Abstract:This study explores the limitations of TiO2 as a photocatalyst, focusing on its narrow bandwidth and high electron-hole complexation probabilities that restrict its applications. A novel one-pot synthesis method for TiO2/hydrochar matrix composites is presented, with variations achieved through control of hydrothermal temperature, time, and loading concentration. The efficacy of these composites in ammonia removal is investigated, revealing optimal performance for the composite denoted as 3Ti-160-7, synthesized with a titanium salt concentration of 0.3 mol L-1, a hydrothermal temperature of 160 degrees C, and a hydrothermal time of 7 hours. Comparative analyses with commercial TiO2 (P25) and hydrochar demonstrate superior performance of 3Ti-160-7, exhibiting significantly lower ammonia concentration and reduced NO and NO2 concentrations. This research underscores the cost-effectiveness and application potential of TiO2/hydrochar matrix composites, offering valuable insights for the enhancement of photocatalytic activity and broader applicability in addressing TiO2-related challenges.
Facile fabrication of hollow biochar carbon-doped TiO2/CuO composites for the photocatalytic degradation of ammonia nitrogen from aqueous solution

Abstract:Ammonia nitrogen contaminated wastewater poses a great threat on the safety of water resources. In this work, a series of hollow tubular structure TiO2/hemp stem biochar carbon (HSC) and TiO2-CuO/HSC were successfully fabricated under different calcination temperature and were used as catalysts for the degradation of ammonia nitrogen from aqueous solution. The morphologies and structures of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method and UV–vis−DRS spectroscopy (DRS) technique. The effects of the different calcination temperature, the dosage of catalyst, the pH on the ammonia solution, and contact time on the degradation process were investigated. In addition, the comparison of ammonia removal efficiency under sunlight and UV-light were studied, and the degradation mechanism was also discussed. The result indicates that those of as-prepared TiO2/HSC and TiO2-CuO/HSC show excellent photocatalytic activity. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposites can be attributed to the high specific surface area and the reduction of electron-hole pair recombination because of the introduction of HSC and copper oxide. In addition, the removal efficiency of ammonia reached 99.7% under UV light while degraded about of 60.7% under sunlight with TiO2-CuO/HSC. The reusing capability and stability of catalysts were studied, and the results demonstrated that the as-prepared composites showed high stability and excellent recycling performance in aqueous reaction systems. The prepared catalysts are promising for the degradation of ammonia nitrogen from wastewater.

Abstract:In this study, the biochar obtained from waste cotton fibers was introduced into the Ag-doped g-C3N4/TiO2 hybrid composite through a facile one-step hydrothermal process. The morphology, elemental composition, crystal structure, microstructure, specific surface area, chemical bonding state, energy band structure, and separation efficiency of photoinduced charge carriers of the resultant composite were examined using scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, surface area analyzer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscope, and photoluminescence spectroscope. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics of the biochar, Ag-doped g-C3N4/TiO2 and Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 were evaluated using the model methyl orange dye. The photoacatalytic degradation of the model pollutants including methyl orange, methylene blue, congo red, and tetracycline hydrochloride and the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) ions were also assessed under visible light. Experimental results indicated that the photocatalytic property of the Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 was significantly enhanced through the adsorption enhancement compared with the Ag-doped g-C3N4/TiO2. This was due to the uniform doping of multi-scale porous biochar with g-C3N4 nanosheet, Ag and TiO2 nanoparticles. The adsorptive enhancement induced by the biochar resulted in the narrowed band gap, suitable electronic energy band structure, and fast separation of photoinduced charge carriers of the Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2, which was probably due to the coexistence of multi-valence Ti+4/+3 and Ag0/+1 species and oxygen-containing groups of biochar. The major reactive species of the Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 were 1O2 and h+. The MO dye adsorption onto the Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 followed the Langmuir isotherm model, pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, and the adsorption process was an endothermic reaction with entropy reduction effects. As such, the Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 exhibited a promising application for the treatment of wastewater containing multi-pollutants especially organic dyes and heavy metal ions.

Optimization of Photothermal Catalytic Reaction of Ethyl Acetate and NO Catalyzed by Biochar-Supported MnOx-TiO2 Catalysts

Abstract:The substitution of ethyl acetate for ammonia in NH3-SCR provides a novel strategy for the simultaneous removal of VOCs and NO. In this study, three distinct types of biochar were fabricated through pyrolysis at 700 °C. MnOx and TiO2 were sequentially loaded onto these biochar substrates via a hydrothermal process, yielding a family of biochar-based catalysts with optimized dosages. Upon exposure to xenon lamp irradiation at 240 °C, the biochar catalyst designated as 700-12-3GN, derived from Ginkgo shells, demonstrated the highest catalytic activity when contrasted with its counterparts prepared from moso bamboo and loofah. The conversion efficiencies for NO and ethyl acetate (EA) peaked at 73.66% and 62.09%, respectively, at a catalyst loading of 300 mg. The characterization results indicate that the 700-12-3GN catalyst exhibits superior activity, which can be attributed to the higher concentration of Mn4+ and Ti4+ species, along with its superior redox properties and suitable elemental distribution. Notably, the 700-12-3GN catalyst has the smallest specific surface area but the largest pore volume and average BJH pore size, indicating that the specific surface area is not the predominant factor affecting catalyst performance. Instead, pore volume and average BJH pore diameter appear to be the more influential parameters. This research provides a reference and prospect for the resource utilization of biochar and the development of photothermal co-catalytic ethyl acetate and NO at low cost.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have become one of the primary air pollutants, causing severe harm to the environment and human health. This study combines the biochar adsorption with TiO2 photocatalytic technology to realize the integration of adsorption-photocatalytic degradation of VOCs. The results show that the specific surface area of the biochar-nano TiO2 cross-linked structure increases by 660.53 m(2)/g compared with TiO2, and the particle size of TiO2 in the cross-linked structure decreases from 11.10 nm to 9.59 nm. There are chemical bonds between biochar and nano TiO2, including the Ti-C bond and N-Ti-O structure. The removal rate of toluene by the biochar-nano TiO2 cross-linked structure is higher than the sum of the adsorption removal rate of biochar and the photocatalytic degradation rate of TiO2, with a synergy coefficient of 10.45. The absorption capacity of light and visible light is enhanced, and the photocatalytic oxidation efficiency is improved. This study with crucial guiding significance for removing VOCs has elucidated the cross-linking and synergistic mechanism between biochar and nano TiO2.
Nitrogen-Doped TiO2/Nitrogen-Containing Biochar Composite Catalyst As a Photocatalytic Material for the Decontamination of Aqueous Organic Pollutants

Abstract:In this study, a waste walnut shell-derived biochar enriched with nitrogen (N-biochar) is mixed with nitrogen-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2) to fulfill an affordable composite material for the degradation of methyl orange (MO). Results showed that porous structure and oxygen-containing functional groups of biochar facilitate contact with MO during the reaction process. Meanwhile, doped nitrogen has a positive effect on improving the reaction activity due to the existence of a substituted state and a gap state in the catalyst. It was revealed that the N-TiO2/N-biochar (NCNT0.2/1) exhibited better photocatalytic degradation efficiency (97.6%) and mineralization rate (85.4%) of MO than that of TiO2, N-TiO2, and TiO2/N-biochar due to its stronger synergistic effect of N, TiO2, and biochar, in accordance with its high charge separation by photoluminescence (PL) analysis. Trapping experiments showed that ·OH is the predominant active species during the decolorization and mineralization process of MO. After five repeated use, the loss of activity of the catalyst was negligible. In addition, the catalytic degradation process was consistent with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model with the rate constant of 4.02 × 10–2 min–1.
Enhancing activity and non-deactivating stability on N-modified TiO 2 catalyst for visible-light photocatalytic oxidation of ammonia at room temperature

Abstract:Nitrogen modified TiO 2 catalysts (N-TiO 2 (1)) with high photocatalytic activity and non-deactivating stability were prepared by using urea as nitrogen source. Its efficiency of photocatalytic oxidation of NH 3 (NH 3 -PCO) remained above 80 %, peaking at 88 % at room temperature over 72 h, while N 2 selectivity also improved noticeably, stabilizing at approximately 87.1 %. Conversely, the NH 3 conversion on pure TiO 2 plateaued at approximately 67 % within 72 h, peaking at only 72.8 %, with nitrogen selectivity not exceeding 55 %. N element was successfully doped into TiO 2 lattice system in the form of O-Ti-N, which reduced the band gap energy from 3.18 eV to 3.07 eV and improved the light utilization rate. The water molecules formed during the reaction contribute to the in-situ reaction to continually generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH), thereby conferring greater reaction stability. By-products NO x - and NO x are formed during the reaction process, while NO x will be also converted to N 2 by initial selective catalytic reduction (i-SCR) mechanism. These findings present a novel perspective for enhancing the stability of NH 3 -PCO active agents and have substantial applications within the parameters of air pollution control.

Photocatalytic behavior of biochar-modified carbon nitride with enriched visible-light reactivity

Abstract:Ultra-thin layered structures and modified bandgaps are two efficient strategies to increase the photocatalytic performance of various materials for the semiconductor industry. In the present study, we combined both strategies in one material to form carbon-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nano-layered structures by the method of melamine thermal condensation, in the presence of different mass ratios of biochar. The characterization showed that the composite with the best ratio retained the g-C3N4 polymeric framework and the bond with g-C3N4. The biochar was established via π-π stacking interactions and ether bond bridges. The π-conjugated electron systems provided from biochar can elevate charge separation efficiency. The ultra-thin structure also curtailed the distance of photogenerated electrons migrating to the surface and enlarge specific surface area of materials. The presence of carbon narrowed the bandgap and increased light absorption at a wider range of wavelengths of g-C3N4. The biochar/melamine ratio of 1:15 presented the best performance, 2.8 and 5 times faster than g-C3N4 degradating Rhodamine and Methyl Orange, respectively. Moreover, the catalyst presented a good stability for 4 cycles. In addition to that, biochar from waste biomass can be considered a sustainable, cost-effective, and efficient option to modify g-C3N4-based photocatalysts.
Silver nanoparticle-loaded graphitic carbon nitride/multiwall carbon nanotube composite with improved denitrification to nitrogen gas for the photocatalytic removal of aqueous ammonia nitrogen

Abstract:Ammonia nitrogen (TAN) accumulated in the hydrosphere is an undesired nitrogen pollution and poses a great threat to both the ecological environment and human health. Its removal from water by the photocatalyst directly using solar energy is of strong interest in environmental remediation. In this study, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was combined with multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and loaded with silver nanoparticles (Ag(NPs)) to hydrothermally synthesize a photocatalytic composite (Ag(NP)-(g-C3N4)/CNT) with a high catalytic efficiency. Characterization analyses indicated even deposition of Ag(NPs) onto (g-C3N4)/CNT composite by photochemical reduction and the increased photoresponse property compared with raw g-C3N4 and TiO 2-based materials. The photocatalysis of the composite was evaluated in terms of different Ag(NP) weight ratios, light intensities, photocatalyst dosages, solution pH values and light types. Results showed that a strong alkaline system induced a higher photocatalytic removal of TAN. The TAN removal ratio and rate constant at the optimal pH of 11 were 11.3 and 44.3 times those at a pH of 7. Compared with the process using g-C3N4 alone (dosage = 0.5 g/L, initial TAN = 2.0 mg/L, pH = 11, Ag(NP)=1.0 wt%), Ag(NP)-(g-C3N4)/CNT composite had effectively increased TAN removal and N2 conversion ratios from 42.5% and 3.7% to 88.2% and 78.7 % upon 6-h Xe lamp irradiation (180 mW/cm 2). Ag(NP)-(g-C3N4)/CNT composite also exhibited satisfactory stability in cyclical TAN removal. Moreover, the mechanisms of TAN removal were analyzed. This study highlights the application of the Ag(NP)-(g-C3N4)/CNT composite as a potential method for ammonia removal in environmental remediation.

Improved Photocatalytic Conversion of High-Concentration Ammonia in Water by Low-Cost Cu/TiO2 and Its Mechanism Study

Abstract:Platinized TiO2 (Pt/TiO2) as a benchmark photocatalyst shows superior photocatalytic performance in environmental remediation. In order to reduce the cost of photocatalyst for practical use, a series of cooper loaded TiO2 (Cu/TiO2) photocatalysts were prepared by photoreduction method and compared with pure TiO2 and Pt/TiO2 in terms of overall ammonia conversion efficiency and selective oxidation. The as-prepared Cu/TiO2 samples were characterized and analyzed by physicochemical instrumental measurements. The results show that about 60% Cu2+ ions in suspension can be photodeposited onto the surface of TiO2 under UV light irradiation, and is mainly composed by a mixture of Cu/Cu+. The Cu/P25 (0.3 wt% Cu) sample was screened out as the optimal photocatalyst, via photoilluminance spectra analysis and photocatalytic oxidation of ammonia. It shows even better performance compared to Pt/TiO2 in the oxidation of high concentration of ammonia, due to the strong coordination effect by Cu(NH3)(n) complex formation. Through Electron Spin Resonance (EPR) analysis, and free radical suppression experiments, the active oxidative species account for ammonia oxidation and selective product generation were analyzed, and the possible reaction mechanisms involving photocatalytic ammonia conversion were proposed. (OH)-O-center dot has been identified as the main oxidant that affects the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen, whereas O-2(center dot-) mainly affects the production of N-2 and h(+) is mainly responsible for the production of NO3 center dot-. These results indicate that Cu/TiO2 could be used as a low-cost and efficient photocatalyst in pretreatment process for conversion of high concentration of ammonia in wastewater. Biochar Nanoparticles over TiO2 Nanotube Arrays: A Green Co-Catalyst to Boost the Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Abstract:Biochar nanoparticles (BC NPs), produced by low temperature pyrolysis (350 °C) of microalgae (Nannochloropsis sp.) and nutshells, are proposed as low-cost and sustainable co-catalysts to promote the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanotube (NT) arrays towards the degradation of methylene blue (MB) used as an organic pollutant model molecule. BC NPs (size < 25 nm) were obtained by treating bulk BC (i.e., biomass after pyrolysis) by sonication–centrifugation cycles in a water solution. The filtered BC NPs dispersion was deposited by simple drop-casting on the TiO2 NT support. The BC loading was varied by performing multiple depositions. Photocatalytic experiments under UV light (365 nm) revealed that the decoration with BC NPs significantly improves the TiO2 photoactivity. Such enhancement is mainly influenced by the amount of BC deposited; upon optimizing the BC deposition conditions, the rate of photocatalytic degradation of MB increases approximately three times with respect to bare TiO2, almost irrespective of the nature of the raw material. The greater photocatalytic activity of BC-TiO2 can be attributed to the synergistic combination of reactant/product adsorption and catalytic degradation of the adsorbed organic pollutant, as well as an improved charge carrier separation and electron transfer.

Abstract:The removal of ammonia (NH3) emitted from agricultural and industrial activities is of great significance to protect human health and ecological environment. Photocatalytic NH3 oxidation to N2 under mild conditions is a promising strategy. However, developing visible light photocatalysts for NH3 oxidation is still in its infancy. Here, we fabricate N-TiO2 and Ag/AgCl/N-TiO2 photocatalysts by sol-gel and photodeposition methods, respectively. The introduction of N not only endows TiO2 with visible light response (absorption edge at 460 nm) but also results in the formation of heterophase junction (anatase and rutile). Thus, N-TiO2 shows 2.0 and 1.8 times higher than those over anatase TiO2 and commercial TiO2 for NH3 oxidation under full spectrum irradiation. Meanwhile, surface modification of Ag can simultaneously enhance visible light absorption (generating localized surface plasmon resonance effect) and charge separation efficiency. Therefore, the photocatalytic activity of Ag/AgCl/N-TiO2 is further improved. Furthermore, the presence of N and Ag also enhances the selectivity of N2 product owing to the change of reaction pathway. This work simultaneously regulates photocatalytic conversion efficiency and product selectivity, providing some guidance for developing highly efficient photocatalysts for NH3 elimination.

Abstract:Three types of raw biochar (i.e. CBC, OBC, PBC produced from cornstalk, orange peel and peanut hull, respectively) and the modified ones (i.e., KMnO4-, KOH- and H3PO4-treatment) were employed to activate H2O2 for the removal of tetracycline (TC). The effects of pyrolysis temperatures, H2O2 concentration and initial pH were examined. TC removal by raw biochars w/o H2O2 was dependent on the feedstock and pyrolysis temperature of biochar, but the removal efficiency was still quite low under optimum conditions. The KMnO4-treatment significantly enhanced the adsorption of TC on all three biochars, but only enhanced the TC removal by CBC + H2O2. The KOH-treatment had insignificant effect on the adsorption of TC on biochar, but improved the performance of CBC/PBC + H2O2. The H3PO4-treatment had a negative impact on TC removal by biochar w/o H2O2. Overall, H2O2 could either enhance or decrease the TC removal by biochar, depending on biochar type, H2O2 concentration and solution pH.
Rational Design of High-Concentration Ti3+ in Porous Carbon-Doped TiO2 Nanosheets for Efficient Photocatalytic Ammonia Synthesis

Abstract:Photocatalytic ammonia synthesis is exciting but quite challenging with a very moderate yield at present. One of the greatest challenges is to develop highly active centers in a photocatalyst for N2 reduction under ambient conditions. Herein, porous carbon-doped anatase TiOx (C-TiOx ) nanosheets with high-concentration active sites of Ti3+ are presented, which are produced by layered Ti3 SiC2 through a reproducible bottom-up approach. It is shown that the high-concentration Ti3+ sites are the major species for the significant increase in N2 photoreduction activity by the C-TiOx . Such bottom-up substitutional doping of C into TiO2 is responsible for both visible absorption and generation of Ti3+ concentration. Together with the porous nanosheets morphology and the loading of a Ru/RuO2 nanosized cocatalyst for enhanced charge separation and transfer, the optimal C-TiOx with a Ti3+ /Ti4+ ratio of 72.1% shows a high NH3 production rate of 109.3 µmol g-1 h-1 under visible-light irradiation and a remarkable apparent quantum efficiency of 1.1% at 400 nm, which is the highest compared to all TiO2 -based photocatalysts at present.
Mechanism of sulfamic acid modified biochar for highly efficient removal of tetracycline

Abstract:In this work, a novel modified biochar was prepared by pretreatment of Camellia oleifera shell with sulfamic acid. The effects of sulfamic acid on the properties of feedstock and biochar, and the influence of pyrolysis temperature on the modification was investigated. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism of modified biochar for tetracycline (TC) was explore. The results showed that the specific surface area (170.97 m2/g) of the modified biochar was 2.6 times larger than that of the original biochar (65.31 m2/g). In addition, sulfamic acid treatment introduced more functional groups for biochar. These modification effects significantly improved the adsorption performance of biochar. The maximum adsorption capacity of sulfamic acid modified biochar for TC was 412.95 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism studies demonstrated that there were many interactions in the adsorption process, including electrostatic interaction, H bonding, π-π interaction, pore filling. In general, sulfamic acid was a potential green modification reagent, which could be used to improve the adsorption performance of biochar.

Abstract:In this work, bio-char, a mass productive by-product of biomass fast pyrolysis, was adopted as an adsorbent to remove tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solution. To enhance the adsorption capacity, a simple modification of bio-char with acid and alkali was carried out. Bio-char samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm. The results show that the alkali treated bio-char possesses larger surface area than those of raw and acid treated bio-chars, and accordingly exhibits a more excellent adsorption performance (58.8mg/g) than the other two bio-chars and other adsorbents reported previously. The graphite-like structure of bio-char facilitates the formation of π–π interactions between ring structure in tetracycline molecule and graphite-like sheets. The surface area showed significant effects on TC adsorption as well as O-containing functional groups, whereas the initial pH of solution has small effects on TC adsorption under the experimental conditions.
Performance and mechanism of Al, N co-doped carbon/nano-TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation for the removal of ammonia nitrogen and Ni/Co complexes from ternary precursor wastewater

Abstract:The process of producing ternary precursors for new lithium batteries produces industrial wastewater containing high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and metal ammonia complexes, which requires strict treatment. In this study, a simple and efficient photocatalyst (Al, N co-doped carbon/nano-TiO2) with excellent adsorption and photocatalytic properties was developed. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption test, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which indicated that the catalyst had excellent specific surface area and strong light absorption properties. In addition, the performance of photocatalytic treatment of ternary precursor wastewater was investigated by varying the amount of Al doping, the loading of nano-TiO2, the amount of catalyst input, changing the adsorption and photocatalytic time. The results suggested that the 3.0 g/L of Al, N co-doped carbon/nano-TiO2 composite photocatalyst achieved 91.45% degradation efficiency of ammonia nitrogen and the removal efficiency of nickel and cobalt was 99.11% and 98.34%, respectively. EDS and XPS analyses showed that ammonia nitrogen pollutants in the wastewater were eventually degraded to nitrogen and nitrogen oxides, with nickel and cobalt adsorbed on the catalyst surface in the form of Ni2+ and Co2+.
