Abstract:Software development is becoming a more and more complicated task, and traditional client/server based software engineering management methods may not be suitable for large-scale software development. With the rapid development of the network technologies solutions have been emerged. This paper proposes a software engineering management method based on the Peer-to-Peer infrastructure. By exploring the characteristics of P2P, our system takes "Peer Group" as the unit to build up services such as source code management, task assignment, and software visualization. Our framework overcomes the bottleneck existed in the server in the traditional C/S structure, and transfers the loads of the server to the network boundary. Our method takes full advantages of the computation resources, and increases the system's performances. A performance test using our method in software development for practical applications will also be shown in the paper.

In this paper, based on a specific software architectural style, the dynamic evolution mechanism for distributed system are studied and put into practice. Firstly software architectural style named JB/HMB is described based on hierarchical message bus. Then the dynamic evolution types and processes, which are supported by JB/HMB, are discussed, Finally, ZIS, an implementation of hierarchical message bus, is proposed to support dynamic evolution of distributed system adhered to JB/HMB.

Abstract:Distribution can be a feature of the software evolution process. In other words, temporally and spatially distributed teams and organizations can develop and work on a software application. The simplest case is to outsource production and employ workforce at distributed sites so that multiple distributed teams can work on a project within a parallel framework. If this distribution is global, it will be called the global software evolution or development. A higher level of distribution is defined as decentralization and decentralized software evolution, which means that software development can be independent of the initial provider. It also means that software execution is independent of the initial provider and the initial system so that the software application can easily be reused in different and new projects. However, the high level architecture is managed within a practically centralized framework in the decentralized software evolution. Most of the large scale open-source projects are exemplars of this level. In terms of distribution, there is a higher level of decentralized software evolution called "distributed cognition and leadership". At this level of distribution, all system levels evolve within a distributed framework, and there are no centralized points in the project network and its evolution process. Some open-source software applications are the exemplars of this last level. Not only is the distributed software evolution faced with certain challenges and opportunities to reach its goals, but it has also caused some challenges and opportunities in other fields. This paper conducts a general review of the distributed software evolution. For this purpose, the paper first addresses the importance of the distributed software evolution, and then introduces its noteworthy paradigms.

Abstract:The ubiquitous presence of distributed systems has drastically changed the way the world interacts, and impacted not only the economics and governance but also the society at large. It is therefore important for the architecture and infrastructure within the distributed environment to be continuously renewed in order to cope with the rapid changes driven by the innovative technologies. However, many problems in distributed computing are either of dynamic nature, large scale, NP complete, or a combination of any of these. In most cases, exact solutions are hardly found. As a result, a number of intelligent nature-inspired algorithms have been used recently, as these algorithms are capable of achieving good quality solutions in reasonable computational time. Among all the nature-inspired algorithms, evolutionary algorithms are considerably the most extensively applied ones. This chapter presents a systematic review of evolutionary algorithms employed to solve various problems related to distributed systems. The review is aimed at providing an insight of evolutionary approaches, in particular genetic algorithms and genetic programming, in solving problems in five different areas of network optimization: network topology, routing, protocol synthesis, network security, and parameter settings and configuration. Some interesting applications from these areas will be discussed in detail with the use of illustrative examples.

Abstract:The past few years have witnessed revolutionary advances in network technology. Along with new techniques such as SDN come lots of new network security challenges. Conventional network security mechanisms are incompetent to overcome these challenges, since they are built on a static network configuration that facilitates attackers in finding the weaknesses of a network. In this article, we conceive a novel conceptual network security mechanism, the evolving defense mechanism (EDM), to resolve current and future security problems. EDM is based on a bio-inspired idea of network configuration variations. According to the security requirements of the system, the user, and the network security state, EDM selects an efficient network configuration variation strategy to prevent corresponding security threats. Combined with SDN implementation, EDM resolves security problems from a new angle and is capable of evolving with new network security technology. We sketch a way to implement EDM and present its reference framework, which serves as an ecosystem and coexisting environment for various kinds of network configuration variations. The proposed mechanism avoids the deficiency of conventional mechanisms and has potential to cope with emerging security threats.

Abstract:An increasingly important requirement for software systems is the capability to evolve dynamically according to the changes of computing environment and users' need during runtime. In this paper, a dynamic software architecture oriented approach is proposed to support online evolution. Notably, architecture information is reified as explicit and manipulable entities to organize a runtime architecture meta-model, which is causally connected to software implementation and specification. By using reflection, the evolved architecture meta-model modifies running system, and updates specification simultaneously. The well-defined architecture meta-model supervises all evolutionary behaviors to ensure system consistency, integrity, and evolution traceability. Based on this model, a visualized integrated development platform entitled Artemis-ARC is also successfully implemented. It supports component and service design, development and assembly, especially dynamic evolution. Furthermore, a simple application case is developed with Artemis-ARC to illustrate the effect of online evolution.

Abstract:Information systems(IS) dynamic evolability,which is system's crucial ability to adapt to the requirements of IT development,organizational business and environmental changes,has induced widespread and thorough focuses and researches,especially for real-time and distributed systems.This paper summarizes some related researches,and introduces a systems engineering and modeling method to study IS dynamic evolution from three perspectives named behavioral continuity,trigger mechanisms and abstractions of dynamic evolution,and proposes a dynamic evolution-oriented systems architecture.The comprehensive series of IS dynamic evolution theory,systems engineering and modeling method,suggested tools,and proposed systems architecture form a complete methodology for dynamic evolution-oriented IS analysis and design,which facilitates the theoretical investigations and practical explorations in this area.

Abstract:Based on the theory of cellular automata, this paper stimulates and studies the dynamic evolution of network software, especially in the context of Web services composition. First, the paper discussed the need of trust software engineering based on cellular automata stimulating the dynamic evolutions of network software. Then, a series of algorithms and rules have been proposed, such as how to replace the software components during emergencies like network interruption and software upgrade. Finally, some experiments are presented and the results are analyzed, which show that our method can well simulate the evolution of the trends of network software. It plays a critical role in Web Services-based software monitoring, replacement and maintenance, etc.

Abstract:Many software systems need to provide services continuously and uninterruptedly. Meanwhile, these software systems need to keep evolving continuously to fix bugs, add functions, improve algorithms, adapt to new running environments and platforms, or prevent potential problems. This situation makes online evolution an important issue in the field of software maintenance and evolution. This paper proposes a component-based approach to online software evolution. Nowadays component technology has been widely adopted. Component technology facilitates software evolution, but also introduces some new issues. In our approach, an application server is used to evolve the application, without special support from the compiler or operating system. Abstract:The rapid development of parallel and distributed computing paradigms has brought about great revolution in computing. Thanks to the intrinsic parallelism of evolutionary computation (EC), it is natural to implement EC on parallel and distributed computing systems. On the one hand, the computing power provided by parallel computing systems can significantly improve the efficiency and scalability of EC. On the other hand, data are collected and processed in a distributed manner, which brings a novel development direction and new challenges to EC. In this paper, we intend to give a systematic review on distributed EC (DEC). First, a new taxonomy for DEC is proposed from top design mechanism to bottom implementation mechanism. Based on this taxonomy, existing studies on DEC are reviewed in terms of purpose, parallel structure of the algorithm, parallel model for implementation, and the implementation environment. Second, we clarify two major purposes of DEC, i.e., improving efficiency through parallel processing for centralized optimization and cooperating distributed individuals/sub-populations with partial information to perform distributed optimization. Third, noting that the latter purpose of DEC is an emerging and attractive trend for EC with the booming of spatially distributed paradigms, this paper gives a systematic definition of the distributed optimization and classifies it into dimension distributed-, data distributed-, and objective distributed-optimization problems. Formal formulations for these problems are provided and various DEC studies on these problems are reviewed. We also discuss challenges and potential research directions, aiming to enlighten the design of DEC and pave the way for future developments.
An application server to support online evolution

Abstract:Most online evolution of an application depends on its runtime environment. This paper addresses how to support online evolution by an application server, which is considered as a third kind of system software, besides OS and DBMS. From the view of requirements, evolutions of software can be divided into four categories: evolutions that do not alter requirements, evolutions that alter functional requirements, evolutions that alter local constraint requirements, and evolutions that alter global constraint requirements. All changes at the requirement level should be mapped to changes at the implementation level. In our approach implementation level entities, such as components and interceptors are responsible for online evolution. Evolutions in implementation level include adding, removing, updating, and reconfiguring the entities. One of the keys to our approach is to carefully distinguish states of components and interceptors, that is, whether they are in a ready, active, executing or evolving state. A well-designed architecture and feasible mechanisms for runtime instance loading are also keys to the solution. Based on this approach, an application server prototype, named PKUAS, has been implemented and is introduced in our paper.

Abstract:Many critical application systems need constant evolving for correcting bugs, extending functions or improve system's performance. However, they need to have abilities to afford service when they are being updated, i. e, their being updated have to be implemented dynamically. To transparently support distributed systems' dynamic updating, the following work need to be done with: automatically propagate updating messages; change nodes' components' call from old to new interfaces; test systems' validity and consistency after updating; do with the tolerance if updated sys- tem is invalid or inconsistent; support interaction between multi-version components; do with messages after updating which arrived at updating. This paper presents general introduction about requirements, functions, key research prob- lems, related work and future work for building supporting-system for dynamically updating distributed system.

Abstract:Evolution is one of the major omnipresent powers in the universe that has been studied for about two centuries. Recent scientific and technical developments make it possible to make the transition from passively understanding to actively mastering evolution. As of today, the only area where human experimenters can design and manipulate evolutionary processes in full is that of Evolutionary Computing, where evolutionary processes are carried out in a digital space, inside computers, in simulation. We argue that in the near future it will be possible to move evolutionary computing outside such imaginary spaces and make it physically embodied. In other words, we envision the "Evolution of Things", rather than just the evolution of code, leading to a new field of Embodied Artificial Evolution (EAE). The main objective of the present paper is to offer an umbrella term and vision in order to aid the development of this high potential research area. To this end, we introduce the notion of EAE, discuss a few examples and applications, and elaborate on the expected benefits as well as the grand challenges this developing field will have to address.

Abstract:For the issue of that Spring,the open source framework does not support dynamic evolutions,this paper comes up with a component dynamic evolution mechanism based on Spring,from the view of the development mode and architecture of software system.This mechanism divides the system's business logic and configuration files into many modules from the point of development mode.In the aspect of architecture,it leads in evolution agent to decouple the invoking among modules,while modules and their callings are managed and controlled uniformly by instance management center.This mechanism is implemented in the Spring framework,and it is proved by calculating the value of Π.Experimental results show that the mechanism can let system implement evolutions at run-time and does not influence the system efficiency.

Abstract:In order to meet the increasing scale and users requirements for the distributed object computing (DOC) systems, their infrastructures are highly desirable to be redesigned. Based on the principles of immune system and the evolution mechanisms learned from an antibody network model, a novel evolutionary framework for DOC (E-DOC) is proposed. The antibody network model as well as the evolution process including clonal proliferation, immune elimination, and immune memory is studied. Then, E-DOC framework based on the antibody network is proposed, whose simulation platform is designed and implemented. On the platform, the evolutionary features are studied by: (1) diversity and stability of antibodies and genotypes, (2) detection and elimination of antigens, (3) effect of immune memory, and (4) tendency of eliminated and stimulated antigens. The experiment results show that the proposed framework can achieve the evolution ability and the promising performance, which are critical to DOC systems. E-DOC is extendable for the future design of distributed object middleware, such as WebSphere Application Server and BEA WebLogic Application Server.

Abstract:Along with the green attentions and efforts on energy efficiency of computer hardware and embedded systems, software relevant sustainability issues are becoming increasingly focused, as a part of Green Information Technology (GIT). Undoubtedly, software evolution capability is a vital part in achieving such sustainability, as software that is not adaptable will become obsolete sooner or later. Internetware is currently one of the prevailing paradigms of software evolution, known as its autonomous, cooperative, situational, evolvable, emergent and trustworthy. In this paper, we propose an approach of evolution focusing on sustainability for Internetware software entities. Targeting certain software systems which cannot actively control their functions, service components or attached actuators energy-efficiently, the proposed transformation mechanism can intelligently implement power management adaptations using Web Ontology Language (OWL) -based user behavioral profiles and reasoning mechanisms. In the effort of increasing the sustainability, the transformation consequently enables a greener, predicted and rapidly adapted evolution.

Abstract:With the requirements of continuous service in mission and safety critical software applications,shutdown and restart system during software upgrade are unacceptable.Dynamic update with foundation of runtime software evolution becomes a way to solve these problems.But as the variety of component style,ability,and communicating protocols,component substitute may encounter incompatibility.And force updating without adaptation may endanger the stability and correctness of current system.This paper focuses the behaviors of component,uses the architecture description language based on Wright,and uses the description method based on CSP,to describe the behaviors between components,to analyze the difference of behaviors before update.Be sure that the new component behaviors satisfy the system's requirements.And this mechanism ensures the correctness and security of dynamic update,and enhances the self-adaptability of system evolution.

Abstract:Modern information systems, such as enterprise applications and e-commerce applications, often consist of databases surrounded by a large variety of software applications depending on the databases. During the evolution and deployment of such information systems, developers have to ensure the global consistency between database schemas and surrounding software applications. However, in such situations as Enterprise Application Integration (EAI), databases are shared by a number of software applications contributed by different independent parties, and the developers of those applications often have little or no control on when and how database schema evolves over time. As a result, databases and software applications may not always remain in sync. Such inconsistency may lead to data loss, program failures, or decreased performance. The fundamental challenge in evolving and deploying such database-centric information systems is the fact that databases and their surrounding software applications are subject to independent, asynchronous, and potentially conflicting evolution processes. In this paper, we present an approach to automatically adapting software applications to the evolution of their underlying databases by graph-based schema differencing and aspect-oriented dynamic patching. Our empirical study shows that our approach can automatically adapt software applications to a number of common types of database schema evolution, which accounts for over 87.5% of all schema evolution in the subject system. Our approach allows database schema maintainer to evolve database schema more freely without being afraid of breaking surrounding software applications; it also allows application developers to catch up database schema evolution more quickly without diverting too much from their main business concerns.
