Abstract:Hybridization of distinct materials into a single nanoplatform is relevant to advance material’s properties for functional application such as biosensor platform. We report the synthesis and characterization of nanosheets of graphene oxide decorated with hybrid nanoparticles of silver-ruthenium bipyridine complex (Ag@[Ru(bpy)3]2+) core and chitosan shell. Hybrid nanoparticles were first obtained through a sequential wet-chemical approach using in situ reduction, electrostatic and coordination reaction. Oxygenated functional groups of graphene oxide and abundant amine groups of chitosan layer on the surface of hybrid nanoparticles allowed the functionalization reaction. Changes in intrinsic optical, chemical and structural properties of graphene oxide due to hybrid nanoparticles were studied in depth using spectroscopic techniques and an electron microscope. Electrodes modified with nanosheets of graphene oxide-hybrid nanoparticles retain the biocompatibility and displayed an amplified redox property suitable for a broad range of sensing studies.
Layer-by-layer Chitosan-Decorated Pristine Graphene on Screen-Printed Electrodes by One-Step Electrodeposition for Non-Enzymatic Hydrogen Peroxide Sensor

Abstract:Layer-by-layer chitosan-decorated pristine graphene on screen-printed electrodes was achieved by one-step electrodeposition method and an enzyme-free hydrogen peroxide electrochemical biosensor was fabricated for its application. Negatively charged pristine graphene absorbed with positively charged chitosan by electrostatic interactions was electrodeposited on the electrodes. The successful immobilization of pristine graphene was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical characterizations. The graphene-chitosan volume ratio and cyclic voltammetry scan cycles during the electrodeposition process were optimized. The resulting hydrogen peroxide biosensors showed a 178 times improved sensitivity and exhibited two wide linear detection ranges from 20 μM to 20 mM and from 20 mM to 60 mM. The biosensors also showed a good reproducibility, stability, selectivity and could be used in real samples detection. The superior electrochemical performance of graphene-chitosan was attributed to the preservation of excellent properties of pristine graphene, and the formation of layer-by-layer structure with high surface area. The proposed strategy of direct immobilization of pristine graphene can be extended for the immobilization of other nanomaterials and biomolecules.
Sonochemical and sustainable synthesis of graphene-gold (G-Au) nanocomposites for enzymeless and selective electrochemical detection of nitric oxide

Abstract:In this study, a sonochemical approach was utilised for the development of graphene-gold (G-Au) nanocomposite. Through the sonochemical method, simultaneous exfoliation of graphite and the reduction of gold chloride occurs to produce highly crystalline G-Au nanocomposite. The in situ growth of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) took place on the surface of exfoliated few-layer graphene sheets. The G-Au nanocomposite was characterised by UV-vis, XRD, FTIR, TEM, XPS and Raman spectroscopy techniques. This G-Au nanocomposite was used to modify glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to fabricate an electrochemical sensor for the selective detection of nitric oxide (NO), a critical cancer biomarker. G-Au modified GCE exhibited an enhanced electrocatalytic response towards the oxidation of NO as compared to other control electrodes. The electrochemical detection of NO was investigated by linear sweep voltammetry analysis, utilising the G-Au modified GCE in a linear range of 10-5000μM which exhibited a limit of detection of 0.04μM (S/N=3). Furthermore, this enzyme-free G-Au/GCE exhibited an excellent selectivity towards NO in the presence of interferences. The synergistic effect of graphene and AuNPs, which facilitated exceptional electron-transfer processes between the electrolyte and the GCE thereby improving the sensing performance of the fabricated G-Au modified electrode with stable and reproducible responses. This G-Au nanocomposite introduces a new electrode material in the sensitive and selective detection of NO, a prominent biomarker of cancer.

Abstract:We investigate a high-sensitivity surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor consisting of a Au layer, four-layer MoS2, and monolayer graphene. The numerical simulations, by the transfer matrix method (TMM), demonstrate the sensor has a maximum sensitivity of 282°/RIU, which is approximately 2 times greater than the conventional Au-based SPR sensor. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) indicates that the presence of MoS2 film generates a strong surface electric field and enhances the sensitivity of the proposed SPR sensor. In addition, the influence of the number of MoS2 layers on the sensitivity of the proposed sensor is investigated by simulations and experiments. In the experiment, MoS2 and graphene films are transferred on the Au-based substrate by the PMMA-based wet transfer method, and the fabricated samples are characterized by Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, the fabricated sensors with the Kretschmann configuration are used to detect okadaic acid (OA). The okadaic acid–bovine serum albumin bioconjugate (OA-BSA) is immobilized on the graphene layer of the sensors to develop a competitive inhibition immunoassay. The results show that the sensor has a very low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.18 ng/mL for OA, which is about 22.6 times lower than that of a conventional Au biosensor. We believe that such a high-sensitivity SPR biosensor has potential applications for clinical diagnosis and immunoassays.
Phase-transfer-assisted synthesis of cysteine-Ag nanoparticles/graphene oxide nanocomposite and its enhanced performance in antibiosis and biosensing

Abstract:We report a facile, rapid, phase-transfer-assisted process to prepare Ag nanoparticles (AgNP) loaded graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposite, by using cysteine as a highly-effective phase transfer agent for AgNP movement from organic phase to water and subsequently as a covalent linkage for immobilizing AgNP on GO. The obtained c-Ag/GO nanocomposite possesses high nanoparticle loading efficiency, small particle size and monodispersity, strong binding force and good water dispersibility, which endow it with great potential in a variety of bio-applications. To illustrate potentail application, c-Ag/GO and its derivatives c-Ag/rGO were used for antibiosis and biosensing, respectively. The c-Ag/GO composite demonstrates high antibacterial activity against E. coli with a minimal bactericidal concentration of 10 μg ml−1. The biosensor based on c-Ag/rGO exhibits rapid and sensitive response for uric acid detection with a detection limit of 0.025 μM, a sensitivity of 5.76 μA mM−1 and a wide linear range of 0.025 ~ 2250 μM. The comparative analysis with relevant nanocomposites also reveals the precedence of c-Ag/GO in these applications, thus highlighting the advantages of the developed preparation method for c-Ag/GO.

Abstract:Currently, electrochemical sensors are in the process of being developed and widely used in various fields, and new materials are being explored to enhance the precision and selectivity of the sensors. The Fe/graphene nanoparticles were synthesized utilizing a green approach, wherein leaf extract was employed as the reducing agent. The resulting materials underwent comprehensive characterization utilizing a range of contemporary techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy. The findings of the study revealed that the nanocomposites of Fe/graphene/porphyrin comprised zero‐valent iron nanoparticles, exhibiting an average particle size ranging from 15 to 60 nm. These nanoparticles were seen to be evenly dispersed across the graphene sheets. The presence of nanostructure porphyrin nanofibers, measuring 20 nm in diameter, was also shown to exhibit strong integration with the surface of the Fe/graphene nanomaterials. The electrochemical properties of the Fe/graphene/porphyrin nanocomposite were also investigated, demonstrating that the prepared material could be effectively employed as a sensing electrode in the electrochemical sensor for detecting Chloramphenicol (CAP) through CV, EIS, and DPV techniques using a three‐electrode electrochemical system. Under optimal conditions, Fe/graphene/porphyrin exhibited a high current response when detecting CAPs.

Abstract:A novel reduced graphene oxide (rGO) decorated organic binol based receptor ((S)-1) has been designed and synthesized. The resulting nanocomposite (rGO-(S)-1) material was then utilized as a selective fluorescent chemosensor for Ag+ ion in aqueous media at physiological pH. In addition, the nanocomposite showed no cross-reaction with any of the potential interfering metal ions. The reduced graphene oxide-organic nanocomposite was characterized using various spectroscopic, microscopic and analytical studies.

Abstract:Functionalized nanocomposites based on various type of graphene nanomaterials including graphene, graphene oxides (GOs), and doped graphene (oxides) are widely used as materials for various sensors that can display high sensitivity, selectivity and stability. This review with 347 references summarizes advances in the preparation and functionalization of graphene nanocomposites for the application of electrochemical sensors and biosensors. Following a general introduction into the field, the article is divided into subsections on (a) the synthesis and functionalization of nanocomposites (made from graphene, various kinds of GOs, heteroatom-doped GOs), (b) on methods for functionalization of composites (with other carbon nanomaterials, metal nanoparticles, metal oxide and metal sulfide nanoparticles), (c) on functionalization with inorganic materials including polyoxometalates, hexacyanoferrates, minerals), (d) on functionalization with organic materials such as amino acids, surfactants, organic dyes, ionic liquids, macrocycles (including cyclodextrins, crown ethers and calixarenes), and (e) on functionalization with organometallics and with various other organic compounds, (f) on functionalizations with polymers such as conventional polymers, polyelectrolytes, conducting polymers, molecularly imprinted polymers, (g) on functionalization with biomolecules including proteins and nucleic acids. Abstract:Noble metal nanoparticle-3D graphene hybrid nanocomposites possess the advantage of nanoparticles and graphene, which have attracted extensive interest. Here we developed a one-step laser induction method to prepare various noble metal nanoparticle-3D graphene nanocomposites. The nanocomposites were converted from polyimide film coated with the corresponding metal precursor-chitosan hydrogel ink. These nanoparticles including gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs), were evenly distributed on the surface of porous 3D graphene. Furthermore, we prepared an AuNPs-3D graphene interdigitated array electrode using the one-step laser induction method, which was used to fabricate a flexible impedimetric immunosensor for the detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7. The immunosensor shows excellent performance including low detection limit, high selectivity, and great flexibility.

Abstract:The work presents the synthesis and characterization of a Palladium/Silver Modified Reduced Graphene Oxide‐Nanocomposite platform for various Electrochemical Sensors. It details the development a nanohybrid material by successful incorporation of palladium and silver nanoparticles into reduced graphene oxide. Advanced spectroscopic and microscopic analyses highlight the nanohybrid′s structure, stability and enhanced durability. The platform ensurs long‐term reliability and repeatability of performance. Metal nanoparticles incorporated into carbon nanostructures have tremendous applications in the field of nanosensors and other technologies. Herein, a nanohybrid of reduced graphene oxide modified with silver and/or palladium nanoparticles (Ag/Pd/rGO) was prepared by impregnation of Pd and Ag into the rGO platform and deposited on a glass carbon electrode. Palladium and silver nanoparticles improve the stability and durability of the sensor platform by preventing the agglomeration of graphene oxide sheets and providing chemical stability against environmental factors. This ensures long‐term reliability and repeatability of the sensor performance. The morphologies and microstructures of the as‐prepared nanohybrid were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, UV–visible and infrared spectroscopy. The average crystallite size of PdAgNPs was found to be between 12 and 15 nm and demonstrated good dispersion across reduced graphene oxide sheets with high‐loading capacities. Thorough investigation of the electrochemical properties of the nanomaterial surfaces through cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments, revealed distinct redox peaks for Ag+/Ag0 and Pd2+/Pd0 processes and demonstrated the excellent electrochemical properties of the prepared nanocomposites. The rGO‐PdAgNPs‐GCE had a diffusion coefficient value of 1.14×10−14 cm2 s−1 which is acceptable for electrochemical sensors as it is indicative of a fast response time and enhanced sensitivity to changes in gas concentration. The results obtained through thorough characterizations contributes to the novelty of the research by offering a deeper understanding of the material properties and the potential of the nanohybrid material for a broad application scope.

Abstract:This research aims to characterize the conductivity of synthesized silver-decorated with graphene oxide (Ag-GO) as a new material that offers better performance in electrochemical sensors. Graphene oxide (GO) was produced using a modified Hummer’s method and then decorated with silver nanoparticles to produce Ag-GO. The samples were analyzed using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Raman analysis, while conductivity was calculated using impedance spectroscopy. The FESEM imagery showed the difference in the structure between GO and Ag-GO, with the Ag-GO presenting white particles on top of the GO structure. The presence of these particles was confirmed by the EDX spectra, which also showed the weight percentages of the silver nanoparticles. The XRD spectra demonstrated the crystallinity of the sample before and after the silver nanoparticles were added to the GO. Raman spectroscopy revealed detailed information on the samples with the appearance of the 1578 G band and 1342 D band of GO. Finally, the conductivity increased to 3.67 x 10-10 S cm-1 when 60 mg of silver nanoparticles were added to the samples.

Green synthesis of Ag and Au NPs decorated rGO nanocomposite for high impedimetric electrochemical sensor as well as enhanced antimicrobial performance against foodborne pathogens

Abstract:In the present study, Allium cepa L. leaves extract mediated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) decorated reduced graphene oxide (Ag/Au/rGO NC's) were synthesized and demonstrated their biological and electrochemical sensing applications. Interestingly, the synthesis of AgNPs and AuNPs was achieved rapidly within 1 h and 4 h, respectively. Whereas the production of both reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and Ag/Au/rGO NC's was achieved at 96 h. The achieved results from the UV-Vis spectrum of 432 nm for AgNPs and 550 nm of AuNPs and the shifting of the characteristic GO absorption band of 230 nm into 270 nm as well as an absence of 305 nm confirmed the rGO synthesis. In addition, HR-XRD analyses confirmed the JCPDS file No. 04-0783 and 01-1174 pertaining to Ag and Au NPs. Further, the Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR and EDS analyses confirmed the evidence of nanomaterials biosynthesis. A polydisperse, spherical shaped average size AgNPs of 1 to 30 nm, spherical and triangular shaped AuNPs with an average size of 1 to 120 nm, and silk like appearance of a thin layered graphene sheet in rGO were observed through TEM. Also, the recorded results evident the uniform decoration of Ag and Au NPs into the rGO sheet. The electrochemical properties of as-synthesized materials were studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques. Interestingly, the Ag/Au/rGO NC's modified electrode exhibited higher electrical conductivity and good electrocatalytic properties towards the electrooxidation of nitrite in a neutral medium than other nanomaterials. Eventually, Ag/Au/rGO NC's confirmed the enhanced antibacterial against Gram-negative bacteria and dose dependent antifungal inhibitory activities against foodborne fungal pathogens of Fusarium graminearum , Alternaria alternata, and phytopathogenic fungus of Curvularia lunata and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum at the maximum tested conc. of 2 mg/ml, compared to other nanomaterials. From the result of zebrafish embryotoxicity (ZET), the highest toxicity was observed for AgNPs at 0.19 μg/ml. But in the case of Ag/Au/rGO NC's the reduced toxicity was observed. Hence, the achieved results concluded the Ag/Au/rGO NC's could be suitable for development of both as biomaterials for biomedical and effective sensors for environmental applications.

Abstract:Biosensors with high sensitivity, selectivity and a low limit of detection, reaching nano/picomolar concentrations of biomolecules, are important to the medical sciences and healthcare industry for evaluating physiological and metabolic parameters. Over the last decade, different nanomaterials have been exploited to design highly efficient biosensors for the detection of analyte biomolecules. The discovery of graphene has spectacularly accelerated research on fabricating low-cost electrode materials because of its unique physical properties, including high specific surface area, high carrier mobility, high electrical conductivity, flexibility, and optical transparency. Graphene and its oxygenated derivatives, including graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), are becoming an important class of nanomaterials in the field of biosensors. The presence of oxygenated functional groups makes GO nanosheets strongly hydrophilic, facilitating chemical functionalization. Graphene, GO and rGO nanosheets can be easily combined with various types of inorganic nanoparticles, including metals, metal oxides, semiconducting nanoparticles, quantum dots, organic polymers and biomolecules, to create a diverse range of graphene-based nanocomposites with enhanced sensitivity for biosensor applications. This review summarizes the advances in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based nanocomposites as emerging electrochemical and fluorescent biosensing platforms for the detection of a wide range of biomolecules with enhanced sensitivity, selectivity and a low limit of detection. The biofunctionalization and nanocomposite formation processes of graphene-based materials and their unique properties, surface functionalization, enzyme immobilization strategies, covalent immobilization, physical adsorption, biointeractions and direct electron transfer (DET) processes are discussed in connection with the design and fabrication of biosensors. The enzymatic and nonenzymatic reactions on graphene-based nanocomposite surfaces for glucose- and cholesterol-related electrochemical biosensors are analyzed. This review covers a very broad range of graphene-based electrochemical and fluorescent biosensors for the detection of glucose, cholesterol, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nucleic acids (DNA/RNA), genes, enzymes, cofactors nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA), uric acid (UA), cancer biomarkers, pathogenic microorganisms, food toxins, toxic heavy metal ions, mycotoxins, and pesticides. The sensitivity and selectivity of graphene-based electrochemical and fluorescent biosensors are also examined with respect to interfering analytes present in biological systems. Finally, the future outlook for the development of graphene based biosensing technology is outlined.

Graphene also possesses a variety of promising electrochemical properties, such as a wide potential window, low charge-transfer resistance, high electrocatalytic activity and fast electron transfer rate. Furthermore, chemically modified graphene materials, particu-larly graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), can be produced in a large scale and at low costs. They have good processability and can be assembled, blended or fabricated into macroscopic electrode materials with controlled compo-sitions and microstructures. Thus, graphene and its chemically modified derivatives are unique and attractive electrode materials for electrochemical biosensing. For example, GO is a chemically modified graphene and an important precursor of graphene. GO sheets have a large amount of carboxyl groups at their edges, which can be used to covalently immobilize en-zymes, realizing the detection of biomolecules. GO can also enhance the direct charge transfer of protein because of its irre-versible adsorption to protein and abundant catalytic sites. However, the oxygen functional groups of GO heavily destroy the conjugated planes of graphene sheets, decreasing the electrical property and limiting the practical applications of GO. Chemical, electrochemical, or thermal reduction can partly restore the conjugated structure, converting GO to conductive rGO. On the other hand, graphene is a material with zero band gap. Doping graphene with heteroatoms can modulate its band gap and improve its electrocatalytic properties. Graphene materials also frequently have to be blended with other functional materials to improve their dispersibility and processibility, enhance their electrochemical activity and/or selectivity. This review will summarize the recent research achievements in electrochemical biosensing based on the electrodes modified with pristine graphene ( e.g . GO, rGO, and doped graphene) or graphene composites with biomolecules, polymers, ionic liquids, metal and metal oxide nanoparticles. A perspective of developments in this research field is also provided.
Graphene-assisted Dual Amplification Strategy for the Fabrication of Sensitive Amperometric Immunosensor

Abstract:A sensitive electrochemical immunosensor with graphene-assisted signal amplification has been developed. In order to construct the base of the immunosensor, a novel hybrid architecture was initially fabricated by combining poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) functionalized graphene nanosheets (PDDA-G) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) via a simple sonication-induced assembly. The formed hybrid architecture provided an effective matrix for antibody immobilization with good stability and bioactivity. Subsequently, a smart, multilabel, and graphene-based nanoprobe that contains gold nanoparticles functionalized exfoliated graphene oxide and horseradish peroxidase-secondary antibodies was designed for constructing a novel sandwiched electrochemical immunosensor. Enhanced sensitivity was obtained by combining the advantages of high-binding capability and excellent electrical conductivity of hybrid architecture with the multilabel signal amplification. On the basis of the dual signal amplification strategy of graphene-based architecture and the multilabel, the immunosensor displayed excellent analytical performance for the detection of human IgG (HIgG) range from 0.1 to 200ng/mL with a detection limit of 0.05ng/mL at 3σ. Moreover, the proposed method showed good precision, acceptable stability and reproducibility, and could be used for the detection of HIgG in real samples. Therefore, the present strategy definitely paves a way for the wide application of graphene in clinical research.
Impedimetric Immunosensor Based on Gold Nanoparticles Modified Graphene Paper for Label-Free Detection of Escherichia Coli O157:H7.

Abstract:In this study, a low-cost and robust impedimetric immunosensor based on gold nanoparticles modified free-standing graphene paper electrode for rapid and sensitive detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) was developed. Graphene paper was prepared by chemical reduction of graphene oxide paper obtained from vacuum filtration method. Scanning electron microscope, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques were employed to investigate the surface morphology and crystal structure of the prepared graphene paper. The gold nanoparticles were grown on the surface of graphene paper electrode by one-step electrodeposition technique. The immobilization of anti-E. coli O157:H7 antibodies on paper electrode were performed via biotin-streptavidin system. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to detect E. coli O157:H7 captured on the paper electrode. Results show that the developed paper immunosensor possesses greatly enhanced sensing performance, such as wide linear range (1.5 × 10(2)-1.5 × 10(7) cfu mL(-1)), low detection limit (1.5 × 10(2) cfu mL(-1)), and excellent specificity. Furthermore, flexible test demonstrate the graphene paper based sensing device has high tolerability to mechanical stress. The strategy of structurally integrating metal nanomaterials, graphene paper, and biorecognition molecules would provide new insight into design of flexible immunosensors for routine sensing applications.

Abstract:A novel and sensitive sandwich immunosensor for amperometric determination of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was designed using Au nanoparticles-titanium dioxide-graphene (AuNPs-TiO2-graphene) nanocomposites. Dopamine-functionalized graphene was firstly prepared by π-stacking interaction, and TiO2 was then attached to the surface of dopamine-graphene by the specificity and high affinity of enediol ligands to Ti (IV). Afterwards, AuNPs-TiO2-graphene nanocomposites were synthesized with photo-reduction approach under ultraviolet irradiation. The morphology and conductivity of the as-prepared nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray powder diffraction, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Taking the advantage of large specific surface area and excellent biocompatibility, AuNPs could covalently link horseradish peroxidase labeled secondary antibody (HRP-Ab2) through the interaction between AuNPs and mercapto or primary amine groups of HRP-Ab2 for sandwich-type immunosensor construction. Under optimum conditions, the modified electrode exhibited a linear current response to CEA concentration in a wide range of 0.005-200ngmL-1 (R2 = 0.994) with low detection limit of 3.33pgmL-1 (S/N = 3).

Abstract:Graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs) have abundant oxygen-containing functional groups and exhibit the improved dispersibility and biocompatibility. Unzipping of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was used for the fabrication of GONRs in this work. A glassy carbon electrode modified with GONRs and gold nanoparticles, GCE/GONRs-AuNPs, was prepared via a two-step approach and it exerted a high catalytic activity for the electrochemical oxidation of SO32- and NO2-. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the sensitive electrochemical detection of SO32- and NO2- was realized. The developed sensor exhibited a good selectivity, excellent reproducibility, satisfactory stability and high accuracy.
