Abstract:A novel designed method for tunable wavelength microcavity organic electroluminescent diode (MOLED) based on the birefringence of liquid crystal was presented. By modulated the refractive index of liquid crystal, the device could radiate with different wavelength continuously. The simulated result showed that the tunable range could reach to 60 nm and the full width of half maximum is 5.5 nm. The device could be applied to wavelength converter and tunable light source.
Peripherally Modified Tetraphenylethene: Emerging as a Room-Temperature Luminescent Disc-Like Nematic Liquid Crystal

Abstract:A blue-light-emitting liquid crystalline (LC) material was designed and prepared. By employing a twisted luminescent core (i.e., tetraphenylethene), four peripheral LC units with long alkyl chains and the small polar benzyl-ether-typed linking groups, the resulting material displayed a hexagonal columnar phase near room temperature and a disc-like nematic phase between 32 and 70 °C. The columnar LC showed a high quantum yield of 0.49 at 20 °C, and the efficient luminescence property was retained even in the isotropic phase at high temperature. Abstract:Discotic liquid crystal materials, as organic semiconductor materials, have demonstrated tremendous prospective applications in high-tech fields such as solar cells and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Discotic liquid crystals represented by triphenylene have been extensively researched for their highly ordered self-assembly and self-repairing capabilities. The triphenylene motif, commonly introduced into trimeric discotic molecules as an electron donor, was relatively rare when used as a repeating unit in trimeric discotic liquid crystals. In comparison with triphenylene monomers and dimers, the long-chain-linked triphenylene trimers did not exhibit differentiated mesomorphic properties. In this study, we synthesized a series of triphenylene-triphenylene-triphenylene type discotic liquid crystalline trimers TTPn through Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, connected via σ single bonds. Compared with the triphenylene monomers and their dimers, TTPn demonstrates unique and superior qualities in terms of mesomorphic and photophysical properties. The series of compounds exhibits oblique discotic columnar phases with a broad mesophase range. The TTPn shows blue photo-induced luminescence in solution, with the highest absolute fluorescence quantum yield reaching 66% in solution, and the photoluminescence phenomenon still exists in the film state. Therefore, the TTPn holds potential application value in fields such as liquid crystalline semiconductors and organic light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:A series of triphenylamine-based discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) containing three α -cyanostilbene units and a central triphenylamine were designed and prepared using Suzuki coupling and Knoevenagel reaction. Polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction were employed to investigate the textures, phase transition temperatures and self-assembly structures, demonstrating that all the compounds exhibit Col squ / p 4 mm phase. The only Col squ / p 4 mm phase could be observed with elongation of terminal alkyl chains, which might be attributed to the central propeller-shaped triphenylamine unit and α -cyanostilbene units with different configurations. These DLCs displayed temperature-dependent emission behavior and high fluorescence intensity even in isotropic state. Interestingly, these DLCs are insensitive for 365 nm UV light in bulk state, whereas sensitive in solution state. Distinct positive solvatochromism in different organic solvents and aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) behavior in tetrahydrofuran-H 2 O mixtures could be observed due to the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and twisted configuration induced by triphenylamine and α -cyanostilbene units, respectively. The optimized geometry and spatial distribution of the HOMO and LUMO obtained from density functional theory calculations well demonstrated ICT and twisted conformation. Therefore, this work will provide a rational molecular design strategy to construct AIEE-active liquid crystals with excellent properties and wide potential applications.

Abstract:Covering a nano-patterned titanium dioxide photonic crystal (PC) within a well-oriented film of dye-doped liquid crystal (LC), a distributed feedback laser is constructed whereby the emission characteristics can be manipulated in-situ using an electric field. This hybrid organic-inorganic structure permits simultaneous selectivity of both the beam pattern and laser wavelength by electrical addressing of the LC director. In addition, laser emission is obtained both in the plane and normal to the PC. Along with experimental data, a theoretical model is presented that is based upon an approximate calculation of the band structure of this birefringent, tuneable laser device. Abstract:A series of novel discotic liquid-crystalline donor-acceptor(D-A) dyads 5D10An(n=4,5,6,7,8) adjusted by changing the chain length (n) of diester groups on perylene were synthesized based on triphenylene and perylene units which linked by a flexible linkage of 10-decyloxy-1-amine. Results from the Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), one-dimensional X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns, and Polarized Optical Microscope (POM) images indicate that 5D10A4, 5D10A5, 5D10A6, and 5D10A7 exhibited hexagonal columnar phase at high temperature ranges and rectangular columnar phases at room temperature. Combining the XRD data and the steady state spectra of UV/vis and Fluorescence, the intramolecular triphenylenes and perylene diester cores stacked separately in distinct columns and nano-segregation occurred during self-assembly. HOMO/LUMO energy levels obtained from CV, UV/vis, UPS and Gaussian09. Charge carrier mobilities were measured by time-of-flight (TOF) device. These discotic liquid-crystalline compounds exhibited highly efficient ambipolar charge-transport properties and the hole and electron mobilities can reach the order of 10-3 cm2 V-1 S-1 by segregated D-A columns. This is the first reported D-A dyads discotic liquid crystals which was not only ambipolar transport but also the columnar phase structures of them can be stabilized at room temperature, providing potential utility of the strategy in organic optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Luminescent liquid crystal materials (LLCMs) have been a hot research topic in the field of fluorescent materials. In this study, we successfully designed and synthesized an intense fluorescence thermotropic liquid crystal material with a fluorescence quantum yield (Φ) of 0.26 in the solid state. Moreover, the alkyl chain attached to the terminus of the chromophore was able to promote the stability of electrochemical and thermal properties, which was beneficial to the device fabrication reproducibility and stability of the device performance.

Abstract:We propose a universal method of fabricating and operating a multifunctional diffractive optical element (DOE) with light-rewritable geometric phase and reflectance modulations enabled by pattern-aligned photoresponsive liquid crystal superstructures via manipulating the photoalignment layers as well as the phototunable helical pitch of the cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) under different light stimuli, i.e. ultraviolet and visible (green) lights. The diffractive behaviour of the fabricated CLC DOE is simultaneously governed by the geometric phase induced by the pattern-aligned CLC and the reflectance (amplitude) modulation attributed to the helical pitch manipulation, endowing the proposed DOE with versatile practical light-controllable characteristics and outstanding performance.
Synthesis and Photoluminescence of Graphdiyne

Abstract:Graphdiyne was prepared by a cross coupling reaction and characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy and XPS. Its photoluminescence (PL) properties were investigated. It was found that the graphdiyne has a thickness of ca. 1 μm, a O/C atomic ratio of ca. 0.1741 and many oxygen-containing functional groups. It exhibits strong ultraviolet (UV) PL at 397 nm and optical absorption at ca. 280 nm. It is proposed that the oxygen-containing functional groups in the graphdiyne induce charge transfer, leading to the PL properties. As a new kind of artificially synthesized carbon allotrope, graphdiyne with UV PL have many applications.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A novel α-cyanostilbene-containing tetraphenylethylene-based discotic LC with 3,4,5-tridecyloxy benzene units at the terminal was synthesized by Ti-catalyzed McMurry coupling, Pd-catalyzed Suzuki coupling and Knoevenagel reactions as key steps. The liquid crystal and photophysical properties were well demonstrated by polarizing optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray scattering (XRD), molecular dynamics (MD) and optical experiments. The compound could self-assemble into Colhex/p6mm mesophase in a wide temperature range. It is interesting that two discotic molecules formed one columnar slice, which was attributed to the twisted conformation of propeller-like TPE and α-cyanostilbene. The photophysical properties of the TPE-based DLCs including solvatochromism and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behaviors were systematically investigated demonstrating large Stokes shifts, high fluorescence quantum yields and strong fluorescence in both solution and aggregated states. This work indicated that the combination of different AIE-active units into one LC molecule could induce complex self-assembly structure and excellent fluorescence properties.

Abstract:In this article, the fabrication of an active organic-inorganic one-dimensional photonic crystal structure to offer electrothermal fluorescence switching is described. The film is obtained by spin-coating of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and TiO nanoparticles alternatively. By utilizing the property of LCEs that can change their size and shape reversibly under external thermal stimulations, the λ of the photonic band gap of these films is tuned by voltage through electrothermal conversion. The shifted photonic band gap further changes the matching degree between the photonic band gap of the film and the emission spectrum of organic dye mounting on the film. With rhodamine B as an example, the enhancement factor of its fluorescence emission is controlled by varying the matching degree. Thus, the fluorescence intensity is actively switched by voltage applied on the system, in a fast, adjustable, and reversible manner. The control chain of using the electrothermal stimulus to adjust fluorescence intensity via controlling the photonic band gap is proved by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and UV-vis reflectance. This mechanism also corresponded to the results from the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The comprehensive usage of photonic crystals and liquid crystal elastomers opened a new possibility for active optical devices.

Abstract:Discotic liquid crystal (LC) molecules readily form columnar supramolecular structures.Because of molecular mobility in the LC state these columnar assemblies can self-heal structural defects to a certain extent.Therefore,conjugated aromatic molecules of the discotic LC state may exhibit exceptional charge carrier transport properties,and thus are potential active materials for use in optoelectronic devices.In this review,a number of discotic LC materials including benzene,triphenylene,hexabenzocoronene,perylene,and phthalocyanine derivatives are reviewed.The emphases are on the correlation between chemical structure and LC properties and some recent developments in the application of these materials in optoelectronic devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLED),organic field-effect transistors (OFET),and photovoltaic cells.In addition,studies related to the dynamics of some discotic LC materials are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) have significant potential in the field of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and are proposed as potential next-generation of LCDs candidates. However, BPLCs do not emit light directly and need an extra backlight device. As a result, the blue phase liquid crystal display (BPLCD) retains the disadvantages of low brightness and low energy efficiency, which remarkably limit its application. Recently, as a kind of novel fluorescent carbon nanomaterials, carbon dots (CDs) have captured considerable attention because of their excellent optical properties. Here, CDs were directly synthesized by a simple solvothermal method and introduced into BPLCs. By combining the excellent optical properties of CDs with the blue phase liquid crystal system, the photoluminescent blue phase liquid crystals (CDs-BPLCs) with self-photoluminescence are prepared. Meanwhile, the stability of blue phase liquid crystals can be improved by CDs. Such CDs-BPLCs have enormous potential in the development of novel energy-saving display devices.

Abstract:A novel type of discotic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) based on an enlarged dibenzo[a,c]phenazine core has been developed. The large conjugated mesogenic core with increased dipole moment derived from S,N heteroatoms facilitates the formation of highly ordered columnar superstructures both in solution and bulk. Columnar mesophases, including liquid crystal (LC) and plastic crystal (PC) assemblies could form unprecedentedly based on the same PAH core. The cores are delicately modulated by the peripherical alkoxy chains. Both mesogens have mechanochromic fluorescent (MCF) character, which is also structure dependent and correlated with the different mesophase formation. For the first time, MCF properties can be realized in such a large conjugated mesogenic system.

Abstract:A novel dinuclear platinum complex of (biC12ppy-fl)Pt2C12DBM)2 with liquid crystal luminescent property has been prepared, as well as its liquid crystal, optophysical properties and hole mobility have been studied, where biC12ppy-fl is 6,6′-[4,4′-(9,9-didodecyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(1,4-phenylene)]bis[3-(dodecyloxymethyl)pyridine] and C12DBM is 1,3-bis[4-(dodecyloxy)phenyl]propane-1,3-dione. This dinuclear platinum complex displayed a smectic mesophase and excellent opto-physical properties. Compared to the reported mononuclear platinum complex of (CnROppy)Pt(acac) (R = H, F), this dinuclear platinum complex exhibited higher emission quantum yield and higher stability, as well as higher hole mobility of 8.4 × 10–4 cm2/(V s). Moreover, a highly polarized ratio of 10.3 was obtained for the aligned film of (biC12ppy-fl)Pt2(C12DBM)2 on the aligned polyimide at room temperature.

Abstract:A waveband-selective diffraction device, possessing dynamic and reversible light manipulation of its waveband-selectivity within a wide spectral range (similar to 140 nm), was developed by micro-patterning of a photoresponsive self-organized helical liquid crystal superstructure. Distinct from a conventional liquid crystal diffraction device, applied in a wide band from ultraviolet to near infrared wherein the diffracting light is due to the alternate phase modulation caused by the difference on liquid crystal arrangement, herein, the diffraction was mainly induced by an alternate transmittance/reflectance (i.e., amplitude) modulation to an incident light with a certain wavelength located in a selective reflection band of a binary patterned helical liquid crystal layer, producing diffraction both on the transmission and reflection sides of the sample. The waveband-selectivity was determined and manipulated by appropriately controlling the reflection band of the patterned helical liquid crystals. A prominent advantage compared to the majority of other liquid crystal polymer based devices is the electric responsiveness of such a device in addition to its photoresponsiveness. Moreover, an excellent light reconfiguration, exhibiting an erasing of the grating, followed by a rewriting of a Fresnel zone plate was achieved.

Abstract:Organic luminescent materials with the ability to reversibly switch the luminescence when subjected to external stimuli have attracted considerable interest in recent years. However, the examples of luminescent materials that exhibit multiresponsive properties are rarely reported. In this work, a new stimuli-responsive dye P1 is designed and synthesized with two identical chromophores of naphthalimide, one at each side of an amidoamine-based spacer. This amide-rich molecule offers many possibilities for forming intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions. Particularly, P1 has an intrinsic property of cocrystallizing with methanol. Compared with the pristine P1 sample, the as-prepared two-component cocrystalline material displays an exceptive deep-blue emission, which is extremely rare among naphthalimide-based molecules in the solid state. Furthermore, the target material exhibits an obvious mechanochromic fluorescent behavior and a large spectral shift under force stimuli. On the other hand, the cocrystalline material shows an unusual "turn off" thermochromic luminescence accompanied by solvent evaporation. Moreover, using external stimuli to reversibly manipulate fluorescent quantum yields is rarely reported to date. The results demonstrate the feasibility of a new design strategy for solid-state luminescence switching materials: the incorporation of solvents into organic compounds by cocrystallization to obtain a crystalline state luminescence system.

Abstract:Reversible photochromic phase transition of non-planar dithienylcyclopentene-containing liquid crystalline molecules has been studied in this work. All materials showed the smectic A and nematic phases in the cooling process and had reversible and high interconversion yield >90% between colourless-open/blue-closed isomers in the liquid crystalline state as well as in solution by UV- and visible light-irradiation alternatively, as confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, polarised optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffraction and UV-visible spectroscopy. The thermal stability of both isomers also ensures that they can maintain liquid crystalline phases during ring-open and ring-closure reactions.
