Abstract:We revisit tree compression with top trees (Bille et al, ICALP'13) and present several improvements to the compressor and its analysis. By significantly reducing the amount of information stored and guiding the compression step using a RePair-inspired heuristic, we obtain a fast compressor achieving good compression ratios, addressing an open problem posed by Bille et al. We show how, with relatively small overhead, the compressed file can be converted into an in-memory representation that supports basic navigation operations in worst-case logarithmic time without decompression. We also show a much improved worst-case bound on the size of the output of top-tree compression (answering an open question posed in a talk on this algorithm by Weimann in 2012).

Abstract:This paper considers a family of randomized on-line algorithms, Algorithm R(m), where 1 ⩽ m ⩽ n − 1 and n is the number of input points, for the on-line Steiner tree and on-line spanning tree problems on Euclidean space. Our main result is that if m is a fixed constant, the competitive ratios of Algorithm R(m) for the on-line Steiner tree and spanning tree problems are Θ(n). We also show that the competitive ratio of Algorithm R(n − 1), which is deterministic greedy algorithm, for the on-line spanning tree problem is the same as that for the on-line Steiner tree problem, which is O(log n).

Abstract:We show that the shortest $s$-$t$ path problem has the overlap-gap property in (i) sparse $\mathbf{G}(n,p)$ graphs and (ii) complete graphs with i.i.d. Exponential edge weights. Furthermore, we demonstrate that in sparse $\mathbf{G}(n,p)$ graphs, shortest path is solved by $O(\log n)$-degree polynomial estimators, and a uniform approximate shortest path can be sampled in polynomial time. This constitutes the first example in which the overlap-gap property is not predictive of algorithmic intractability for a (non-algebraic) average-case optimization problem.

Optimal Lower Bounds for Distributed and Streaming Spanning Forest Computation

Abstract:We show optimal lower bounds for spanning forest computation in two different models: * One wants a data structure for fully dynamic spanning forest in which updates can insert or delete edges amongst a base set of $n$ vertices. The sole allowed query asks for a spanning forest, which the data structure should successfully answer with some given (potentially small) constant probability $\epsilon>0$. We prove that any such data structure must use $\Omega(n\log^3 n)$ bits of memory. * There is a referee and $n$ vertices in a network sharing public randomness, and each vertex knows only its neighborhood; the referee receives no input. The vertices each send a message to the referee who then computes a spanning forest of the graph with constant probability $\epsilon>0$. We prove the average message length must be $\Omega(\log^3 n)$ bits. Both our lower bounds are optimal, with matching upper bounds provided by the AGM sketch [AGM12] (which even succeeds with probability $1 - 1/\mathrm{poly}(n)$). Furthermore, for the first setting we show optimal lower bounds even for low failure probability $\delta$, as long as $\delta > 2^{-n^{1-\epsilon}}$.

Joint Data Compression and Caching: Approaching Optimality with Guarantees

Abstract:We consider the problem of optimally compressing and caching data across a communication network. Given the data generated at edge nodes and a routing path, our goal is to determine the optimal data compression ratios and caching decisions across the network in order to minimize average latency, which can be shown to be equivalent to maximizing the compression and caching gain under an energy consumption constraint. We show that this problem is NP-hard in general and the hardness is caused by the caching decision subproblem, while the compression sub-problem is polynomial-time solvable. We then propose an approximation algorithm that achieves a (1-1/e)-approximation solution to the optimum in strongly polynomial time. We show that our proposed algorithm achieve the near-optimal performance in synthetic-based evaluations. In this paper, we consider a tree-structured network as an illustrative example, but our results easily extend to general network topology at the expense of more complicated notations.
Grammar Boosting: A New Technique for Proving Lower Bounds for Computation over Compressed Data

Abstract:Grammar compression is a general compression framework in which a string $T$ of length $N$ is represented as a context-free grammar of size $n$ whose language contains only $T$. In this paper, we focus on studying the limitations of algorithms and data structures operating on strings in grammar-compressed form. Previous work focused on proving lower bounds for grammars constructed using algorithms that achieve the approximation ratio $\rho=\mathcal{O}(\text{polylog }N)$. Unfortunately, for the majority of grammar compressors, $\rho$ is either unknown or satisfies $\rho=\omega(\text{polylog }N)$. In their seminal paper, Charikar et al. [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 2005] studied seven popular grammar compression algorithms: RePair, Greedy, LongestMatch, Sequential, Bisection, LZ78, and $\alpha$-Balanced. Only one of them ($\alpha$-Balanced) is known to achieve $\rho=\mathcal{O}(\text{polylog }N)$. We develop the first technique for proving lower bounds for data structures and algorithms on grammars that is fully general and does not depend on the approximation ratio $\rho$ of the used grammar compressor. Using this technique, we first prove that $\Omega(\log N/\log \log N)$ time is required for random access on RePair, Greedy, LongestMatch, Sequential, and Bisection, while $\Omega(\log\log N)$ time is required for random access to LZ78. All these lower bounds hold within space $\mathcal{O}(n\text{ polylog }N)$ and match the existing upper bounds. We also generalize this technique to prove several conditional lower bounds for compressed computation. For example, we prove that unless the Combinatorial $k$-Clique Conjecture fails, there is no combinatorial algorithm for CFG parsing on Bisection (for which it holds $\rho=\tilde{\Theta}(N^{1/2})$) that runs in $\mathcal{O}(n^c\cdot N^{3-\epsilon})$ time for all constants $c>0$ and $\epsilon>0$. Previously, this was known only for $c<2\epsilon$.

Compression by Contracting Straight-Line Programs

Abstract:In grammar-based compression a string is represented by a context-free grammar, also called a straight-line program (SLP), that generates only that string. We refine a recent balancing result stating that one can transform an SLP of size $g$ in linear time into an equivalent SLP of size $O(g)$ so that the height of the unique derivation tree is $O(\log N)$ where $N$ is the length of the represented string (FOCS 2019). We introduce a new class of balanced SLPs, called contracting SLPs, where for every rule $A \to \beta_1 \dots \beta_k$ the string length of every variable $\beta_i$ on the right-hand side is smaller by a constant factor than the string length of $A$. In particular, the derivation tree of a contracting SLP has the property that every subtree has logarithmic height in its leaf size. We show that a given SLP of size $g$ can be transformed in linear time into an equivalent contracting SLP of size $O(g)$ with rules of constant length. We present an application to the navigation problem in compressed unranked trees, represented by forest straight-line programs (FSLPs). We extend a linear space data structure by Reh and Sieber (2020) by the operation of moving to the $i$-th child in time $O(\log d)$ where $d$ is the degree of the current node. Contracting SLPs are also applied to the finger search problem over SLP-compressed strings where one wants to access positions near to a pre-specified finger position, ideally in $O(\log d)$ time where $d$ is the distance between the accessed position and the finger. We give a linear space solution where one can access symbols or move the finger in time $O(\log d + \log^{(t)} N)$ for any constant $t$ where $\log^{(t)} N$ is the $t$-fold logarithm of $N$. This improves a previous solution by Bille, Christiansen, Cording, and Gørtz (2018) with access/move time $O(\log d + \log \log N)$.

Abstract:It is shown that the problem of finding a maximal set of paths in a given (undirected or directed) graph is in NC. This result is then used to obtain three parallel approximation algorithms for the shortest superstring problem. The first is an NC algorithm achieving a compression ratio of 1/3+epsilon for any epsilon > 0. The second is an RNC algorithm achieving a compression ratio of 38/63 approximate to 0.603. The third is an RNC algo rithm achieving an approximation ratio of 250/63 approximate to 2.793. All the results significantly improve on the best previous ones.
A Piecewise Approach for the Analysis of Exact Algorithms

Abstract:To analyze the worst-case running time of branching algorithms, the majority of work in exponential time algorithms focuses on designing complicated branching rules over developing better analysis methods for simple algorithms. In the mid-$2000$s, Fomin et al. [2005] introduced measure & conquer, an advanced general analysis method, sparking widespread adoption for obtaining tighter worst-case running time upper bounds for many fundamental NP-complete problems. Yet, much potential in this direction remains untapped, as most subsequent work applied it without further advancement. Motivated by this, we present piecewise analysis, a new general method that analyzes the running time of branching algorithms. Our approach is to define a similarity ratio that divides instances into groups and then analyze the running time within each group separately. The similarity ratio is a scale between two parameters of an instance I. Instead of relying on a single measure and a single analysis for the whole instance space, our method allows to take advantage of different intrinsic properties of instances with different similarity ratios. To showcase its potential, we reanalyze two $17$-year-old algorithms from Fomin et al. [2007] that solve $4$-Coloring and #$3$-Coloring respectively. The original analysis in their paper gave running times of $O(1.7272^n)$ and $O(1.6262^n)$ respectively for these algorithms, our analysis improves these running times to $O(1.7207^n)$ and $O(1.6225^n)$.

Generalized Short Path Algorithms: Towards Super-Quadratic Speedup over Markov Chain Search for Combinatorial Optimization

Abstract:We analyze generalizations of algorithms based on the short-path framework first proposed by Hastings [Quantum 2, 78 (2018)], which has been extended and shown by Dalzell et al. [STOC '22] to achieve super-Grover speedups for certain binary optimization problems. We demonstrate that, under some commonly satisfied technical conditions, an appropriate generalization can achieve super-quadratic speedups not only over unstructured search but also over a classical optimization algorithm that searches for the optimum by drawing samples from the stationary distribution of a Markov Chain. We employ this framework to obtain algorithms for problems including variants of Max-Bisection, Max Independent Set, the Ising Model, and the Sherrington Kirkpatrick Model, whose runtimes are asymptotically faster than those obtainable from previous short path techniques. For random regular graphs of sufficiently high degree, our algorithm is super-quadratically faster than the best rigorously proven classical runtimes for regular graphs. Our results also shed light on the quantum nature of short path algorithms, by identifying a setting where our algorithm is super-quadratically faster than any polynomial time Gibbs sampler, unless NP = RP. We conclude the paper with a numerical analysis that guides the choice of parameters for short path algorithms and raises the possibility of super-quadratic speedups in settings that are currently beyond our theoretical analysis.

Expected Complexity of Routing in $Θ$ 6 and Half-$Θ$ 6 Graphs

Abstract:We study online routing algorithms on the $\Theta$6-graph and the half-$\Theta$6-graph (which is equivalent to a variant of the Delaunay triangulation). Given a source vertex s and a target vertex t in the $\Theta$6-graph (resp. half-$\Theta$6-graph), there exists a deterministic online routing algorithm that finds a path from s to t whose length is at most 2 st (resp. 2.89 st) which is optimal in the worst case [Bose et al., siam J. on Computing, 44(6)]. We propose alternative, slightly simpler routing algorithms that are optimal in the worst case and for which we provide an analysis of the average routing ratio for the $\Theta$6-graph and half-$\Theta$6-graph defined on a Poisson point process. For the $\Theta$6-graph, our online routing algorithm has an expected routing ratio of 1.161 (when s and t random) and a maximum expected routing ratio of 1.22 (maximum for fixed s and t where all other points are random), much better than the worst-case routing ratio of 2. For the half-$\Theta$6-graph, our memoryless online routing algorithm has an expected routing ratio of 1.43 and a maximum expected routing ratio of 1.58. Our online routing algorithm that uses a constant amount of additional memory has an expected routing ratio of 1.34 and a maximum expected routing ratio of 1.40. The additional memory is only used to remember the coordinates of the starting point of the route. Both of these algorithms have an expected routing ratio that is much better than their worst-case routing ratio of 2.89.

Fine-Grained Optimality of Partially Dynamic Shortest Paths and More

Abstract:Single Source Shortest Paths ($\textrm{SSSP}$) is among the most well-studied problems in computer science. In the incremental (resp. decremental) setting, the goal is to maintain distances from a fixed source in a graph undergoing edge insertions (resp. deletions). A long line of research culminated in a near-optimal deterministic $(1 + \varepsilon)$-approximate data structure with $m^{1 + o(1)}$ total update time over all $m$ updates by Bernstein, Probst Gutenberg and Saranurak [FOCS 2021]. However, there has been remarkably little progress on the exact $\textrm{SSSP}$ problem beyond Even and Shiloach's algorithm [J. ACM 1981] for unweighted graphs. For weighted graphs, there are no exact algorithms beyond recomputing $\textrm{SSSP}$ from scratch in $\widetilde{O}(m^2)$ total update time, even for the simpler Single-Source Single-Target Shortest Path problem ($\textrm{stSP}$). Despite this lack of progress, known (conditional) lower bounds only rule out algorithms with amortized update time better than $m^{1/2 - o(1)}$ in dense graphs. In this paper, we give a tight (conditional) lower bound: any partially dynamic exact $\textrm{stSP}$ algorithm requires $m^{2 - o(1)}$ total update time for any sparsity $m$. We thus resolve the complexity of partially dynamic shortest paths, and separate the hardness of exact and approximate shortest paths, giving evidence as to why no non-trivial exact algorithms have been obtained while fast approximation algorithms are known. Moreover, we give tight bounds on the complexity of combinatorial algorithms for several path problems that have been studied in the static setting since early sixties: Node-weighted shortest paths (studied alongside edge-weighted shortest paths), bottleneck paths (early work dates back to 1960), and earliest arrivals (early work dates back to 1958).

Near Optimal Bounds for Replacement Paths and Related Problems in the CONGEST Model

Abstract:We present several results in the CONGEST model on round complexity for Replacement Paths (RPaths), Minimum Weight Cycle (MWC), and All Nodes Shortest Cycles (ANSC). We study these fundamental problems in both directed and undirected graphs, both weighted and unweighted. Many of our results are optimal to within a polylog factor: For an $n$-node graph $G$ we establish near linear lower and upper bounds for computing RPaths if $G$ is directed and weighted, and for computing MWC and ANSC if $G$ is weighted, directed or undirected; near $\sqrt{n}$ lower and upper bounds for undirected weighted RPaths; and $\Theta(D)$ bound for undirected unweighted RPaths. We also present lower and upper bounds for approximation versions of these problems, notably a $(2-(1/g))$-approximation algorithm for undirected unweighted MWC that runs in $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{n}+D)$ rounds, improving on the previous best bound of $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{ng}+D)$ rounds, where $g$ is the MWC length. We present a $(1+\epsilon)$-approximation algorithm for directed weighted RPaths, which beats the linear lower bound for exact RPaths.

Faster Computation of Path-Width

Abstract:Tree-width and path-width are widely successful concepts. Many NP-hard problems have efficient solutions when restricted to graphs of bounded tree-width. Many efficient algorithms are based on a tree decomposition. Sometimes the more restricted path decomposition is required. The bottleneck for such algorithms is often the computation of the width and a corresponding tree or path decomposition. For graphs with $n$ vertices and tree-width or path-width $k$, the standard linear time algorithm to compute these decompositions dates back to 1996. Its running time is linear in $n$ and exponential in $k^3$ and not usable in practice. Here we present a more efficient algorithm to compute the path-width and provide a path decomposition. Its running time is $2^{O(k^2)} n$. In the classical algorithm of Bodlaender and Kloks, the path decomposition is computed from a tree decomposition. Here, an optimal path decomposition is computed from a path decomposition of about twice the width. The latter is computed from a constant factor smaller graph.

New Techniques and Fine-Grained Hardness for Dynamic Near-Additive Spanners

Abstract:Maintaining and updating shortest paths information in a graph is a fundamental problem with many applications. As computations on dense graphs can be prohibitively expensive, and it is preferable to perform the computations on a sparse skeleton of the given graph that roughly preserves the shortest paths information. Spanners and emulators serve this purpose. This paper develops fast dynamic algorithms for sparse spanner and emulator maintenance and provides evidence from fine-grained complexity that these algorithms are tight. Under the popular OMv conjecture, we show that there can be no decremental or incremental algorithm that maintains an $n^{1+o(1)}$ edge (purely additive) $+n^{\delta}$-emulator for any $\delta<1/2$ with arbitrary polynomial preprocessing time and total update time $m^{1+o(1)}$. Also, under the Combinatorial $k$-Clique hypothesis, any fully dynamic combinatorial algorithm that maintains an $n^{1+o(1)}$ edge $(1+\epsilon,n^{o(1)})$-spanner or emulator must either have preprocessing time $mn^{1-o(1)}$ or amortized update time $m^{1-o(1)}$. Both of our conditional lower bounds are tight. As the above fully dynamic lower bound only applies to combinatorial algorithms, we also develop an algebraic spanner algorithm that improves over the $m^{1-o(1)}$ update time for dense graphs. For any constant $\epsilon\in (0,1]$, there is a fully dynamic algorithm with worst-case update time $O(n^{1.529})$ that whp maintains an $n^{1+o(1)}$ edge $(1+\epsilon,n^{o(1)})$-spanner. Our new algebraic techniques and spanner algorithms allow us to also obtain (1) a new fully dynamic algorithm for All-Pairs Shortest Paths (APSP) with update and path query time $O(n^{1.9})$; (2) a fully dynamic $(1+\epsilon)$-approximate APSP algorithm with update time $O(n^{1.529})$; (3) a fully dynamic algorithm for near-$2$-approximate Steiner tree maintenance.

Abstract:We analyze the Disjoint Path Allocation problem (DPA) in the priority framework. Motivated by the problem of traffic regulation in communication networks, DPA consists of allocating edge-disjoint paths in a graph. While online algorithms for DPA have been thoroughly studied in the past, we extend the analysis of this optimization problem by considering the more powerful class of priority algorithms. Like an online algorithm, a priority algorithm receives its input only sequentially and must output irrevocable decisions for individual input items before having seen the input in its entirety. However, in contrast to the online setting, a priority algorithm may choose an order on the set of all possible input items and the actual input is then presented according to this order. A priority algorithm is a natural model for the intuitively well-understood concept of a greedy algorithm. Apart from analyzing the classical priority setting, we also consider priority algorithms with advice. Originally conceived to study online algorithms from an information-theoretic point of view, the concept of advice has recently been extended to the priority framework. In this paper, we analyze the classical variant of the DPA problem on the graph class of paths, the related problem of Length-Weighted DPA, and finally, DPA on the graph class of trees. We show asymptotically matching upper and lower bounds on the advice necessary for optimality in LWDPA and generalize the known optimality result for DPA on paths to trees with maximal degree at most 3. On trees with maximal degree greater than 3, we prove matching upper and lower bounds on the approximation ratio in the advice-free priority setting. Finally, we present upper and lower bounds on the advice necessary to achieve optimality on such trees.

Abstract:In portfolio compression, market participants (banks, organizations, companies, financial agents) sign contracts, creating liabilities between each other, which increases the systemic risk. Large, dense markets commonly can be compressed by reducing obligations without lowering the net notional of each participant (an example is if liabilities make a cycle between agents, then it is possible to reduce each of them without any net notional changing), and our target is to eliminate as much excess notional as possible in practice (excess is defined as the difference between gross and net notional). A limiting factor that may reduce the effectiveness of the compression can be the preferences and priorities of compression participants, who may individually define conditions for the compression, which must be considered when designing the clearing process, otherwise, a participant may bail out, resulting in the designed clearing process to be impossible to execute. These markets can be well-represented with edge-weighted graphs. In this paper, I examine cases when preferences of participants on behalf of clearing are given, e.g., in what order would they pay back their liabilities (a key factor can be the rate of interest) and I show a clearing algorithm for these problems. On top of that, since it is a common goal for the compression coordinating authority to maximize the compressed amount, I also show a method to compute the maximum volume conservative compression in a network. I further evaluate the possibility of combining the two models. Examples and program code of the model are also shown, also a0 pseudo-code of the clearing algorithms.

Abstract:Permutation pattern-avoidance is a central concept of both enumerative and extremal combinatorics. In this paper we study the effect of permutation pattern-avoidance on the complexity of optimization problems. In the context of the dynamic optimality conjecture (Sleator, Tarjan, STOC 1983), Chalermsook, Goswami, Kozma, Mehlhorn, and Saranurak (FOCS 2015) conjectured that the amortized search cost of an optimal binary search tree (BST) is constant whenever the search sequence is pattern-avoiding. The best known bound to date is $2^{\alpha{(n)}(1+o(1))}$ recently obtained by Chalermsook, Pettie, and Yingchareonthawornchai (SODA 2024); here $n$ is the BST size and $\alpha(\cdot)$ the inverse-Ackermann function. In this paper we resolve the conjecture, showing a tight $O(1)$ bound. This indicates a barrier to dynamic optimality: any candidate online BST (e.g., splay trees or greedy trees) must match this optimum, but current analysis techniques only give superconstant bounds. More broadly, we argue that the easiness of pattern-avoiding input is a general phenomenon, not limited to BSTs or even to data structures. To illustrate this, we show that when the input avoids an arbitrary, fixed, a priori unknown pattern, one can efficiently compute a $k$-server solution of $n$ requests from a unit interval, with total cost $n^{O(1/\log k)}$, in contrast to the worst-case $\Theta(n/k)$ bound; and a traveling salesman tour of $n$ points from a unit box, of length $O(\log{n})$, in contrast to the worst-case $\Theta(\sqrt{n})$ bound; similar results hold for the euclidean minimum spanning tree, Steiner tree, and nearest-neighbor graphs. We show both results to be tight. Our techniques build on the Marcus-Tardos proof of the Stanley-Wilf conjecture, and on the recently emerging concept of twin-width.
