Abstract:Architectural energy-saving has become a hotspot in the world. Energy-saving for the existing public buildings could not only reduce energy consumption effectively, but also improve both outdoor environment and indoor healthy comfort to advance the quality of life and work, so it is a work of great significance. Combining with study process on energy-saving renovation for existing public buildings at home and abroad, this article analyzes the status of energy consumption in China and its significance to hope that the renovation work could be done smoothly through the cooperation of users, designers and government.

Abstract:Energy-saving renovations of existing residential buildings have proven to be very helpful in alleviating the pressure of energy shortages and CO2 emission, but an economic analysis of the measures by using a life cycle cost (LCC) method is very important and necessary to determine whether to implement them or not. Based on thermal simulation and site investigation, the paper uses one urban existing residential building in Hangzhou city of China as the subject building, and analyzes the economic benefits from the energy-saving renovation measures through the LCC method.The findings clearly show that the investigation of the factual electricity consumption of the subject building is very important to predict accurately the energy-saving effects and financial benefits of the measures for the building, because of the great discrepancy between in fact and in thermal simulation of the heating and cool loads, and the too cheap electricity price may hamper the development of energy-saving implementations in residential sector in China. Abstract:According to the climate characteristics in Hot Summer and Cold Winter (HSCW) zone, this study summarizes the special strategies for retrofitting the Existing Residential Buildings (ERB) in four aspects: envelop reformation, external environment improvement, energy saving behavior and renewable energy utilization. Then this study constructs the evaluation system frame of energy saving effect through 3 factors which are architecture design, construction and economic investment to comprehensively assess the practical effect of transforming. This research chooses a classical residential building in Huzhou as a case study and adopts the technologies to rebuild and uses the above evaluation system to figure out the most suitable reforming project. We hope our study about the reconstruction technologies and evaluation system can give some reference to renovation of existing residential buildings in other regions in China.

Abstract:The suitable energy-efficiency renovation measures of existing residential buildings in the hot summer and cold winter region and their effects on reducing energy use and CO2 emission were analyzed.One typical building in Hangzhou city was selected as a case study and its thermal attribute was analyzed.Seven rational energy-efficiency renovation measures based upon the energy-efficiency standards were proposed after analyzing the variables' feasibility in simulation and improvement practice.The energy saving effects of the measures were evaluated using the feedback coefficient method in dynamic simulation.CO2 emissions were analyzed by a simplified life-cycle assessment(LCA) method.Then a suitable plan was developed.Results show that the energy-efficiency renovation through updating the thermal insulation of building envelopes is very beneficial in reducing energy use and CO2 emission.

Abstract:Hot summer and cold winter zone is a typical climate region in China with high temperatures and stuffiness in summer and low temperature and moisture in winter. The existing buildings bear of both poor thermal performance of building envelope and poor indoor thermal environment. With the development of social economy, increasing demand towards building indoor thermal environment is much more urgent than before, and hence energy consumption has rapidly risen. Energy efficiency retrofit with low cost has become a priority in this region. Universities and colleges are one of the typical energy consumers in this region, which are insufficient in research. Over all the campus buildings, research building occupies a large part in total campus energy use, and hence becomes the main retrofit objects. Research buildings have complicated functions of offices, scientific research and laboratories, and space heating and cooling behaviors have their own characteristics, which have the large effect on space heating and cooling use. However, there is little knowledge about adaptive thermal comfort and corresponding heating and conditioning energy-use behaviors. In view of this, in this paper, a typical research building located in Hangzhou was chosen and the measurements on indoor thermal environment heating and cooling behaviors, fenestration and energy consumption were carried out during July 2016 to October 2017. By the analysis on field investigation, delivered questionnaires and measured data, the typical space heating and cooling behaviors, fenestration and thermal environment are analyzed. On this base, energy efficiency optimization strategies in terms of building envelope thermal performance, sun shading, and adaptive space heating and cooling behavior are explored by the simulation. The study provides the technic support for energy saving retrofitting of campus buildings in this region.

Abstract:Urban residential buildings are the prime contributors to carbon emissions, whose reduction is significantly affected by old residential areas as essential components of urban renewal. In current studies on the potential for carbon reduction in residential localities, the measurement standard mostly used is the amount of carbon reduced during operations because of the energy-saving renovation of building monomers. This study conducted a life cycle assessment for the carbon emission impact analysis of the renovation of old residential areas, with a comprehensive consideration of carbon emissions at the materialization, demolition, and use stages of the renovation process. Five systems in these areas were evaluated: landscape greening, building monomers, water resources, solid waste, and infrastructure. An actual residential renovation case was used as a reference in comparing the life cycle carbon reduction effects of different technical measures. The results showed that carbon reduction effects are overestimated by 5.54% (from 29.59% to 35.13%) when embodied carbon is disregarded. Among the renovation measures, adding green spaces, recycling garbage, and replacing energy-saving lamps in public areas offer short carbon payback, whereas the addition of rooftop solar photovoltaic panels is the most efficient carbon-reduction measure. This study completes and expands the scope of accounting for residential renovation from spatial and temporal scales. It can also guide the low-carbon renovation of old residential areas to help cities save energy and reduce emissions.

Abstract:The urban environment faces tremendous pressure from the intensification of urbanization. The pursuit of a comfortable built environment aims at higher and tougher grounds, leading to increasing energy consumption of heating, air conditioning, lighting, etc. In the residential sector, thermal insulation is a practical, efficient approach to moderate energy consumption in buildings. The objective of thermal insulation is to reduce heat loss or heat gain, in order to reduce energy costs by the use of smart, energy-saving materials, and construction. This research is initiated to investigate optimal performance of innovative building envelop application. Two building envelopes – enhanced insulation and Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) – were modeled and analyzed. The analysis considered impacts related to their energy performance, economic performance, life cycle performance, and overall potentials. The results are expected to enable stakeholder choice-making based on specific requirements.

Abstract:Energy efficiency retrofit of residential buildings, widely carried out in north China, has been aroused a great concern during recent years. In this case, one typical residential building with energy efficiency retrofit was selected in Tangshan as a case study. Indoor thermal environment and space heating use of the building were measured before and after the retrofit. A methodology is developed to evaluate the energy-saving, environmental and economic benefits for the retrofit. Results show the full-scale retrofit in this building can meet the 50% energy saving target set by the government. Indoor thermal environment achieved a good improvement after the full-scale retrofit as well. The results could be a reference of evaluation and optimization of energy efficiency retrofit schemes of residential buildings in north China.

Abstract:Energy saving and environmental protection have become the core development concept of China construction industry. There are still a large number of old urban buildings in Beijing, whose energy consumption far exceeds the current building energy efficiency standards. The energy-saving renovation of these old buildings has been becoming the focus and difficulty of urban building energy-saving. In this paper, a calculation model based on the TNM Decree is proposed to calculate and analyze the energy consumption of heating and domestic hot water supply in winter before and after the renovation of old urban buildings in Beijing. The calculation results show that the thermal insulation performance of building envelope is a key factor affecting the energy consumption of old urban buildings. After the renovation, the energy-saving rate of the old urban buildings completed between 1978 and 1985 can reach 65.53%. The energy-saving rate of the buildings completed between 1986 and 1995 and that between 1996 and 2005 can reach 55.04% and 32.79%, respectively.

Abstract:A six-story existing residential building in Tangshan City is selected to perform energy saving retrofit for building envelope and heat metering.The heat consumption and indoor temperature in two heating periods before and after the retrofit are measured,and the subjective evaluation on indoor temperature and air tightness of external window as well as the energy saving consciousness of residents are investigated.The indexes of heat consumption per unit area which are converted into indoor design temperature of 18 ℃ are 31.11 and 15.80 W/m2 respectively before and after the retrofit.The average indoor temperature increases from 20.09 ℃ to 22.91 ℃,the air tightness of external window is significantly improved,and the energy saving consciousness of residents is enhanced to some extent.
Barriers for Homeowners in Decisions to Undertake Government-Led Energy Efficiency Renovation Projects in Northern China

Abstract:The Chinese government has taken actions to promote energy efficiency through the renovation of residential buildings in the Northern Heating Region. Homeowners have been encouraged to undertake government-led energy efficiency renovation; however, their decisions to undertake the renovation are affected by several barriers. The lack of participation from homeowners has brought difficulties in execution and financing. This study empirically investigated the barriers facing homeowners when undertaking the renovation, including barriers generated from the homeowner's cognitive biases. The results show that barriers associated with capital cost, unbalanced financial plan, unclear process, comfort, and increased energy prices are the most widely considered when homeowners make decisions about undertaking renovation projects. An adverse decision is most likely to be generated when: (1) when homeowners perceive the financial plan as unfair, (2) when they have already done renovation at their own expense, or (3) when they have the feeling of losing initiative. Among all the individual factors, the homeowners' gender, age, education level, and building type are significant in predicting their decisions. By drawing on insights from behavioral economics, we analyzed the mechanisms behind these barriers. The findings can help policymakers to design more cost-effective policy instruments to mitigate the barriers.

Abstract:Residential energy efficiency is quite important for the sustainable development of our community.Based on the introduction of market dynamics of Energy-saving Housing in China,this paper analyzes the factors affecting the decision-makings for Energy-saving Housing demand and supply by using the mathematical economic ways.The results indicate that asymmetric information,housing finance policy,tax policy and insurance policy are the major effective factors.Thus,the paper develops a policy framework to promote the residential energy efficiency in China.

Abstract:At present,retrofit of public buildings on energy efficiency in China has achieved gratifying results,yet there are problems to be solved.This paper,based on investigations,examines problems existed during retrofits in metropolis and then demonstrates the importance and significance of controlling thermal comfort standards as well as adopting compositive energy-efficient technologies based on energy diagnosis.The paper takes a retrofit project in an university of Xi'an as an example,points out properties operating characteristic of architecture,advocating that detailed analysis on climate conditions and utilization patterns of target buildings are essential to set reasonable thermal comfort standards;energy diagnosis should also be paid attention to identify the potentials for energy conservation.

Abstract:The residential buildings in Beichuan before the strong earthquake,are normally built with materials and components of inadequate thermal performance,and that causes poor indoor thermal environment—too cold and humid in winter and sweltering in summer.In reconstruction,the residential buildings both in town and rural areas are going to be built for improved thermal performance,which could regulate room temperature passively to some extent.Based on the local conditions,sets the more suitable room thermal environment parameter and evaluation indicator,and then use DeST-h software to optimize the energy saving scheme.

Abstract:Energy consumption of buildings accounts for more than 37.3% of total energy consumption while the proportion of energy-saving buildings is just 5% in China. In this paper, in order to save potential energy, the building envelope retrofitting is considered. An office building in Southern China was selected as a test example for energy consumption characteristics. The base building model was developed by TRNSYS software and validated against the recorded data from the field work in six days out of August-September in 2013. In addition, with a design of numerical simulation, sensitivity analysis was conducted for energy performance of building envelope retrofitting; six envelope parameters were analyzed for assessing the thermal responses. Results show that significant energy savings are obtained for the thermal transmittance (U-value) of exterior walls, infiltration rate, ventilation and shading coefficient, of which the sum relative sensitivity is about 91.06%. The results are evaluated in terms of energy and economic analysis. On the other hand, it appears that the cost-effective method improves the efficiency of investment management in building energy.

Abstract:Under the backdrop of China's national strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, efforts are underway across governmental, corporate, societal, and individual sectors to actively explore energy-saving renovations in existing buildings. Given that residential buildings constitute a significant proportion of the total energy consumption throughout the lifecycle of buildings in China, sustainable renovation of residential structures can contribute significantly to implementing China's carbon emission reduction policies. While there exists a plethora of technological means in the market aimed at improving the energy performance of residential buildings, there still needs to be a more systematic discussion on the framework for sustainable renovation of existing Chinese residential buildings, with knowledge dissemination still needing to be more cohesive. In this context, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the field, utilizing bibliometric methods. Through a systematic review of selected peer-reviewed literature from the Web of Science and Scopus databases, the study focuses on the sustainable renovation of existing Chinese residential buildings, categorizing the process into three main stages: sustainable renovation, building performance simulation and suitability assessment. The paper also reviews the research methods adopted by previous researchers in the renovation, simulation and assessment stages, considering various optimization algorithms, variables, objectives, and software tools. Subsequently, the paper synthesizes a research framework comprising these three stages combined for different research objectives, aiming to assist policymakers, designers, and researchers in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the implementation status of sustainable renovation in existing Chinese residential buildings, identifying barriers to implementation, and formulating more efficient renovation policies and strategies for the future.

Abstract:In order to full find out the basic situation of energy consumption of public buildings in China,and to provide a powerful data support for the building energy-saving work and management decision of energy field,it is necessary to set up a scientific statistical system for energy consumption of public buildings throughout China.The establishing statistical system for energy consumption of public buildings is studied.The statistical index system for energy consumption of public buildings is established in three aspects,including basic information concerning public buildings,possession and utilization of energy consumption equipment,and daily,monthly and annual energy consumption of public buildings.The statistical report on energy consumption of public buildings is designed.
