Abstract:We propose a scheme of quantum computation with nonlinear quantum optics. Polarization states of photons are used for qubits. Photons with different frequencies represent different qubits. Single qubit rotation operation is implemented through optical elements like the Faraday polarization rotator. Photons are separated into different optical paths, or merged into a single optical path using dichromatic mirrors. The controlled-NOT gate between two qubits is implemented by the proper combination of parametric up and down conversions. This scheme has the following features: (1) No auxiliary qubits are required in the controlled-NOT gate operation; (2) No measurement is required in the course of the computation; (3) It is resource efficient and conceptually simple.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to prepare the Bell states for atomic qubits trapped in separate optical cavities via atom-cavity-laser interaction. The quantum information of each qubit is encoded on the degenerate ground states of the atom, so the entanglement between them is relatively stable against spontaneous emission. The proposed scheme consists of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with two arms, and each arm contains a cavity with an N-type atom in it. It requires two classical fields and a single-photon source. By controlling the sequence and time of atom-cavity-laser interaction, the deterministic production of the atomic Bell states is shown. We also introduce the generalization of the present scheme to generate the 2N-atom Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state.
Multi-qubit quantum state preparation enabled by topology optimization

Abstract:Using topology optimization, we inverse-design nanophotonic cavities enabling the preparation of pure states of pairs and triples of quantum emitters. Our devices involve moderate values of the dielectric constant, operate under continuous laser driving, and yield fidelities to the target (Bell and W) states approaching unity for distant qubits (several natural wavelengths apart). In the fidelity optimization procedure, our algorithm generates entanglement by maximizing the dissipative coupling between the emitters, which allows the formation of multipartite pure steady states in the driven-dissipative dynamics of the system. Our findings open the way towards the efficient and fast preparation of multiqubit quantum states with engineered features, with potential applications for nonclassical light generation, quantum simulation, and quantum sensing.

Abstract:In this paper we describe and thoroughly discuss three reported experiments in quantum optics (QO) involving interferometers and non-linear crystals. We show that by using a graphical method and an over-simplified model of the parametric down-conversion process, we arrive to explain all the important results reported in the respective papers. Indistinguishability is discussed in the case of separable/non-separable (i.e. entangled) quantum systems and our interpretation is sometimes at variance with the one given by the authors reporting the experiments.

Abstract:This work explores the possibility of creating and controlling unconventional nonlinearities by periodic driving, in a broad class of systems described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). By means of a parent quantum many-body description, we demonstrate that such driven systems are well captured by an effective NLSE with emergent nonlinearities, which can be finely controlled by tuning the driving sequence. We first consider a general class of two-mode nonlinear systems - relevant to optical Kerr cavities, waveguides and Bose-Einstein condensates - where we find an emergent four-wave mixing nonlinearity, which originates from pair-hopping processes in the parent quantum picture. Tuning this drive-induced nonlinearity is shown to modify the phase-space topology, which can be detected through relative population and phase measurements. We then couple individual (two-mode) dimers in view of designing extended lattice models with unconventional nonlinearities and controllable pair-hopping processes. Following this general dimerization construction, we obtain an effective lattice model with drive-induced interactions, whose ground-state exhibits orbital order, chiral currents and emergent magnetic fluxes through the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. We analyze these intriguing properties both in the weakly-interacting (mean-field) regime, captured by the effective NLSE, and in the strongly-correlated quantum regime. Our general approach opens a route for the engineering of unconventional optical nonlinearities in photonic devices and controllable drive-induced interactions in ultracold quantum matter.

Abstract:Strong nonlinear interactions between photons enable logic operations for both classical and quantum-information technology. Unfortunately, nonlinear interactions are usually feeble and therefore all-optical logic gates tend to be inefficient. A quantum emitter deterministically coupled to a propagating mode fundamentally changes the situation, since each photon inevitably interacts with the emitter, and highly correlated many-photon states may be created . Here we show that a single quantum dot in a photonic-crystal waveguide can be utilized as a giant nonlinearity sensitive at the single-photon level. The nonlinear response is revealed from the intensity and quantum statistics of the scattered photons, and contains contributions from an entangled photon-photon bound state. The quantum nonlinearity will find immediate applications for deterministic Bell-state measurements and single-photon transistors and paves the way to scalable waveguide-based photonic quantum-computing architectures.

Abstract:This paper presents our experimental work on preparing and manipulating quantum entangled states in optical quantum information processing systems. The main contents are: (1) Using continuous wave (CW) laser beam to pump nonlinear crystals we successfully prepared two-photon polarization entangled states with high brightness and entanglement degree, and it is tunable in entanglement degree and we use this source to produce one kind of important mixed states-Wemer states with tunableentanglement fraction in it. (2) We realized the 1→2 qubits Buzek-Hillery cloning machine with linear optical devices and showed that the fidelities between the two output qubits and the original qubit are both 5/6 for arbitrary input pure states. (3) We presented a method to test the maximal violation of the CHSH inequality for non-maximally entangled pure states and experimentally realized it with our entangled state source. (4) We perform an all-or-nothing-type Kochen-Specker experiment to verify whether non-contextual hidden variables (NCHV) or quantum mechanics is right. The results strongly agree with quantum mechanics.
Optimal State Manipulation for a Two-Qubit System Driven by Coherent and Incoherent Controls

Abstract:Optimal control of two-qubit quantum systems attracts high interest due to applications ranging from two-qubit gate generation to optimization of receiver for transferring coherence matrices along spin chains. State preparation and manipulation is among important tasks to study for such systems. Typically coherent control, e.g. a shaped laser pulse, is used to manipulate two-qubit systems. However, the environment can also be used $\unicode{x2013}$ as an incoherent control resource. In this article, we consider optimal state manipulation for a two-qubit system whose dynamics is governed by the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad master equation, where coherent control enters into the Hamiltonian and incoherent control into both the Hamiltonian (via Lamb shift) and the superoperator of dissipation. We exploit two physically different classes of interaction with coherent control and optimize the Hilbert-Schmidt overlap between final and target density matrices, including optimization of its steering to a given value. We find the conditions when zero coherent and incoherent controls satisfy the Pontryagin maximum principle, and in addition, when they form a stationary point of the objective functional. Moreover, we find a case when this stationary point provides the globally minimal value of the overlap. Using upper and lower bounds for the overlap, we develop one- and two-step gradient projection methods operating with functional controls.

Abstract:We introduce a general mapping for encoding quantum communication protocols involving pure states of multiple qubits, unitary transformations, and projective measurements into another set of protocols that employ coherent states of light in a superposition of optical modes, linear optics transformations and measurements with single-photon threshold detectors. This provides a general framework for transforming protocols in quantum communication into a form in which they can be implemented with current technology. We explore the similarity between properties of the original qubit protocols and the coherent-state protocols obtained from the mapping and make use of the mapping to construct new protocols in the context of quantum communication complexity and quantum digital signatures. Our results have the potential of bringing a wide class of quantum communication protocols closer to their experimental demonstration.

Abstract:A simple and flexible scheme for high-dimensional linear quantum operations is demonstrated on optical discrete spatial modes in the transverse plane. Quantum-state tomography via symmetric informationally complete positive-operator-valued measures and quantum Fourier transformation are implemented with dimensionality of 15. The statistical fidelity of symmetric informationally complete positive-operator-valued measures and the fidelity of quantum-state tomography are approximately 0.97 and up to 0.853, respectively, while the matrix fidelity of quantum Fourier transformation is 0.85. We believe that our approach has the potential for further exploration of high-dimensional spatial entanglement provided by spontaneous parametric down-conversion in nonlinear crystals.

Abstract:We analyze the optically driven dynamics of a qubit implemented on a singlet-triplet subspace of two-electron states in a self-assembled quantum dot molecule. We study two possible control schemes based on the coupling to an excited (four-particle) state either by two spectrally separated laser pulses or by a single spectrally broad pulse. We quantitatively characterize the imperfections of the qubit operation resulting from nonadiabatic evolution and from limited spectral selectivity in a real system, as compared to the ideal adiabatic Raman transfer of occupation in the Λ system. Next, we study the effects of decoherence induced by the coupling to the phonons of the surrounding crystal lattice and by radiative recombination. As a result, we are able to identify the optimization trade-offs between different sources of errors and indicate the most favorable conditions for quantum control of the singlet-triplet qubit in the two optical control schemes. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.106.125308 ©2022 American Physical Society

Exploring entanglement dynamics in an optomechanical cavity with a type- V qutrit and quantized two-mode field

Abstract:In this work, the main objective is to measure the degree of interaction of a type- V qutrit with a two-mode quantized field in an optomechanical cavity. To achieve this objective, we first deduce the Hamiltonian in the interaction picture to identify the oscillatory terms. Using the Coarse-Grained Method (CGM), we obtain the effective Hamiltonian analytically. By selecting initial conditions for the atom, the two-mode field, and the moving mirror, we can determine the state vector of the entire system through a first-order approximation of the effective Hamiltonian. With this information, we proceed to solve the Schrödinger equation, generating a coupled set of differential equations that is solved numerically based on the initial conditions. In this context, the atomic von Neumann entropy allows us to obtain the temporal evolution of the degree of entanglement of the qutrit in the cavity and the atomic population inversion. The results indicate that entanglement in this tripartite system, composed of the qutrit and the mirror-field subsystems, as well as the population inversion, can be manipulated by the initial state conditions of the system, the qutrit-field and mirror-field coupling coefficients, the pump field, and the dissipation rates of the two-mode field and the movable mirror, respectively.

Abstract:By exploiting the fermionic qubit parity measurement, we present a scheme to realize quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement of Bell states and generate n-party GHZ state in quantum dot. Compared with the original protocol, the required electron transfer before and after parity measurement can be nonadiabatic, which may speed up the operation speed and make the omitting of spin-orbit interaction more reasonable. This may help us to construct CNOT gate without highly precise control of coupling as the way of D. Gottesman and I. L. Chuang.

Abstract:Nonlinear interactions between single quantum particles are at the heart of any quantum information system, including analog quantum simulation and fault-tolerant quantum computing. This remains a particularly difficult problem for photonic qubits, as photons do not interact with each other. While engineering light-matter interaction can effectively create photon-photon interaction, the required photon number to observe any nonlinearity is very high, where any quantum mechanical signature disappears. However, with emerging low-dimensional materials, and engineered photonic resonators, the photon number can be potentially reduced to reach the quantum nonlinear optical regime. In this review paper, we discuss different mechanisms exploited in solid-state platforms to attain quantum nonlinear optics. We review emerging materials and optical resonator architecture with different dimensionalities. We also present new research directions and open problems in this field.

Abstract:The efficient initialization of a quantum system is a prerequisite for quantum technological applications. Here we show that several classes of quantum states of a harmonic oscillator can be efficiently prepared by means of a Jaynes-Cummings interaction with a single two-level system. This is achieved by suitably tailoring external fields which drive the dipole and/or the oscillator. The time-dependent dynamics that leads to the target state is identified by means of Optimal Control Theory (OCT) based on Krotov's method. Infidelities below $10^{-4}$ can be reached for the parameters of the experiment of the ENS group in Paris, where the oscillator is a mode of a high-Q microwave cavity and the dipole is a Rydberg transition of an atom. For this specific situation we analyze the limitations on the fidelity due to parameter fluctuations and identify robust dynamics based on pulses found using ensemble OCT. Our analysis can be extended to quantum-state preparation of continuous-variable systems in other platforms, such as trapped ions and circuit QED.

Abstract:Nonlinear mean field dynamics enables quantum information processing operations that are impossible in linear one-particle quantum mechanics. In this approach, a register of bosonic qubits (such as neutral atoms or polaritons) is initialized into a symmetric product state through condensation, then subsequently controlled by varying the qubit-qubit interaction. We propose an experimental implementation of quantum state discrimination, an important subroutine in quantum computation, with a toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate. The condensed bosons here are atoms, each in the same superposition of angular momenta 0 and 1, encoding a qubit. A nice feature of the protocol is that only readout of individual quantized circulation states (not superpositions) is required.
