Abstract:Workkows advance information systems implementation models by allowing variously the speciication of triggering (control ow) dependencies between business processes including sequence, repetition, decision, parallelism and synchronisation; messaging (data ow) dependencies; and access to a set of distributed and heterogeneous applications and databases. Real-world business processing, however, requires more sophisticated forms of these functionalities, for instance, time dependencies and complex decision handling, e.g. decision networks, in execution triggers; access and update of message content, and asyn-chronous as well as synchronous modes of messaging; access to a number of workkows, possibly multi-organisational. Furthermore, any automation of business processing is partial without the speciication of exception handling, in particular that related to recovery management. This paper amalgamates these issues into a general treatment for workkow speciications at the conceptual level. Using a previously identiied set of modelling suit-ability principles together with an empirical insight gained from a real-world case study of a \long-lived" operational business transaction, we propose an integrated kernel of techniques. Data, process and service perspectives are provided.
