Abstract:Cooperative caching can be used to improve the availability and scalability in data sharing and dissemination as well as to reduce the network traffic and query delay. Caching consistency is an important issue in cooperative caching but it has not been adequately addressed for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). In this paper, we proposed a novel approach, called relay peer-based cache consistency (RPCC), to addressing the caching consistency issues in a MANET. With the introduction of relay peers between the source host and the cache nodes, both push-based and pull-based strategies can be employed, which helps to reduce the communication overhead and query latency. The source host pushes the data to the relay peers and the cache nodes pull the data from the relay peers. These operations can be performed asynchronously and simultaneously. Moreover, the proposed RPCC approach is flexible in that it can deal with three kinds of consistency requirements (strong, Delta and weak consistency) adaptively. Simulation results demonstrated that RPCC outperforms the traditional push and pull based strategies by taking their advantages while at the same time avoiding their weakness.
Performance Comparison and Analysis of Routing Strategies in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract:The performance of routing protocols in Mobile Ad hoc network (MANET) always attracts many attentions. As many previous works have shown, routing performance is greatly dependent to the availability and stability of wireless links. Although there are some studies reported to evaluate the performance of routing protocols in MANET, little work is done for the system overall performance, which is generally referred to as the network throughput and the end-to-end delay. This paper evaluates the routing strategies of the three routing protocols (AODV, OLSR and SRMP) and compares their performance under two different mobility models. We study those protocols under varying metrics such as node mobility and network size. Our objective is to provide a qualitative assessment of overall performance of the routing strategies in different mobility model. The results illustrate that the routing strategies behind the three protocols affect their performance deeply. Meanwhile, different from previous results in the literature, the result shows that it is the combination of routing strategies behind the routing protocols to determine the performance in given scenarios.

Abstract:Cooperative caching is a very important technique for efficient data dissemination and sharing in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Many applications have requirements on the consistency of the content cached on different nodes. However, this issue has not been adequately addressed and few of the existing solutions are really adaptive in a dynamic MANET environment. In this paper, we propose a predictive algorithm called PCC (Predictive Caching Consistency) that can make on-line tradeoff between the level of consistency of cached data and the overhead associated with achieving it. Simulation results show that PCC works adaptively and efficiently in a MANET environment, even with dynamic changes in the size of the network, mobility model of nodes, number of queries, and frequency of data updates.
Congestion Control for High Dynamic Ad Hoc Networks: Price Cooperation and Receding Optimization

Abstract:In Ad Hoc networks, there exist two fundamental characteristics: Multi-Hop wireless-based transmission and node mobility. The former results in different contention relationship among flows from that in wireline networks, and the latter leads to the time-varying network situations. Firstly, on the basis of the link's interference set depicting the characteristics of the contention relationship, the congestion control problem for small time interval is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem. Secondly, by using the dual decomposition theory, a price cooperation approach (PCA) is proposed to solve this optimization problem. In PCA, a price framework based on the link's interference set is built. Meanwhile, to implement PCA in realistic ad hoc environment, three deployment techniques are proposed: Queue Size Monitoring, Neighbor Set Approximation, and HELLO-based Message Piggybacking. Otherwise, the network status detection and receding optimization is introduced to deal with the uncertain changes of network situations, and an adaptive optimization strategy (AOS) is proposed correspondingly. The simulation results in MATLAB environment show that AOS has better performance of adaptation to time-varying network situations than PCA. The simulation result in NS2 environment show that PCA and PCA+AOS significantly outperform TCP, ATCP, and ATP in many important performances, including throughput, packet drop ratio, and fairness, under a variety of scenarios and mobility models.
A Cooperative Two-Tier Framework for Efficient Routing in MANET

Abstract:Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET) is a collection of randomly moving wireless devices within a particular area. Unlike in cellular networks, there are no fixed base-stations to support routing and mobility management. Further more, many resources such as power energy and bandwidth are very limited in MANET. Concentrating on these problems, we present acooperative two-tier framework. The framework contains two algorithms, SSCA and DSRU. SSCA is mainly responsible for topology management, and DSRU is responsible for the routing update. SSCA is a GPS based clustering mechanism. By predicting the next location of mobile node with its historic trajectory, it adjusts the node's transmit power in advance, and controls all nodes in suitable size clusters. Based on the clusters, DSRU is proposed in order to control the routing overhead while gets relatively exact global topology information. Experiment on the GloMoSim simulator shows that the framework proposed in this paper results in a notablereduction both in energy consumption and in routing overhead, and a notable improvement in network throughput, especially for the networks composed of high-speed mobile hosts.

Abstract:Data caching can remarkably improve the data availability in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) by reducing the access latency and bandwidth usage. Unfortunately, due to mobility and resource constraints, caching techniques designed for wired network are not applicable to MANETs. Moreover, frequent data updates, limited Mobile Terminal's (MT's) resources, insufficient wireless bandwidth and MT's mobility make cache management a tedious task. However, as MTs in MANETs may have similar tasks and share common interests, cooperative caching, which allows the sharing and coordination of cached data among multiple MTs, can be used to reduce the bandwidth and power consumption. Hence, a nearby MT can serve requests instead of the distant data source. The originality of this paper is concentrated on introducing an Adaptive Cooperative Caching Strategy (ACCS) with a novel cache replacement and prefetching policies. ACCS divides the network into non-overlapping clusters. Unlike other caching techniques that employ reactive routing protocols, ACCS employs a novel built-in table driven routing strategy with no additional penalties. Such behavior significantly minimizing the query delay. The secret lies in collecting the routing information during the clusters formulation, then fill the routing tables accordingly. ACCS has been compared against recent cooperative caching strategies. Experimental results have shown that ACCS outperforms other strategies as it introduced the maximum cache hit as well as the minimum query latency.

Abstract:Cooperative caching is an important technique to support pervasive Internet access. In order to ensure valid data access, the cache consistency must be maintained properly. However, this problem has not been sufficiently studied in mobile computing environments, especially those with ad hoc networks. There are two essential issues in cache consistency maintenance: consistency control initiation and data update propagation. Consistency control initiation not only decides the cache consistency provided to the users, but also impacts the consistency maintenance cost. This issue becomes more challenging in asynchronous and fully distributed ad hoc networks. To this end, we propose the predictive consistency control initiation (PCCI) algorithm, which adaptively initiates consistency control based on its online predictions of forthcoming data updates and cache queries. In order to efficiently propagate data updates through multi-hop wireless connections, the hierarchical data update propagation (HDUP) algorithm is proposed. Theoretical analysis shows that cooperation among the caching nodes facilitates data update propagation. Extensive simulations are conducted to evaluate performance of both PCCI and HDUP. Evaluation results show that PCCI cost-effectively initiates consistency control even when faced with dynamic changes in data update rate, cache query rate, node speed, and number of caching nodes. The evaluation results also show that HDUP saves cost for data update propagation by up to 66%. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Cooperative multicast serves as an efficient communication paradigm for supporting multicast-intensive applications in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Available studies on cooperative multicast in MANETs mainly focus on either the full cooperation or the noncooperation, which fail to capture the more general cooperation behaviors among destination nodes. To address this issue, this paper proposes a general cooperative multicast scheme CM(f, g, p, tau) with replication factor f, multicast fanout g, cooperative probability p, and packet lifetime t. With this scheme, a packet from source node will be replicated to at most f distinct relay nodes, which forward the packet to its g destination nodes, and with probability p a destination node helps to forward the packet. Here, the packet has the lifetime of t time slots. The scheme is flexible and general, and it covers the full cooperation (p = 1) and the noncooperation (p = 0) as special cases. AMarkov chain theoretical model is further developed to depict the packet delivery process under the new scheme and help us to conduct analytical study on the corresponding expected packet delivery probability and packet delivery cost. Finally, extensive simulation and numerical results are provided for discussions.

Abstract:The dynamic changes of the topology caused by the movement of nodes makes routing become one of the key problems in the mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET). So how to optimize routing becomes a hot and difficult topic, among which optimizing routing cache is one of the key techniques. In this paper, we propose an adaptive dynamic cache routing (DCR) strategy based on DSR (Dynamic Source Routing), which can evaluate the link expiration time rapidly. The experimental results show that the DCR has considerable improvement in control packets, packet delivery ratio, packet drops and end-to-end average delay in the MANET.

Abstract:Geographic routing is a scalable routing scheme for wireless networks, where nodes make local routing decisions using position information. Cooperative transmissions utilize spatial diversity to combat fading in wireless channels. In this paper, we incorporate cooperative transmissions into geographic routing, and propose the Location-Aware Cooperative Routing (LACR). In LACR, a node that receives Route Request (RREQ) makes an individual decision on whether and how to rebroadcast RREQ based on its position and capability to cooperate. A theoretical analysis of the impact of cooperative transmissions on the transmission range extension is presented to guide the measurement of the potential performance of each node. Through simulation, we show that LACR performs better in terms of higher probability to find a route and higher throughput in comparison to Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) based routing protocol.

Abstract:The growing popularity of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology in real applications in recent years has sparked increasing interest from both academia and industry in designing resilient P2P networks for these applications. Routing is a crucial technique to support successful P2P applications, and designing robust routing mechanisms is still a technical challenge for P2P systems and applications due to their inherent dynamics. This paper addresses the issue of resilient routing in unstructured P2P networks. To this end, we first propose a novel query routing approach to improving query performance in unstructured P2P networks, and then develop a mobile agent based network reconfiguration mechanism that provides a combined node and link failure diagnosis and restoration to maintain routing performance even in dynamic network environments. Simulated results show that the proposed query routing approach can achieve a good tradeoff between query hit rates and space costs in scale-free networks and that the mobile agent based network reconfiguration mechanism outperforms the existing methods in different types of network topologies.

Abstract:Anycast service is an effective implement method of distributed services in ad hoc network. It can simplify the configuration and management of distributed services. It can further improve the robustness of ad hoc networks to use anycast services in highly dynamic topology environment. According to the features of ad hoc network, a new anycast routing protocol ARDSR is proposed in this paper. This protocol has a lot of advantages such as balancing traffic load, conserving network bandwidth and saving host energy. It accomplishes an effective anycast routing in dynamic ad hoc networks. The simulation results show that the protocol can get good performance in dynamic network environment.

Abstract:This paper proposes and evaluates a new position-based Parallel Routing Protocol (PRP) for simultaneously routing multiple data packets over disjoint paths in a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) for higher reliability and reduced communication delays. PRP views the geographical region where the MANET is located as a virtual 2-dimensional grid of cells. Cell-disjoint (parallel) paths between grid cells are constructed and used for building pre-computed routing tables. A single gateway node in each grid cell handles routing through that grid cell reducing routing overheads. Each node maintains updated information about its own location in the virtual grid using GPS. Nodes also keep track of the location of other nodes using a new proposed cell-based broadcasting algorithm. Nodes exchange energy level information with neighbors allowing energy-aware selection of the gateway nodes. Performance evaluation results have been derived showing the attractiveness of the proposed parallel routing protocol from different respects including low communication delays, high packet delivery ratios, high routing path stability, and low routing overheads.

Abstract:Cooperative relaying has been proposed as a promising transmission technique that effectively creates spatial diversity through the cooperation among spatially distributed nodes. However, to achieve efficient communications while gaining full benefits from cooperation, more interactions at higher protocol layers, particularly the MAC (Medium Access Control) and network layers, are vitally required. This is ignored in most existing articles that mainly focus on physical (PHY)-layer relaying techniques. In this paper, we propose a novel cross-layer framework involving two levels of joint design---a MAC-network cross-layer design for forwarder selection (or termed routing) and a MAC-PHY for relay selection---over symbol-wise varying channels. Based on location knowledge and contention processes, the proposed cross-layer protocol, CoopGeo, aims at providing an efficient, distributed approach to select next hops and optimal relays along a communication path. Simulation results demonstrate that CoopGeo not only operates properly with varying densities of nodes, but performs significantly better than the existing protocol BOSS in terms of packet error rate, transmission error probability, and saturated throughput.

Abstract:This paper proposes a cluster-based multi-path routing in MANET (CBMRP). It distributes traffic among diverse multiple paths to avoid congestion, optimize bandwidth used and improve the sharing rate of channel. It uses clustering’s hierarchical structure diverse to decrease routing control overhead and improve the networks scalability. This algorithm is implemented on the OPNET environment, and the results show that the algorithm can balance the load of the network and deal with the change of the network topology effectively, and also improve the reliability, throughput and stability of the network efficiently.
Maintaining Probabilistic Consistency for Frequently Offline Devices in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract:Maintaining cache consistency in mobile environment is an important issue which is extensively studied in the last decade. In mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), a large number of nonstationary mobile terminals connect with each other through multi-hop unreliable communication channels, coupling with the fact that disconnections from the network are very frequent. Most existing cache consistency strategies assume reliable communication between mobile terminals, which cannot handle frequently offline devices adequately. In this paper, we introduce the probabilistic cache consistency model for applications not requiring strong consistency. Based on this model, a probability consistency strategy (ProP) for frequently offline devices in MANETs is studied. ProP is a randomized pull-based Strategy. It is demostrated to guarantee cache consistency with a high probability. A theoretical model is developed to investigate the performance of the proposed cache consistency strategies, and design guidelines are provided for ProP to choose proper system parameters to achieve probabilistic cache consistency.

Abstract:In the mobile ad hoc networks (MANET), all hosts are roaming. The network that interconnects these mobile hosts is a wireless one with a frequently changing topology, and there are no fixed infrastructures. It is more challenging to develop resource management methods for mobile ad hoc networks compared with infrastructured networks. Many previously proposed mechanisms are not well suited for MANETs, since they either rely on special frameworks or they produce a huge message overhead in resource-constrained networks. In this paper, we propose a novel resource management strategy, which need no special frameworks and directory servers. The approach can be used to many current routing protocols and the QoS issue is also considered. The results of simulation confirm the good performance of our algorithms in different situations in terms of query latency and power consumption

Abstract:Thanks to the great progress in mobile and wireless technologies, Internet-distributed applications like P2P file sharing are nowadays deployed over MANET (i.e., P2P mobile systems). These applications allow users to search and share diverse multimedia resources over MANET. Due the nature of MANET, P2P mobile systems brought up many new thriving challenges regarding the query routing issue. To tackle this problem, we introduce a novel context-aware query routing protocol for unstructured P2P mobile file sharing systems. Our protocol (i) locates relevant peers sharing pertinent resources for user's query and (ii) ensures that those peers would be reached by considering different MANET constraints (e.g., query content, peer mobility, battery energy, peer load). In order to consider all these constraints for choosing the relevant peers, we are based on the technique for order preferences by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). We implemented the proposed protocol and compared its routing efficiency and retrieval effectiveness with another protocol taken from the literature. Experimental results show that our scheme carries out better than the baseline protocol with respect to accuracy

Abstract:Location Dependent Information Services (LDISs) are gaining increasing popularity in recent years. Due to limited client power and intermittent connectivity, caching is an important approach to improve the performance of LDISs. In this paper, we propose a new replacement policy called Location Dependent Cooperative Caching (LDCC). Unlike existing location dependent cache replacement policies, the LDCC strategy applies a prediction model to approximate client movement behaviors and a probabilistic transition model to analyze the communication cost, resulting in a fully improvement of overall performance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed strategy significantly outperforms existing policies.
