Abstract:Vanadium flow battery (VFB) has received tremendous attention because of its advantages such as long lifespan, easy to scale and flexible operation. Fabricating novel electrodes with high power density and wide operating temperature is critical to promote the practical application of VFB for all-climate energy storage. In this work, we describe a well-controlled method to prepare holey-engineered porous graphite felt (PGF) electrodes, in which nanosized pores are evenly distributed on the microscale graphite fibers of the graphite felt. Owing to its excellent electrolyte wettability and greatly enhanced surface area, the as-prepared PGF electrode exhibits high electrochemical activity towards VO2+/VO2+ and V2+/V3+ redox couples. As a result, the VFB single cell assembled with PGF electrodes demonstrates outstanding rate performance under current density up to 300mAcm−2. The resulting PGF electrode also exhibits superior long-term stability over 3000 charging-discharging cycles at a high current density of 150mAcm−2, and wide temperature adaptability from − 20°C to 60°C.

Simulation of the Effects of Electrode Parameters on All-Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Performance

Abstract:In order to study the all-vanadium redox flow battery(VFB), a mechanistic model is developed based on the transport and reactions to simulate the effects of various electrode parameters on the battery's overall performance and internal polarizations for a VFB charged at isothermal and steady state. The parameters included the carbon felt's geometry structure parameters(thickness Lt, Compression ratio CR), electrical parameters(specific surface area a, electric conductivity σs) and operating parameter(charging current density i). Numerical simulations showed that when Lt increased from 1.5 mm to 3.5 mm, the terminal voltage drop is 3 mV only; when CR increased from 0.1 to 0.5, the terminal voltage drop is 16 mV; when a increased from 3.5×104 m2m–3 to 3.5×106 m2m–3, the terminal voltage drop is 30 mV; wheneff–1s increased from 18.9 Sm to 164.4 Sm–1, the terminal voltage drop is 87 mV, and results also showed different two-dimensional over-potential distribution characteristics under different σseff ; when i increased from 100 mAcm–2 to 150 mAcm–2, the terminalvoltage increase is 57 mV, if proportionally increased a, the terminal voltage increase is 46 mV only. Based on the terminal voltage and the over-potential distribution, the reasons for the effects of various parameters on the battery performance are discussed. The experimental validation showed similar results, which proved the reliability of the numerical simulation. Increasing CR, a and σseffwill significantly improve the battery performance. This should provide guidance to parameter design and to improve the performance of electrode material, and the improving of battery performances.

Abstract:The vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) has become a highly favored energy storage system due to its long life, safety, environmental friendliness, and scalability. However, the inherently problematic properties of the electrode have hindered the widespread application of VRFB technology. Therefore, understanding the progress of electrode modification research is critical to advance the development of the high-performance VRFB. This review highlights the potential challenges of carbon electrodes for VRFB applications, including poor hydrophilicity, low reactivity, and high mass transfer resistance. It reviews recent advances in modification research addressing these three aspects, reveals the critical influencing factors on each particular challenge, and describes the mechanism of influence of each key factor. It provides a reference for developing and applying VRFB technology. Finally, some practical suggestions and prospects are provided for the future development of the VRFB.

Abstract:Due to the pressing need for harnessing renewable energy, sizable energy storage technologies have become increasingly critical, among which vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) are considered as one of the promising technologies. However, the lack of high-performance electrodes hinders the development of VRFBs. Herein, we report a new ammonia plasma-treated WO3@carbon felt as a high-performance electrode for VRFBs. The ammonia plasma introduces not only N-contained functional groups but also oxygen deficiencies on WO3, which provide additional active sites and improve the conductivity, leading to high catalysis for both cathodic and anodic vanadium redoxes. As a result, the energy efficiency and the power density of the VRFB increase from 78.9% to 86% and from 365.5 mWcm[Formula: see text] to 389.6 mWcm[Formula: see text], respectively. Moreover, the energy efficiency of composite electrodes remains stable for more than 300 cycles. This study provides a new strategy for designing cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and high-performance electrodes for future VRFBs.

Abstract:In order to promote the applicability of redox flow batteries (RFBs), the deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been proposed as a better choice for non-aqueous electrolyte of RFBs. The reactive transfer process within the RFB plays a key role in determining the cell performance. In this work, cyclic voltammetry experiment is conducted to obtain the reactive transfer property parameters of iron and vanadium ions in ethaline DES electrolyte. Then, a lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) model is utilized to reveal the reactive transfer mechanism of vanadium-iron RFB with DES electrolyte at the pore-scale. The numerical results present the influences of porous electrode morphology and DES electrolyte transfer properties on the performance of vanadium-iron RFB during galvanostatic discharging. This work suggests that the porous electrodes with the lower porosity and smaller fibre diameter lead to a more sufficient depletion time of reactant in DES electrolyte under the galvanostatic discharging and a given pumping power condition. Meanwhile, the larger fibre diameter yields the more widespread pore size distribution, resulting in the more apparent non-uniformity of local current density into the porous electrode. In addition, the results show the similar state of charge(SOC) in the cathode and anode under the same flow condition. By contrast, the absolute value of overpotential in the anode is significantly higher than that in the cathode. Furthermore, the reactive transfer process of this DES electrolyte-based vanadium-iron RFB is compared to all vanadium RFB with aqueous electrolyte under the galvanostatic discharging.

Abstract:The vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is one of the promising large-scale energy storage technologies. The electrode is one of the key components of the VRFB, and its design has an important effect on its electrochemical redox kinetics and battery performance. The ideal VRFB electrode material has high catalytic activity, good conductivity, and high stability. Carbon-based electrodes are the most commonly used electrode materials for VRFBs. However, its reaction kinetics and catalytic active sites are low. This paper summarizes the methods of carbon-based electrode modification of the electrochemical performance in VRFBs. Three representative methods including metal/metal oxide modification, nonmetal atom modification, and defect engineering for graphite felt in VRFBs are generally reviewed. First, metal and metal oxides have high catalytic activity, which can enhance the chemical reaction process of vanadium ions and greatly improve the reversibility of the redox reaction of vanadium ions. Then, nonmetal atom modification can generally improve the hydrophilicity of carbon-based electrodes, enhance the adsorption/desorption capacity of vanadium ions, and improve the reaction kinetics. Moreover, defect engineering can lead to the formation of the micropore structure on the surface and increase the specific surface area of the material, thus generating more redox reaction active sites. Finally, the development direction of electrode modification in VRFBs is prospected, and it is expected that this review will provide useful insights into the development of VRFBs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:In order to develop intermittent renewable energy sources, the development of energy storage systems (ESSs) has become a research hotspot, but high capital and operating costs remain their main drawbacks. Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) have emerged as promising large-scale electrochemical EESs due to their environmental friendliness, persistent durability, and commercial value advantages. Significant efforts have been devoted to VRFB electrode modification to improve their economic applicability and electrochemical performance while retaining environmental friendliness. In this review, the progress of VRFBs' electrode treatment is summarized from the practical perspective. Considering the commercial prospects, this review provides an overview of these treatments for VRFB electrodes in terms of environmental friendliness, economic applicability, and electrochemical performance, which can be referred to as the "3Es". The advantages and disadvantages of each processing method are analyzed with "3Es" as the standard, which provides a reference for the large-scale commercialization process of VRFBs. In the end, practical recommendations are put forward on the relationship between the development plan and the objectives of VRFB. Electrode modification of VRFB with "3Es".

Herein, we report the use of highly active ceria–zirconia mixed oxide decorated graphite felt (CexZr1−xO2/GF) electrodes in combination with a high proton-selective sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membrane to achieve efficient and inexpensive VFB. CexZr1−xO2 electrocatalysts can improve the electrolyte wettability and electrochemical activity of the GF electrode towards VO2+/VO2+ and V2+/V3+ redox couples, leading to remarkably enhanced voltage efficiency (VE) of VFB. On the other hand, SPEEK membrane can effectively suppress the crossover of vanadium ions, resulting in greatly improved coulombic efficiency (CE) of VFB. As a result, the CexZr1−xO2/GF-SPEEK combination demonstrates superior battery efficiencies (CE, VE and EE) and cycling stability to the traditional GF-Nafion combination. Meanwhile, since hydrocarbon-based SPEEK membrane is much cheaper than commercial Nafion membrane, the cost of VFB is also significantly reduced.

Abstract:Mappings of |ipa|, |ipc|, |∆E|, |ipc/ipa| and the onset potential of hydrogen evolution side reaction for three different electrodes. Vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) face a challenge with the low reaction rates of the V(II)/V(III) redox couple, which limits the performance of VFBs. Additionally, the negative electrode in VFBs is often accompanied by the persistent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which is difficult to eliminate. Therefore, understanding the spatial distribution of activity on the negative electrode and the HER side reaction on the electrode surface is of critical importance. This study proposes a weak measurement imaging method to characterize the spatial distribution of surface activity and HER onset potential on the negative electrode in VFBs). This method enables the visualization and in situ detection of key parameters such as the absolute values of |ipa|, |ipc|, |∆E|, |ipc/ipa|, and the HER onset potential. By comparing three different types of graphite felts with varying activity levels, it validates the feasibility of this method. Furthermore, electrochemical stability tests are conducted to study the electrodes repeatability, uniformity, and durability. This method holds promise in guiding the design of electrodes with enhanced activity, good reversibility, minimized HER side reactions, and uniform distribution.

Abstract:All-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), as a large energy storage battery, has aroused great concern of scholars at home and abroad. The electrolyte, as the active material of VRFB, has been the research focus. The preparation technology of electrolyte is an extremely important part of VRFB, and it is the key to commercial application of VRFB. In this work, the preparation methods of VRFB electrolyte are reviewed, with emphasis on chemical reduction, electrolysis, solvent extraction and ion exchange resin. The principles, technological processes, advantages and disadvantages of each method are briefly described. The effects of different additives on high concentration electrolyte are also introduced. Abstract:The vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) has been regarded as one of the best potential stationary electrochemical storage systems for its design flexibility, long cycle life, high efficiency, and high safety; it is usually utilized to resolve the fluctuations and intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. As one of the critical components of VRFBs to provide the reaction sites for redox couples, an ideal electrode should possess excellent chemical and electrochemical stability, conductivity, and a low price, as well as good reaction kinetics, hydrophilicity, and electrochemical activity, in order to satisfy the requirements for high-performance VRFBs. However, the most commonly used electrode material, a carbonous felt electrode, such as graphite felt (GF) or carbon felt (CF), suffers from relatively inferior kinetic reversibility and poor catalytic activity toward the V2+/V3+ and VO2+/VO2+ redox couples, limiting the operation of VRFBs at low current density. Therefore, modified carbon substrates have been extensively investigated to improve vanadium redox reactions. Here, we give a brief review of recent progress in the modification methods of carbonous felt electrodes, such as surface treatment, the deposition of low-cost metal oxides, the doping of nonmetal elements, and complexation with nanostructured carbon materials. Thus, we give new insights into the relationships between the structure and the electrochemical performance, and provide some perspectives for the future development of VRFBs. Through a comprehensive analysis, it is found that the increase in the surface area and active sites are two decisive factors that enhance the performance of carbonous felt electrodes. Based on the varied structural and electrochemical characterizations, the relationship between the surface nature and electrochemical activity, as well as the mechanism of the modified carbon felt electrodes, is also discussed.

Abstract:Fabricating cost effective and high-performance electrodes is essential to the development of vanadium flow battery (VFB). Moreover, improving the stability of electrodes in acidic electrolyte remains key issues. In this work, we describe a simple method to prepare novel electrodes composed of N-doped carbon nanospheres (NCS) grown on graphite felt (GF) fibers. Dopamine monomers are used as both carbon and nitrogen source. Physical and electrochemical results reveal that the as-prepared NCS/GF electrode exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity as well as wettability for vanadium ion redox reactions. The single cell tests at current densities of 50–300mAcm−2 demonstrate superior battery performance in terms of energy efficiency and capacity retention. Exceptional durability of the NCS catalyst is confirmed by long-term cycles at a higher current density of 150mAcm−2. NCS/GF electrode also shows excellent temperature adaptability from −15°C to 50°C. The facile approach reported in this study can pave a new route to fabricate high-performance electrodes for VFB.

Abstract:Two methods for detecting the state of charge of all-vanadium redox flowing battery have been discussed.One is connecting positive or negative electrolyte in battery with ion-exchange membrane by using a certain SOC(State Of Charge) positive electrolyte as reference,graphite rods as electrode,and constructing a battery.The SOC can be determined through detecting potential of this battery referencing standard potential curve.Another is connecting the negative electrolyte and the positive electrolyte bypass with ion-exchange membrane,graphite rods as electrode,detecting potential between these two electrodes.SOC can be attained by interpolating the potential into the potential vs.SOC.Combining these two methods could make great work on safely and efficiently operating VRB.

Abstract:The electrolyte flow states of all vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) have direct effect on the battery performance and life. To reveal the electrolyte distribution in the battery, the computation fluid dynamics (CFD) method was used to simulate the flow field and a battery cold-flow model experiment was carried out to confirm the simulated results. The results show that the predicted information agreed well with the experimental results. The electrolyte has a concentrated distribution in the central region of parallel flow field. The dead band rate is 25.8%. The disturbed flow and vortex flow areas mainly appear in the inlet and outlet regions and the materials in these regions should improve the anti-corrosion performance. The square field has an advantage over the rectangle on the industrial scale to improve the electrolyte distribution. The higher flux of electrolyte is able to stabilize the distributions and to reduce the impact of flow irregularity to improve the battery performance.

Abstract:Electrode kinetics are crucial to electrochemical performance of vanadium flow battery. However, existing studies on electrode kinetics are mostly performed in ex-situ conditions based on planar electrodes, so the obtained rate constant can neither reflect the kinetics in practically used porous electrode nor be used to predict the activation polarizations of a real flow cell. To address this limitation, an in-situ measurement of electrode kinetics in porous electrode is conducted in this study by a symmetrical cell design for vanadium flow battery. For both V2+/V3+ and VO2+/VO2+ couples, the activation polarization as a function of current density is firstly acquired on the symmetrical cell through measurements of polarization curve, high frequency resistance and local mass transfer coefficient, followed by Tafel fitting that yields both rate constant and transfer coefficient. Based on kinetic parameters of both V2+/V3+ and VO2+/VO2+, the simulated full cell activation polarizations coincide well with the full cell experimental result. By further comparing to simulation results using reported kinetic parameters determined from planar electrodes, the reliability of the proposed method is further highlighted. The electrode evaluation is much more involved than Tafel polarization and stack design is not treated in this contribution.

Abstract:A vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) represents the most commercially advanced and mature technology among redox flow batteries presently available. However, the catalytic activity of the original electrode material significantly hinders the energy efficiency of the vanadium ion redox reactions. Therefore, improving the electrodes is imperative to enhance the performance of the battery. VRFB commercialization is facilitated by the utilization of bifunctional electrodes acquired through in situ modification techniques. This approach enhances the performance of both the positive and negative electrodes, thereby increasing the efficiency of the battery. This study provides a summary of research concerning bifunctional electrodes acquired through in situ modification, including acid treatment, electrochemical treatment, heat treatment, and some novel methods. Furthermore, the application and challenges associated with bifunctional electrodes in VRFB are also outlined. This review concludes with a perspective on the future trajectory of VRFB development, elucidating the direction of its commercial advancement.
