Abstract:The purpose of this note is to show that, if n1, . . . , n(k) are positive integers, and for each d is-an-element-of Z+ satisfying f(d) less-than-or-equal-to k - 2 or a weaker condition d less-than-or-equal-to 2k-2 (where f(d) = SIGMA(i=1)r alpha(i)(p(i) - 1) if PI(i=1)r p(i)alpha-i is the prime factorization of d), the number of pairs {i, j} (1 less-than-or-equal-to i < j less-than-or-equal-to k) with gcd (n(i), n(j)) = d is less than square-root(d + 7)/8, then there exist integers a1, . . . , a(k) such that the residue classes a1(mod n1), . . . , a(k)(mod n(k)) are pairwise disjoint. We conjecture that square-root(d + 7)/8 can be replaced by 2d - 1.
