Abstract:Salivary glands tumors are uncommon neoplasms with variable incidence, heterogenous histologies and unpredictable biological behaviour. Most tumors are located in the parotid gland. Benign salivary tumors represent 54–79% of cases and pleomorphic adenoma is frequently diagnosed in this group. Salivary glands malignant tumors that are more commonly diagnosed are adenoid cystic carcinomas and mucoepidermoid carcinomas. Because of their diversity and overlapping features, these tumors require complex methods of evaluation. Diagnostic procedures include imaging techniques combined with clinical examination, fine needle aspiration and histopathological investigation of the excised specimens. This narrative review describes the advances in the diagnosis methods of these unusual tumors—from histomorphology to artificial intelligence algorithms.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the diagnostic dilemma of salivary gland tumors. Salivary gland tumors are a rare and highly heterogeneous type of tumors, with a widely varying incidence rate and unpredictable biological behavior. Due to the diversity and overlapping characteristics of these tumors, complex evaluation methods are required for accurate diagnosis. The paper mainly focuses on the progress of diagnostic methods from histomorphology to artificial intelligence algorithms, aiming to improve the diagnostic accuracy of these rare tumors. Specifically, the paper explores the following aspects: 1. **New concepts of classification and grading**: The paper reviews the evolution process of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of salivary gland tumors, discusses different types of benign and malignant tumors, and introduces new entities introduced in the latest WHO classification. 2. **Progress in immunohistochemical analysis**: The paper describes in detail the application of immunohistochemical markers in the diagnosis of salivary gland tumors, especially how these markers help distinguish different types of tumors and their histological features. 3. **Development of computer - aided diagnostic tools**: The paper also discusses the application of computer - aided diagnostic tools in interpreting medical images, which help doctors diagnose salivary gland tumors more accurately. Through research in these aspects, the paper aims to provide clinicians with more comprehensive and accurate diagnostic methods, thereby improving the treatment outcomes and prognoses of patients.
