Abstract:Polariton electric fields and dispersion relations of some important complex-basis superlattices have been derived by means of electromagnetic theory and the Bloch's theorem. The spatial distribution of the polariton electric fields shows an interesting physical picture: the polaritons are mainly bulk modes as the wavenumber k is small and become typical interface modes with very strong peak intensities as k increases.

Abstract:As a geometric property that cannot overlap with its mirror image, chirality is becoming more and more common in electronic structures. The recent discovery of chiral topological polar structures in artificial ferroelectric superlattices is not only of scientific importance but also holds promise for application in tunable frequency oscillators. Although the tubular chiral polarization vortex has been observed in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices, the conditions for its stability remain elusive. Here, we construct a temperature-strain phase diagram for the (PbTiO3)(10)/(SrTiO3)(10) superlattices by using phase field simulation in which four domain states exist at different temperatures and misfit strains. It is found that the chiral polarization vortex appears only in a small range of misfit strain, elucidating the absence of chirality in most ferroelectric superlattices. The chiral polarization vortex is an intermediate state between the ordinary achiral polarization vortex and the mixed domain structure. In addition, by changing strain or temperature, chiral vortices can be reversibly transformed into achiral vortices, demonstrating its tunability. The present work provides theoretical guidance for creating the chiral vortex in ferroelectric superlattices. Published under an exclusive license by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:The dispersion relation of phonon polariton modes is discussed in detail in quantum well superlattices (QWSLs) and quantum well wire superlattices (QWWSLs) with square cross sections. Four (not two) branches of phonon polariton modes are obtained in QWSLs and QWWSLs. The physical pictures of phonon polariton modes propagating in a QWSL are also given and discussed.

Abstract: Topological polar vortices that are the electric analogues of magnetic objects, present great potential in applications of future nanoelectronics due to their nanometer size, anomalous dielectric response, and chirality. To enable the functionalities, it is prerequisite to manipulate the polar states and chirality by using external stimuli. Here, we probe the evolutions of polar state and chirality of polar vortices in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices under electric field by using atomically resolved in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy and phase-field simulations. We find that the adjacent clockwise and counterclockwise vortex usually have opposite chirality. The phase-field simulations suggest that the rotation reversal or axial polarization switching can lead to the chirality change. Guided by which, we experimentally validate that the vortex rotation direction can be changed by applying and subsequently removing of electric fields, offering a potential strategy to manipulate the vortex chirality. The revealed details of dynamic behavior for individual polar vortices at atomic scale and the proposed strategy for chirality manipulation provide fundamentals for future device applications.
Interface Optical-Phonon Modes in a Four-Layer Heterostructure of Polar Crystals.

Abstract:The equations of motion for the p-polarization field in a four-layer heterostructure (FLHS) of polar crystals are solved exactly for the interface optical-phonon modes. The eigenvectors and the interface charge densities are obtained explicitly. The dispersion relations and their plots for a FLHS and its special cases, an asymmetric trilayer heterostructure (asymmetric single quantum well) and a step quantum well, are given and discussed. We find that there are six (not eight) frequency solutions for the interface optical-phonon modes in a FLHS and that, in the long-wavelength limit, the longitudinal and transverse modes in the two side materials 1 and 4 with frequencies (omega(L1), omega(L4), omega(T1), and omega(T4)) are forbidden (the four-layer structure comprises layers 1-4); two frequency solutions are obtained in their stead. These results are due to the asymmetry of the structure. Moreover, we also find that the situation in an asymmetric trilayer heterostructure is similar to that of a FLHS. This work can be regarded as a generalization of the formalism of Chen, Lin, and George [Phys. Rev. B 41, 1435 (1990)].

Abstract:Nontrivial topological structures offer a rich playground in condensed matters and promise alternative device configurations for post-Moore electronics. While recently a number of polar topologies have been discovered in confined ferroelectric PbTiO3 within artificially engineered PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices, little attention was paid to possible topological polar structures in SrTiO3. Here we successfully create previously unrealized polar antivortices within the SrTiO3 of PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices, accomplished by carefully engineering their thicknesses guided by phase-field simulation. Field- and thermal-induced Kosterlitz-Thouless-like topological phase transitions have also been demonstrated, and it was discovered that the driving force for antivortex formation is electrostatic instead of elastic. This work completes an important missing link in polar topologies, expands the reaches of topological structures, and offers insight into searching and manipulating polar textures.

We find that, under electric field, the chiral vortex cores can be moved laterally to form close-pair structures, transform into a /c domain stripes, and finally become a nonchiral c-domain. Such transition is reversible and spontaneous after bias removal. Interestingly, during switching and back-switching events, the vortex rotation can be changed, offering a potential strategy to manipulate vortex chirality. The revealed dynamic behavior of individual polar vortices at the atomic scale provides fundamentals for future device applications.

Abstract:Propagation of electromagnetic waves in a piezoelectric superlattice is studied. Because of the piezoelectric effect, a coupling between two orthogonally polarized electromagnetic waves is induced by the superlattice vibration. As a consequence of the strong coupling, two types of polariton modes are found: one is supported in the band gap while the other prohibited. This unusual coupling effect is not present in classical lattices.

Abstract:We studied the propagation of an electromagnetic (EM) wave in a piezoelectric superlattice. Because of the piezoelectric effect, a transverse polarization can be induced by a longitudinal wave which couples strongly to the EM wave in some particular frequency regions, resulting in the creation of a new type of polariton that does not exist in ionic crystals. The forbidden band associated with the polariton is not due to the Bragg reflection, but rather to the coupling.

Abstract:We report the observation of polarization singularities in momentum space of 2D photonic quasicrystal slabs. Supercell approximation and band-unfolding approach are applied to obtain approximate photonic dispersions and the far-field polarization states defined on them. We discuss the relations between the topological charges of the polarization vortex singularities at Γ points and the symmetries of photonic quasicrystal slabs. With a perspective of multipolar expansions for the supercell, we confirm that the singularities are protected by the point-group symmetry of the photonic quasicrystal slab. We further uncover that the polarization singularities of photonic quasicrystal slab correspond to quasibound states in the continuum with exceptionally high-quality factors. Polarization singularities of different topological charges are also experimentally verified. Abstract:The polaritons in a two-dimensional artificial ionic-type crystal have been proposed and experimentally demonstrated from the two-dimensional periodically poled LiTaO3. In this artificially micro-structured materials, the anisotropic piezoelectric coefficients and the two-dimensional symmetric result in strong and complex couplings of the incident electromagnetic waves and the two-dimensional superlattice vibrations. We studied the dielectric anomalies, the coupling and transforming between two ordinary polariton modes etc., which reveal that, by engineering the ferroelectric domain’s distribution, the artificial ionic-type crystal may establish a new member of meta-materials, and will facilitate access to the device applications such as multi-directional and frequency transducers.

Abstract:We propose a practical scheme to observe the polaritonic quantum phase transition (QPT) from the superfluid (SF) to Bose-glass (BG) to Mott-insulator (MI) states. The system consists of a two-dimensional array of photonic crystal microcavities doped with substitutional donor/acceptor impurities. Using realistic parameters, we show that such strongly correlated polaritonic systems can be constructed using the state-of-art semiconductor technology.

Polarization textures in crystal supercells with topological bands

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials are a highly tunable platform for studying the momentum space topology of the electronic wavefunctions and real space topology in terms of skyrmions, merons, and vortices of an order parameter. Such textures for electronic polarization can exist in moiré heterostructures. A quantum-mechanical definition of local polarization textures in insulating supercells was recently proposed. Here, we propose a definition for local polarization that is also valid for systems with topologically non-trivial bands. We introduce semilocal hybrid polarizations, which are valid even when the Wannier functions in a system cannot be made exponentially localized in all dimensions. We use this definition to explicitly show that nontrivial real-space polarization textures can exist in topologically non-trivial systems with non-zero Chern number under (1) an external superlattice potential, and (2) under a stacking-induced moiré potential. In the latter, we find that while the magnitude of the local polarization decreases discontinuously across a topological phase transition from trivial to topologically nontrivial, the polarization does not completely vanish. Our findings suggest that band topology and real-space polar topology may coexist in real materials.

Abstract:Polaritons in strongly anisotropic thin layers have recently captured the attention in nanophotonics because of their directional propagation at the nanoscale, which offers unique possibilities for nanooptical applications. However, exploiting the full potential of anisotropic polaritons requires a thorough understanding of their properties, including field confinement, energy and phase propagation direction and losses. Here we fill this critical gap by providing fundamental insights into the propagation of anisotropic polaritons in thin biaxial layers. In particular, we introduce a novel methodology that allows us to represent isofrequency curves of polaritons in strongly anisotropic materials considering that the real and imaginary parts of the wavevector are not parallel. In fact, we analytically show that the direction of the imaginary part of the wavevector is parallel to the group velocity, which can have different, even perpendicular or opposite, directions with respect to the phase velocity. This finding is crucial for understanding polaritonic phenomena in anisotropic media, yet it has so far been widely overlooked in the literature. Additionally, we introduce a criterion for classifying the polaritonic modes in biaxial layers into volume and surface categories, and analyze their dispersion, field structure, and losses. Finally, we discover the existence of anisotropic transverse electric modes, which can exhibit natural canalization. Taken together, our results shed light on hitherto unexplored areas of the theory of electromagnetic modes in thin biaxial layers. Although exemplified for van der Waals MoO3 layers, our findings are general for polaritons in other strongly anisotropic biaxial hyperbolic crystals.

Abstract:Abstract Synthetic crystal lattices provide ideal environments for simulating and exploring the band structure of solid-state materials in clean and controlled experimental settings. Physical realisations have, so far, dominantly focused on implementing irreversible patterning of the system, or interference techniques such as optical lattices of cold atoms. Here, we realise reprogrammable synthetic band-structure engineering in an all optical exciton-polariton lattice. We demonstrate polariton condensation into excited states of linear one-dimensional lattices, periodic rings, dimerised non-trivial topological phases, and defect modes utilising malleable optically imprinted non-Hermitian potential landscapes. The stable excited nature of the condensate lattice with strong interactions between sites results in an actively tuneable non-Hermitian analogue of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger system.
