasible solution to the problem of positioning a wireless sensor network; otherwise, they leave the non-habitable area, abandoning the feasible solution with poor fitness. Second, an artificial plant community algorithm is presented to solve the positioning problems encountered in a wireless sensor network. The artificial plant community algorithm includes three basic operations, namely seeding, growing, and fruiting. Unlike traditional artificial intelligence algorithms, which always have a fixed population size and only one fitness comparison per iteration, the artificial plant community algorithm has a variable population size and three fitness comparisons per iteration. After seeding by an original population size, the population size decreases during growth, as only the individuals with high fitness can survive, while the individuals with low fitness die. In fruiting, the population size recovers, and the individuals with higher fitness can learn from each other and produce more fruits. The optimal solution in each iterative computing process can be preserved as a parthenogenesis fruit for the next seeding operation. When seeding again, the fruits with high fitness can survive and be seeded, while the fruits with low fitness die, and a small number of new seeds are generated through random seeding. Through the continuous cycle of these three basic operations, the artificial plant community can use a fitness function to obtain accurate solutions to positioning problems in limited time. Third, experiments are conducted using different random networks, and the results verify that the proposed positioning algorithms can obtain good positioning accuracy with a small amount of computation, which is suitable for wireless sensor nodes with limited computing resources. Finally, the full text is summarized, and the technical deficiencies and future research directions are presented.

Abstract:The localization of sensor nodes is a fundamental problem in sensor networks and can be implemented using powerful and expensive beacons. Beacons, the fewer the better, can acquire their position knowledge either from GPS devices or by virtue of being manually placed. In this paper, we propose a distributed method to localization of sensor nodes using a single moving beacon, where sensor nodes compute their position estimate based on the range-free technique. Two parameters are critical to the location accuracy of sensor nodes: the radio transmission range of the beacon and how often the beacon broadcasts its position. Theoretical analysis shows that these two parameters determine the upper bound of the estimation error when the traverse route of the beacon is a straight line. We extend the position estimate when the traverse route of the beacon is randomly chosen in a real-world situation, where the radio irregularity might cause a node to miss some crucial coordinate information from the beacon. We further point out that the movement pattern of the beacon plays a pivotal role in the localization task for sensors. To minimize estimation errors, sensor nodes can carry out a variety of algorithms in accordance with the movement of the beacon. Simulation results compare variants of the distributed method in a variety of testing environments. Real experiments show that the proposed method is feasible and can estimate the location of sensor nodes accurately, given a single moving beacon.
A walking beacon-assisted localization in wieless sensor networks

Abstract:The localization of the sensor node is a fundamental problem in sensor networks and can be implemented using powerful and expensive beacons. In this paper, we propose two distributed methods to localization of sensor nodes using a single moving beacon where sensor nodes compute their position estimate based on the range-free technique. The first method uses the arrival and departure information of a walking beacon and the second method exploits the variance of the Received Signal Strength (RSS) from the beacon. We provide the upper bound of the estimation error for these methods in an ideal environment. Critical to the location accuracy of sensor nodes are two more parameters, the radio transmission range of the beacon, and how often the beacon broadcasts its position. Simulation results show the location estimate error of sensor nodes applying the proposed two methods. The results are consistent to the theoretical analysis and the average estimate errors could be within one meter. ©2007 IEEE.
A new localization method for wireless sensor network nodes based on N-best rank sequence

Abstract:Rank sequence-based localization method is a novel and high-accuracy wireless sensor networks (WSN) localization technique. The localization space is divided into distinct sub-regions and each is uniquely identified by a rank sequence. However, the localization errors for nodes on the edge of a region are rather large and they are not optimal in view of average localization errors. This paper proposes a new N-best rank sequence localization method. The best value N is first achieved using the random sampling for reference nodes based on a wireless channel fading model, and the coordinates for the target are then computed through selecting the top N rank sequences. We have conducted the simulation with 100 nodes, the outdoor experiment with 15 ZigBee physical nodes, and the air-raid shelter tunnel test with 10 ZigBee nodes. All the results have shown that our method reduces the average localization errors and improves the localization accuracy for nodes on the edge of the region. Copyright © 2010 Acta Automatica Sinica.
