Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based formulation development is a promising approach for facilitating the drug product development process. AI is a versatile tool that contains multiple algorithms that can be applied in various circumstances. Solid dosage forms, represented by tablets, capsules, powder, granules, etc., are among the most widely used administration methods. During the product development process, multiple factors including critical material attributes (CMAs) and processing parameters can affect product properties, such as dissolution rates, physical and chemical stabilities, particle size distribution, and the aerosol performance of the dry powder. However, the conventional trial-and-error approach for product development is inefficient, laborious, and time-consuming. AI has been recently recognized as an emerging and cutting-edge tool for pharmaceutical formulation development which has gained much attention. This review provides the following insights: (1) a general introduction of AI in the pharmaceutical sciences and principal guidance from the regulatory agencies, (2) approaches to generating a database for solid dosage formulations, (3) insight on data preparation and processing, (4) a brief introduction to and comparisons of AI algorithms, and (5) information on applications and case studies of AI as applied to solid dosage forms. In addition, the powerful technique known as deep learning-based image analytics will be discussed along with its pharmaceutical applications. By applying emerging AI technology, scientists and researchers can better understand and predict the properties of drug formulations to facilitate more efficient drug product development processes.

The AI technology is used in each step of the drug designing procedure, which decreases the health hazards related to preclinical trials and also reduces the cost substantially. The AI is an effective tool for data mining based on the huge pharmacological data and machine learning process. Hence, AI has been used in de novo drug design, activity scoring, virtual screening and in silico evaluation in the properties (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity) of a drug molecule. Various pharmaceutical companies have teamed up with AI companies for faster progress in the field of drug development, along with the healthcare system. Abstract:Abstract Background Pharmaceutical excipient development is an extensive process requiring a series of pre-formulation studies to evaluate their performance. The present study compares the conventional compaction and compression pre-formulation studies with artificial intelligence (AI) modeling to predict the performances of thermally and chemically modified starches obtained from Livingstone potato. Results The native starch was modified by three methods, and we obtained the following starches; pregelatinized starch (PS), ethanol dehydrated pregelatinized starch (ES), and acid hydrolyzed starch (AS). Microcrystalline cellulose (Avicel® PH101) was employed as a reference since its use in tablet direct compression has been established. The role of compaction pressure on the degree of volume reduction of the tablets was studied using Kawakita and Heckel models which highlighted that when the starch is modified by pregelatinization followed by ethanol dehydration, and/and or acid hydrolysis modification, a directly compressible starch can be obtained that can plastically deform. The data-intelligence results indicated the reliability of the AI-based models over the linear models. Hence, the comparative results demonstrated that the Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) outperformed the other two models in modeling the performance of all of the four excipients with considerable performance accuracy. Conclusion The compressibility indices have shown matching characteristics of AS and ES to Avicel® PH101 in terms of direct compressibility potential than PS. Moreover, the data intelligence modeling demonstrates the reliability and satisfactory of ANFIS as a hybrid model over the other two models with increased performance skills in modeling the compaction properties of these novel pharmaceutical excipients.

In this manuscript, we have discussed some of the major applications of AI in the pharmaceutical sector. Abstract:The end-to-end process in the discovery of drugs involves therapeutic candidate identification, validation of identified targets, identification of hit compound series, lead identification and optimization, characterization, and formulation and development. The process is lengthy, expensive, tedious, and inefficient, with a large attrition rate for novel drug discovery. Today, the pharmaceutical industry is focused on improving the drug discovery process. Finding and selecting acceptable drug candidates effectively can significantly impact the price and profitability of new medications. Aside from the cost, there is a need to reduce the end-to-end process time, limiting the number of experiments at various stages. To achieve this, artificial intelligence (AI) has been utilized at various stages of drug discovery. The present study aims to identify the recent work that has developed AI-based models at various stages of drug discovery, identify the stages that need more concern, present the taxonomy of AI methods in drug discovery, and provide research opportunities. From January 2016 to September 1, 2023, the study identified all publications that were cited in the electronic databases including Scopus, NCBI PubMed, MEDLINE, Anthropology Plus, Embase, APA PsycInfo, SOCIndex, and CINAHL. Utilising a standardized form, data were extracted, and presented possible research prospects based on the analysis of the extracted data.

Abstract:Currently, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) are gaining increased interest in many fields, particularly in pharmaceutical research and development, where they assist in decision-making in complex situations. Numerous research studies and advancements have demonstrated how these computational technologies are used in various pharmaceutical research and development aspects, including drug discovery, personalized medicine, drug formulation, optimization, predictions, drug interactions, pharmacokinetics/ pharmacodynamics, quality control/quality assurance, and manufacturing processes. Using advanced modeling techniques, these computational technologies can enhance efficiency and accuracy, handle complex data, and facilitate novel discoveries within minutes. Furthermore, these technologies offer several advantages over conventional statistics. They allow for pattern recognition from complex datasets, and the models, typically developed from data-driven algorithms, can predict a given outcome (model output) from a set of features (model inputs). Additionally, this review discusses emerging trends and provides perspectives on the application of AI with quality by design (QbD) and the future role of AI in this field. Ethical and regulatory considerations associated with integrating AI into pharmaceutical technology were also examined. Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science that involves acquiring information, developing rule bases, and mimicking human behaviour. The fundamental concept behind AI is to create intelligent computer systems that can operate with minimal human intervention or without any intervention at all. These rule-based systems are developed using various machine learning and deep learning models, enabling them to solve complex problems. AI is integrated with these models to learn, understand, and analyse provided data. The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping numerous industries, with the pharmaceutical sector experiencing a notable transformation. AI is increasingly being employed to automate, optimize, and personalize various facets of the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in pharmacological research. Traditional drug development methods areknown for being time-consuming, expensive, and less efficient, often taking around a decade and costing billions of dollars. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques addresses these challenges by enabling the examination of compounds with desired properties from a vast pool of input drugs. Furthermore, it plays a crucial role in drug screening by predicting toxicity, bioactivity, ADME properties (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion), physicochemical properties, and more. AI enhances the drug design process by improving the efficiency and accuracy of predicting drug behaviour, interactions, and properties. These approaches further significantly improve the precision of drug discovery processes and decrease clinical trial costs leading to the development of more effective drugs.

This review paper highlights AI's benefits for disease detection, clinical trials, medicine development, and productivity in the pharmaceutical industry. Pharmaceutical companies have built specialized systems to help doctors diagnose and monitor medication remediation. Pharmaceutical businesses are utilizing AI for machine learning to imitate human analytical processes for more accurate and insightful data. AI has many benefits for the pharmaceutical business. Data analysis can address previously insoluble problems due to improved precision. AI boosts productivity, lowers expenses, and enhances tasks. AI insights enhance understanding of user behavior, market performance, and clinical trial success. AI helps identify patients during clinical trials and improves antiviral detection to ensure efficacy, safety, cost-effectiveness, and seamless pharmaceutical procedures. The pharmaceutical industry emphasizes AI in R&D, drug discovery, diagnostics, sickness prevention, epidemic forecasting, remote access, manufacturing, and marketing. Artificial intelligence has transformed medication development and discovery by analyzing vast datasets, discovering complicated patterns, and forecasting efficacy. Pharmaceutical companies like Novartis, AstraZeneca, and Verge Genomics are utilizing AI for drug feature prediction, neurological evaluation, therapy development, pulmonary and hypertension recognition, low-cost medication production, and disease diagnosis.

Abstract:Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) is a discipline within the field of computer science that encompasses the development and utilization of machines capable of emulating human behavior, particularly regarding the astute examination and interpretation of data. AI operates through the utilization of specialized algorithms, and it includes techniques such as deep (DL), and machine learning (ML), and natural language processing (NLP). As a result, AI has found its application in the study of pharmaceutical chemistry and healthcare. The AI models employed encompass a spectrum of methodologies, including unsupervised clustering techniques applied to drugs or patients to discern potential drug compounds or appropriate patient cohorts. Additionally, supervised ML methodologies are utilized to enhance the efficacy of therapeutic drug monitoring. Further, AI-aided prediction of the clinical outcomes of clinical trials can improve efficiency by prioritizing therapeutic intervention that are likely to succeed, hence benefiting the patient. AI may also help create personalized treatments by locating potential intervention targets and assessing their efficacy. Hence, this review provides insights into recent advances in the application of AI and different tools used in the field of pharmaceutical medicine.
