Abstract:We consider opportunistic scheduling in a downlink OFDMA system to support heterogeneous services. Given the user's queue state information (QSI) and channel state information (CSI), the proposed sum waiting time based scheduling (SWBS) algorithm can guarantee QoS requirements for both real-time (RT) and non-real-time (NRT) service. The benefit is attained from scheduling heterogeneous services based on sum packet waiting time to fulfill the QoS requirements and exploiting multiuser diversity to achieve effective resource utilization. Simulation results illustrate that the max packet loss ratio and packet delay for real-time service and the throughput for non-real-time service are improved by the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:: Job scheduling and resource allocation are the key factors which affect the performance of parallel and distributed systems. This paper first analyzed several common used job scheduling models in large and distributed environment. Since the main purpose of cloud computing is to provide “low-cost” and “on-demand” services, this paper introduced a novel two-level based cloud scheduling model. In our model, job scheduling in the cloud is divided into User Scheduling and Task Scheduling which were designed to implement different scheduling strategies. In the User Scheduling level, it applies the distribution justice theory in the sociology area to achieve the highest average user fairness. While in Task Scheduling level, it applies adaptive strategies to achieve the binding of micro tasks and the virtual machines according to different objectives of tasks. The new model redefined the messaging mechanism between main cloud entities and a new advertising mode was introduced for cloud providers to promote their services. The results of emulation experiments show that compared to traditional algorithms the proposed model can guarantee the user expectations and the relative fairness of the services on the basis of high overall efficiency of cloud systems.

Abstract:Heterogeneous systems become popular in both client and cloud. A parallel program can incur operations on multiple processing resources such as CPU, GPU, and vector processor units. This paper investigates scheduling problems on functionally heterogeneous systems with the objective of minimizing the completion time of parallel jobs. We first present performance bounds of online scheduling and show that any online algorithm is at best around (K + 1)-competitive with respect to job completion time, where K is the total number of resource types. There exist "bad" jobs that prevent any online algorithms from obtaining good interleaving of heterogeneous tasks. This lower bound suggests that the relative performance of online algorithms versus an offline optimal could degrade linearly as types of heterogeneous resources increase. The limitation of online scheduling motivates our study of how additional offline or look ahead information can help improve scheduling performance. We propose a Multi-Queue Balancing algorithm (MQB) that effectively transforms the problem of minimizing completion time to one of maximizing utilization of heterogeneous resources. It promotes interleaving of heterogeneous tasks through balancing the task queues of different types. Our simulation results suggest that MQB reduces the execution time of online greedy algorithms up to 40\% over various workloads and outperforms other offline schemes in most cases. Furthermore, MQB can use limited and approximated offline information to improve scheduling decisions.

Abstract:A new task scheduling algorithm was proposed on a new parallel system model,which took communication contention into account: at any time,a processor could,at most,receive and send only one message.The algorithm consists of two phases,a listing phase which is quite effective for heterogeneous environments and a task duplication based processor assignment phase.The experimental work based on randomly generated task graph and a real world applications' task graph shows that the proposed algorithm provides substantial improvement over existing work on the communication contention aware model.

To sup- port codesign of feedback control and real-time scheduling under overload conditions, a direct feedback scheduling approach is proposed. The goal is to optimize the overall system perform- ance through dynamically allocating limited CPU time based on control requirements. A con- trol application oriented task model is suggested, providing an interface between control per- formance and task scheduling decision. Based on this model, a novel scheduling algorithm intended for control tasks is presented. The overload condition is effectively handled using a job skipping scheme. Abstract:The case where multiple control tasks share one embedded CPU is considered. For various reasons, both execution times of these tasks and CPU workload are uncertain and imprecise. To attack this issue, a fuzzy logic based feedback scheduling approach is suggested. The sampling periods of control tasks are periodically adjusted with respect to uncertain resource availability. A simple period rescaling algorithm is employed, and the available CPU resource is dynamically allocated in an intelligent fashion. Thanks to the inherent capacity of fuzzy logic to formalize control algorithms that can tolerate imprecision and uncertainty, the proposed approach provides runtime flexibility to quality of control (QoC) management. Preliminary simulations highlight the benefits of the fuzzy logic based feedback scheduler.

Abstract:In ubiquitous computing environments, intelligent devices may have multiple network connections. It is usually left to applications to choose suitable network connections. The applications must face the problem of adapting to the dynamic network environments, they have to select the most suitable network, switch to another one when the current one couldn't work anymore, re-establishment failed connections, etc. Although some systems and middle wares are brought forward to solve these problems, they can only solve part of them. In this paper, a novel approach is proposed to make the network-scheduling operation as fundamental part of the OS. In that OS, new network programming interface is provided, and users could use abstract network interface or a special one. Like task-scheduling, the new OS will switch among networks instead of applications when necessary and the switching operation is almost transparent. This paper also presents the design and implementation of the architecture.

Abstract:Heterogeneous high-performance computing (HPC) systems have been proposed as a power efficient alternative to traditional homogeneous systems. In heterogeneous HPC system, fast CPUs which have complex pipelines, high clock frequencies as well as high power consumption are combined with slow ones which have simple pipelines, low clock frequencies as well as low power consumption. Different types of applications should be distributed to run on different type of CPUs, in order to achieve a trade-off between energy and performance. In this paper, we use experimental research to investigate the applications classifications which categorize each application as the CPU-intensive, memory-intensive, or phase-change application. We also conduct some experiments to measure the current, power, and energy of different types of applications. Afterwards, a scheduling method for applications on heterogeneous HPC systems is proposed. The experiment shows that the scheduling method can trade off the latency and energy consumption based on the applications classification and measurement.

In the proposed algorithm, BOA constructs and updates Bayesian network according to the task graph of scheduling problems to find the optimal solution assigning tasks to different processors, and the execution sequence of tasks on the same processor is set by the heuristic used in the list scheduling approach. The proposed algorithm is sufficiently evaluated and compared with the related approaches by means of the empirical studies on benchmark applications. The experimental results confirm that the proposed algorithm is able to deliver more efficient schedules. Further experiments also indicate that the proposed algorithm maintains almost the same performance with different parameter settings.

This paper presents a novel scheduling algorithm based on learning classifier system for heterogeneous computing environment. In the presented algorithm, XCS classifier system is used to find the optimal task assignment on different processors, and the execution sequence of tasks on the same processor is set by the heuristic used in list scheduling approach. Empirical studies on benchmark task graphs show that the proposed algorithm is able to produce higher speedup compared with the related algorithms. Further experiments also indicate that the proposed algorithm maintains almost the same performance with different parameter settings.

Abstract:Efficient application scheduling algorithms are important to obtain high performance in heterogeneous computing systems. However, most of current algorithms are of low efficiency in scheduling. Aiming at this problem, we propose a heterogeneous scheduling algorithm with improved task priority (HSIP) whose functionality relies on two pillars: 1) a task priority strategy based on standard deviation and Communication Cost Weight to make scheduling priority more efficient, 2) an entry task duplication selection policy to make the makespan shorter and improve the idle time slot insertion-based. We evaluate our proposed scheme on some real application DAGs by comparison with Predict Earliest Finish Time (PEFT), SD-Based Algorithm for Task Scheduling (SDBATS), Heterogeneous Earliest Finish Time (HEFT) and Critical Path On a Processor (CPOP). Experimental results show that our proposed scheme performs better than other algorithms in terms of schedule length ratio, speedup and efficiency.

Abstract:Efficient job scheduling for heterogeneous computing environments has attracted widespread attention, jobs are usually modeled as directed acyclic graphs(DAG). Optimizing scheduling can improve system throughput. We propose a two-stage scheduling algorithm, which calculates task selection and processor allocation respectively. In task selection stage, we utilize a bidirectional graph convolution network to learn DAG structural features, and a fully-connected network to generate proper scheduling scheme. In the processor allocation stage, we propose a heuristic based on optimistic cost table(OCT) and task duplication, which trade-off scheduling allocation better. Experiments of various scheduling scenarios have been conducted, and the results show that the proposed algorithm has better scheduling performance than the compared heterogeneous DAG scheduling algorithms.

Abstract:Efficient task scheduling has always been one of the most critical issues for high performance in heterogeneous computing. The heterogeneity of computation costs on a given set of processors and the communication costs among processors increase the complexity of the scheduling problem. Generally, the application consists of several tasks with dependencies. If the computation costs, task dependencies and communication costs are known a priori, the application can be represented by a static model, namely the directed acyclic graphs (DAG) model. In this paper, we proposed a novel task scheduling algorithm called penalty value based task scheduling (PVBTS) for application scheduling problem. The PVBTS algorithm dynamically determines the execution order of tasks according to the penalty value which is computed based on the heterogeneity of execution completion time on a given set of processors. In each step, the PVBTS algorithm maintains a ready list including all the independent tasks, then selects the task with the highest penalty value and maps it to a processor that gives the minimum execution completion time of the task. The PVBTS algorithm uses randomly generated task graphs and some real-world application task graphs to evaluate performance. The experimental results indicate that the PVBTS algorithm outperforms some well-known scheduling algorithms selected for the performance comparison in terms of schedule length (makespan) and efficiency.

Abstract:In recent years, cloud computing has become an ideal way to provide different types of applications. It can provide the processing, storage, web services, development platforms, and databases to enable the companies to scale their infrastructure and service types quickly. As the demand for higher processing power increases, large amounts of data will cause a significant burden on the cloud computing environment. Therefore, an efficient scheduling algorithm for tasks under the cloud computing environment has become a crucial issue. Some well-known algorithms such as Suffrage, MaxSuffrage, and AMS have been proposed to improve the scheduling performance. However, the above algorithms do not consider the load balancing problem of working nodes. This load balancing issue will limit the overall performance of the network system. Hence, the BCSV scheduling algorithm has been proposed to improve the above problems in this paper. The main idea of BCSV is to use the Smallest Suffrage Value (SSV), Largest Suffrage Value (LSV), and Criteria Suffrage Value (CSV) as the scheduling factor to enhance the performance of the task dispatch. According to the experiment results, the proposed BCSV algorithm can obtain better load balance and makespan than the existed algorithms under the HiHi, HiLo, LoHi, and LoLo heterogeneous network environment. In other words, the proposed BCSV algorithm can get better task scheduling results while considering the load balancing problem.

Abstract:Efficient scheduling algorithms have been a leading research topic for heterogeneous computing systems. Although duplication-based scheduling algorithms can significantly reduce the total completion time, they are generally accompanied by an exorbitant time complexity. In this paper, we propose a new task duplication-based heuristic scheduling algorithm, LDLS, that can reduce the total completion time and maintains a low time complexity. The scheduling procedure of LDLS is composed of three main phases: In the beginning phase, the maximum number of duplications per level and per task is calculated to prevent excessive duplications from blocking regular tasks. In the next phase, the optimistic cost table (OCT) and ranking of tasks are calculated with reference to PEFT. In the final phase, scheduling is conducted based on the ranking, and the duplication of each task is dynamically determined, enabling the duplicated tasks to effectively reduce the start execution time of its successor tasks. Experiments of algorithms on randomly generated graphs and real-world applications indicate that both the scheduling length and the number of better case occurrences of LDLS are better than others.

Abstract:The task scheduling is an important issue in the research of parallel computing in cluster of workstations. To keep load balance, the method for task allocation and reallocation was proposed, which is the low expensive method of task scheduling. The execution mechanism of inert task was adopted. To avoid the process migration in task reallocation, the task's real start-time was deferred as best as one can. The algorithm and implementation of the task allocation are presented. The results of analysis and experiments have shown that the method can improve the performance of parallel computing.

Abstract:Heterogeneous computing environments have been widely used in real-time embedded systems. Efficient task scheduling is essential for achieving high performance in the synthesis of embedded systems. The problem has been proved to be NP-complete and mainly heuristic algorithms which often have room for improvement exist. In this paper, an algorithm called the dynamic BLevel first (DBLF) has been presented. The DBLF algorithm selects the ready task with a maximum Blevel (ni) at each step and assigns the selected task to a processor in an insertion mode. The task is assigned to the suitable processor that satisfies the precedence sequence and has the minimum earliest-finish-time (EFT) of the task. Abstract:In heterogeneous computing systems, excellent task scheduling algorithms can shorten the task completion time and improve system parallelism. With the large-scale deployment of edge computing, the task scheduling algorithm in heterogeneous edge computing servers has become a critical factor in improving the overall system performance. This paper proposes a new task scheduling algorithm called the edge cover scheduling algorithm(ECSA), which schedules tasks based on the edge cover queue of the directed acyclic graph(DAG) for heterogeneous computing systems. Based on the estimation of distribution algorithm(EDA) and the graph random walk algorithm, the ECSA generates an edge cover queue from DAG. Then, the ECSA uses the heuristics greedy method with low time and computational complexity to allocate the edge cover queue to processors. Theoretical analysis and simulation results on random DAGs and real-world DAGs show that the ECSA can achieve better scheduling results in terms of makespan, the schedule length ratio(SLR), efficiency, and frequency of best results with low time and computational complexity.
