Abstract:The reaction of mononuclear [Co-II(Me(6)tren)Cl](+) precursors and diamagnetic [Fe-II(CN)(6)](4-) building blocks affords a cyanide-bridged hexanuclear FeCo5 complex featuring square-pyramidal architecture. The dc magnetic susceptibility data and theoretical calculations reveal that the complex exhibits a well-isolated S = 15/2 ground state composed of c-coupled S = 3/2 Co2+ ions. The ac magnetic susceptibility data further reveal that the complex exhibits slow magnetic relaxation under an applied field due to the presence of considerable easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of the five Co2+ ions. As far as is known, complex FeCo5 is the first square-pyramidal hexanuclear single-ion magnet.
Polyoxometalate-Assisted Assembly of Pearl-Chain-Like Cyanide-Bridged Single-Chain Magnets

Abstract:The introduction of Keggin-type POMs of [PMo12O40]3- or [SiW12O40]4- as counteranions into the FeIII-MII cyanometalate system afforded three chain complexes: [(Tp*)Fe(CN)3Ni(DMF)4]2{[(Tp*)Fe(CN)3Ni(DMF)3(H2O)]2Ni(DMF)4}[PMo12O40]2·14DMF (1, Tp*= hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate) and {[(Tp*)Fe(CN)3M(DMF)3(H2O)]2M(DMF)4}[SiW12O40]·3DMF (2, M = NiII; 3, M = CoII). Complex 1 contains both discrete cationic [Fe2Ni2]2+ squares and less-studied {Fe2Ni3}n pearl chains, namely 3,2-chains, while 2 and 3 consist of pure 3,2-chains due to the replacement of [PMo12O40]3- with [SiW12O40]4- bearing one more negative charge. Magnetic studies revealed that all of the complexes exhibit single-chain-magnet (SCM) behaviors with the effective thermal barriers of Δτ1/kB = 61.6 K (infinite regime) and Δτ2/kB = 36.5 K (finite regime) for 1, Δτ/kB = 46.9 K for 2 (finite), and Δτ/kB = 30.6 K for 3 (finite). The POM moieties may play a pivotal role for the realization of this promising archetype of favoring SCM property: (1) the highly negatively charged POMs may facilitate the formation of the uncommon highly positive "pearl chain"; (2) the nanosized POMs necessarily led to the good isolation of the chains in the title complexes, and (3) the employment of POMs with different charges may regulate the resultant complexes in both structure and magnetism.

Abstract:A new chain cobalt(II) complex, [Co(L)2]n (L = 5-methylsulfanyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-thione), has been synthesized. Single crystal analysis shows that it crystallizes in tetragonal space group I-4. The asymmetric unit contains four independent Co(II) ions, and two independent L ligands. Two Co(II) metal center ions are four-coordinated via a ring N atom in tetrahedral CoN4 and the other two Co(II) ions are four-coordinated via the thione group in tetrahedral CoS4 coordination environment. Magnetic investigations show that the complex reveals strong antiferromagnetic coupling through NSN bridges between adjacent Co(II) ions and the complex also exhibits long-range magnetic ordering under low temperature. Furthermore, the isothermal field-dependent magnetization exhibits a small hysteresis loop at low temperature in this one dimensional complex.

Abstract:Two new trihydrazine bridged Co(II) chain compounds have been synthesized and magnetically characterized. The two compounds are both composed of [Co(N2H4)3](2+) chains. Abstract:A one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymer [Co(btca)(1/2)(mbpy)](n) (1, mbpy=4,4 '-Dimethyl-2,2 '-bipyridyl, H(4)btca=1,2,4,5-Benzenetetracarboxylic acid) constructed by a mixed tetracarboxylic-dipyridyl ligand strategy with a ribbon topology was synthesized and magnetically characterized. Magnetic studies combined with theoretical calculations reveal large easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of the central Co(II) ions in a highly distorted five-coordination geometry. Interestingly, field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior was evidenced in the chain compound, making the cobalt(II) coordination ribbon to be the first five-coordinate SIM chain.

Abstract:Three two-dimensional Co-II complexes, namely, [Co(dps)(2)Cl-2](n) (1), [Co(dps)(2)Br-2](n) (2), and [Co(dps)(2)(H2O)(2) center dot I-2 center dot(H2O)(4)](n) (3) (where dps = 4,4'-dipyridyl sulfide), have been synthesized using a rationally designed synthetic approach and characterized structurally and magnetically. Although they crystallize in different space groups, these compounds all have similar two-dimensional (4,4) layer structures where the Co2+ centers are bridged by the bis.monodentate) ligand dps. In addition, the coordination geometry of the Co2+ centers is of a general CoN4X2 octahedral environment formed by four equatorial N atoms from four dps ligands and two X atoms (X = Cl, Br, and O atoms for 1-3, respectively) in the axial positions. Ab initio calculations revealed that due to the strong spin-orbit coupling, the spin Hamiltonian containing the zero-field splitting parameters D and E cannot be used to describe their magnetic anisotropy. According to the calculation, the g(z) values for the spin-orbit ground doublets of 1-3 are larger than the g(x) and g(y) values, which indicates the easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of these compounds. Due to the existence of the magnetic anisotropy, field-induced single-ion magnet behavior can be observed in all these complexes. This work illustrated that care should be taken to interpret the magnetic data of octahedral Co-II compounds. In addition, extended frameworks with long and flexible organic spacers are good candidates for the construction of SIMs with different axial ligands and different magnetic properties.

Abstract:Using the half-sandwich tricyanometalate, KCpCo(CN)3 (1, Cp=cyclopentadienyl), as the building block, two new cyano-bridged heterobimetallic complexes, [{CpCo(CN)3}2M(H2O)2]·2H2O (M=FeII, 2; CoII, 3), have been synthesized and characterized. They are isostructural and show two-dimensional network layer structure. The magnetic studies have been investigated and there exists antiferromagnetic interaction in both complexes 2 and 3.

Abstract:Tuning magnetic anisotropy via perturbing the coordination environment of metal ions is of great importance for developing high-performance single-ion magnets (SIMs). We herein reported the syntheses and characterization of four one-dimensional cobalt(II) coordination polymers featuring distorted tetrahedral metal center, namely {[Co(pdms)(bpy)]bpy}n (Cobpy), {[Co(pdms)(bpen)]}n (Cobpen), {[Co(pdms)(bpdoz)]H2O}n (Cobpdoz), and {[Co(pdms)(bimp)]2DMF3H2O}n (Cobimp) (bpy = 4,4 '-bipyridine, bpen = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene, bpdoz = 2,5- di(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole, bimp = 1,4-bis[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]benzene). By the assembly of [Co(pdms)2](2+) anions and different organic bridging ligands, the chains with highly anisotropic four-coordinate Co(II) ions exhibit a significant modification of the structures, especially the tetrahedral coordination sphere. Notably, the two angle N-Co-N bite angles, which mainly determine the magnetic anisotropy of tetrahedral mononuclear cobalt complexes, were significantly changed due to the use of different organic linkers. Magnetic measurements reveal that the four complexes possess uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with the zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters D being -39.7, -32.1, -23.8, and -43.4 cm(-1) for Cobpy, Cobpen, Cobpdoz, and Cobimp, respectively. This observation and their electronic structures were further unveiled by theoretical calculations. Dynamic alternative current magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that both the chains exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under an external field, indicating field-induced slow magnetic relaxation of the coordination polymers (1D SIM-CPs). Notably, the relaxation behaviors are also modified due to the structural differences induced by distinct linkers. The foregoing results not only enrich the family of 1D SIM-CPs showing low-coordinated metal centers but also offer a coordination chain platform for tuning magnetic anisotropy of four-coordinate Co(II) ions in 1D chains.

Abstract:Both square planar and tetrahedral isomers of the four-coordinate complex [Co(Bc(tBu))(2)] with a bis(3-tert-butylimidazol-2-ylidene)-borate ligand (Bc(tBu)) have been isolated while only a tetrahedral configuration was found for the Fe(II) analogue [Fe(Bc(tBu))(2)]. Novel co-crystals containing both isomers of [Co(Bc(tBu))(2)] have been obtained from recrystallization.

Abstract:The synthesis, single-crystal structures and magnetic properties of two new double-zigzag-chain cyano-bridged heterobimetallic {[MІІ(Py-NOH)2][FeІІІ(Tp*)(CN)3]2}·H2O ([FeIII2MII]) (Py-NOH = 4-pyridinealdoxime, Tp* = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borohydride, M = Ni (1), Fe (2)) compounds are reported. The crystal structures of both compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 2 are isostructural, with the crystal structure comprising neutral double-zigzag (4,2-ribbon-like) bimetallic chains. The FeIII ion is coordinated by three cyanide carbon atoms and three nitrogen atoms of Tp* anions. However, the MII ion is surrounded by four cyanide nitrogen atoms and two nitrogen atoms from two Py-NOH ligands. The crystal structures and magnetic studies demonstrate that both complexes behave as single-chain magnetic (SCM) with intrachain ferromagnetic coupling. Furthermore, [FeIII2NiII] exhibits an excellent coercive field of 0.42 T at 1.8 K, among cyano-bridged 3d transition-metal-based SCMs reported thus far. Preliminary theoretical calculations provide a deep understanding of the magnetic properties of [FeIII2NiII].

Abstract:Starting from the pentagonal bipyramidal single-ion magnet [Co(tdmmb)(H2O)(2)][BF4](2) and a series of linear bridging ligands of different lengths, three new cobalt(II) one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers, [Co(tdmmb)(pyz)][BF4](2)center dot CH3CN center dot H2O (1), [Co(tdmmb)(apy)][BF4](2)center dot 2CH(3)CN (2), and [Co(tdmmb)(bpe)][BF4](2)center dot 3CH(3)CN (3) (tdmmb = 1,3,10,12-tetramethyl-1,2,11,12-tetra-aza[3](2,6) pyridino[3](2,9)-1,10-phenanthrolinophan-2,10-diene) (pyz = pyrazine) (apy = 4-aminopyridine) (bpe = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl) ethane)), have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Symmetric ligands pyz and bpe result in the nearly linear chains in 1 and 3, while the asymmetric ligand apy leads to the zig-zag chain in 2. As the length of the ligands increases, the intrachain Co center dot center dot center dot Co distance also increases, i.e. 7.56, 7.70, and 13.85 angstrom for 1-3, respectively. Magnetic investigation revealed the gradual decrease in the magnetic interactions between the Co2+ ions from 1 to 3, along with the increase in the intrachain Co-Co distances. Due to the existence of the weak antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction, the SIM behavior of the starting material is surpressed in compounds 1 and 2, and they show a simple paramagnetic behavior. While for 3, field-induced slow magnetic relaxation was observed at a low temperature with an energy barrier of U-eff = 19 K. This observation suggests that the magnetic interaction between the Co2+ centers in 3 is negligible, consistent with the very long Co-Co distance in 3. These 1D compounds are rare chain compounds composed of metal centers with a nearly D-5h symmetry. Notably, compound 3 is the second example of a 1D Co(II) chain compound displaying a SIM behaviour. These studies illustrated that the magnetic interaction between the SIMs can be used to tune slow magnetic relaxation.

Abstract:Two mononuclear, seven-coordinate Co(ii) and Fe(ii) complexes [CoII(BPA-TPA)](BF4)2 (1-Co) and [FeII(BPA-TPA)](ClO4)2 (2-Fe) with a capped trigonal prismatic coordination geometry have been synthesized from the pentapyridyldiamine (BPA-TPA) ligand. 1-Co exhibits easy plane anisotropy in which slow magnetic relaxation is observed under a 1.0 kOe dc field. It is the first example of a single-ion magnet (SIM) of a 3d transition metal ion with a capped trigonal prismatic configuration. 2-Fe is not a SIM at 1.8 K.
Tricomponent Azide, Tetrazolate, and Carboxylate Cobridging Magnetic Systems: Ferromagnetic Coupling, Metamagnetism, and Single-Chain Magnetism

Abstract:Three novel coordination polymers with azide and a bifunctional zwitterionic ligand bearing carboxylate and tetrazolate as bridging groups, [M(L)(N(3))]·xH(2)O [L=1-(carboxylatomethyl)-4-(5-tetrazolato)pyridinium, M=Cu (1, x=2), Ni (2, x=1), and Co (3, x=1)], have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography and magnetic measurements. The compounds consist of two-dimensional coordination layers in which uniform anionic chains with the unprecedented tricomponent (μ-azide)(μ-tetrazolate)(μ-carboxylate) bridges are cross-linked by cationic 1-methylenepyridinium spacers. The tricomponent bridges induce ferromagnetic interactions in all the compounds. Furthermore, this isostructural series of ferromagnetic-chain-based compounds has allowed us to observe distinct bulk properties that are dependent upon the natures of the different spin carriers: with the isotropic Cu(II) ion, 1 exhibits a paramagnetic phase of the ferromagnetic chains without long-range magnetic order above 2 K; with the weakly anisotropic Ni(II) ions, 2 displays antiferromagnetic ordering and field-induced metamagnetism without slow dynamic relaxation; and with Co(II), which has strong magnetic anisotropy due to first-order spin-orbital coupling, 3 exhibits magnetic hysteresis and slow magnetization dynamics typical of single-chain magnets.

Abstract:Four cyanide-bridged bimetallic Ni(II)–Fe(III) complexes have been synthesized and characterized in order to find new molecular materials with interesting magnetic properties. One-dimensional complexes of pentacyanoferrite(III), [Ni(2,3,2-tet)Fe(Him)(CN)5]·3H2O (1), [Ni(3,2,3-tet)][Fe(CN)5(Him)]·2H2O (2), [Ni(3,2,3-tet)][Fe(CN)5(1-CH3im)]·4H2O (3), and [NiL1][Fe(CN)5(1-CH3im)]·3H2O (4) have been prepared and characterized by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis and magnetic measurements. All complexes possesses linear or zigzag chains of alternate [Ni(L′)]2+ and [Fe(L)(CN)5]2− units, which are linked by two trans/cis cyanide ligands of [Fe(L)(CN)5]2−. Magnetic studies reveal that they exhibit intermetallic ferromagnetic coupling and long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. The strength of the Ni(II)–Fe(III) magnetic coupling has been analyzed by comparison with the related cyanide-bridged Ni(II)–Fe(III) complexes.

Abstract:Two isomorphous 3D Mn(II) and Co(II) coordination polymers with a dicarboxylate inner salt and cyanate as coligands were synthesized and structurally characterized, and their magnetic properties have been studied. In the compounds, [M(L)(NCO)](n).nH(2)O (M = Mn, Co, L = 1-carboxymethylpyridinium-4-carboxylate), neighboring metal ions are linked by the 3-fold bridges of an end-on cyanate and two syn-syn carboxylate bridges to give an anionic chain of [M(mu-NCO)(mu-COO)(2)](n), and each chain is interlinked to four other chains by the cationic 1-methylpyridinium spacers to generate a 3D structure with the 4(2). 6(3). 8 net topology. They are the first compounds with mixed cyanate and carboxylate bridges. Magnetic studies reveal that the 3-fold mixed bridge propagates antiferromagnetic coupling in the Mn(II) compound but ferromagnetic coupling in the Co(II) compound. The rather complex magnetic behaviors of the Co(II) compound are analyzed taking into account the first-order spin-orbital coupling and the intrachain ferromagnetic interactions.

Abstract:A new complex, [Co2(C25H30N4)3](NO3)4·8H2O, has been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, ESI-MS spectroscopy, electronic absorption spectrum, and magnetic measurements. The cation of the complex contains two cobalt(II) atoms and three ligands (L), which twist around the Co(II)–Co(II) axis, leading to a dinuclear triple helix. Each cobalt(II) atom is six-coordinated with three Co–N (pyridyl) and three Co–N (NCH–) of three ligands (L), and attains a pseudo-octahedral coordination geometry. Magnetic measurements show that the complex is a high-spin species in the temperature range of 75–300K.
Cobalt(II) Ions Connecting [CoII4] Helicates into a 2-D Coordination Polymer Showing Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization

Abstract:The reactions of cobalt(II) perchlorate with a diazine tetratopic helicand, H4L, in the presence of sodium carbonate afford two coordination polymers constructed from tetranuclear anionic helicates as building blocks: ∞3[Co4L3Na4(H2O)4]·4H2O (1) and ∞2[Co5L3Na2(H2O)9]·2.7H2O·DMF (2). The tetranuclear triple-stranded helicates, {CoII4L3}4-, are connected in 1 by sodium(I) ions and in 2 by sodium(I) and cobalt(II) ions (H4L results from the condensation reaction between 3-formylsalicylic acid and hydrazine). The crystal structures of the two compounds have been solved. In both compounds the anionic helicates interact with the assembling cations through the carboxylato oxygen atoms. Compound 2 features chains resulting from connecting the tetranuclear helicates through cobalt(II) ions. The analysis of the magnetic properties of compounds 1 and 2 evidenced a dominant antiferromagnetic coupling for 1, resulting in a diamagnetic ground state. In contrast, the magnetic behavior of 2 is dominated at low temperature by the CoII ion which connects the antiferromagnetically coupled {CoII4} helical moieties. The ac magnetic measurements for 2 reveal the occurrence of slow relaxation of the magnetization that is due to the single, uncorrelated cobalt(II) ions, which are diluted in an essentially diamagnetic matrix of {CoII4} moieties (ΔEeff = 26.7 ± 0.3 cm-1 with τ0 = (2.3 ± 0.2) × 10-6 s).

Abstract:Four novel cobalt(II) coordination polymers [Co2(OA)(dib)2(H2O)] (1), [Co2(OA)(bbi)2]·3H2O (2), [Co3(HOA)2(bpe)2(H2O)6]·2H2O (3), and [Co2(OA)(dpe)(H2O)2] (4) were obtained by hydrothermal reactions of Co(NO3)2·6H2O with 3,3′,4,4′-oxidiphthalic acid (H4OA) and corresponding N-donor ligands, namely, 1,4-di(1-imidazolyl)benzene (dib), 1,1′-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole) (bbi), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe), and 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene (dpe), respectively. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that 1 is a two-dimensional (2D) network containing infinite -(Co–O–C–O)n- chains, while 2 features a 2D double-layered structure with two types of homochiral helical chains filled in the cavities.
