Abstract:We introduce a general notion of miniaturization of a problem that comprises the different miniaturizations of concrete problems considered so far. We develop parts of the basic theory of miniaturizations in this general framework. Using the appropriate logical formalism, we show that the miniaturization of a definable problem in W[t] lies in W[t], too. In particular, the miniaturization of the dominating set problem is in W[2].

Abstract:Parameterized complexity is a multivariate theory for the analysis of computational problems. It leads to practically efficient algorithms for many NP-hard problems and also provides a much finer complexity classification for other intractable problems. Although the theory is mostly on decision problems, parameterized complexity naturally extends to counting problems as well. The purpose of this article is to survey a few aspects of parameterized counting complexity, with a particular emphasis on some general frameworks in which parameterized complexity proves to be indispensable.

Abstract:Many parameterized problems (as the clique problem or the dominating set problem) ask, given an instance and a natural number k as parameter, whether there is a solution of size k. We analyze the relationship between the complexity of such a problem and the corresponding maximality (minimality) problem asking for a solution of size k maximal (minimal) with respect to set inclusion. As our results show maximality problems may increase the parameterized complexity, while “in terms of the W-hierarchy” minimality problems do not increase the complexity.

Abstract:Powerful results from the theory of integer programming have recently led to substantial advances in parameterized complexity. However, our perception is that, except for Lenstra's algorithm for solving integer linear programming in fixed dimension, there is still little understanding in the parameterized complexity community of the strengths and limitations of the available tools. This is understandable: it is often difficult to infer exact runtimes or even the distinction between FPT and XP algorithms, and some knowledge is simply unwritten folklore in a different community. We wish to make a step in remedying this situation. To that end, we first provide an easy to navigate quick reference guide of integer programming algorithms from the perspective of parameterized complexity. Then, we show their applications in three case studies, obtaining FPT algorithms with runtime $f(k)poly(n)$. We focus on: * Modeling: since the algorithmic results follow by applying existing algorithms to new models, we shift the focus from the complexity result to the modeling result, highlighting common patterns and tricks which are used. * Optimality program: after giving an FPT algorithm, we are interested in reducing the dependence on the parameter; we show which algorithms and tricks are often useful for speed-ups. * Minding the poly(n): reducing $f(k)$ often has the unintended consequence of increasing poly(n); so we highlight the common trade-offs and show how to get the best of both worlds. Specifically, we consider graphs of bounded neighborhood diversity which are in a sense the simplest of dense graphs, and we show several FPT algorithms for Capacitated Dominating Set, Sum Coloring, and Max-q-Cut by modeling them as convex programs in fixed dimension, n-fold integer programs, bounded dual treewidth programs, and indefinite quadratic programs in fixed dimension.

Abstract:We argue that parameterized complexity is a useful tool with which to study global constraints. In particular, we show that many global constraints which are intractable to propagate completely have natural parameters which make them fixed-parameter tractable and which are easy to compute. This tractability tends either to be the result of a simple dynamic program or of a decomposition which has a strong backdoor of bounded size. This strong backdoor is often a cycle cutset. We also show that parameterized complexity can be used to study other aspects of constraint programming like symmetry breaking. For instance, we prove that value symmetry is fixed-parameter tractable to break in the number of symmetries. Finally, we argue that parameterized complexity can be used to derive results about the approximability of constraint propagation.

The Constant Inapproximability of the Parameterized Dominating Set Problem

Abstract:A set $D$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a dominating set if every vertex of $G$ is contained in $D$ or adjacent to some vertex of $D$. The number of vertices in a smallest dominating set of $G$ is denoted by $\gamma(G)$. We prove that, under the assumption ${FPT}\ne {W}[1]$ from parameterized complexity, for any constant $c\in \mathbb{N}^+$ and computable function $f: \mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{N}$ there is no algorithm which on every input graph $G$ finds a dominating set of size at most $c\cdot \gamma(G)$ in $f(\gamma(G))\cdot |G|^{O(1)}$ time. In other words, any constant approximation of the parameterized dominating set problem is ${W}[1]$-hard. Furthermore, assuming the exponential time hypothesis (ETH) [R. Impagliazzo and R. Paturi, J. Comput. System Sci., 62 (2001), pp. 367--375], we can even rule out the existence of a $f(\gamma(G))\cdot |G|^{{({log}\;\gamma(G))}^{{\varepsilon}/{12}}}$-time algorithm which on every input graph $G$ outputs a dominating set of size at most $\sqrt[3+\varepsilon]{{log}\; (\gamma(G))} \cdot \gamma(G)$ for every $0<\varepsilon<1$. Our hardness reduction is built on the second author's recent ${W}[1]$-hardness proof of the biclique problem [B. Lin, The parameterized complexity of $k$-Biclique, in Proceedings of the 26th Annual ACM--SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms, SODA 2015 (San Diego, CA), ACM, New York, SIAM, Philadelphia, 2015, pp. 605--615]. This yields, among other things, a proof without the probabilistically checkable proof (PCP) machinery that the classic dominating set problem has no polynomial time constant approximation under ETH.

Abstract:In parameterized complexity there are three natural definitions of fixed-parameter tractability called strongly uniform, weakly uniform and nonuniform fpt. Similarly, there are three notions of subexponential time, yielding three flavours of the exponential time hypothesis (ETH) stating that 3Sat is not solvable in subexponential time. It is known that ETH implies that p-Clique is not fixed-parameter tractable if both are taken to be strongly uniform or both are taken to be uniform, and we extend this to the nonuniform case. We also show that even the containment of weakly uniform subexponential time in nonuniform subexponential time is strict. Furthermore, we deduce from nonuniform ETH that no single exponent d allows for arbitrarily good fpt-approximations of clique.

Abstract:This paper studies the computational complexity of a robust variant of a two-stage submodular minimization problem that we call Robust Submodular Minimizer. In this problem, we are given $k$ submodular functions~$f_1,\dots,f_k$ over a set family~$2^V$, which represent $k$ possible scenarios in the future when we will need to find an optimal solution for one of these scenarios, i.e., a minimizer for one of the functions. The present task is to find a set $X \subseteq V$ that is close to \emph{some} optimal solution for each $f_i$ in the sense that some minimizer of~$f_i$ can be obtained from $X$ by adding/removing at most $d$ elements for a given integer $d \in \mathbb{N}$. The main contribution of this paper is to provide a complete computational map of this problem with respect to parameters~$k$ and~$d$, which reveals a tight complexity threshold for both parameters: (1) Robust Submodular Minimizer can be solved in polynomial time when $k \leq 2$, but is NP-hard if $k$ is a constant with $k \geq 3$.(2)Robust Submodular Minimizer can be solved in polynomial time when $d=0$, but is NP-hard if $d$ is a constant with $d \geq 1$. (3) Robust Submodular Minimizer is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by~$(k,d)$. We also show that if some submodular function $f_i$ has a polynomial number of minimizers, then the problem becomes fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by $d$. On the other hand, the problem remains $\mathsf{W}[1]$-hard parameterized by $k$ even if each function $f_i$ has at most~$|V|$ minimizers. We remark that all our hardness results hold even if each submodular function is given by a cut function of a directed graph.

On the Parameterized Complexity of the Perfect Phylogeny Problem

Abstract:This paper categorizes the parameterized complexity of the algorithmic problems Perfect Phylogeny and Triangulating Colored Graphs when parameterized by the number of genes and colors, respectively. We show that they are complete for the parameterized complexity class XALP using a reduction from Tree-chained Multicolor Independent Set and a proof of membership. We introduce the problem Triangulating Multicolored Graphs as a stepping stone and prove XALP-completeness for this problem as well. We also show that, assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis, there exists no algorithm that solves any of these problems in time $f(k) n^{o(k)}$, where $n$ is the input size, $k$ the parameter, and $f$ any computable function.

Abstract:In the Maximum Common Induced Subgraph problem (henceforth MCIS), given two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, one looks for a graph with the maximum number of vertices being both an induced subgraph of $G_1$ and $G_2$. MCIS is among the most studied classical NP-hard problems. It remains NP-hard on many graph classes including forests. In this paper, we study the parameterized complexity of MCIS. As a generalization of \textsc{Clique}, it is W[1]-hard parameterized by the size of the solution. Being NP-hard even on forests, most structural parameterizations are intractable. One has to go as far as parameterizing by the size of the minimum vertex cover to get some tractability. Indeed, when parameterized by $k := \text{vc}(G_1)+\text{vc}(G_2)$ the sum of the vertex cover number of the two input graphs, the problem was shown to be fixed-parameter tractable, with an algorithm running in time $2^{O(k \log k)}$. We complement this result by showing that, unless the ETH fails, it cannot be solved in time $2^{o(k \log k)}$. This kind of tight lower bound has been shown for a few problems and parameters but, to the best of our knowledge, not for the vertex cover number. We also show that MCIS does not have a polynomial kernel when parameterized by $k$, unless $NP \subseteq \mathsf{coNP}/poly$. Finally, we study MCIS and its connected variant MCCIS on some special graph classes and with respect to other structural parameters.

Abstract:We give machine characterizations of most parameterized complexity classes, in particular, of W[P], of the classes of the W-hierarchy, and of the A-hierarchy. For example, we characterize W[P] as the class of all parameterized problems decidable by a nondeterministic fixed-parameter tractable algorithm whose number of nondeterministic steps is bounded in terms of the parameter. The machine characterizations suggest the introduction of a hierarchy Wfunc between the W- and the A-hierarchy. We study the basic properties of this hierarchy.

Abstract:A Fixed-Parameter Tractable (\FPT) $\rho$-approximation algorithm for a minimization (resp. maximization) parameterized problem $P$ is an FPT algorithm that, given an instance $(x, k)\in P$ computes a solution of cost at most $k \cdot \rho(k)$ (resp. $k/\rho(k)$) if a solution of cost at most (resp. at least) $k$ exists; otherwise the output can be arbitrary. For well-known intractable problems such as the W[1]-hard {Clique} and W[2]-hard {Set Cover} problems, the natural question is whether we can get any \FPT-approximation. It is widely believed that both {Clique} and {Set-Cover} admit no FPT $\rho$-approximation algorithm, for any increasing function $\rho$. Assuming standard conjectures such as the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) \cite{eth-paturi} and the Projection Games Conjecture (PGC) \cite{r3}, we make the first progress towards proving this conjecture by showing that 1. Under the ETH and PGC, there exist constants $F_1, F_2 >0$ such that the {Set Cover} problem does not admit an FPT approximation algorithm with ratio $k^{F_1}$ in $2^{k^{F_2}}\cdot \text{poly}(N,M)$ time, where $N$ is the size of the universe and $M$ is the number of sets. 2. Unless $\NP\subseteq \SUBEXP$, for every $1> \delta > 0$ there exists a constant $F(\delta)>0$ such that {Clique} has no FPT cost approximation with ratio $k^{1-\delta}$ in $2^{k^{F}}\cdot \text{poly}(n)$ time, where $n$ is the number of vertices in the graph. In the second part of the paper we consider various W[1]-hard problems such as {\dst}, {\dsf}, Directed Steiner Network and {\mec}. For all these problem we give polynomial time $f(\text{OPT})$-approximation algorithms for some small function $f$ (the largest approximation ratio we give is $\text{OPT}^2$).

Abstract:The minimum unsatisfiability version of a constraint satisfaction problem (MinCSP) asks for an assignment where the number of unsatisfied constraints is minimum possible, or equivalently, asks for a minimum-size set of constraints whose deletion makes the instance satisfiable. For a finite set $\Gamma$ of constraints, we denote by MinCSP($\Gamma$) the restriction of the problem where each constraint is from $\Gamma$. The polynomial-time solvability and the polynomial-time approximability of MinCSP($\Gamma$) were fully characterized by Khanna et al. [Siam J. Comput. '00]. Here we study the fixed-parameter (FP-) approximability of the problem: given an instance and an integer $k$, one has to find a solution of size at most $g(k)$ in time $f(k)n^{O(1)}$ if a solution of size at most $k$ exists. We especially focus on the case of constant-factor FP-approximability. We show the following dichotomy: for each finite constraint language $\Gamma$, either we exhibit a constant-factor FP-approximation for MinCSP($\Gamma$); or we prove that MinCSP($\Gamma$) has no constant-factor FP-approximation unless FPT$=$W[1]. In particular, we show that approximating the so-called Nearest Codeword within some constant factor is W[1]-hard. Recently, Arnab et al. [ICALP '18] showed that such a W[1]-hardness of approximation implies that Even Set is W[1]-hard under randomized reductions. Combining our results, we therefore settle the parameterized complexity of Even Set, a famous open question in the field.

Abstract:The Parameterized Inapproximability Hypothesis (PIH) asserts that no fixed parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm can distinguish a satisfiable CSP instance, parameterized by the number of variables, from one where every assignment fails to satisfy an ε fraction of constraints for some absolute constant ε > 0. PIH plays the role of the PCP theorem in parameterized complexity. However, PIH has only been established under Gap-ETH, a very strong assumption with an inherent gap. In this work, we prove PIH under the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH). This is the first proof of PIH from a gap-free assumption. Our proof is self-contained and elementary. We identify an ETH-hard CSP whose variables take vector values, and constraints are either linear or of a special parallel structure. Both kinds of constraints can be checked with constant soundness via a "parallel PCP of proximity" based on the Walsh-Hadamard code.
Parameterized Algorithms on Integer Sets with Small Doubling: Integer Programming, Subset Sum and k-SUM

Abstract:We study the parameterized complexity of algorithmic problems whose input is an integer set $A$ in terms of the doubling constant $C := |A + A|/|A|$, a fundamental measure of additive structure. We present evidence that this new parameterization is algorithmically useful in the form of new results for two difficult, well-studied problems: Integer Programming and Subset Sum. First, we show that determining the feasibility of bounded Integer Programs is a tractable problem when parameterized in the doubling constant. Specifically, we prove that the feasibility of an integer program $I$ with $n$ polynomially-bounded variables and $m$ constraints can be determined in time $n^{O_C(1)} poly(|I|)$ when the column set of the constraint matrix has doubling constant $C$. Second, we show that the Subset Sum and Unbounded Subset Sum problems can be solved in time $n^{O_C(1)}$ and $n^{O_C(\log \log \log n)}$, respectively, where the $O_C$ notation hides functions that depend only on the doubling constant $C$. We also show the equivalence of achieving an FPT algorithm for Subset Sum with bounded doubling and achieving a milestone result for the parameterized complexity of Box ILP. Finally, we design near-linear time algorithms for $k$-SUM as well as tight lower bounds for 4-SUM and nearly tight lower bounds for $k$-SUM, under the $k$-SUM conjecture. Several of our results rely on a new proof that Freiman's Theorem, a central result in additive combinatorics, can be made efficiently constructive. This result may be of independent interest.

Abstract:The parameterized complexity of problems is often studied with respect to the size of their optimal solutions. However, for a maximization problem, the size of the optimal solution can be very large, rendering algorithms parameterized by it inefficient. Therefore, we suggest to study the parameterized complexity of maximization problems with respect to the size of the optimal solutions to their minimization versions. We examine this suggestion by considering the Maximal Minimal Vertex Cover (MMVC) problem, whose minimization version, Vertex Cover, is one of the most studied problems in the field of Parameterized Complexity. Our main contribution is a parameterized approximation algorithm for MMVC, including its weighted variant. We also give conditional lower bounds for the running times of algorithms for MMVC and its weighted variant.
The PCP-like Theorem for Sub-linear Time Inapproximability

Abstract:In this paper we propose the PCP-like theorem for sub-linear time inapproximability. Abboud et al. have devised the distributed PCP framework for proving sub-quadratic time inapproximability. Here we try to go further in this direction. Staring from SETH, we first find a problem denoted as Ext-$k$-SAT, which can not be computed in linear time, then devise an efficient MA-like protocol for this problem. To use this protocol to prove the sub-linear time inapproximability of other problems, we devise a new kind of reduction denoted as Ext-reduction, and it is different from existing reduction techniques. We also define two new hardness class, the problems in which can be computed in linear-time, but can not be efficiently approximated in sub-linear time. Some problems are shown to be in the newly defined hardness class.

Abstract:The linear space hypothesis is a practical working hypothesis, which originally states the insolvability of a restricted 2CNF Boolean formula satisfiability problem parameterized by the number of Boolean variables. From this hypothesis, it naturally follows that the degree-3 directed graph connectivity problem (3DSTCON) parameterized by the number of vertices in a given graph cannot belong to PsubLIN, composed of all parameterized decision problems computable by polynomial-time, sub-linear-space deterministic Turing machines. This hypothesis immediately implies L$\neq$NL and it was used as a solid foundation to obtain new lower bounds on the computational complexity of various NL search and NL optimization problems. The state complexity of transformation refers to the cost of converting one type of finite automata to another type, where the cost is measured in terms of the increase of the number of inner states of the converted automata from that of the original automata. We relate the linear space hypothesis to the state complexity of transforming restricted 2-way nondeterministic finite automata to computationally equivalent 2-way alternating finite automata having narrow computation graphs. For this purpose, we present state complexity characterizations of 3DSTCON and PsubLIN. We further characterize a nonuniform version of the linear space hypothesis in terms of the state complexity of transformation.

From Graph Properties to Graph Parameters: Tight Bounds for Counting on Small Subgraphs

Abstract:A graph property is a function $\Phi$ that maps every graph to {0, 1} and is invariant under isomorphism. In the $\#IndSub(\Phi)$ problem, given a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, the task is to count the number of $k$-vertex induced subgraphs $G'$ with $\Phi(G')=1$. $\#IndSub(\Phi)$ can be naturally generalized to graph parameters, that is, to functions $\Phi$ on graphs that do not necessarily map to {0, 1}: now the task is to compute the sum $\sum_{G'} \Phi(G')$ taken over all $k$-vertex induced subgraphs $G'$. This problem setting can express a wider range of counting problems (for instance, counting $k$-cycles or $k$-matchings) and can model problems involving expected values (for instance, the expected number of components in a subgraph induced by $k$ random vertices). Our main results are lower bounds on $\#IndSub(\Phi)$ in this setting, which simplify, generalize, and tighten the recent lower bounds of Döring, Marx, and Wellnitz [STOC'24] in various ways. (1) We show a lower bound for every nontrivial edge-monotone graph parameter $\Phi$ with finite codomain (not only for parameters that take value in {0, 1}). (2) The lower bound is tight: we show that, assuming ETH, there is no $f(k)n^{o(k)}$ time algorithm. (3) The lower bound applies also to the modular counting versions of the problem. (4) The lower bound applies also to the multicolored version of the problem. We can extend the #W[1]-hardness result to the case when the codomain of $\Phi$ is not finite, but has size at most $(1 - \varepsilon)\sqrt{k}$ on $k$-vertex graphs. However, if there is no bound on the size of the codomain, the situation changes significantly: for example, there is a nontrivial edge-monotone function $\Phi$ where the size of the codomain is $k$ on $k$-vertex graphs and $\#IndSub(\Phi)$ is FPT.
