Abstract:By identifying a family of corner cutting schemes as a dimension elevation process of Gelfond-Bezier curves, we give a Muntz type condition for the convergence of the generated control polygons to the underlying curve. The surprising emergence of the Muntz condition in the problem raises the question of a possible connection between the density questions of nested Chebyshev spaces and the convergence of the corresponding dimension elevation algorithms.

Abstract:The goal of this work is to give new quantitative results about the distribution of semi-arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces in the moduli space of closed hyperbolic surfaces. We show that two coverings of genus $g$ of a fixed arithmetic surface $S$ are $P(\frac{1}{g})$ apart from each other with respect to Teichmuller metric, where $P$ is a polynomial depending only on $S$ whose degree is universal. We also give a super-exponential upper bound for the number of semi-arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces with bounded genus, stretch and degree of invariant trace field, generalizing for this class similar well known bounds for arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces. In order to get these results we establish, for any closed hyperbolic surface $S$ with injectivity radius at least $s$, a parametrization of Teichmuller space by length functions whose values on $S$ are bounded by a linear function (with constants depending only on $s$) on the logarithmic of the genus of $S.$

Abstract:The classical four vertex theorem describes a fundamental property of simple closed planar curves. It has been extended to space curves, namely a smooth, simple closed curve in R-3 has at least four points with vanishing torsion if it lies on a convex surface. More recently, Ghomi [6] extended this property to curves lying on locally convex surfaces. In this paper we provide an alternative approach to the result via the theory of Monge-Ampere equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove an intersection-theoretic result pertaining to curves in certain Hilbert modular surfaces in positive characteristic. Specifically, we show that given two appropriate curves C,D parameterizing abelian surfaces with real multiplication, the set of points (x,y) in the product CxD with surfaces parameterized by x and y isogenous to each other is Zariski dense in C x D, thereby proving a case of a just-likely intersection conjecture. We also compute the change in Faltings height under appropriate p-power isogenies of abelian surfaces with real multiplication over characteristic p global fields.

Formal principle with convergence for rational curves of Goursat type

Abstract:We propose a conjecture that a general member of a bracket-generating family of rational curves in a complex manifold satisfies the formal principle with convergence, namely, any formal equivalence between such curves is convergent. If the normal bundles of the rational curves are positive, the conjecture follows from the results of Commichau-Grauert and Hirschowitz. We prove the conjecture for the opposite case when the normal bundles are furthest from positive vector bundles among bracket-generating families, namely, when the families of rational curves are of Goursat type. The proof uses natural ODEs associated to rational curves of Goursat type and corresponding Cartan connections constructed by Doubrov-Komrakov-Morimoto. As an example, we see that a general line on a smooth cubic fourfold satisfies the formal principle with convergence.

On Kainen's conjectures on surface crossing numbers

Abstract:In 1972, Kainen proved a general lower bound on the crossing number of a graph in a closed surface and conjectured that this bound is tight when the graph is either a complete graph or a complete bipartite graph, and the surface is of genus close to the minimum genus of that graph. Prior to the present work, these conjectures were known to be true only for small cases and when the conjectures predict a crossing number of 0, i.e., when a triangular or quadrangular embedding was already known. We show that Kainen's conjectures are true except for the three graphs $K_9$, $K_{3,5}$, and $K_{5,5}$. We also prove nonorientable analogues of these conjectures, where the only exceptions to the general formulas are $K_7$ and $K_8$.

Abstract:Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.

Abstract:For a pair of maps phi: M --> P and psi: P --> M between compact surfaces, the minimum number of fixed points in the homotopy class of phi . psi may differ from that of psi . phi. We give a sufficient condition for them to be the same, improving a recent result of M.R. Kelly. It is then applied to show that for every surface of negative Euler characteristic, the difference between the minimum number of fixed points and the Nielsen number can be arbitrarily large. The corresponding question for boundary-preserving self-maps of orientable 3-manifolds is also discussed.

Some fast algorithms for curves in surfaces

Abstract:We present some algorithms that provide useful topological information about curves in surfaces. One of the main algorithms computes the geometric intersection number of two properly embedded 1-manifolds $C_1$ and $C_2$ in a compact orientable surface $S$. The surface $S$ is presented via a triangulation or a handle structure, and the 1-manifolds are given in normal form via their normal coordinates. The running time is bounded above by a polynomial function of the number of triangles in the triangulation (or the number of handles in the handle structure), and the logarithm of the weight of $C_1$ and $C_2$. This algorithm represents an improvement over previous work, since its running time depends polynomially on the size of the triangulation of $S$ and it can deal with closed surfaces, unlike many earlier algorithms. Another algorithm, with similar bounds on its running time, can determine whether $C_1$ and $C_2$ are isotopic. We also present a closely related algorithm that can be used to place a standard 1-manifold into normal form.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective algebraic variety over a number field $k$ and $P$ in $X(k)$. In 2007, the second author conjectured that, in a precise sense, if rational points on $X$ are dense enough, then the best rational approximations to $P$ must lie on a curve. We present a strategy for deducing a slightly weaker conjecture from Vojta's conjecture, and execute this strategy for the full conjecture for split surfaces.

Abstract:We study the minimal degrees and gonalities of curves on complete intersections. We prove a classical conjecture which asserts that the degree of any curve on a general complete intersection $X \subseteq \mathbb{P}^N$ cut out by polynomials of large degrees is bounded from below by the degree of $X$. As an application, we verify a conjecture of Bastianelli--De Poi--Ein--Lazarsfeld--Ullery on measures of irrationality for complete intersections.

Abstract:In this note we study numerically the combinatorics of curves and geodesics on the torus with one boundary component. A potential computational difficulty is avoided by counting inside specific orbits of the mapping class group up to a certain length, either geometric or combinatorial. Some cases are rigurolosly determined and the Euler totient function emerges. More complicated orbits are computed to suggest an array of formulae continuing to involve the Euler totient function. We formulate six precise conjectures. These include a novel study of an "inverse" function of the Mirzakhani's asymptotics. The geometric part of our study was motivated by the rationality aspect of these asymptotics.

Abstract:In this paper, we study whether a given morphism $f$ from the tangent bundle of $\mathbb{P}^1$ to a balanced vector bundle of degree $(n+1)d$ is induced by the restriction of the tangent bundle $T_{\mathbb{P}^n}$ to a rational curve of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$. We propose a conjecture on this problem based on Mathematica computations of some examples and provide computer-assisted proof of the conjecture for certain values of $n$ and $d$.

Abstract:This note answers some questions on holomorphic curves and their distribution in an algebraic surface of positive index. More specifically, we exploit the existence of natural negatively curved "pseudo-Finsler" metrics on a surface S of general type whose Chern numbers satisfy c(2)1>2c2 to show that a holomorphic map of a Riemann surface to S whose image is not in any rational or elliptic curve must satisfy a distance decreasing property with respect to these metrics. We show as a consequence that such a map extends over isolated punctures. So assuming that the Riemann surface is obtained from a compact one of genus q by removing a finite number of points, then the map is actually algebraic and defines a compact holomorphic curve in S. Furthermore, the degree of the curve with respect to a fixed polarization is shown to be bounded above by a multiple of q - 1 irrespective of the map.

Abstract:We show that there is a constant c such that any 3‐uniform hypergraph H with n vertices and at least cn5/2 edges contains a triangulation of the real projective plane as a subgraph. This resolves a conjecture of Kupavskii, Polyanskii, Tomon and Zakharov. Furthermore, our work, combined with prior results, asymptotically determines the Turán number of all surfaces.
