Abstract:This paper presents an experiment on computer assisted formal verification of program transformations. The operational semantics of WSL is formalized in the type theoretical proof assistant Coq, which forms the basis, on which the correctness of program transformations can be stated and proved as formula, in Coq. A group of program transformations frequently used for software maintenance have been proved correct. The existence of a machine checked formal verification increases significantly the confidence in the correctness of program transformations, which is crucial for the reliability of software maintenance systems.

Abstract:It is very difficult to construct a correct BPEL engine, which is the runtime environment supporting the execution of BPEL processes. The main reason is the complexity of informal specification. It leads to that the programmers build the system without knowing precisely what they do. In this paper, we provide an operational semantics of BPEL based on Abstract BPEL Machine (ABM). ABM is a formal model that simulates the execution environment of BPEL. The functional behavior of a BPEL engine can be described as the input-output state transitions on ABM. It can be further divided into the execution behavior of each BPEL constructs, such as activities and handlers. The aim of our work is to provide the precise understanding on execution model of BPEL, and narrow the gap between BPEL specification and BPEL implementation. The result can be used as a formal specification to construct a correct BPEL engine.

Abstract:With the increasing need to apply modern software techniques to hardware design, Verilog, the most popular Hardware Description Language (HDL), plays an infrastructure role. However, Verilog has several semantic pitfalls that often confuse software and hardware developers. Although prior research on formal semantics for Verilog exists, it is not comprehensive and has not fully addressed these issues. In this work, we present a novel scheme inspired by previous work on defining core languages for software languages like JavaScript and Python. Specifically, we define the formal semantics of Verilog using a core language called λ V , which captures the essence of Verilog using as few language structures as possible. λ V not only covers the most complete set of language features to date, but also addresses the aforementioned pitfalls. We implemented λ V with about 27,000 lines of Java code, and comprehensively tested its totality and conformance with Verilog. As a reliable reference semantics, λ V can detect semantic bugs in real-world Verilog simulators and expose ambiguities in Verilog’s standard specification. Moreover, as a useful core language, λ V has the potential to facilitate the development of tools such as a state-space explorer and a concolic execution tool for Verilog.

It allows both the software engineers and machines to understand the content of formal models and supports more effective software design in terms of understanding, sharing and reusing in a distributed manner. Abstract:Many universities have courses and projects revolving around compiler or interpreter implementation as part of their degree programmes in computer science. In such teaching activities, tool support can be highly beneficial. While there are already several tools for assisting with development of the front end of compilers, tool support tapers off towards the back end, or requires more background experience than is expected of undergraduate students. Structural operational semantics is a useful and mathematically simple formalism for specifying the behaviour of programs and a specification lends itself well to implementation; in particular big-step or natural semantics is often a useful and simple approach. However, many students struggle with learning the notation and often come up with ill-defined and meaningless attempts at defining a structural operational semantics. A survey shows that students working on programming language projects feel that tool support is lacking and would be useful. Many of these problems encountered when developing a semantic definition are similar to problems encountered in programming, in particular ones that are essentially the result of type errors. We present a pedagogical metalanguage based on natural semantics, and its implementation, as an attempt to marry two notions: a syntax similar to textbook notation for natural semantics on the one hand, and automatic verification of some correctness properties on the other by means of a strong type discipline. The metalanguage and the tool provide the facilities for writing and executing specifications as a form of programming. The user can check that the specification is not meaningless as well as execute programs, if the specification makes sense.

Abstract:This article presents the formal semantics of a large subset of the C language called Clight. Clight includes pointer arithmetic, struct and union types, C loops and structured switch statements. Clight is the source language of the CompCert verified compiler. The formal semantics of Clight is a big-step operational semantics that observes both terminating and diverging executions and produces traces of input/output events. The formal semantics of Clight is mechanized using the Coq proof assistant. In addition to the semantics of Clight, this article describes its integration in the CompCert verified compiler and several ways by which the semantics was validated.

Abstract:Modeling and simulation are now leading the way in supporting analysis and development of system of systems. At present, to support the unified modeling formalism and dynamic simulation for different domain specific models across MBSE process, system modeling languages (such as SysML) are often required to cooperate with multi-physics modeling languages and simulation platforms (such as Modelica, Simulink), which makes it challenging to ensure the true unity of the whole system models, the consistency between the various system layers and the traceability of the modeling and simulation processes. In response to the above problems, this paper develops a new integrated intelligent modeling and simulation language, which can uniformly describe the system-level architecture and physical behavior models as a whole. On this basis, models can be simulated directly to support system verification for MBSE. Compiler and simulation engine are developed to enable X language to support the simulation of continuous, discrete event and agent models. Finally, an intelligent car system is taken as a case to verify the modeling and simulation capabilities of X language.

Abstract:Large language models~(LLMs) demonstrate significant potential to revolutionize software engineering (SE) by exhibiting outstanding performance in SE tasks such as code and document generation. However, the high reliability and risk control requirements in software engineering raise concerns about the lack of interpretability of LLMs. To address this concern, we conducted a study to evaluate the capabilities of LLMs and their limitations for code analysis in SE. We break down the abilities needed for artificial intelligence~(AI) models to address SE tasks related to code analysis into three categories: 1) syntax understanding, 2) static behavior understanding, and 3) dynamic behavior understanding. Our investigation focused on the ability of LLMs to comprehend code syntax and semantic structures, which include abstract syntax trees (AST), control flow graphs (CFG), and call graphs (CG). We employed four state-of-the-art foundational models, GPT4, GPT3.5, StarCoder and CodeLlama-13b-instruct. We assessed the performance of LLMs on cross-language tasks involving C, Java, Python, and Solidity. Our findings revealed that while LLMs have a talent for understanding code syntax, they struggle with comprehending code semantics, particularly dynamic semantics. We conclude that LLMs possess capabilities similar to an Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) parser, demonstrating initial competencies in static code analysis. Furthermore, our study highlights that LLMs are susceptible to hallucinations when interpreting code semantic structures and fabricating nonexistent facts. These results indicate the need to explore methods to verify the correctness of LLM output to ensure its dependability in SE. More importantly, our study provides an initial answer to why the codes generated by LLM are usually syntax-correct but vulnerable.

Denotation-based Compositional Compiler Verification

Abstract:A desired but challenging property of compiler verification is compositionality in the sense that the compilation correctness of a program can be deduced from that of its substructures ranging from statements, functions, and modules incrementally. Previously proposed approaches have devoted extensive effort to module-level compositionality based on small-step semantics and simulation theories. This paper proposes a novel compiler verification framework based on denotational semantics for better compositionality. Specifically, our denotational semantics is defined by semantic functions that map a syntactic component to a semantic domain composed of multiple behavioral \emph{sets}, and compiler correctness is defined by the behavioral refinement between semantic domains of the source and the target programs. Therefore, when proving compiler correctness, we can extensively leverage the algebraic properties of sets. Another important contribution is that our formalization of denotational semantics captures the full meaning of a program and bridges the gap between those based on conventional powerdomains and what realistic compiler verification actually needs. We demonstrate our denotation-based framework viable and practical by applying it to the verification of the front-end of CompCert and showing that the compositionality from the compilation correctness of sub-statements to statements, from functions to modules, and from modules to the whole program (i.e., module-level compositionality) can be achieved similarly.

Abstract:The competition for higher performance/price ratio is pushing processor chip design into the manycore age. Existing multicore technologies such as caching no longer scale up to dozens of processor cores. Even moderate level of performance optimisation requires direct handling of data locality and distribution. Such architectural complexity inevitably introduces challenges to programming. A better approach for abstraction than completely relying on compiler optimization is to expose some performance-critical features of the system and expect the programmer to handle them explicitly. This paper studies an algebra-semantic programming theory for a performance-transparent level of parallel programming of array-based data layout, distribution, transfer and their affinity with threads. The programming model contributes to the simplification of system-level complexities and the answering of crucial engineering questions through rigorous reasoning.

Abstract:Many software engineers have found that it is difficult to understand, incorporate and use different formal models consistently in the process of software developments, especially for large and complex software systems. This is mainly due to the complex mathematical nature of the formal methods and the lack of tool support. It is highly desirable to have software models and their related software artefacts systematically connected and used collaboratively, rather than in isolation. We first propose a methodology with tool support is proposed to automatically derive ontological metadata from formal software models and semantically describe them. We then develop a Semantic Web environment for representing and sharing formal Z/OZ models. A method with prototype tool is presented to enhance semantic query to software models and other artefacts.

Abstract:In the last decade, machine learning based compilation has moved from an an obscure research niche to a mainstream activity. In this article, we describe the relationship between machine learning and compiler optimisation and introduce the main concepts of features, models, training and deployment. We then provide a comprehensive survey and provide a road map for the wide variety of different research areas. We conclude with a discussion on open issues in the area and potential research directions. This paper provides both an accessible introduction to the fast moving area of machine learning based compilation and a detailed bibliography of its main achievements.

Abstract:Traditional code transformation structures, such as abstract syntax trees (ASTs), conteXtual flow graphs (XFGs), and more generally, compiler intermediate representations (IRs), may have limitations in extracting higher-order semantics from code. While work has already begun on higher-order semantics lifting (e.g., Aroma's simplified parse tree (SPT), verified lifting's lambda calculi, and Halide's intentional domain specific language (DSL)), research in this area is still immature. To continue to advance this research, we present the program-derived semantics graph, a new graphical structure to capture semantics of code. The PSG is designed to provide a single structure for capturing program semantics at multiple levels of abstraction. The PSG may be in a class of emerging structural representations that cannot be built from a traditional set of predefined rules and instead must be learned. In this paper, we describe the PSG and its fundamental structural differences compared to state-of-the-art structures. Although our exploration into the PSG is in its infancy, our early results and architectural analysis indicate it is a promising new research direction to automatically extract program semantics.
Fully Composable and Adequate Verified Compilation with Direct Refinements between Open Modules (Technical Report)

Abstract:Verified compilation of open modules (i.e., modules whose functionality depends on other modules) provides a foundation for end-to-end verification of modular programs ubiquitous in contemporary software. However, despite intensive investigation in this topic for decades, the proposed approaches are still difficult to use in practice as they rely on assumptions about the internal working of compilers which make it difficult for external users to apply the verification results. We propose an approach to verified compositional compilation without such assumptions in the setting of verifying compilation of heterogeneous modules written in first-order languages supporting global memory and pointers. Our approach is based on the memory model of CompCert and a new discovery that a Kripke relation with a notion of memory protection can serve as a uniform and composable semantic interface for the compiler passes. By absorbing the rely-guarantee conditions on memory evolution for all compiler passes into this Kripke Memory Relation and by piggybacking requirements on compiler optimizations onto it, we get compositional correctness theorems for realistic optimizing compilers as refinements that directly relate native semantics of open modules and that are ignorant of intermediate compilation processes. Such direct refinements support all the compositionality and adequacy properties essential for verified compilation of open modules. We have applied this approach to the full compilation chain of CompCert with its Clight source language and demonstrated that our compiler correctness theorem is open to composition and intuitive to use with reduced verification complexity through end-to-end verification of non-trivial heterogeneous modules that may freely invoke each other (e.g., mutually recursively).

Abstract:WebAssembly (Wasm) is a low-level bytecode language and virtual machine, intended as a compilation target for a wide range of programming languages, which is seeing increasing adoption across diverse ecosystems. As a young technology, Wasm continues to evolve -- it reached version 2.0 last year and another major update is expected soon. For a new feature to be standardised in Wasm, four key artefacts must be presented: a formal (mathematical) specification of the feature, an accompanying prose pseudocode description, an implementation in the official reference interpreter, and a suite of unit tests. This rigorous process helps to avoid errors in the design and implementation of new Wasm features, and Wasm's distinctive formal specification in particular has facilitated machine-checked proofs of various correctness properties for the language. However, manually crafting all of these artefacts requires expert knowledge combined with repetitive and tedious labor, which is a burden on the language's standardization process and authoring of the specification. This paper presents Wasm SpecTec, a technology to express the formal specification of Wasm through a domain-specific language. This DSL allows all of Wasm's currently handwritten specification artefacts to be error-checked and generated automatically from a single source of truth, and is designed to be easy to write, read, compare, and review. We believe that Wasm SpecTec's automation and meta-level error checking will significantly ease the current burden of the language's specification authors. We demonstrate the current capabilities of Wasm SpecTec by showcasing its proficiency in generating various artefacts, and describe our work towards replacing the manually written official Wasm specification document with specifications generated by Wasm SpecTec.

An operation semantics exchange model is proposed to illustrate how operation semantics can be used to support distributed product design. The key issues involved in the model are also discussed, such as the operation semantics generation process, operation semantics retrieval methods and operation semantics representation by XML. A prototype system based on this model is developed to demonstrate collaborative process.

Abstract:For the object oriented (OO) world, developing formal semantics for theoretical study and practical use is still an important topic despite of a decade's efforts. In this paper, for a sufficiently large subset of sequential Java with a pure reference semantics model, we define a Weakest Precondition (WP) semantics, and prove its soundness and completeness. Based on thisWP semantics, we study specifications of methods and the refinement relationship between specifications, and we propose new definitions for object invariants and behavioral subtyping notation for general OO programs.
