Abstract:Current dynamic-epistemic logics model different types of information change in multi-agent scenarios. We generalize these logics to a probabilistic setting, obtaining a calculus for multi-agent update with three natural slots: prior probability on states, occurrence probabilities in the relevant process taking place, and observation probabilities of events. To match this update mechanism, we present a complete dynamic logic of information change with a probabilistic character. The completeness proof follows a compositional methodology that applies to a much larger class of dynamic-probabilistic logics as well. Finally, we discuss how our basic update rule can be parameterized for different update policies, or learning methods.

Abstract:Logical languages define propositions that describe states of the world, represented by some suitably chosen model. The typical format for this is a semantic truth definition M, s &vDash;&phis; saying that formula &phis; is true at state s of model M. In terms of this schema, one can then define valid reasoning as all steps from formulas to formulas that preserve truth. The usual systems of epistemic logic follow this set-up, and the resulting account of reasoning is useful and well-known. But there is also a limitation to this perspective. It leaves out the 'logical dynamics' of many natural processes, such as communicating information. In that case, the basic phenomena are actions which change information states of speakers and hearers, and the locus of 'meaning' for a proposition is not its static content, but the dynamic change it induces from one model M, viewed as an information state for logical agents, to another: announcing &phis; changes M, s into N, t. One now becomes interested in cognitive actions like informing, questioning, answering - with inference as an important, but by no means the only example. This Dynamic Turn has emerged in many areas: linguistics (Kamp, Heim, Groenendijk & Stokhof), philosophy and AI (Gärdenfors, Harman), computational linguistics (Gross & Sidner, Gabbay, Kempson & Meyer Viol) and computer science (Fagin/Halpern/Moses/Vardi, Abramsky, Reiter). This tutorial presents an overview of update logics for communicative actions. The basic tool is: Hintikka-Kripke models for epistemic languages. The difficult questions are twofold. First, what precise updates are induced by various types of communicative action? One line in the literature has looked at examples of increasing complexity. Models and update procedures are simple for questions/answers, or public announcements, but they get much more complex as communication gets more 'private'. We follow one such line in current research, referring to work by Veltman, Groeneveld & Gerbrandy, and Baltag, Solecki & Moss on information update in conversation and games, whose current challenges include more complex linguistic expressions, defaults and cryptographic communication. This requires building sophisticated models in harmony with the observed phenomena. Our second topic concerns new logical issues in this setting. In a way, all relevant dynamics is contained in existing epistemic logics cum temporal models. But this observation is no more useful than saying we can do most of modern logic inside first-order logic, and all of it inside set theory. Instead, we survey new questions beyond the usual agenda. Examples are: (a) relating model-theoretic to syntactic views of update, (b) (non-)persistence of assertions under update, (c) calculi for short-term dynamic 'local inference', and connections with longer-term 'global inference'. Abstract:Statements convey information, by modifying knowledge states of hearers and speakers. This dynamic aspect of communication goes beyond the usual role of logic as a provider of static ‘truth conditions’. But it can be modelled rather nicely in so-called ‘update logics’, which have been developed since the 1980s. These systems provide a fresh look at standard logic, letting the usual models undergo suitable changes as agents absorb the content of successive utterances or messages. This lecture is a brief Whig history of update logics, with an emphasis on many-agent epistemic languages. We discuss straight update, questions and answers, and the delightful complexities of communication under various constraints. We hope to convey the attraction of giving a dynamic twist to wellknown things, such as simple modal models, or basic epistemic formulas.

Abstract:A natural way to represent beliefs and the process of updating beliefs is presented by Bayesian probability theory, where belief of an agent a in P can be interpreted as a considering that P is more probable than not P. This paper attempts to get at the core logical notion underlying this. The paper presents a sound and complete neighbourhood logic for conditional belief and knowledge, and traces the connections with probabilistic logics of belief and knowledge. The key notion in this paper is that of an agent a believing P conditionally on having information Q, where it is assumed that Q is compatible with what a knows. Conditional neighbourhood logic can be viewed as a core system for reasoning about subjective plausibility that is not yet committed to an interpretation in terms of numerical probability. Indeed, every weighted Kripke model gives rise to a conditional neighbourhood model, but not vice versa. We show that our calculus for conditional neighbourhood logic is sound but not complete for weighted Kripke models. Next, we show how to extend the calculus to get completeness for the class of weighted Kripke models. Neighbourhood models for conditional belief are closed under model restriction (public announcement update), while earlier neighbourhood models for belief as `willingness to bet' were not. Therefore the logic we present improves on earlier neighbourhood logics for belief and knowledge. We present complete calculi for public announcement and for publicly revealing the truth value of propositions using reduction axioms. The reductions show that adding these announcement operators to the language does not increase expressive power.

Abstract:We show how belief revision can be treated systematically in the format of dynamicepistemic logic, when operators of conditional belief are added. The core engine consists of definable update rules for changing plausibility relations between worlds, which have been proposed independently in the dynamic-epistemic literature on preference change. Our analysis yields two new types of modal result. First, we obtain complete logics for concrete mechanisms of belief revision, based on compositional reduction axioms. Next, we show how various abstract postulates for belief revision can be analyzed by standard modal frame correspondences for model-changing operations.

Abstract: Dynamic epistemic-doxastic logics describe the new knowledge or new beliefs indexBelief of agents after some informational event has happened. Technically, this requires an update rule that turns a doxastic-epistemic modelM(recording the current information state of the agents) and a dynamic ‘event model’ E (modeling the relevant, possibly complex event taking place right now) into a new model M×E, with in particular new epistemic accessibility and new doxastic plausibility relations. Concrete rules have been proposed for this purpose, and they work well in examples, and generate complete logics. But can such rules be justified in a deeper sense by appealing to underlying considerations? This technical Note proposes a way of thinking about this, by making a connection between belief revision and social choice theory, broadly construed. Our analysis mixes the updates proposed by Baltag & Smets Baltag and Smets (2008) in dynamic epistemic logic with the framework of Andr’eka, Ryan Ȧ Schobbens Andr&eka et al (2002) for merging of binary relations. Reasonable social choice-like postulates turn out to leave very few candidates for update rules. In particular, we show how ‘Priority Update’ for new plausibility relations can be viewed as a process of social choice between the various signals that make up an agent over time. We also discuss how our style of analysis might be extended.
Precision Measurements of Stretching and Compression in Fluid Mixing

Abstract:The mixing of an impurity into a flowing fluid is an important process in many areas of science, including geophysical processes, chemical reactors, and microfluidic devices. In some cases, for example periodic flows, the concepts of nonlinear dynamics provide a deep theoretical basis for understanding mixing. Unfortunately, the building blocks of this theory, i.e. the fixed points and invariant manifolds of the associated Poincare map, have remained inaccessible to direct experimental study, thus limiting the insight that could be obtained. Using precision measurements of tracer particle trajectories in a two-dimensional fluid flow producing chaotic mixing, we directly measure the time-dependent stretching and compression fields. These quantities, previously available only numerically, attain local maxima along lines coinciding with the stable and unstable manifolds, thus revealing the dynamical structures that control mixing. Contours or level sets of a passive impurity field are found to be aligned parallel to the lines of large compression (unstable manifolds) at each instant. This connection appears to persist as the onset of turbulence is approached.

Abstract:Statements not only update our current knowledge, but also have other dynamic effects. In particular, suggestions or commands ‘upgrade' our preferences by changing the current order among worlds. We present a complete logic of knowledge update plus preference upgrade that works with dynamic-epistemic-style reduction axioms. This system can model changing obligations, conflicting commands, or ‘regret'. We then show how to derive reduction axioms from arbitrary definable relation changes. This style of analysis also has a product update version with preferences between actions, as well as worlds. Some illustrations are presented involving defaults and obligations. We conclude that our dynamic framework is viable, while admitting a further extension to more numerical ‘utility update'.

Abstract:This paper is a light walk along interfaces between logic and probability, triggered by a chance encounter with Ed Brinksma. It is not a research paper, or a literature survey, but a pointer to issues. I discuss both direct combinations of logic and probability and structured ways in which logic can be seen as a qualitative version of probability theory. I end by sketching a concrete program for classifying qualitative scenarios that would lend themselves to simple logical reasoning methods, but I also acknowledge a challenge: the ‘unreasonable effective of probability’.

Abstract:Abstract A ‘logical system’ is a complex architecture for analysing one or more styles of reasoning. This paper approaches this notion by example, focussing on current ‘dynamic’ conceptions of logic, as being concerned both with declarative propositions and with cognitive procedures of update, revision, etc. The semantic model proposed for this purpose is a general dynamic logic (inspired by dynamic logic in computer science). We show how this architecture leads to (1) new perspectives on logical constants (essentially, these become invariants in an infinite hierarchy of process simulations), (2) notions of inference (which may be classified via sets of structural rules and corresponding representation theorems) as well as (3) a systematic study of switching mechanisms between static and dynamic levels, effecting a flow of information between short-term and long-term reasoning.

Abstract:In [12], Nilsson proposed the probabilistic logic in which the truth values of logical propositions are probability values between 0 and 1. It is applicable to any logical system for which the consistency of a finite set of propositions can be established. The probabilistic inference scheme reduces to the ordinary logical inference when the probabilities of all propositions are either 0 or 1. This logic has the same limitations of other probabilistic reasoning systems of the Bayesian approach. For common sense reasoning, consistency is not a very natural assumption. We have some well known examples: {Dick is a Quaker, Quakers are pacifists, Republicans are not pacifists, Dick is a Republican}and {Tweety is a bird, birds can fly, Tweety is a penguin}. In this paper, we shall propose some extensions of the probabilistic logic. In the second section, we shall consider the space of all interpretations, consistent or not. In terms of frames of discernment, the basic probability assignment (bpa) and belief function can be defined. Dempster's combination rule is applicable. This extension of probabilistic logic is called the evidential logic in [ 1]. For each proposition s, its belief function is represented by an interval [Spt(s), Pls(s)]. When all such intervals collapse to single points, the evidential logic reduces to probabilistic logic (in the generalized version of not necessarily consistent interpretations). Certainly, we get Nilsson's probabilistic logic by further restricting to consistent interpretations. In the third section, we shall give a probabilistic interpretation of probabilistic logic in terms of multi-dimensional random variables. This interpretation brings the probabilistic logic into the framework of probability theory. Let us consider a finite set S = {sl, s2, ..., Sn) of logical propositions. Each proposition may have true or false values; and may be considered as a random variable. We have a probability distribution for each proposition. The e-dimensional random variable (sl,..., Sn) may take values in the space of all interpretations of 2n binary vectors. We may compute absolute (marginal), conditional and joint probability distributions. It turns out that the permissible probabilistic interpretation vector of Nilsson [12] consists of the joint probabilities of S. Inconsistent interpretations will not appear, by setting their joint probabilities to be zeros. By summing appropriate joint probabilities, we get probabilities of individual propositions or subsets of propositions. Since the Bayes formula and other techniques are valid for e-dimensional random variables, the probabilistic logic is actually very close to the Bayesian inference schemes. In the last section, we shall consider a relaxation scheme for probabilistic logic. In this system, not only new evidences will update the belief measures of a collection of propositions, but also constraint satisfaction among these propositions in the relational network will revise these measures. This mechanism is similar to human reasoning which is an evaluative process converging to the most satisfactory result. The main idea arises from the consistent labeling problem in computer vision. This method is originally applied to scene analysis of line drawings. Later, it is applied to matching, constraint satisfaction and multi sensor fusion by several authors [8], [16] (and see references cited there). Recently, this method is used in knowledge aggregation by Landy and Hummel [9].

Abstract:Over the last couple of decades, there has been a considerable effort devoted to the problem of updating logic programs under the stable model semantics (a.k.a. answer-set programs) or, in other words, the problem of characterising the result of bringing up-to-date a logic program when the world it describes changes. Whereas the state-of-the-art approaches are guided by the same basic intuitions and aspirations as belief updates in the context of classical logic, they build upon fundamentally different principles and methods, which have prevented a unifying framework that could embrace both belief and rule updates. In this paper, we will overview some of the main approaches and results related to answer-set programming updates, while pointing out some of the main challenges that research in this topic has faced.

Abstract:There are two general conceptions on the relationship between probability and logic. In the first, these systems are viewed as complementary—having offsetting strengths and weaknesses—and there exists a fusion of the two that creates a reasoning system that improves upon each. In the second, probability is viewed as an instance of logic, given some sufficiently broad formulation of it, and it is this that should inform the development of more general reasoning systems. These two conceptions are in conflict with each other, where the root issue of contention is the proper abstraction of the concept of logical consequence. In this work, we put forth a proposal on this abstraction based on an extension of the subset relation through the use of projections, which in turn, allows for the formalization of valid inferences to more general settings. Our proposal results in a formalism that encompasses probability and classical logic, and importantly, does so with minimal machinery. This formalism makes assertions about the relationship between these two systems that are explicit, and suggests a path forward in the development of alternatives to them.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a lightweight yet powerful dynamic epistemic logic that captures not only the distinction between de dicto and de re knowledge but also the distinction between de dicto and de re updates. The logic is based on the dynamified version of an epistemic language extended with the assignment operator borrowed from dynamic logic, following the work of Wang and Seligman (Proc. AiML 2018). We obtain complete axiomatizations for the counterparts of public announcement logic and event-model-based DEL based on new reduction axioms taking care of the interactions between dynamics and assignments.

Abstract:This paper argues that a combined treatment of probabilities, time and actions is essential for an appropriate logical account of the notion of probability; and, based on this intuition, describes an expressive probabilistic temporal logic for reasoning about actions with uncertain outcomes. The logic is modal and higher-order: modalities annotated by actions are used to express possibility and necessity of propositions in the next states resulting from the actions, and a higher-order function is needed to express the probability operator. The proposed logic is shown to be an adequate extension of classical mathematical probability theory, and its expressiveness is illustrated through the formalization of the Monty Hall problem.
Foundational Issues in Logical Dynamics.

Abstract:A healthy field combines two driving forces, extension of coverage and theoretical reflection – and modal logic is no exception. In this talk, we look at some broader theoretical issues raised by recent developments in dynamic logics of information flow, whose main technical feature is the modal study of definable model change. Our pilot system will be public announcement logic PAL, the base calculus of update with hard information. We identify several general themes behind the particulars of its design. These include model-theoretic issues like the balance of expressive power for the static and dynamic components of the language, and learnability results in the form of preservation theorems. But we also discuss PAL’s calculus of reasoning, via correspondence analysis of its axioms as constraints on update functions in domains of inquiry, showing how this leads to two recent extensions: protocol versions where no reduction to the static base language occurs, and substitution-closed core versions of the system. Both moves exemplify more general operations on modal logics. Next, we consider other dynamic-epistemic logics, and amplify on the above themes, while adding some new ones. First, we discuss event models and product update in DEL, a calculus of model construction that shows analogies with process algebra, but also with the epistemic μ–calculus. Then we turn to dynamic logics for belief change under incoming hard and soft information that upgrade plausibility relations without eliminating worlds. We discuss what logical format best captures the generality needed to avoid a jungle of revision policies. In this setting also, we look at the general phenomenon of defining new static modalities by dynamic considerations. While all this broadens our view of single-step model transformations, another conspicuous dimension in current research is the global temporal horizon of a process of inquiry, a conversation, or a game, adding procedural information to local updates. We discuss representation results linking local dynamic and global temporal logics, while also pointing at specific model-theoretic issues arising with concrete processes involving iterated hard or soft announcements, and their limit behavior. Here we link up with modal fixed-point logics, though the general situation is far from clear. As a very concrete instance of merging local and global perspectives, we discuss some recent links between dynamic epistemic logics and formal learning theory, where modal models acquire a new meaning as priors pre-encoding learning methods.

Abstract:Early support for reasoning about probabilistic system behaviour replaced nondeterminism with probabilism. Only relatively recently have formalisms been studied that combine the two, and hence facilitate reasoning about probabilistic systems at levels of abstraction more general than code. Such studies have revealed an unsuspected subtlety in the interaction between nondeterministic and probabilistic choices that can be summarised: the demon resolving the nondeterministic choice has memory of previous state changes, whilst the probabilistic choice is made spontaneously. As a result, assignments to distinct variables need no longer commute. This paper introduces a model with explicit control of the length of the demon's memory. It does so by expanding the standard (initial-final) state view of computation to incorporate a third state, the `original' state which checkpoints the most recent nondeterministic choice. That enables a nondeterministic choice to be made on the basis of only certain past probabilistic choices and so facilitates independent nondeterministic combinations to be chosen against just those. Sound laws are presented and used to analyse first an example in which no new behaviour should result, and second one that lies beyond the scope of traditional models.
