Abstract:The escalating demand for enhanced therapeutic efficacy and reduced adverse effects in the pharmaceutical domain has catalyzed a new frontier of innovation and research in the field of pharmacy: novel drug delivery systems. These systems are designed to address the limitations of conventional drug administration, such as abbreviated half-life, inadequate targeting, low solubility, and bioavailability. As the disciplines of pharmacy, materials science, and biomedicine continue to advance and converge, the development of efficient and safe drug delivery systems, including biopharmaceutical formulations, has garnered significant attention both domestically and internationally. This article presents an overview of the latest advancements in drug delivery systems, categorized into four primary areas: carrier-based and coupling-based targeted drug delivery systems, intelligent drug delivery systems, and drug delivery devices, based on their main objectives and methodologies. Additionally, it critically analyzes the technological bottlenecks, current research challenges, and future trends in the application of novel drug delivery systems.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem this paper attempts to address is improving the efficacy of drug therapy and reducing adverse reactions by developing Novel Drug Delivery Systems (NDDS) to overcome the limitations of traditional drug delivery methods. Specifically, these limitations include short drug half-life, insufficient targeting, low solubility, and poor bioavailability. The paper highlights the latest advancements in the following four areas: 1. **Carrier-based targeted drug delivery systems**: Including nano drug delivery systems (such as liposomes, polymer nanoparticles, etc.), these systems can enhance the stability and targeting ability of drugs. 2. **Conjugation-based targeted drug delivery systems**: Achieving precise delivery to specific cells or tissues by conjugating drugs with specific molecules. 3. **Smart drug delivery systems**: Utilizing responsive materials and technologies to release drugs under specific conditions, thereby improving efficacy and safety. 4. **Drug delivery devices**: Such as 3D printing technology, transdermal formulations, and implantable catheters, these devices can achieve sustained release and precise control of drugs. Additionally, the paper analyzes the technical bottlenecks, current research challenges, and future development trends faced by novel drug delivery systems in their application. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, these novel drug delivery systems are expected to play a significant role in clinical applications, enhancing the efficacy and safety of drug therapy.
