Abstract:Supramolecular chirality has attracted a great deal of attention as a platform for both fundamental study and chirality amplification in various research fields. Compared with the “sergeants‐and‐soldiers” principle, the “majority‐rules” principle, which affects chirality amplification in supramolecular systems, is rarely reported for nano/microstructures. Here, chiral tetrachloro‐substituted perylene diimides are synthesized that self‐assemble into chiral supramolecules with different degrees of enantiomeric excess (ee). Interestingly, it is found that quasi‐2D crystals are gradually transferred to 1D nanowires (NWs) with ee from 100% to 0%. In the racemic system, chiral self‐discrimination is observed due to the greater thermodynamic stability of heterochiral crystals than the homochiral counterparts, judging from the theoretical studies. Circular dichroism analysis indicates that the self‐assembled system with different ee values shows different peaks due to their unique molecular ordering for supramolecular exciton coupling. On measurement in optoelectronic devices, racemic 1D NWs show better charge transport ability than enantiomeric quasi‐2D crystals. These results provide guidelines for tuning the supramolecular chirality and optoelectronic performance of self‐assembled systems via the “majority‐rules” principle.

Abstract:Crystallization of two enantiomers Delta-1 and Lambda-1 was achieved by using an achiral flexible ligand H4L (2,2'-[1,2-ethanediylbis[(hydroxyethylimino)methylene]]bis[6-methoxy-4-methyl-phenol]). The absolute configurations of the enantiomers in P3(1)21 (Delta-1) and P3(2)21 (Lambda-1) are confirmed by the X-ray single crystal diffraction. Solid-state circular dichroism spectra show that two enantiomers have absorption peaks of mirror symmetry. The experimental energy barrier of 88.9 K derived from the alternating-current magnetic measurements is consistent with the energy gap (89.9 K) between two lowest Kramers doublets calculated by ab initio method.

Abstract:The spontaneous resolution of racemates, from natural compounds to artificial structures, has long been pursued to shed light on the origin of homochirality in life. Even though diverse synthetic systems have been elegantly devised to elaborate the underlying principles of spontaneous symmetry breaking, their complexity is still unparalleled to the natural masterpieces including DNA helix and proteins, which convey remarkable coalescence at both molecular and supramolecular levels. Here, we report on the spontaneous resolution of a pair of homochiral entities from a racemic mixture of a triply interlocked cage-catenane comprising 720 possible stereoisomers. This cage-catenane comprises six methyldithiane ring-containing linkers (denoted rac-2). As each methyldithiane ring has two chiral centers, it exhibits four possible diastereomers. These otherwise equimolar diastereomers are preferentially differentiated with the equatorial conformers over their axial analogues, leading to the dominant formation of (S, R)-2 and (R, S)-2, i.e., diastereomeric enrichment at the molecular level. This diastereomeric enrichment is unbiasedly transferred from precursor rac-2 to cage-catenane rac-4, from which a pair of homochirals (S, R)6-4 and (R, S)6-4 is narcissistically self-sorted upon crystallization. This powerful symmetry breaking is attributed to a supramolecular synergy of directional π-π stacking with the multivalency of erstwhile weak S···S contacts (with an unusual distance of 3.09 Å) that are cooperatively arranged in a helical fashion. This work highlights the attainability of complex homochiral entities by resorting to coalesced covalent and noncovalent contributions and therefore provides additional clues to the symmetry breaking of sophisticated yet well-defined architectures.

Abstract:The enantiomers of complex 1 (1Δ and 1Λ), [Cd(tipa)(μ3-OH)·NO3·EtOH·DMF]n (tipa = tris(4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)amine), have been obtained by spontaneous resolution upon crystallization in the absence of any enantiopure substance. Complex 1 shows an unprecedented 3D (3,12)-connected metal–organic framework with ttt topology consisting of cubic [Cd4(μ3-OH)4] clusters and propeller-like ligands. The anion-exchange and iodine uptake behaviors of 1 are investigated.

Abstract:Despite significant progress achieved in the preparation of chiral nanoparticles, the enantioseparation of racemates still presents a big challenge in nanomaterial research. Herein, we report the synthesis and structural characterization of racemic anisotropic nanocluster Ag30(C2B10H9S3)8Dppm6 (Ag30-rac), which is protected by mixed carboranetrithiolate and phosphine ligands. Spontaneous self-resolution of the racemates was realized through conglomerate crystallization in dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The homochiral nanoclusters in the racemic conglomerates adopt enantiomeric helical self-assemblies (R/L-Ag30). Diverse noncovalent interactions as the driving force in directing superstructure packing were elucidated in detail. Furthermore, the nanoclusters show red luminescence in both solid and solution states, and the racemic conglomerates display a mirror-image CPL response. This work provides atom-precise helical nanoparticle superstructures that facilitate an in-depth understanding of the helical-assembly mechanism.Spontaneous self-resolution of nanosized silver cluster racemates is reported, which provides a platform to investigate self-assembly mechanisms and weak interactions in the helical NP assembly.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Chirality, with its intrinsic symmetry-breaking feature, is frequently utilized in the creation of acentric crystalline functional materials that exhibit intriguing optoelectronic properties. On the other hand, the development of chiral crystals from achiral molecules offers a solution that bypasses the need for enantiopure motifs, presenting a promising alternative and thereby expanding the possibilities of the self-assembly toolkit. Nevertheless, the rational design of achiral molecules that prefer spontaneous symmetry breaking during crystallization has so far been obscure. In this study, we present a series of six achiral molecules, demonstrating that when these conformationally flexible molecules adopt a cis-conformation and engage in multiple non-covalent interactions along a helical path, they collectively self-assemble into chiral superstructures consisting of single-handed supramolecular columns. When these homochiral supramolecular columns align in parallel, they form polar crystals that exhibit intense luminescence upon grinding or scraping. We therefore demonstrate our molecular design strategy could significantly increase the likelihood of symmetry breaking in achiral molecular synthons during self-assembly, offering a facile access to novel chiral crystalline materials with unique optoelectronic properties.

Abstract:We have investigated the self-assembly of 2,4,6-tris(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPTZ) molecule on Au(111) surface using an ultrahigh vacuum low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The TPTZ molecules form enantiomorphous domains composed of rhombic supercells with various periods depending on the coverage of molecules, that is, "1 x 1" and "2 x 2" structures at low coverages, and "6 x 6", "7 x 7", and "8 x 8" structures at higher coverages. In a unit cell of a certain enantiomer, the two triangular half-unit cells, consisting of adsorbed TPTZ molecules, are centrosymmetric to each other. The molecules inside each half-unit cell are bound to each other through a single -CH center dot center dot center dot N- hydrogen bond, while the molecules at the boundaries between half-unit cells are bound through double -CH center dot center dot center dot N- hydrogen bonds. The STM images and the DFT calculations reveal that the molecules in an enantiomorphous domain adopt the same adsorption orientation of either R-TPTZ or L-TPTZ, which indicates that the adsorbed TPTZ molecules on Au(111) undergo spontaneous chiral resolution. The subtle balance between the intermolecular interaction and the molecule-substrate interaction tunes the period of the superstructure. The total interaction energy densities obtained from the DFT calculations explain the experimental observations quantitatively.

Abstract:Chiral switching is a fascinating topic and plays an important role in construction of homochirality. Nevertheless, due to the complexity and flexibility of noncovalent interactions, switching the chirality of entire supramolecular assemblies has hitherto remained a challenge. Here we report the electric field-controlled chirality switching of pentacene pinwheel arrays and two-dimensional (2D) network domains. Pentacene molecules on Cd(0001) surface form the porous network structure with building blocks of hexamer pinwheels. Driven by the electric field from a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) tip, the supramolecular chirality of pentacene pinwheels and the organizational chirality of entire network domains can be simultaneously switched from one enantiomorph to another. Furthermore, such chiral switching is reversible and repeatable under successive voltage pulses. First-principles calculations demonstrate that electric field significantly modulates the interfacial charge transfer and induces the Coulomb expansion of pentacene layers, and the subsequent reaggregation leads to the chiral flipping of the supramolecular pinwheels and 2D domains. Our results provide a new strategy for dynamic control of the 2D chiral structures and help to steer the supramolecular assembly toward homochirality.

Abstract:Homochiral metal-organic macrocyclic complexes are of great significance owing to their chirality and well-defined internal cavities that potentially have the ability to mimic complicated biological processes. Here we report a novel metal/anion-coordination co-driven strategy for the formation of nanoscale supramolecular metallocycles with unique topology, large size, and desired chirality. The enantiomeric Janus-type metallocyclic strips are assembled based on the synergistic coordination of sulfate anions and CoII ions to a bifunctional achiral ligand combining the o-phenylene-(bis)urea anion-chelating and 8-hydroxyquinoline metal-coordinating sites. The inherent chirality arises from two types of helical chiralities (triply twisted Möbius ring and circular helicate), which is observed for the first time for metal-organic complex systems. Notably, spontaneous chiral resolution by conglomerate crystallization into a pair of enantiomers (P- or M-Co9) is realized, which is attributed to the multiple weak intermolecular interactions facilitating the hierarchically helical superstructure.

Abstract:The association between molecular chirality and helical characteristics known as the chirality-helicity equivalence is determined for the first time by quantifying a chirality-helicity measure consistent with photoexcitation circular dichroism experiments. This is demonstrated using a formally achiral SN 2 reaction and a chiral SN 2 reaction. Both the achiral and chiral SN 2 reactions possess significant values of the chirality-helicity measure and display a Walden inversion, i. e. an inversion of the chirality between the reactant and product. We also track the chirality-helicity measure along the reaction path and discover the presence of chirality at the transition state and two intermediate structures for both reactions. We demonstrate the need for the chirality-helicity measure to differentiate between steric effects due to eclipsed conformations and chiral behaviors in formally achiral species. We explain the significance of this work for asymmetric synthetic reactions including the intermediate structures where the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog (CIP) rules cannot be used.

Abstract:Chirality evolution from molecule levels to the nanoscale in an achiral system is a fundamental issue that remains undiscovered. Here, we report the assembly of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters into chiral subnanostructures in achiral systems by programmable single-molecule interactions. Driven by the competing binding of Ca2+ and surface ligands, POM assemblies would twist into helical nanobelts, nanorings, and nanotubes with tunable helicity. Chiral molecules can be used to differentiate the formation energies of chiral isomers and immobilize the homochiral isomer, where strong circular dichroism (CD) signals are obtained in both solutions and films. Chiral helical nanobelts can be used as circularly polarized light (CPL) photodetectors due to their distinct chiroptic responsivity for right and left CPL. By the fine-tuning of interactions at single-molecule levels, the morphology and CD spectra of helical assemblies can be precisely controlled, providing an atomic precision model for investigation of the structure-chirality relationship and chirality manipulation at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Spontaneous resolutions from an in situ reaction especially for a Sharpless reaction are really rare. Here we display a new pair of enantiomeric compounds Δ- and Λ-[Mn(4-tzba)(bpy)2·H2O](bpy)·3H2O (labeled as Δ-1 and Λ-1 respectively) (4-tzba = 4-tetrazolbenzoic acid; bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) from a Sharpless reaction. They crystallized in the P212121 chiral space group and demonstrated strong second harmonic generation (SHG) responses and red photoluminescence property. The chiral metal conformations were captured by the introduction of the distorted bpy and the in situ synthesized 4-tzba ligands. The hydrogen bonds connecting the 4-tzba and central metal play a crucial role in the chirality transmission, as well as the donor–acceptor type SHG nonlinear response.

Abstract:Circularly polarized light (CPL), regarded as a true chiral entity, has been suggested as one possible origin of homochirality in nature. It still remains difficult to understand the exact mechanism of chiral induction, transfer and amplification in supramolecular assemblies. Herein, we designed and synthesized three discotic diacetylene LC monomers, in which the peripheral diacetylene flexible chains linked to the triazole derivative cores through H-bonding or covalent bonds. We established links between the primary chemical structures of discotic diacetylene monomers, liquid crystal phase structures and optically active properties in the final supramolecular assemblies. Moreover, the type of junction bonding interaction exhibited a significant influence on the chiral transfer in a supramolecular columnar LC system.

Abstract:The racemization of chiral organic compounds is a common chemical phenomenon. However, it often poses configurational-stability issues to the application of this class of compounds. Achieving chiral organic compounds without the risk of racemization is fascinating, but it is challenging due to a lack of strategies. Here, we reveal the cove-regions bridging strategy for achieving persistently chiral multi-helicenes (incapable of racemization), based on the synthesized proof-of-concept double hetero[4]helicenes featuring macrocycle structures with a small 3D cavity. Additionally, we demonstrate that the strategy is also effective in tuning the electronic structures of multi-helicenes, resulting in a conversion from luminescence silence to thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) for the present system. Furthermore, red circularly polarized TADF based on small double[4]helicene systems is achieved for the first time using this strategy. The disclosed cove-regions bridging strategy provides an opportunity to modulate the electronic structures and luminescent properties of multi-helicenes without concern for racemization, thus significantly enhancing the structural and property diversity of multi-helicenes for various applications.

Abstract:Four pairs of chiral 3D coordination polymers (CPs), [Zn2(BDC)(lac)(DMF)]·guest (2) (H2BDC = benzene dicarboxylic acid; H2lac = lactic acid; guest = 1.5DMF + i-PrOH), [Co2(BDC)(lac)(DMF)]·guest (3) (guest = DMF + 2H2O), [Fe4(BDC)3(lac)2(DMF)2](CO3)·guest (4) (guest = DMF + 2H2O), and {Zn11(BPDC)6(lac)6[NH2(CH3)2]2}·guest (H2BPDC = 3,3′-biphenyldicarboxylic acid; guest = 6DMF + 18H2O) (5), are prepared through the reactions of racemic lactic acid (rac-H2lac) with different metal ions and auxiliary ligands.
