Abstract:
The present study proposes a non-contact experimental design using pressure sensitive paint to measure the enhanced mixing effect throughout the whole flow field caused by shock waves in supersonic film cooling, which has usually been investigated numerically in previous studies due to the great experimental difficulties. This paper presents a numerical study of the changes in the oxygen partial pressure along the wall with air as the mainstream and air, helium and nitrogen as the cooling stream to verify the feasibility of this experimental method. The results show that the shock wave not only increases the oxygen concentration along the wall due to more intense mixing but also increases the local pressure which also increases the oxygen partial pressure along the wall. Thus, air is used in the initial calculations to eliminate the influence of the increased local pressure. Further calculations using helium and nitrogen then show the enhanced mixing effect of the shock wave. The predictions show that the enhanced mixing effect of the shock wave is stronger for stronger shock waves and lighter cooling gases, which agrees with previous studies. Therefore, this method can be used to experimentally investigate mixing in supersonic film cooling in future studies.
