Abstract:We consider the robot exploration problem of graph maps with homogeneous markers. The graph consists of nodes and edges, where the robot can navigate from one node to another through an edge connecting these two nodes. However, the robot may not distinguish one node (or edge) from another in the unknown graph. All the nodes (edges) look the same. However, at each node, the robot can observe a consistent local relative orientation of its incident edges, that is, a cyclic order of edges incident to the node. To assist the robot's task of mapping the environment, it can put homogeneous marks on nodes or edges which can be recognized later. The total number of edges traversed when constructing a map of the graph is often used as a performance measure for robot strategies. However, since the graph is unknown, a strategy may be efficient in one situation but not in others. Thus, there is a conceptual question about what is an optimal strategy. In this paper, we apply the competitive analysis method for robot explorations. In particular, we compare the cost for constructing a map with the cost for verifying the same map; their ratio is the competitive ratio. A strategy is optimal if it minimizes the worst-case ratio of the total number of edges traversed when constructing a map of the graph to the optimum number of edges traversed in verifying the correctness of a given map of the same graph. If this competitive ratio is bounded above by a constant, we say the strategy is competitive

Abstract:This paper presents an approach to using noisy and incomplete depth-camera datasets to detect reliable surface features for use in map construction for a caterpillar-inspired climbing robot. The approach uses a combination of plane extraction, clustering and template matching techniques to infer from the restricted dataset a usable map. This approach has been tested in both laboratory and real-world steel bridge tunnel datasets generated by a climbing robot, with the results showing that the generated maps are accurate enough for use in localisation and step trajectory planning.

Abstract:Exploring unknown environment and creating an accurate map is one of the most important capabilities for a autonomous robot. For a robot to efficiently explore unknown environment, it needs to make optimal decisions to select a proper direction to goals and create waypoints to guide the robot to move towards goals based on gathering information about the environments. This work aims to develop an effective exploration approach for a low-cost mobile robot. We proposed a multi-mode exploration strategy for a robot to work in different scenarios like corridors, rooms, tunnels, open spaces etc. Our approach considers the exploration planning hierarchically-global targets and local targets (also named frontier points) to reduce the cost and improve efficiency. The directions to global targets are restricted by virtual grids and sequenced waypoints of subspace. The local planning is maintained with frontier exploration and sample based planning methods. The planner also obtain the semantic information about environments and obstacles for mapping strategy. Our approach follows the divide-and-conquer thought which makes it possible for autonomous mobile robots to perform exploration effectively with limited computing resource such as tiny modular robots or swarm robots.

Abstract:Map exploration is a fundamental problem in mobile robots. This paper presents a distributed algorithm that coordinates a team of autonomous mobile robots to explore an unknown environment. The proposed strategy is based on frontiers which are the regions on the boundary between open and unexplored space. With this strategy, robots are guided to move constantly to the nearest frontier to reduce the size of unknown region. Based on the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) model incorporated in the algorithm, robots are navigated towards remote frontier after exploring the local area. The exploration completes when there is no frontier cell in the environment. The experiments implemented on both simulated and real robot scenarios show that the proposed algorithm is capable of completing the exploration task. Compared to the conventional method of randomly selecting frontier, the proposed algorithm proves its efficiency by the decreased 60% exploration time at least. Additional experimental results show the decreased coverage time when the number of robots increases, which further suggests the validity, efficiency and scalability.

Abstract:We are interested in the problem of map construction of an unknown environment. Even with a complete map, navigation of real autonomous mobile robots is still conducted with imperfect information. This can be caused by various factors, such as imperfect sensors, imperfect mechanical control capabilities, and imperfect road conditions. Computational resource constraints for real time performance may also prevent us from collecting and processing complete information about the environment. A major problem caused by these issues is that accummulated errors in the robot’s self-localization may become arbitrarily large as the robot moves on. Therefore, in addition to the map, we would still need a strategy to help robots recognize the environment along the way and to guide movements toward the destination. This is called the guidance problem by Levitt and Lawton (Levitt & Lawton 1990). We discuss an approach for the guidance problem using imprecise data, in the context of world models that are represented by maps with qualitative/topological information for the global environment, and quantitative/geometric information for the local environment, as suggested by Levitt and Lawton (Levitt & Lawton 1990), Kuipers and Levitt (Kuipers & Levitt 1988). We allow the robot to be equipped with a constant number of sensors. We consider three cost measures: mechanical, sensing, and computation in decreasing order of importance. We propose a number of algorithms with their associated cost measures using a veriety of sensor/measurement devices.

Abstract:Mobile robots have been used to explore novel environments and build useful maps for navigation. Although sensor-based random tree techniques have been used extensively for exploration, they are not efficient for time-critical applications since the robot may visit the same place more than once during backtracking. In this paper, a novel, simple yet effective heuristic backtracking algorithm is proposed to reduce the exploration time and distance travelled. The new algorithm is based on the selection of the most informative node to approach during backtracking. A new environmental complexity metric is developed to evaluate the exploration complexity of different structured environments and thus enable a fair comparison between exploration techniques. An evaluation index is also developed to encapsulate the total performance of an exploration technique in a single number for the comparison of techniques. The developed backtracking algorithm is tested through computer simulations for several structured environments to verify its effectiveness using the developed complexity metric and the evaluation index. The results confirmed significant performance improvement using the proposed algorithm. The new evaluation index is also shown to be representative of the performance and to facilitate comparisons.

Asymmetric Information Enhanced Mapping Framework for Multirobot Exploration based on Deep Reinforcement Learning

Abstract:Despite the great development of multirobot technologies, efficiently and collaboratively exploring an unknown environment is still a big challenge. In this paper, we propose AIM-Mapping, a Asymmetric InforMation Enhanced Mapping framework. The framework fully utilizes the privilege information in the training process to help construct the environment representation as well as the supervised signal in an asymmetric actor-critic training framework. Specifically, privilege information is used to evaluate the exploration performance through an asymmetric feature representation module and a mutual information evaluation module. The decision-making network uses the trained feature encoder to extract structure information from the environment and combines it with a topological map constructed based on geometric distance. Utilizing this kind of topological map representation, we employ topological graph matching to assign corresponding boundary points to each robot as long-term goal points. We conduct experiments in real-world-like scenarios using the Gibson simulation environments. It validates that the proposed method, when compared to existing methods, achieves great performance improvement.

Robotic Exploration through Semantic Topometric Mapping

Abstract:In this article, we introduce a novel strategy for robotic exploration in unknown environments using a semantic topometric map. As it will be presented, the semantic topometric map is generated by segmenting the grid map of the currently explored parts of the environment into regions, such as intersections, pathways, dead-ends, and unexplored frontiers, which constitute the structural semantics of an environment. The proposed exploration strategy leverages metric information of the frontier, such as distance and angle to the frontier, similar to existing frameworks, with the key difference being the additional utilization of structural semantic information, such as properties of the intersections leading to frontiers. The algorithm for generating semantic topometric mapping utilized by the proposed method is lightweight, resulting in the method's online execution being both rapid and computationally efficient. Moreover, the proposed framework can be applied to both structured and unstructured indoor and outdoor environments, which enhances the versatility of the proposed exploration algorithm. We validate our exploration strategy and demonstrate the utility of structural semantics in exploration in two complex indoor environments by utilizing a Turtlebot3 as the robotic agent. Compared to traditional frontier-based methods, our findings indicate that the proposed approach leads to faster exploration and requires less computation time.

Abstract:This work presents a novel approach to autonomous decentralized multi-robot frontier exploration and mapping of an unknown area. A mobile robot team simultaneously explores the environment, discovers frontier points (points on the border between explored and unexplored space), and shares information in order to become dispersed throughout the environment. During the exploration, information exchanged between the mobile robots is limited to data containing mobile robot positions and current mobile robot target points. The main goal of the approach is to allocate the mobile robots to target frontier points in a way which minimizes the overall exploration time. Moreover, a mobile robot team at the same time creates a common map of the environment. The proposed strategy has been implemented in a simulation environment and compared with a state-of-the-art exploration strategy. Simulation results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed decentralized multi-robot strategy.

Abstract:Efficient exploration of unknown environments is a fundamental problem in mobile robotics. We propose a novel topological map whose nodes are represented with the range finder's free beams together with the visual scale-invariant features. The topological map enables teams of robots to efficiently explore environments from different, unknown locations without knowing their initial poses, relative poses and global poses in a certain world reference frame. The experiments of map merging and coordinated exploration demonstrate the proposed map is not only easy for merging, but also convenient for robust and efficient explorations in unknown environments.

Abstract:Human navigation in built environments depends on symbolic spatial information which has unrealised potential to enhance robot navigation capabilities. Information sources such as labels, signs, maps, planners, spoken directions, and navigational gestures communicate a wealth of spatial information to the navigators of built environments; a wealth of information that robots typically ignore. We present a robot navigation system that uses the same symbolic spatial information employed by humans to purposefully navigate in unseen built environments with a level of performance comparable to humans. The navigation system uses a novel data structure called the abstract map to imagine malleable spatial models for unseen spaces from spatial symbols. Sensorimotor perceptions from a robot are then employed to provide purposeful navigation to symbolic goal locations in the unseen environment. We show how a dynamic system can be used to create malleable spatial models for the abstract map, and provide an open source implementation to encourage future work in the area of symbolic navigation. Symbolic navigation performance of humans and a robot is evaluated in a real-world built environment. The paper concludes with a qualitative analysis of human navigation strategies, providing further insights into how the symbolic navigation capabilities of robots in unseen built environments can be improved in the future.

Abstract:Autonomous robot exploration has received widespread attention as a crucial step in constructing maps for unknown environments. Among the research results in the field of robotic exploration, the boundary exploration algorithm based on rapidly exploring random tree (RRT) performs well in most scenarios, which guides the robot motion by taking the frontier with the maximum revenue value as the target point discretely. However, this discrete target selection scheme ignores the geometric continuity of the environment, and the robot often turns to another area before completing a geometrically continuous area (e.g., a complete room), which results in the disorderly motion of the robot and a relatively low exploration efficiency. This work proposes a heuristics biased sampling-based robot exploration strategy, which utilizes the semantic information of the environment as the heuristics to guide the robot exploration. First, a lightweight network model is proposed for heuristic object recognition. Second, a geometrically continuous region is estimated based on the heuristic object, and frontiers are then extracted in this region by using a biased sampling method. Finally, the heuristic information gain model is designed to determine the target frontier for the exploration, which instructs the robot to select the frontiers in the heuristic region with a higher priority. In this way, the robot can effectively use the heuristic knowledge of the environment to improve the efficiency of exploration. Compared with the RRT-based exploration methods in simulations and real-world environmental studies, and the experimental results prove the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:In this article, an effective solution is presented for efficient robotic object search by leveraging metric-topological map. Based on the reference of objects, we construct a novel metric-topological map that is particularly suitable for object search, where the topological nodes represent the object-related locations in the environment. To effectively determine the creation of nodes on the map, a rapid adjustment method of the robot viewing angle is introduced. Compared with traditional maps, the map built in this article not only removes redundant nodes irrelevant to objects, but also facilitates the mobile robot to locate the target object. Besides, inspired by human search behavior, a search strategy is proposed by considering the tradeoff between the current position of the robot and the distance from the robot to the promising location of finding the target object, in order to further improve the search efficiency. The effectiveness and efficiency of our solution are verified through comparative experiments in both simulation and real-world environments. Results show that the presented approach always allows the mobile robot to find the target object efficiently and reliably while achieving humanlike search behavior.

Characterizing the Complexity of Social Robot Navigation Scenarios

Abstract:Social robot navigation algorithms are often demonstrated in overly simplified scenarios, prohibiting the extraction of practical insights about their relevance to real world domains. Our key insight is that an understanding of the inherent complexity of a social robot navigation scenario could help characterize the limitations of existing navigation algorithms and provide actionable directions for improvement. Through an exploration of recent literature, we identify a series of factors contributing to the complexity of a scenario, disambiguating between contextual and robot-related ones. We then conduct a simulation study investigating how manipulations of contextual factors impact the performance of a variety of navigation algorithms. We find that dense and narrow environments correlate most strongly with performance drops, while the heterogeneity of agent policies and directionality of interactions have a less pronounced effect. This motivates a shift towards developing and testing algorithms under higher-complexity settings.

Abstract:We study the problem of multi-robot active mapping, which aims for complete scene map construction in minimum time steps. The key to this problem lies in the goal position estimation to enable more efficient robot movements. Previous approaches either choose the frontier as the goal position via a myopic solution that hinders the time efficiency, or maximize the long-term value via reinforcement learning to directly regress the goal position, but does not guarantee the complete map construction. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm, namely NeuralCoMapping, which takes advantage of both approaches. We reduce the problem to bipartite graph matching, which establishes the node correspondences between two graphs, denoting robots and frontiers. We introduce a multiplex graph neural network (mGNN) that learns the neural distance to fill the affinity matrix for more effective graph matching. We optimize the mGNN with a differentiable linear assignment layer by maximizing the long-term values that favor time efficiency and map completeness via reinforcement learning. We compare our algorithm with several state-of-the-art multi-robot active mapping approaches and adapted reinforcement-learning baselines. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance and exceptional generalization ability of our algorithm on various indoor scenes and unseen number of robots, when only trained with 9 indoor scenes.

Abstract:Multi-robot exploration in unknown environments is a fundamental task for a multi-robot system, involving inter-robot communication through messages among the robots. However, in a restricted communication environment, the limited communication resources become the system's bottleneck due to a large amount of data in the occupancy grid map. Hence, to enhance multi-agent exploration in communication-constrained environments, this letter develops a method to build topological maps while the robot moves in the environment and an exploration strategy based on the created topological map. The latter map comprises a set of vertices and edges connecting the vertices, where each vertex represents a specific area embedded with a descriptor extracted by visually observing this area and recognizing it utilizing descriptors. Each robot has its local grid map stored for path planning, not shared between them. Considering the exploration task, a robot's ability to choose a proper direction depends on the other robot's locations and the unexplored areas. Our exploration framework is evaluated on the Gazebo simulator and real robots, increasing the exploration efficiency by 23% $\sim$ 77%. Compared with the occupancy grid map scheme, our method's data transfer is reduced by 84% $\sim$ 90%.
Active Semantic Mapping and Pose Graph Spectral Analysis for Robot Exploration

Abstract:Exploration in unknown and unstructured environments is a pivotal requirement for robotic applications. A robot's exploration behavior can be inherently affected by the performance of its Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) subsystem, although SLAM and exploration are generally studied separately. In this paper, we formulate exploration as an active mapping problem and extend it with semantic information. We introduce a novel active metric-semantic SLAM approach, leveraging recent research advances in information theory and spectral graph theory: we combine semantic mutual information and the connectivity metrics of the underlying pose graph of the SLAM subsystem. We use the resulting utility function to evaluate different trajectories to select the most favorable strategy during exploration. Exploration and SLAM metrics are analyzed in experiments. Running our algorithm on the Habitat dataset, we show that, while maintaining efficiency close to the state-of-the-art exploration methods, our approach effectively increases the performance of metric-semantic SLAM with a 21% reduction in average map error and a 9% improvement in average semantic classification accuracy.

Abstract:The key problem of multi-robot exploration in unknown environment is how to appropriately select targets for the robots. In this paper, we present a new method to guide multi-robot exploration. Ant colony optimisation (ACO) is introduced to find the optimal target assignment for the robots. A new cost function is designed which takes into account distance, target position and robot density. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed method effectively solves the problem of optimal target assignment and exploration efficiency is much increased.
