Abstract:Metformin, the widely recognized Biguinide, is a Guinide derivative derived from Galegine, which was historically extracted from a plant named Gallega officinalis. [ 1–3 ] It is used for treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), whose incidence is increasing yearly. According to the International Diabetes Federation Diabetes Atlas, nearly half a billion patients are diagnosed with diabetes worldwide, placing a substantial burden on individuals and healthcare systems. [ 4 ] Metformin has been, and remains, the first line treatment for T2DM with supportive evidence-based guidelines from relevant authorities, namely the American Diabetes Association and the National Institute for Clinical and Health Excellence.
