Abstract:Two coupled small parameter ordinary differential equations were considered. The solutions of differential equations will change rapidly near both sides of the boundary layer. Firstly, the properties were studied for differential equations. Secondly, the asymptotic properties of differential equations were discussed. Thirdly, the numerical methods with zero approximation were constructed for both left side and right side singular component differential equations. Finally, error analyses were given.

History and Overview

Abstract:Differential Equations are among the most important Mathematical tools used in creating models in the science, engineering, economics, mathematics, physics, aeronautics, astronomy, dynamics, biology, chemistry, medicine, environmental sciences, social sciences, banking and many other areas [7]. A differential equation that has only one independent variable is called an Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE), and all derivatives in it are taken with respect to that variable. Most often, the variable is time, t; although, I will use x in this paper as the independent variable. The differential equation where the unknown function depends on two or more variables is referred to as Partial Differential Equations (PDE). Ordinary differential equations can be solved by a variety of methods, analytical and numerical. Although there are many analytic methods for finding the solution of differential equations, there exist quite a number of differential equations that cannot be solved analytically [8]. This means that the solution cannot be expressed as the sum of a finite number of elementary functions (polynomials, exponentials, trigonometric, and hyperbolic functions). For simple differential equations, it is possible to find closed form solutions [9]. But many differential equations arising in applications are so complicated that it is sometimes impractical to have solution formulas; or at least if a solution formula is available, it may involve integrals that can be calculated only by using a numerical quadrature formula. In either case, numerical methods provide a powerful alternative tool for solving the differential equations under the prescribed initial condition or conditions [9]. In this paper, I present the basic and commonly used numerical and analytical methods of solving ordinary differential equations.

Abstract:The method of this paper is my original creation. A new method for solving linear differential equations is proposed in this paper. The important conclusion of this paper is that arbitrary order linear ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients can be solved by the method of recursion and reduction of order under some conditions which easily be satisfied in practical applications.

Abstract:A review of the most popular Linear Multistep (LM) Methods for solving Ordinary Differential Equations numerically is presented. These methods are first derived from first principles, and are discussed in terms of their order, consistency, and various types of stability. Particular varieties of stability that may not be familiar, are briefly defined first. The methods that are included are the Adams-Bashforth Methods, Adams-Moulton Methods, and Backwards Differentiation Formulas. Advantages and disadvantages of these methods are also described. Not much prior knowledge of numerical methods or ordinary differential equations is required, although knowledge of basic topics from calculus is assumed.

Abstract:In the present paper,we present an analytical polynomial particular solutions method(MPPS)for solving various ordinary differential operators in the cases of timeindependent and time-dependent equations.By using these formulae,the solutions can be written explicitly in terms of monomial and we can obtain the approximate polynomial particular solutions for linear or nonlinear differential operators.For example,these formulae can be implemented to solve the differential system with discontinuous right hand side term.A series of numerical examples have been given with excellent results.These results show that our proposed method has high accuracy and corresponding errors are very stable for higher order polynomial basis functions.

Abstract:The term differential-algebraic equation was coined to comprise differential equations with constraints (differential equations on manifolds) and singular implicit differential equations. Such problems arise in a variety of applications, e.g. constrained mechanical systems, fluid dynamics, chemical reaction kinetics, simulation of electrical networks, and control engineering. From a more theoretical viewpoint, the study of differential-algebraic problems gives insight into the behaviour of numerical methods for stiff ordinary differential equations. These lecture notes provide a self-contained and comprehensive treatment of the numerical solution of differential-algebraic systems using Runge-Kutta methods, and also extrapolation methods. Readers are expected to have a background in the numerical treatment of ordinary differential equations. The subject is treated in its various aspects ranging from the theory through the analysis to implementation and applications.

Abstract:Ordinary differential equations are the mathematical formulation for a great variety of problems in science and engineering, and frequently, two different problems are equivalent from a mathematical point of view when they are formulated by the same equations. Students acquire the knowledge of how to solve these equations (at least some types of them) using protocols and strict algorithms of mathematical calculation without thinking about the meaning of the equation. The aim of this work is that students learn to design network models or circuits in this way; with simple knowledge of them, students can establish the association of electric circuits and differential equations and their equivalences, from a formal point of view, that allows them to associate knowledge of two disciplines and promote the use of this interdisciplinary approach to address complex problems. Therefore, they learn to use a multidisciplinary tool that allows them to solve these kinds of equations, even students of first course of engineering, whatever the order, grade or type of non-linearity. This methodology has been implemented in numerous final degree projects in engineering and science, e.g., chemical engineering, building engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, architecture, etc. Applications are presented to illustrate the subject of this manuscript.

Abstract:One of the most difficult problems in the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and in differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) is the development of methods for dealing with highly oscillatory systems. These types of systems arise, for example, in vehicle simulation when modelling the suspension system or tyres, in models for contact and impact, in flexible body simulation from vibrations in the structural model, in molecular dynamics, in orbital mechanics, and in circuit simulation. Standard numerical methods can require a huge number of time-steps to track the oscillations, and even with small stepsizes they can alter the dynamics, unless the method is chosen very carefully.

Abstract:The goal of the present paper is to propose an enhanced ordinary differential equation solver by exploitation of the powerful equivalence method of Élie Cartan. This solver returns a target equation equivalent to the equation to be solved and the transformation realizing the equivalence. The target ODE is a member of a dictionary of ODEs, that are regarded as well-known, or at least well-studied. The dictionary considered in this article comprises the ODEs in a book of Kamke. The major advantage of our solver is that the equivalence transformation is obtained without integrating differential equations. We provide also a theoretical contribution revealing the relationship between the change of coordinates that maps two differential equations and their symmetry pseudo-groups.

Abstract:There are several common procedures used to numerically integrate second-order ordinary differential equations. The most common one is to reduce the equation's order by duplicating the number of variables. This allows one to take advantage of the family of Runge–Kutta methods or the Adams family of multi-step methods. Another approach is the use of methods that have been developed to directly integrate an ordinary differential equation without increasing the number of variables. An important drawback when using Runge–Kutta methods is that when one tries to apply them to differential algebraic equations, they require a reduction in the index, leading to a need for stabilization methods to remove the drift. In this paper, a new family of methods for the direct integration of second-order ordinary differential equations is presented. These methods can be considered as a generalization of the central differences method. The methods are classified according to the number of derivatives they take into account (degree). They include some parameters that can be chosen to configure the equation's behavior. Some sets of parameters were studied, and some examples belonging to structural dynamics and multibody dynamics are presented. An example of the application of the method to a differential algebraic equation is also included.

Abstract:We have already dealt with the problem of solving First Order Differential Equations (1ODEs) presenting elementary functions before in [1, 2]. In this present paper, we have established solid theoretical basis through a relation between the 1ODE we are dealing with and a rational second order ordinary differential equation, presenting a Liouvillian first Integral. Here, we have expanded the results in [3], where we have establish a theoretical background to deal with rational second order ordinary differential equations (2ODEs) via the S-function method. Using this generalisation and other results hereby introduced, we have produced a method to integrate the 1ODE under scrutiny. Our methods and algorithm are capable to deal efficiently with chaotic systems, determining regions of integrability.

Abstract:Deep learning has become a popular tool across many scientific fields, including the study of differential equations, particularly partial differential equations. This work introduces the basic principles of deep learning and the Deep Galerkin method, which uses deep neural networks to solve differential equations. This primer aims to provide technical and practical insights into the Deep Galerkin method and its implementation. We demonstrate how to solve the one-dimensional heat equation step-by-step. We also show how to apply the Deep Galerkin method to solve systems of ordinary differential equations and integral equations, such as the Fredholm of the second kind. Additionally, we provide code snippets within the text and the complete source code on Github. The examples are designed so that one can run them on a simple computer without needing a GPU.

Abstract:We study second order linear homogeneous differential equations a(x)y'' + b(x)y' + c(x)y = 0 with analytic coefficients in a neighborhood of a regular singularity in the sense of Frobenius. These equations are model for a number of natural phenomena in sciences and applications in engineering. We address questions which can be divided in the following groups: (i) Regularity of solutions. (ii) Analytic classification of the differential equation. (iii) Formal and differentiable rigidity. (iv) Synthesis and uniqueness of ODEs with a prescribed solution. Our approach is inspired by elements from analytic theory of singularities and complex foliations, adapted to this framework. Our results also reinforce the connection between classical methods in second order analytic ODEs and (geometric) theory of singularities. Our results, though of a clear theoretical content, are important in justifying many procedures in the solution of such equations.

Abstract:In this article, firstly we develop a method for a type of difference equations, applicable to solve approximately a class of first order ordinary differential equation systems. In a second step, we apply the results obtained to solve a non-linear two point boundary value problem relating a flight mechanics model. We highlight the algorithm obtained seems to be robust and of easy computational implementation.

Abstract:Two decades ago many people thought that there was very little left to occupy the researcher in the numerical initial value problem for ordinary differential equations; but there has since been an enormous increase in the effort devoted to this problem and related software. Is everything finally done so we can turn to more difficult areas? This paper examines the development of numerical solution techniques from the identification of a problem to the never-final preparation of automatic codes for the solution of classes of similar problems. It discusses a number of ODE problems that are only a part of the way along this path of development. These problems include ones with highly oscillatory solutions, ones with frequent discontinuities, and ones in which very little accuracy is needed (and which should be integrated at low cost). There is a spectrum of problems, from ones that can now be solved using very robust software to ones that we still do not know how to solve effectively. The paper then surveys some of the recent work that has advanced the state of the art or offers promise for the future. This paper is the written version of a talk presented at the spring meeting of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Toronto, June 1979.
