Abstract:We propose a method for determining the solution and source term of a generalized time-fractional diffusion equation. The method is based on selecting a bi-orthogonal basis of L2 space corresponding to a nonself-adjoint boundary value problem. Uniqueness is proven and an existence result is obtained for smooth initial and final conditions. The asymptotic behavior of the generalized Mittag–Leffler function is used to relax the smoothness requirement on these conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an inverse problem of determining the time-dependent source coefficient in a semilinear reaction–diffusion equation involving the Caputo fractional time derivative of order in the case of nonlocal boundary and integral overdetermination conditions. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the classical solution by Fourier analysis and the iteration method. Moreover, we show the continuous dependence of this solution upon the additional data of the inverse problem.

Abstract:This paper studies an inverse source problem for a time fractional diffusion equation with the distributed order Caputo derivative. The space-dependent source term is recovered from a noisy final data. The uniqueness, ill-posedness and a conditional stability for this inverse source problem are obtained. The inverse problem is formulated into a minimization functional with Tikhonov regularization method. Further, based on the series representation of the regularized solution, we give convergence rates of the regularized solution under an a-priori and an a-posteriori regularization parameter choice rule. With an adjoint technique for computing the gradient of the regularization functional, the conjugate gradient method is applied to reconstruct the space-dependent source term. Two numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with an inverse pointwise source problem for the time-fractional diffusion equation in the two-dimensional case. The source term to be identified models the action of a finite number of small particles. Each particle is assumed to be no larger than a single point, characterized by its location and intensity. Both theoretical and numerical aspects are discussed. In the theoretical part, we analyse the well-posedness of the Dirac time-fractional diffusion problem. For the inverse problem, we establish that the unknown point sources can be uniquely identified from local measured data and we derive a local Lipschitz stability result. In the numerical part, we develop a fast and accurate reconstruction approach. The unknown pointwise sources are characterized as solution to an optimization problem minimizing a tracking-type functional. A noniterative reconstruction algorithm is devised, allowing us to determine the number, locations and intensities of the pointwise sources. The efficiency of the proposed approach is confirmed by some numerical examples.

Abstract:In this work the authors consider an inverse source problem in the following stochastic fractional diffusion equation $$\partial_t^\alpha u(x,t)+\mathcal{A} u(x,t)=f(x)h(t)+g(x) \dot{\mathbb{W}}(t).$$ The interested inverse problem is to reconstruct $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ by the statistics of the final time data $u(x,T).$ Some direct problem results are proved at first, such as the existence, uniqueness, representation and regularity of the solution. Then the reconstruction scheme for $f$ and $g$ is given. To tackle the ill-posedness, the Tikhonov regularization is adopted. Finally we give a regularized reconstruction algorithm and some numerical results are displayed.

An inverse source problem for the stochastic multi-term time-fractional diffusion-wave equation

Abstract:In this paper, we study both the direct and inverse random source problems associated with the multi-term time-fractional diffusion-wave equation driven by a fractional Brownian motion. Regarding the direct problem, the well-posedness is established and the regularity of the solution is characterized for the equation. In the context of the inverse problem, the uniqueness and instability are investigated on the determination of the random source. Furthermore, a reconstruction formula is provided for the phaseless Fourier modes of the diffusion coefficient in the random source, based on the variance of the boundary data. To reconstruct the time-dependent source function from its phaseless Fourier modes, the PhaseLift method, combined with a spectral cut-off regularization technique, is employed to tackle the phase retrieval problem. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through a series of numerical experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an inverse source problem with nonlocal boundary conditions for the heat equation involving multi-term time-fractional derivatives. We determine a source term independent of the space variable, and the temperature distribution from the energy measurement. We reduce the solution of the inverse problem to finding solutions to two problems. The well-posedness of each problem is shown using the generalized Fourier method.

Abstract:This study addresses the inverse source problem for the fractional diffusion-wave equation, characterized by a source comprising spatial and temporal components. The investigation is primarily concerned with practical scenarios where data is collected subsequent to an incident. We establish the uniqueness of either the spatial or the temporal component of the source, provided that the temporal component exhibits an asymptotic expansion at infinity. Taking anomalous diffusion as a typical example, we gather the asymptotic behavior of one of the following quantities: the concentration on partial interior region or at a point inside the region, or the flux on partial boundary or at a point on the boundary. The proof is based on the asymptotic expansion of the solution to the fractional diffusion-wave equation. Notably, our approach does not rely on the conventional vanishing conditions for the source components. We also observe that the extent of uniqueness is dependent on the fractional order.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the inverse problem of recovering the time dependent source term in a time fractional diffusion equation, in the case of nonlocal boundary condition and integral overdetermination condition. The boundary conditions of this problem are regular but not strongly regular. The existence and uniqueness of the solution are established by applying generalized Fourier method based on the expansion in terms of root functions of a spectral problem, weakly singular Volterra integral equation and fractional type Gronwall’s inequality. Moreover, we show its continuous dependence on the data.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to recovering the source term for a time-fractional diffusion equation from additional temperature data at fixed time t=1. We discuss a uniqueness result of the direct problem and the ill-posedness of the inverse problem, and then apply the iterative quasi-reversibility regularization method to solve the inverse problem. Finally, some one-dimensional and two-dimensional numerical examples are given to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:In the present paper we consider an inverse source problem for time-fractional mixed parabolic-hyperbolic equation with the Caputo derivative. In case, when hyperbolic part of the considered mixed type equation is wave equation, the uniqueness of source and solution are strongly influenced by initial time and generally is ill-posed. However, when the hyperbolic part is time fractional, the problem is well posed if end time is large. Our method relies on the orthonormal system of eigenfunctions of the operator with respect to space variable. We proved the uniqueness and stability of certain weak solutions for considered problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the inverse problem of finding a time-dependent multiplier of the right-hand side of a time-fractional one-dimensional diffusion equation with variables coefficients in the case where the usual Cauchy, homogeneous Dirichlet boundary, and an integral overdetermination conditions are given. The overdetermination condition has the form of an integral with a weight over a spatial segment from the solution of the direct problem, in which the weight function is a spatially dependent known factor of the right-hand side of the equation. This made it possible to construct a solution to the inverse problem in explicit form and prove its correctness in the class of regular solutions

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the fundamental solution of the time-space bi-fractional diffusion equation incorporating an additional kinetic source term in semi-infinite space. The equation is a generalization of the integer-order model (also known as the Debye–Falkenhagen equation) by replacing the first-order time derivative with the Caputo fractional derivative of order , and the second-order space derivative with the Riesz-Feller fractional derivative of order . Using the Laplace-Fourier transforms method, it is shown that the parametric solutions are expressed in terms of the Fox's H -function that we evaluate for different values of and .

Abstract:This paper explores the inverse problems of the space-time fractional diffusion equation driven by a space-time fractional Brownian sheet, including spatial stochastic source term, spatial deterministic source term, potential, and fractional order. In order to deal with the stochastic integral of fractional Brownian sheet with space-time Hurst indexes , we construct a unified Itô isometry framework for the first time, upon which we establish the regularity of the solution to the direct problem. Then, we ingeniously employ the generalized fractional Grönwall inequality, Sobolev embedding, and combine the statistical characteristics of the outward normal derivative of the weak solution on open subdomain at the boundary to achieve accurate recovery of the stochastic space-time source terms and prove the uniqueness of the space deterministic source term. Furthermore, by constructing a contraction mapping and exploiting the Banach fixed point theorem, we establish the uniqueness of the potential. Afterward, using the statistical characteristics of the solution at the terminal time, we establish the stability of the potential. Finally, leveraging the representation of the mild solution and the asymptotic properties of the Mittag-Leffler function, we examine the uniqueness and stability of fractional order at known terminal time. In scenario involving an unknown terminal time, we derive the uniqueness and stability of the terminal time.

Smoothing effects and extinction in finite time for fractional fast diffusions on Riemannian manifolds

Abstract:We study nonnegative solutions to the Cauchy problem for the Fractional Fast Diffusion Equation on a suitable class of connected, noncompact Riemannian manifolds. This parabolic equation is both singular and nonlocal: the diffusion is driven by the (spectral) fractional Laplacian on the manifold, while the nonlinearity is a concave power makes the diffusion singular, so that solutions lose mass and may extinguish in finite time. Existence of mild solutions follows by nowadays standard nonlinear semigroups techniques, and we use these solutions as the building blocks for a more general class of so-called weak dual solutions, which allow for data both in the usual $L^1$ space and in a larger weighted space, determined in terms of the fractional Green function. We focus in particular on a priori smoothing estimates (also in weighted $L^p$ spaces) for a quite large class of weak dual solutions. We also show pointwise lower bounds for solutions, showing in particular that solutions have infinite speed of propagation. Finally, we start the study of how solutions extinguish in finite time, providing suitable sharp extinction rates.

Abstract:This article deals with a simultaneous reconstruction of unknown initial conditions and space-dependent source function in multi-order time-fractional diffusion problems. We discuss the existence and uniqueness of the direct problem. The problem is presented as a regularized optimization problem and converted into a variational problem. The existence of the minimizer for the optimization problem is demonstrated. For the numerical part, a modified Levenberg-Marquardt regularization approach is constructed to identify the initial condition and source function. Several numerical examples in one and two dimensions are employed to test the performance of the identification technique.

Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to study the Cauchy problem for nonlinear differential equations of fractional order containing the weighted Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative of a function with respect to another function. The equivalence of this problem and a nonlinear Volterra-type integral equation of the second kind have been presented. In addition, the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the considered Cauchy problem are proved using Banach's fixed point theorem and the method of successive approximations. Finally, we obtain a new estimate of the weighted Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative of a function with respect to functions at their extreme points. With the assistance of the estimate obtained, we develop the comparison theorems of fractional differential inequalities, strict as well as nonstrict, involving weighted Riemann-Liouville differential operators of a function with respect to functions of order $ \delta $, $ 0 < \delta < 1 $.

Abstract:In this article, for a two dimensional fractional diffusion equation, we study an inverse problem for simultaneous restoration of the fractional order and the source term from the sparse boundary measurements. By the adjoint system corresponding to our diffusion equation, we construct useful quantitative relation between unknowns and measurements. From Laplace transform and the knowledge in complex analysis, the uniqueness theorem is proved.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study time-fractional pseudo-parabolic type equations generated by the Dunkl operator. The forward problem is considered and its well-posedness is established. In particular, a prior estimates are obtained in the Sobolev type spaces and, explicit formulas for solutions of the problems are derived. Here we also deal with the left-sided Caputo fractional time derivative. As an application, we investigate an inverse source problem. Existence and uniqueness of the solution is proved. Moreover, we show that a solution pair is continuously depending on the initial and additional data, finalizing with a numerical test.
