Abstract:Given a node-weighted graph, the minimum-weighted dominating set (MWDS) problem is to find a minimum-weighted vertex subset such that, for any vertex, it is contained in this subset or it has a neighbor contained in this set. And the minimum-weighted connected dominating set (MWCDS) problem is to find a MWDS such that the graph induced by this subset is connected. In this paper, we study these two problems on a unit disk graph. A (4 +ε)-approximation algorithm for an MWDS based on a dynamic programming algorithm for a Min-Weight Chromatic Disk Cover is presented. Meanwhile, we also propose a (1 +ε)-approximation algorithm for the connecting part by showing a polynomial-time approximation scheme for a Node-Weighted Steiner Tree problem when the given terminal set is c-local and thus obtain a (5 +ε)-approximation algorithm for an MWCDS.
Coloring graphs with forbidden almost bipartite subgraphs

Abstract:Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov conjectured in 1999 that for every finite graph $F$, there exists a quantity $c(F)$ such that $\chi(G) \leqslant (c(F) + o(1)) \Delta / \log\Delta$ whenever $G$ is an $F$-free graph of maximum degree $\Delta$. The largest class of connected graphs $F$ for which this conjecture has been verified so far, by Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov themselves, comprises the almost bipartite graphs (i.e., subgraphs of the complete tripartite graph $K_{1,t,t}$ for some $t \in \mathbb{N}$). However, the optimal value for $c(F)$ remains unknown even for such graphs. Bollobás showed, using random regular graphs, that $c(F) \geqslant 1/2$ when $F$ contains a cycle. On the other hand, Davies, Kang, Pirot, and Sereni recently established an upper bound of $c(K_{1,t,t}) \leqslant t$. We improve this to a constant, showing $c(F) \leqslant 4$ for every almost bipartite graph $F$. This surprisingly makes the bound independent of $F$ in all the known cases of the conjecture, leading us to make a new conjecture that $c(F)$ is always bounded above by some constant $c$ independent of $F$. We also establish a more general version of our bound in the setting of DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) and consider some algorithmic consequences of our results.

A Note on Fractional DP-Coloring of Graphs

Abstract:DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring introduced by Dvořák and Postle in 2015. In 2019, Bernshteyn, Kostochka, and Zhu introduced a fractional version of DP-coloring. They showed that unlike the fractional list chromatic number, the fractional DP-chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted $\chi_{_{DP}}^*(G)$, can be arbitrarily larger than $\chi^*(G)$, the graph's fractional chromatic number. We generalize a result of Alon, Tuza, and Voigt (1997) on the fractional list chromatic number of odd cycles, and, in the process, show that for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$, $\chi_{_{DP}}^*(C_{2k+1}) = \chi^*(C_{2k+1})$. We also show that for any $n \geq 2$ and $m \in \mathbb{N}$, if $p^*$ is the solution in $(0,1)$ to $p=(1-p)^n$ then $\chi_{_{DP}}^*(K_{n,m})\leq1/p^*$, and we prove a generalization of this result for multipartite graphs. Finally, we determine a lower bound on $\chi_{_{DP}}^*(K_{2,m})$ for any $m \geq 3$.

Abstract:It was a long-standing open problem whether the minimum weight dominating set in unit disk graphs has a polynomial-time constant-approximation. In 2006, Ambuhl et al solved this problem by presenting a 72-approximation for the minimum weight dominating set and also a 89-approximation for the minimum weight connected dominating set in unit disk graphs. In this paper, we improve their results by giving a (6 + epsilon)-approximation for the minimum weight dominating set and a (10 + epsilon)-approximation for the minimum weight connected dominating set in unit disk graphs where epsilon is any small positive number.

Abstract:We give a $(1.796+\epsilon)$-approximation for the minimum sum coloring problem on chordal graphs, improving over the previous 3.591-approximation by Gandhi et al. [2005]. To do so, we also design the first polynomial-time approximation scheme for the maximum $k$-colorable subgraph problem in chordal graphs.

Abstract:Inspired by the applications in on-demand manufacturing, we introduce the online k -color spanning disk problem, the first online model for color spanning problems to the best of our knowledge. Given a set P of n colored points in a plane, with each color chosen from a set C of m ≤ n colors, the online k -color spanning disk problem determines the location of the center that minimizes the accumulated radius of the minimum spanning disks for a sequence of color sets, denoted by δ =⟨ C_1,C_2,… ,C_T⟩ , C_t⊆ C , |C_t| ≥ k , t∈{1, 2, … , T} , as they are presented online. Here, a minimum spanning disk for a color set means a disk contains at least one point of each color. We construct a special instance to establish a lower bound on the performance of any online algorithms. Then, an O(nmlog n) -time Voronoi-diagram-based algorithm is designed such that its competitive ratio matches the problem’s lower bound. This implies our algorithm is theoretically the best possible in terms of the competitive ratio. We also introduce and study a variant, named the online balanced k -color spanning disk problem, for which a non-trivial lower bound and a best possible algorithm are presented.
Bipartizing (Pseudo-)Disk Graphs: Approximation with a Ratio Better than 3

Abstract:In a disk graph, every vertex corresponds to a disk in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and two vertices are connected by an edge whenever the two corresponding disks intersect. Disk graphs form an important class of geometric intersection graphs, which generalizes both planar graphs and unit-disk graphs. We study a fundamental optimization problem in algorithmic graph theory, Bipartization (also known as Odd Cycle Transversal), on the class of disk graphs. The goal of Bipartization is to delete a minimum number of vertices from the input graph such that the resulting graph is bipartite. A folklore (polynomial-time) $3$-approximation algorithm for Bipartization on disk graphs follows from the classical framework of Goemans and Williamson [Combinatorica'98] for cycle-hitting problems. For over two decades, this result has remained the best known approximation for the problem (in fact, even for Bipartization on unit-disk graphs). In this paper, we achieve the first improvement upon this result, by giving a $(3-\alpha)$-approximation algorithm for Bipartization on disk graphs, for some constant $\alpha>0$. Our algorithm directly generalizes to the broader class of pseudo-disk graphs. Furthermore, our algorithm is robust in the sense that it does not require a geometric realization of the input graph to be given.

Abstract:The concept of DP-coloring of a graph is a generalization of list coloring introduced by Dvořák and Postle (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 129 , 38–54, 2018). Multiple DP-coloring of graphs, as a generalization of multiple list coloring, was first studied by Bernshteyn, Kostochka and Zhu (J. Graph Theory 93 , 203–221, 2020). This paper proves that planar graphs without 3-cycles and normally adjacent 4-cycles are (7 m , 2 m )-DP-colorable for every integer m . As a consequence, the strong fractional choice number of any planar graph without 3-cycles and normally adjacent 4-cycles is at most 7/2.

Improved Approximation Algorithms for Weighted Edge Coloring of Graphs

Abstract:We study weighted edge coloring of graphs, where we are given an undirected edge-weighted general multi-graph $G := (V, E)$ with weights $w : E \rightarrow [0, 1]$. The goal is to find a proper weighted coloring of the edges with as few colors as possible. An edge coloring is called a proper weighted coloring if the sum of the weights of the edges incident to a vertex of any color is at most one. In the online setting, the edges are revealed one by one and have to be colored irrevocably as soon as they are revealed. We show that $3.39m+o(m)$ colors are enough when the maximum number of neighbors of a vertex over all the vertices is $o(m)$ and where $m$ is the maximum over all vertices of the minimum number of unit-sized bins needed to pack the weights of the incident edges to that vertex. We also prove the tightness of our analysis. This improves upon the previous best upper bound of $5m$ by Correa and Goemans [STOC 2004]. For the offline case, we show that for a simple graph with edge disjoint cycles, $m+1$ colors are sufficient and for a multi-graph tree, we show that $1.693m+12$ colors are sufficient.

Deterministic approximate counting of colorings with fewer than $2Δ$ colors via absence of zeros

Abstract:Let $\Delta,q\geq 3$ be integers. We prove that there exists $\eta\geq 0.002$ such that if $q\geq (2-\eta)\Delta$, then there exists an open set $\mathcal{U}\subset \mathbb{C}$ that contains the interval $[0,1]$ such that for each $w\in \mathcal{U}$ and any graph $G=(V,E)$ of maximum degree at most $\Delta$, the partition function of the anti-ferromagnetic $q$-state Potts model evaluated at $w$ does not vanish. This provides a (modest) improvement on a result of Liu, Sinclair, and Srivastava, and breaks the $q=2\Delta$-barrier for this problem. As a direct consequence we obtain via Barvinok's interpolation method a deterministic polynomial time algorithm to approximate the number of proper $q$-colorings of graphs of maximum degree at most $\Delta$, provided $q\geq (2-\eta)\Delta$.

Abstract:The DP-coloring is a generalization of the list coloring, introduced by Dvořák and Postle. Let be a cover of a graph G and be the number of -colorings of G . The DP color function of G , introduced by Kaul and Mudrock, is the minimum value of where the minimum is taken over all possible m -fold covers of G . For the family of n -vertex connected graphs, one can deduce that trees maximize the DP color function, from two results of Kaul and Mudrock. In this paper we obtain tight upper bounds for the DP color function of n -vertex 2-connected graphs. Another concern in this paper is the canonical labeling in a cover. It is well known that if an m -fold cover of a graph G has a canonical labeling, then in which P ( G , m ) is the chromatic polynomial of G . However the converse statement of this conclusion is not always true. We give examples that for some m and G , there exists an m -fold cover of G such that , but has no canonical labelings. We also prove that when G is a unicyclic graph or a theta graph, for each , if , then has a canonical labeling.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 3004-3027, December 2024. A proper coloring of a graph is conflict-free if, for every nonisolated vertex, some color is used exactly once on its neighborhood. Caro, Petruševski, and Škrekovski [Discrete Math., 346 (2023), 113221] proved that every graph [math] has a proper conflict-free coloring with at most [math] colors and conjectured that [math] colors suffice for every connected graph [math] with [math]. Our first main result is that even for list-coloring, [math] colors suffice for every graph [math] with [math]; we also prove slightly weaker bounds for all graphs with [math]. These results follow from our more general framework on proper conflict-free list-coloring of a pair consisting of a graph [math] and a "conflict" hypergraph [math]. As another corollary of our results in this general framework, every graph has a proper [math]-list-coloring such that every bichromatic component is a path on at most three vertices, where the number of colors is optimal up to a constant factor. Our proof uses a fairly new type of recursive counting argument called Rosenfeld counting, which is a variant of the Lovász local lemma or entropy compression. We also prove an asymptotically optimal result for a fractional analogue of our general framework for proper conflict-free coloring for pairs of a graph and a conflict hypergraph. A corollary states that every graph [math] has a fractional [math]-coloring such that every fractionally bichromatic component has at most two vertices. In particular, it implies that the fractional analogue of the conjecture of Caro, Petruševski, and Škrekovski holds asymptotically in a strong sense.

Coloring hypergraphs that are the union of nearly disjoint cliques

Abstract:We consider the maximum chromatic number of hypergraphs consisting of cliques that have pairwise small intersections. Designs of the appropriate parameters produce optimal constructions, but these are known to exist only when the number of cliques is exponential in the clique size. We construct near designs where the number of cliques is polynomial in the clique size, and show that they have large chromatic number. The case when the cliques have pairwise intersections of size at most one seems particularly challenging. Here we give lower bounds by analyzing a random greedy hypergraph process. We also consider the related question of determining the maximum number of caps in a finite projective/affine plane and obtain nontrivial upper and lower bounds.

Abstract:Graph coloring is a fundamental graph problem that is widely applied in a variety of applications. The aim of graph coloring is to minimize the number of colors used to color the vertices in a graph such that no two incident vertices have the same color. Existing solutions for graph coloring mainly focus on computing a good coloring for a static graph. However, since many real-world graphs are highly dynamic, in this paper, we aim to incrementally maintain the graph coloring when the graph is dynamically updated. We target on two goals: high effectiveness and high efficiency. To achieve high effectiveness, we maintain the graph coloring in a way such that the coloring result is consistent with one of the best static graph coloring algorithms for large graphs. To achieve high efficiency, we investigate efficient incremental algorithms to update the graph coloring by exploring a small number of vertices. We design a color-propagation based algorithm which only explores the vertices within the 2-hop neighbors of the update-related and color-changed vertices. We then propose a novel color index to maintain some summary color information and, thus, bound the explored vertices within the neighbors of these vertices. Moreover, we derive some effective pruning rules to further reduce the number of propagated vertices. The experimental results demonstrate the high effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.

We study two optimization problems in dotted interval graphs that find application in high-throughput genotyping. We present improved approximations for minimum coloring and the first approximation for maximum independent set in dotted interval graphs.

Abstract:The Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture states that for a graph $G$, if $\Delta(G)\geq9$, then $\chi(G)\leq\max\{\Delta(G)-1,\omega(G)\}$. We use $P_t$ and $C_t$ to denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. Let $C=v_1v_2v_3v_4v_5v_1$ be an induced $C_5$. A {\em $C_5^+$} is a graph obtained from $C$ by adding a $C_3=xyzx$ and a $P_2=t_1t_2$ such that (1) $x$ and $y$ are both exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_2,v_3$ in $V(C)$, $z$ is exactly adjacent to $v_2$ in $V(C)$, $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$ and $t_2$ is exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$, (2) $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $z$ in $\{x,y,z\}$ and $t_2$ has no neighbors in $\{x,y,z\}$. In this paper, we show that the Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture holds for ($P_6,C_4,H$)-free graphs, where $H\in \{K_7,C_5^+\}$. This generalizes some results of Gupta and Pradhan in \cite{GP21,GP24}.

Improved Lower Bounds for Sum Coloring via Clique Decomposition

Abstract:Given an undirected graph $G = (V,E)$ with a set $V$ of vertices and a set $E$ of edges, the minimum sum coloring problem (MSCP) is to find a legal vertex coloring of $G$, using colors represented by natural numbers $1, 2, . . .$ such that the total sum of the colors assigned to the vertices is minimized. This paper describes an approach based on the decomposition of the original graph into disjoint cliques for computing lower bounds for the MSCP. Basically, the proposed approach identifies and removes at each extraction iteration a maximum number of cliques of the same size (the largest possible) from the graph. Computational experiments show that this approach is able to improve on the current best lower bounds for 14 benchmark instances, and to prove optimality for the first time for 4 instances. We also report lower bounds for 24 more instances for which no such bounds are available in the literature. These new lower bounds are useful to estimate the quality of the upper bounds obtained with various heuristic approaches.

Approximating maximum-size properly colored forests

Abstract:In the Properly Colored Spanning Tree problem, we are given an edge-colored undirected graph and the goal is to find a properly colored spanning tree, i.e., a spanning tree in which any two adjacent edges have distinct colors. The problem is interesting not only from a graph coloring point of view, but is also closely related to the Degree Bounded Spanning Tree and (1,2)-Traveling Salesman problems, two classical questions that have attracted considerable interest in combinatorial optimization and approximation theory. Previous work on properly colored spanning trees has mainly focused on determining the existence of such a tree and hence has not considered the question from an algorithmic perspective. We propose an optimization version called Maximum-size Properly Colored Forest problem, which aims to find a properly colored forest with as many edges as possible. We consider the problem in different graph classes and for different numbers of colors, and present polynomial-time approximation algorithms as well as inapproximability results for these settings. Our proof technique relies on the sum of matching matroids defined by the color classes, a connection that might be of independent combinatorial interest.
