Abstract:The perceived robust stability of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) was regarded as an important feature of ZIFs that have intrigued intensive research efforts. However, hydrolysis of ZIF crystals was recently identified under hydrothermal conditions. In this work, the dynamic stability of α-alumina supported ZIF-8 membranes and static stability of both ZIF-8 membranes and powder in water were studied via pervaporation and batch durability tests at room temperature. The sharp increase in water pervaporation flux from 0.04kgm−2h−1 to 1.39kgm−2h−1 and the disappearance of ZIF-8 structure after pervaporation are consistent with morphology and phase structure data showing that ZIF-8 layer on the α-alumina support underwent degradation during water pervaporation. The gradual degradation of ZIF-8 layer was also experimentally observed in batch durability tests in pure water. To better understand the mechanism of stability of ZIF-8 structure, control experiments on hydrolysis of ZIF-8 powder in aqueous conditions were designed and performed. The continuous release of Zn2+ from ZIF-8 structure to the aqueous solution was detected along with the change in pH value of the aqueous system. The presence of 2-methylimidazolate in aqueous solution can stabilize the ZIF-8 structure of both membrane and crystals. These evidences confirm that ZIF-8 crystals can degrade in water due to the dissolution of ZIF-8. The rate and extent of the dissolution depends on the ZIF-8 crystal to water mass ratio.

Abstract:Compared to inorganic supports,polymeric supports can offer additional benefits,e.g.,easier processing and cheaper.However,the organic surface has weak adhesion to the zeolitic imidazolate frameworks(ZIFs)membrane layer,which usually requires complex surface modification or seeding.Herein,we demonstrate that a dual-layer asymmetric polymer support prepared by a simple spinning process is a good candidate for the preparation of ZIF-8 membrane.The inner layer of the support is an organic hol-low fiber(PES)with finger-like pores,and the outer layer is a ZnO-PES composite layer with finger-like pores also.The ZnO-PES composite layer is expected to contain uniform ZnO crystals in the polymer matrix,i.e.,the ZnO particles in the skin layer of the support are not easy to fall off.Under the induction of ZnO particles in the outer layers,continuous ZIF-8 membranes can be prepared by single in-situ crys-tallization,showing good adhesion to the supports.The obtained ZIF-8 membranes show a H2 permeance of 8.7×10-8 mol·m-2·s-1·Pa-1 with a H2/N2 ideal separation selectivity of 18.0.The design and prepa-ration of this dual-layer polymer support is expected to promote the large-scale application of MOF membranes on polymer supports.

Abstract:The unique imidazole bridge structure of ZIF-8 nanocrystals makes it flexible and low elastic modulus, which can withstand more flexible crystal deformation and have superior bearing capacity and anti-wear effect. In this work, an in-situ growth strategy of ZIF-8 nanocrystals on the surface of carbon fibers (CFs) was used for the enhancement of interfacial combination and out-of-plane properties between CFs and Poly(hexahydrotriazine)s (PHT) matrix. The introduction of ZIF-8 nanocrystals functionalized CFs to disperse and transfer more load and energy, and the interface performance between two phases were characterized via mechanical and tribological tests. The results indicated that the tensile strength of ZIF-8 grafted on CFs increased due to the improved rough surface, bonding area and active chemical groups of CFs. The fracture mechanism of ZIF-8 based composites were investigated by morphology observation on the interface. In addition, the wear rate of ZIF-8 based composites reduced by 43.7% when compared to neat CF. The improvement of mechanical and tribological properties depends on the introduction of ZIF-8 which improves the interfacial adhesion between CFs and resin matrix, and further facilitates the load transfer from interface to CFs.

Abstract:ZIF-8 [Zn(MIM)(2), MIM=2-methylimidazole] samples were synthesized by a vapor-assisted conversion method with n-heptane, methanol, and DMF, respectively. X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen (N-2) adsorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the properties of the ZIF-8 samples. The particle sizes of the ZIF-8 samples synthesized with methanol, DMF, and n-heptane were 10-20, 60-90, and 30-50m, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first time that ZIF-8 has been synthesized through vapor-assisted conversion with nonpolar n-heptane. For the ZIF-8 synthesis by this method, 0.5mL of solvent was sufficient, greatly reducing the solvent dosage required compared with a traditional solvothermal method. In our study, on the crystallization of ZIF-8 synthesis by different liquid phases at 50 and 100 degrees C, we found that the transformation rate from the solid reagents to ZIF-8 phase with n-heptane was faster than that with methanol or DMF.

Abstract:The solvothermal method was utilized to synthesize the crystal of ZIF-8 by taking the molar ratio of the metal ions to the organic ligands of 2:1 at 120 °C. This was the best technological condition. Meanwhile, as demonstrated in characterization of the X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetry (TGA) and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). SEM was showed that the crystal of ZIF-8 was endowed with high crystallinity and prismatic structure, with the size range of 5–10 μm, the BET specific surface area of the crystal was 739.4 m2 g−1. TGA was showed that its thermal stability could live up to 600 °C. FTIR was showed that the acid is completely protonated, and the Zn2+ and the 2-Methylimidazole are formed the crystal ZIF-8, in addition, O–Zn adsorption peak also existed in the crystal ZIF-8. Then the structure activity relationship of the crystal ZIF-8 synthesis, thermal stability and N2 sorption property was studied.

Abstract:A gravimetric study of the solvothermal dimethylformamide-mediated crystallisation of the metal–organic framework ZIF-8 has enabled the rate constants and activation energies of the nucleation and crystal growth processes to be determined. The kinetics analyses reveal the crystallisation is nucleation controlled with activation energies for nucleation and crystal growth of 115.1 and 87.7 kJ mol−1, respectively. The results are compared to the crystallisation kinetics for other syntheses of ZIF-8 and other MOFs to reveal the importance that different solvents, different metal ion/organic linker ratios and the presence of deprotonating modulators have on these processes. Temporal ex situ monitoring of the crystal morphology and surface topography during crystallisation reveals the crystals evolve to the equilibrium rhombic dodecahedral morphology via edge-truncated cubic and corner-truncated rhombic dodecahedral habits while relatively smooth surfaces containing large truncated rhombic surface terraces and growth spirals develop through rough surfaces consisting of numerous ill-defined small growth islands and steps. The combination of techniques applied over different size scales provides important understanding for potential control over the crystal properties of MOFs for new application or enhanced performance in current applications.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride （GCN） was deposited on alumina hollow fibers by chemical vapor deposition for modification,and ZIF-8 membranes were prepared by in-situ crystallization on the modified supports.The effects of GCN loading temperature,loading amount,precursor type and the amount of sodium formate in the synthesis solution were investigated by X-ray diffraction （XRD）,Fourier infrared spectroscopy （FTIR）,scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and gas permeation tests.It was found that the suitable temperature for loading GCN onto the alumina support surface was 350℃.The higher the temperature,the higher the C/N ratio of GCN on the support surface and the fewer N sites,which was less favorable for the in-situ crystallization of ZIF-8 membranes.At the same loading temperature,the longer the loading time,the higher the coverage （loading amount） of GCN on the alumina support.If the loading amount was too small,a dense membrane cannot be formed.Compared with melamine,using urea as the precursor for chemical vapor deposition,the loading amount decreased significantly under the same loading conditions,and finally a dense membrane could not be formed.The content of sodium formate in the synthesis solution was regulated and controlled,and the optimized formula of the synthesis solution was that the molar ratio of Zn Cl 2 ,Hmim （2-methylimidazole）,HCOONa and CH 3 OH was 1:1.5:2.0:250.The obtained ZIF-8 membrane showed the H 2 permeance of 6.11×10 -7 mol/（Pa·s·m~2）,and the ideal separation selectivity of H 2 /N 2 was 5.1.
Defects in ZIF-8 crystallization and their impact on mechanical properties

Abstract:The growth process of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) defines their properties for functional applications. However, it is very plausible that defects may occur during the crystallization of even seemingly perfect MOFs, such as ZIF-8, and yet, direct probing of such structural defects has been challenging due to the lack of techniques to locally examine individual nanocrystals. Now, we directly study local defects - such as missing linkers or metal vacancies - in ZIF-8 nano- and microcrystals with near-field infrared nanospectroscopy combined with density function theory calculations. We have tracked the chemical changes during crystallization and found that structural defects like zinc-rich regions gradually disappear with the ripening of the crystals, while missing linker defects prevail. The resulting open metal sites reduce the Young's modulus, as measured with tip force microscopy and supported by theoretical modelling, but also open the door for defect engineering to tune the adsorption and catalytic performance of ZIF-8.

On the mechanism of electron-beam-induced structural degradation in ZIF-8 and its electron dose tolerance

Abstract:Zeolitic-imidazolate-frameworks (ZIFs) are crystalline microporous materials that have already shown promising application potential in areas such as gas adsorption and catalysis. Further research advances include studies on integrating ZIFs into nanodevice concepts. In detail for the application e.g. of electron-beam-assisted structural modifications or patterning, there is a need to understand potential structural degradation processes caused by such electron beams. Advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has demonstrated its ability to study structures at the nanoscale. Here, we systematically investigated electron-beam-induced loss in crystallinity in ZIF-8 under various experimental conditions, using as measure the attenuation of the intensity and the relative displacement of electron diffraction Bragg spots with increasing cumulative electron dose. The intensity and the fading of the {110} Bragg spots indicate the overall stability of the ZIF-8 unit-cell structure, while the {431} Bragg spots are a measure of the stability of ZIF-8’s micropore structure. We considered a relative loss of Bragg spot intensity of 37% as the threshold for the critical total electron dose, which was found to be different for different Bragg planes, with 35.6 ± 8.4 e-Å-2 for {110} and 11.4 ± 3.0 e-Å-2 for {431}. However, the critical dose per breakage of Zn-N bonds in a ZnN4 tetrahedra per different Bragg plane was found to be ~ 3 e-Å-2. This indicates continuous, simultaneous breakage of Zn-N bonds throughout the crystal, confirming radiolysis as the dominant damage mechanism. In addition, we investigated the effects of TEM experiment parameters, including acceleration voltage, electron dose rate, cryogenic sample temperature, in-situ sample drying, as well as change in conductivity of the sample substrate (e.g., graphene). Our results unravel the degradation mechanisms in ZIF-8 and provide threshold parameters for maximizing resolution in electron-beam-assisted experiments and processes.

Formate modulated solvothermal synthesis of ZIF-8 investigated using time-resolved in situ X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy

Abstract:Time-resolved investigations using in situ energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction in tandem with ex situscanning electron microscopy revealed that solvothermal crystallisation of ZIF-8 in methanol solvent and in the presence of sodium formate as a simple monodentate ligand (modulator) is a rapid process yielding big, high-quality single crystals in short time (<4 h). Kinetic analysis of crystallisation curves was performed by applying the Avrami–Erofe'ev and Gualtieri models. The analyses revealed that the weakly basic formate modulator acts as a base in deprotonation equilibria (deprotonation of the bridging 2-methylimidazole ligand) rather than as a competitive ligand in coordination equilibria at the metal (Zn2+) centres. This is in contrast to the coordination modulation function of formate in ZIF-8 synthesis at room temperature. Crystal shape evolves with time in the presence of formate from cubes with truncated edges to rhombic dodecahedra. The latter shape represents most likely the stable equilibrium morphology of ZIF-8.

Abstract:We employ all-atom well-tempered metadynamics simulations to study the mechanistic details of both the early stages of nucleation and crystal decomposition for the benchmark metal–organic framework (MOF) ZIF-8. To do so, we developed and validated a force field that reliably models the modes of coordination bonds via a Morse potential functional form and employs cationic and anionic dummy atoms to capture coordination symmetry. We also explored a set of physically relevant collective variables and carefully selected an appropriate subset for our problem at hand. After a rapid increase of the Zn–N connectivity, we observe the evaporation of small clusters in favor of a few large clusters, which leads to the formation of an amorphous highly connected aggregate. Zn(MIm)42− and Zn(MIm)3− complexes are observed with lifetimes in the order of a few picoseconds, while larger structures, such as four-, five-, and six-membered rings, have substantially longer lifetimes of a few nanoseconds. The free ligands act as "templating agents" for the formation of sodalite cages. ZIF-8 crystal decomposition results in the formation of a vitreous phase. Our findings contribute to a fundamental understanding of MOF's synthesis that paves the way to controlling synthesis products. Furthermore, our developed force field and methodology can be applied to model solution processes that require coordination bond reactivity for other ZIFs besides ZIF-8.

Abstract:In recent years, the synthesis, crystalline structure, and applications of zeolite imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) have attracted extensive attention. Since the ZIF-L phase was synthesized, a new phase was observed during the heating process, but its crystal structure is unknown. The unknown new phase, which was named ZIF-L300 in this study, was confirmed again. In this study, the X-ray powder diffraction technique and Rietveld refinement were used to solve the crystalline structure of the unknown ZIF-L300 phase. The results demonstrate that ZIF-L300 has the same chemical formula (ZnC8N4H10) as in ZIF-8 and belongs to a hexagonal structure with a space group of P61. The lattice parameters have been determined as follows: a = b = 8.708(7) Å, c = 24.195(19) Å, α = β = 90°, and γ = 120°. The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) technique was also used to extract the local atomic structures. The in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique was used to monitor the structural evolution of the as-prepared ZIF-L in a temperature range from room temperature to 600 °C. The results show that the sample experiences a change process from the initial ZIF-L orthorhombic phase (<210 °C), to the ZIF-L300 hexagonal phase (∼300 °C), then to an amorphous phase (∼390 °C), and finally to a zincite ZnO phase (>420 °C). These sorts of structural information are helpful to the application of ZIF materials and enrich the knowledge of the thermal stability of ZIF materials.

Abstract:The structural flexibility of a topical zeolitic imidazolate framework with sodalite topology, termed ZIF-8, has been elucidated through liquid intrusion under moderate pressures (i.e. tens of MPa). By tracking the evolution of water intrusion pressure under cyclic conditions, we interrogate the role of the gate-opening mechanism controlling the size variation of the pore channels of ZIF-8. Interestingly, we demonstrate that its channel deformation is recoverable through structural relaxation over time, hence revealing the viscoelastic mechanical response in ZIF-8. We propose a simple approach employing a glycerol-water solution mixture, which can significantly enhance the sensitivity of intrusion pressure for the detection of structural deformation in ZIF-8. By leveraging the time-dependent gate-opening phenomenon in ZIF-8, we achieved a notable improvement (50%) in energy dissipation during multicycle mechanical deformation experiments.

Abstract:Here we describe the synthesis of a compositional series of metal-organic framework crystalline-inorganic glass composites (MOF-CIGCs) containing ZIF-8 and an inorganic phosphate glass, 20Na2O-10NaCl-70P2O5, to expand the library of host matrices for metal-organic frameworks. By careful selection of the inorganic glass component, a relatively high loading of ZIF-8 (70 wt%) was achieved, which is the active component of the composite. A Zn...O-P interfacial bond, previously identified in similar composites/hybrid blends, was suggested by analysis of the total scattering pair distribution function data. Additionally, CO2 and N2 sorption and variable-temperature PXRD experiments were performed to assess the composites' properties.

Synchronously Repairing Core/Surface Defects of Carbon Fibers by In Situ Growth of ZIF-8 and Uniquely Matched High-Energy Irradiation

Abstract:Currently, the actual mechanical properties of carbon fibers (CF) differ significantly from the theoretical values. This is primarily attributed to significant limitations imposed by structural defects, greatly hindering the widespread application of CF. To solve this problem, we used in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and γ rays to modulate the core-shell of CF in this study. For the surface structure of CF during the process of γ irradiation, the organic structure within ZIF-8 gradually degrades and forms a cross-linking structure with the surface defects of the CF. This process significantly enhances the binding strength between inorganic material from the postdecomposition of ZIF-8 and the carbon layer on the surface of CF, repairing the surface defects. For the internal structure of CF, γ irradiation can improve the orientation of the internal micropores of CF and increase the degree of internal graphitization of CF. In this paper, an in-depth analysis of CF before and after repair was conducted by using characterization techniques such as nanoindentation and ultrasmall angle X-ray scattering (USAXS). Compared to unmodified CF, its mechanical properties improved by approximately 19.99%, which exceeds that in approximately 95% of similar works in the field.

Abstract:Here, the ZnO/polyacrylamide (ZnO/PAM) macroporous composite monolith was first prepared through the radical polymerization of acrylamide in ZnO‐costabilized CO2‐in‐water Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs). An efficient and green synthesis method was used to prepare the ZnO/PAM porous precursor materials, and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were used as a metal ion source to grow the metal organic frameworks (MOF) phase through secondary recrystallization, thereby synthesizing the target MOF/PAM porous monolith. The effects of the contents of ZnO NPs on the formation of HIPEs and properties of the target MOF/PAM composites for the photocatalytic degradation of cationic dye were studied. As the content of ZnO NPs increased to 3.75 wt%, the composite monolith had high mechanical stress (0.24 MPa) at 80% strain and recovered their shape. The as‐synthesized ZIF‐8/PAM composites were characterized using X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), energy dispersive X‐ray spectrometer (EDS) mapping, and TG methods. SEM images showed that the hybrid materials were interconnected, and the sizes of the open macropore and interconnected pore throats were 30–125 and about 2–20 μm, respectively. In addition, the ZIF‐8/PAM material could be used as a high‐efficiency photocatalyst to remove the cationic dye at a fast rate (88.6%).

Abstract:Among various metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF), constructed by the regular arrangement of 2-methylimidazole and metal ions, has garnered significant attention due to its distinctive crystals and pore structures. Variations in the sizes and shapes of ZIF crystals have been reported by changing the synthesis parameters, such as the molar ratios of organic ligands to metal ions, choice of solvents, and temperatures. Nonetheless, the giant ZIF-8 single crystals beyond the typical range have rarely been reported. Herein, we present the synthesis of millimeter-scale single crystal ZIF-8 using the solvothermal method in N,N-diethylformamide. The resulting 1-mm single crystal is carefully characterized through N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy, and other analytical techniques. Additionally, single-crystal X-ray diffraction is employed to comprehensively investigate the framework's mobility at various temperatures. Millimeter-sized ZIF-8 single crystals were synthesized using the solvothermal method. These crystals exhibit a notable BET surface area of 1681 m 2 ∙g −1 and demonstrate a reversible change in their crystal structure.

Abstract:Wet chemical etching has been one crucial method in the design strategy of functional materials, from microfabrication to nanoparticle synthesis. It has been suggested that shapes of building blocks could change the structures that particles assemble into. While much effort has been devoted to ZIF-8 colloids to create particles with different shapes, such as convex polyhedral particles, cubic particles, and hollowing microboxes, micro or nanoporous ZIF-8 colloids with high quality and high yield remain largely underexplored because of limited fundamental understanding of the etching mechanism. Here we achieved the preparation of porous metal–organic framework (MOF) particles in colloids by wet chemical etching of as-synthesized parent particles. To understand the etching mechanisms, the pH value of the etching solution was modified as a controllable parameter. Different types of porous ZIF-8 particles were observed as the etching solution pH was varied. Quantitatively, the 3D electron tomography technique was applied to analyze porous ZIF-8 particles giving many structure properties such as the surface area, pore size and distribution, and skeletonization. This 3D quantification reveals the advantage of the porous structure, which will benefit its potential application after atomic doping treatment. The porous ZIF-8 colloids can also self-assemble into different superstructures facilitated by its novel morphology, and a linear polymerization was observed in one type of porous ZIF-8 colloid. The assembled superstructure depends on particles' orientation in solution, and the self-assembly kinetics was captured by in situ microscopy. Abstract:Calcination temperature plays a key role in determining the phase purity, composition and microstructures for the zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) derived transition metal oxides materials, the investigation on the influences of the calcination temperature during ZIFs derivative process is helpful to dissect the reaction mechanism and the transformation process. The present work is aimed at constructing ZnWO4 nanocrystals derived from ZIF-8 via a facile strategy, and systematical study on the influences of calcination temperature during ZIFs derivative process on the microstructure, phase purity and composition of the final product. More importantly, the probable evolution mechanisms for the microstructure and the composition of the as-obtained final products are proposed. It is found that the crystallinity, composition, microstructure and electrochemical performances of the ZnWO4 samples strongly depend on the calcination temperature. When the calcination temperature is lower than 700°C (500 and 600°C), the ZnWO4/C composite nanocrystals can be obtained. Whereas the as-synthesized products are pure ZnWO4 nanocrystals featuring single crystalline under the higher calcination temperatures (700-900°C). Due to the single crystalline structure and the optimal microstructures, the ZnWO4 sample obtained at 800°C exhibits the superior electrochemical performances when applied as anode material for lithium-ion batteries such as excellent cyclic stability, higher capacity and better rate capability. The present work may provide the deep insight into the Zn-based materials derived from the ZIF-8, and paves a facile and general strategy for the precise control the microstructures and composition of the other transition metal oxides derived from ZIFs.
