Abstract:The development of an organism from the earliest stages of fertilization to the production of the next generation of gametes is one of nature's most miraculous and mysterious processes. During this process, the entire blueprint for the organism encoded in the genome is converted into a 3-dimensional body plan complete with a myriad of different cell types, each with their own highly specialized functions. All of this requires exquisitely controlled communication between cells that evolves over time and space as the organism is elaborated. In plants, this situation is more complex as cell migration does not occur, and the developmental programs are constantly adjusting to environmental cues that help sculpt the final plant form or coordinate with favorable seasonal conditions. Across evolutionary time, we see common themes in these programs, yet species-specific differences contribute to the startling diversity of plant forms in nature. Understanding how all this is achieved is the holy grail for plant science and will likely inform our ability to further shape domesticated crop traits to improve their resilience to the continuously changing environment. Central to this is the need to define the pathways that shape plant stem cell regulation and cell differentiation, which drive all aspects of plant development. The series of articles in this issue highlights only a small fraction of the fascinating research being done by plant developmental biologists in the area of stem cell regulation and cell differentiation. Several key themes emerge. First, Arabidopsis, which has been and still is a genetic workhorse for cracking plant biology for decades, continues to provide foundational insights into plant developmental mechanisms. This is largely due to the wealth of data in this species, the creativity of labs working on it, and its sustained and expanding advantages for dissecting core plant processes. Arabidopsis continues to prove informative for studies in other species, including crop species. As such, strong and continued funding for basic Arabidopsis research will be highly impactful and should be a critical priority in plant sciences. The second emerging theme is that technology is changing what we can do in plant development, what questions we can ask, and even which species we can work on. Technological advances have enabled the ability to start to untangle the extensive crosstalk that occurs across the signaling modules that shape development. The explosion of CRISPR-based technologies and the advent of more sophisticated omics technologies have allowed researchers to probe the genetic programs behind development at scale and on highly defined temporal and spatial scales. It has also allowed us to dissect developmental mechanisms across species, complementing the extensive traditional genetic resources in crop species and allowing us to create new plant models. The curiosity-driven research in newly emerging model plants, basal plant species, and crop models is contributing to our understanding of plant development and providing directions for improving crop performance or even engineering new products with commercial values. The third theme is that the plant's developmental programs are not their own. These developmental programs are often at the mercy of environmental stresses and damage, and plants have elaborated extensive mechanisms to deal with this, and even repair and reconstruct their body plans if needed. Additionally, other species can hijack plant developmental programs and induce new developmental outcomes. This is sometimes in collaboration with the plant and at other times to the plants' detriment. Below we provide an overview of the review topics in this issue.
