Abstract:Software is the key technology in applications as diverse as accounting, hospital management, aviation, and nuclear power. Application advances in different domains-each with different requirements-have propelled software development from small batch programs to large, real-time programs with multimedia capabilities. To cope, software's enabling technologies have undergone tremendous improvement in hardware, communications, operating systems, compilers, databases, programming languages, and user interfaces, among others.Despite these advances, the main issues of software engineering remain relatively stable. Addressing these concerns will not be a simple matter. As an engineering discipline, software engineering techniques must be consistently easy to use and consistently effective in practice to be useful. Software engineering as a whole will eventually mature when any software development group that follows a prescribed process and associated techniques can consistently-and quickly-produce reliable, reusable, and robust software.

Abstract:Software development is becoming a more and more complicated task, and traditional client/server based software engineering management methods may not be suitable for large-scale software development. With the rapid development of the network technologies solutions have been emerged. This paper proposes a software engineering management method based on the Peer-to-Peer infrastructure. By exploring the characteristics of P2P, our system takes "Peer Group" as the unit to build up services such as source code management, task assignment, and software visualization. Our framework overcomes the bottleneck existed in the server in the traditional C/S structure, and transfers the loads of the server to the network boundary. Our method takes full advantages of the computation resources, and increases the system's performances. A performance test using our method in software development for practical applications will also be shown in the paper.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the network technologies, software development is becoming more and more complicated. Traditional software engineering management methods based on Client/Server structure have not been very competent for large-scale software development. This paper proposes a software engineering management method based on P2P structure. By exploring the characteristics of P2P, our system takes “Peer Group” as the unit to build up services including source code management, task assignment and software visualization. Although it still has a server in the network, the server only provides indexing function and does not store the document. Abstract:In the past 40 years, software engineering has emerged as an important sub-field of computer science and has made significant contribution to the software industry. Now it is gradually becoming a new independent discipline. This paper presents a survey of software engineering development from a research perspective. Firstly, the history of software engineering is reviewed with focus on the driving forces of software technology, the software engineering framework and the milestones of software engineering development. Secondly, after reviewing the past academic efforts, the current research activities are surveyed and new challenges brought by Internet are analyzed. Software engineering researches and activities in China are also reviewed. The work in Peking University is described as a representative.

Abstract:AbstractThis paper is the first in a new annual series whose goal is to answer the following question: what are the active research focuses within the field of software engineering? We considered 7 top journals and 7 top international conferences in software engineering and examined all the 691 papers published in these journals or presented at these conferences in 2006. Consequently, we have a number of findings.(1)Seventy-three percent of journal papers focus on 20% of subject indexes in software engineering, including Testing and Debugging (D.2.5), Management (D.2.9), and Software/Program Verification (D.2.4). (2)Eighty-nine percent of conference papers focus on 20% of subject indexes in software engineering, including Software/Program Verification (D.2.4), Testing and Debugging (D.2.5), and Design Tools and Techniques (D.2.2). (3)Seventy-seven percent of journal/conference papers focus on 20% of subject indexes in software engineering, including Testing and Debugging (D.2.5), Software/Program Verification (D.2.4), and Management (D.2.9). (4)The average number of references cited by a journal paper is about 33, whereas this number becomes around 24 for a conference paper.

Abstract:Modern software-based systems operate under rapidly changing conditions and face ever-increasing uncertainty. In response, systems are increasingly adaptive and reliant on artificial-intelligence methods. In addition to the ubiquity of software with respect to users and application areas (e.g., transportation, smart grids, medicine, etc.), these high-impact software systems necessarily draw from many disciplines for foundational principles, domain expertise, and workflows. Recent progress with lowering the barrier to entry for coding has led to a broader community of developers, who are not necessarily software engineers. As such, the field of software engineering needs to adapt accordingly and offer new methods to systematically develop high-quality software systems by a broad range of experts and non-experts. This paper looks at these new challenges and proposes to address them through the lens of Abstraction. Abstraction is already used across many disciplines involved in software development -- from the time-honored classical deductive reasoning and formal modeling to the inductive reasoning employed by modern data science. The software engineering of the future requires Abstraction Engineering -- a systematic approach to abstraction across the inductive and deductive spaces. We discuss the foundations of Abstraction Engineering, identify key challenges, highlight the research questions that help address these challenges, and create a roadmap for future research.

Abstract:Society today cannot run without software and by extension, without Software Engineering. Since this discipline emerged in 1968, practitioners have learned valuable lessons that have contributed to current practices. Some have become outdated but many are still relevant and widely used. Abstract:In 1989, the gap between the software industry and software engineering education was first mentioned. Its existence has been regularly reported on since then, and solutions to close it have been proposed. However, after thirty years, all efforts to close the gap have failed. In this study, we argue that the gap between industry and academia exists for a variety of interconnected reasons. To take a broader look at the problem from the standpoint of all related entities, we provide a detailed overview of the profession and identify the entities, extract the causes that stem from these entities, and discuss what each entity should do, report and analyse the results of a questionnaire that was administered to students and recent graduates, highlight the highlights of interviews with students, recent graduates, and academics, We also contribute to finding solutions by considering all entities involved, which allows us to reach out to all of them and find out what they can do to acknowledge and close the gap. Our research concludes that the gap requires constant attention and hard work from all parties involved, and that everyone should be on the lookout for new technologies, learn to embrace changes, and adapt to them in order to keep the gap to a minimum.

Abstract:Robots are experiencing a revolution as they permeate many aspects of our daily lives, from performing house maintenance to infrastructure inspection, from efficiently warehousing goods to autonomous vehicles, and more. This technical progress and its impact are astounding. This revolution, however, is outstripping the capabilities of existing software development processes, techniques, and tools, which largely have remained unchanged for decades. These capabilities are ill-suited to handling the challenges unique to robotics software such as dealing with a wide diversity of domains, heterogeneous hardware, programmed and learned components, complex physical environments captured and modeled with uncertainty, emergent behaviors that include human interactions, and scalability demands that span across multiple dimensions.

Abstract:Robots that support humans by performing useful tasks (a.k.a., service robots) are booming worldwide. In contrast to industrial robots, the development of service robots comes with severe software engineering challenges, since they require high levels of robustness and autonomy to operate in highly heterogeneous environments. As a domain with critical safety implications, service robotics faces a need for sound software development practices. In this paper, we present the first large-scale empirical study to assess the state of the art and practice of robotics software engineering. We conducted 18 semi-structured interviews with industrial practitioners working in 15 companies from 9 different countries and a survey with 156 respondents (from 26 countries) from the robotics domain. Our results provide a comprehensive picture of (i) the practices applied by robotics industrial and academic practitioners, including processes, paradigms, languages, tools, frameworks, and reuse practices, (ii) the distinguishing characteristics of robotics software engineering, and (iii) recurrent challenges usually faced, together with adopted solutions. The paper concludes by discussing observations, derived hypotheses, and proposed actions for researchers and practitioners.

Abstract:This paper represents preliminary work in identifying the foundation for the discipline of Software Engineering and discovering the links between the domains of Software Engineering and Information Technology (IT). Our research utilized IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (IEEE-TSE), ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology (ACM-TOSEM), Automated Software Engineering (ASE), the International Conference on Software Engineering(ICSE), and other related journal publication in the software engineering domain to address our research questions. We explored existing frameworks and described the need for software engineering as an academic discipline. We went further to clarify the distinction difference between Software Engineering and Computer Science. Through this efforts we contribute to an understanding of how evidence from IT research can be used to improve Software Engineering as a discipline.

Abstract:Software engineering environments have a history of about two decades. Early environments provided support for small fragments of the software process (usually focusing on programming-in-the small). Then there was a trend towards support for more complete software processes (from early phases like requirements analysis and design down to testing and configuration management). Ten years ago the notion of process-centered software engineering environments initiated a new field in software engineering: software process research. The key idea is to use a model of a software process as input parameter for a software engineering environment. The environment is supposed to “behave” in accordance to the process model. Some aspects of this vision became true, others turned out to be of little practicability. In this article, we discuss the history of software engineering environments with a particular focus on process-centered software engineering environments (PCSEEs). We discuss the notion of distributed software processes (as one of the most substantial current trends in software process research) and we motivate the notion of a software process middleware which serves as basis of real-world software processes spread over various sites. In addition, we discuss some other trends in the software process research arena.

Abstract:Software is a field of rapid changes: the best technology today becomes obsolete in the near future. If we review the graduate attributes of any of the software engineering programs across the world, life-long learning is one of them. The social and psychological aspects of professional development is linked with rewards. In organizations, where people are provided with learning opportunities and there is a culture that rewards learning, people embrace changes easily. However, the software industry tends to be short-sighted and its primary focus is more on current project success; it usually ignores the capacity building of the individual or team. It is hoped that our software engineering colleagues will be motivated to conduct more research into the area of software psychology so as to understand more completely the possibilities for increased effectiveness and personal fulfillment among software engineers working alone and in teams.
