Abstract:The use of standard platforms in the field of humanoid robotics can accelerate research, and lower the entry barrier for new research groups. While many affordable humanoid standard platforms exist in the lower size ranges of up to 60cm, beyond this the few available standard platforms quickly become significantly more expensive, and difficult to operate and maintain. In this paper, the igus Humanoid Open Platform is presented---a new, affordable, versatile and easily customisable standard platform for humanoid robots in the child-sized range. At 90cm, the robot is large enough to interact with a human-scale environment in a meaningful way, and is equipped with enough torque and computing power to foster research in many possible directions. The structure of the robot is entirely 3D printed, allowing for a lightweight and appealing design. The electrical and mechanical designs of the robot are presented, and the main features of the corresponding open-source ROS software are discussed. The 3D CAD files for all of the robot parts have been released open-source in conjunction with this paper.

Abstract:An affordable, highly articulated, child-size humanoid robot could potentially be used for various purposes, widening the design space of humanoids for further study. Several findings indicated that normal children and children with autism interact well with humanoids. This paper presents a child-sized humanoid robot (HBS-1) intended primarily for children’s education and rehabilitation. The design approach is based on the design for manufacturing (DFM) and the design for assembly (DFA) philosophies to realize the robot fully using additive manufacturing. Most parts of the robot are fabricated with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) using rapid prototyping technology. Servomotors and shape memory alloy actuators are used as actuating mechanisms. The mechanical design, analysis and characterization of the robot are presented in both theoretical and experimental frameworks.

Abstract:For several years, high development and production costs of humanoid robots restricted researchers interested in working in the field. To overcome this problem, several research groups have opted to work with simulated or smaller robots, whose acquisition costs are significantly lower. However, due to scale differences and imperfect simulation replicability, results may not be directly reproducible on real, adult-sized robots. In this paper, we present the NimbRo-OP2X, a capable and affordable adult-sized humanoid platform aiming to significantly lower the entry barrier for humanoid robot research. With a height of 135cm and weight of only 19kg, the robot can interact in an unmodified, human environment without special safety equipment. Modularity in hardware and software allows this platform enough flexibility to operate in different scenarios and applications with minimal effort. The robot is equipped with an on-board computer with GPU, which enables the implementation of state-of-the-art approaches for object detection and human perception demanded by areas such as manipulation and human–robot interaction. Finally, the capabilities of the NimbRo-OP2X, especially in terms of locomotion stability and visual perception, are evaluated. This includes the performance at RoboCup 2018, where NimbRo-OP2X won all possible awards in the AdultSize class.

Abstract:Humanoid robotics research depends on capable robot platforms, but recently developed advanced platforms are often not available to other research groups, expensive, dangerous to operate, or closed-source. The lack of available platforms forces researchers to work with smaller robots, which have less strict dynamic constraints or with simulations, which lack many real-world effects. We developed NimbRo-OP2X to address this need. At a height of 135 cm our robot is large enough to interact in a human environment. Its low weight of only 19 kg makes the operation of the robot safe and easy, as no special operational equipment is necessary. Our robot is equipped with a fast onboard computer and a GPU to accelerate parallel computations. We extend our already open-source software by a deep-learning based vision system and gait parameter optimisation. The NimbRo-OP2X was evaluated during RoboCup 2018 in Montréal, Canada, where it won all possible awards in the Humanoid AdultSize class.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and development of a humanoid dual-arm robot called DARO, along with its improved version, DARO-N. DARO and DARO-N consist of two arms and humanoid hands, each with 6/7 degrees of freedom for the arms and 7 active degrees of freedom for the hands. Modular commercial actuators are employed as the driving joints of the arms, allowing for reduced development time and cost. The design principles of modularity, simplicity, lightweight construction, human likeness, information perception capability, and scalability are incorporated into the design. Furthermore, this work establishes a control framework for the humanoid dual-arm robot and conducts simulations and multiple physical experiments to validate the performance of the robots.

Abstract:The physically realizable transformation between multiple 3D objects has attracted considerable attention recently since it has numerous potential applications in a variety of industries. In this paper, we presented EasySRRobot, a low-cost, easy-to-build self-reconfigurable modular robot, to realize the automatic transformation across different configurations, and overcomes the limitation of existing transformation methods requiring manual involvement. All on-board components in EasySRRobot are off-the-shelf and all support structures and shells are 3D printed, so that any novice users can make it at home. In addition, an algorithm to automatically find an optimal design for the interior structure was proposed, and the result has been demonstrated by comparing with another two feasible designs. Thirty modules were fabricated with the aid of 3D printing and the motions of two configurations (snake and wheel) were realized, which shows the working ability and effectiveness of the proposed EasySRRobot. We further explored the effect of EasySRRobot on spatial ability, a skill that is crucial for STEM education. The results indicated that interacting with EasySRRobot can effectively improve the performance of the transformation task, suggesting that it might improve mental rotation skills and other aspects of spatial ability.

Abstract:The versatility of humanoid robots in locomotion, full-body motion, interaction with unmodified human environments, and intuitive human-robot interaction led to increased research interest. Multiple smaller platforms are available for research, but these require a miniaturized environment to interact with---and often the small scale of the robot diminishes the influence of factors which would have affected larger robots. Unfortunately, many research platforms in the larger size range are less affordable, more difficult to operate, maintain and modify, and very often closed-source. In this work, we introduce NimbRo-OP2X, an affordable, fully open-source platform in terms of both hardware and software. Being almost 135cm tall and only 18kg in weight, the robot is not only capable of interacting in an environment meant for humans, but also easy and safe to operate and does not require a gantry when doing so. The exoskeleton of the robot is 3D printed, which produces a lightweight and visually appealing design. We present all mechanical and electrical aspects of the robot, as well as some of the software features of our well-established open-source ROS software. The NimbRo-OP2X performed at RoboCup 2017 in Nagoya, Japan, where it won the Humanoid League AdultSize Soccer competition and Technical Challenge.

Abstract:To solve technical problems in miniaturization and integration of humanoid robot,and apply humanoid robot in unstructured human life environment,a new kid-size humanoid robot THBIP-Ⅱ is developed,and its system configuration is introduced,including mechanical structure,control system and sensing system.THBIP-Ⅱ has a height of 700 mm,a weight of 18 kg and 24 degrees of freedom.To fulfill its miniaturization,modularized joints and transmission structures with synchronous belt and harmonic reducer are adopted,and a typical distributed control is adopted in its control system.Meanwhile,a 3D simulation platform is established,and a flat locomotion of 15 cm/step,0.075 m/s and a stable penalty kick are achieved successfully based on 3D parametric gait planning of torque optimization.

Abstract:Self-reconfigurable modular robots (SRRobot) that can change their shape and function in different environments according to different tasks have caught a lot of attention recently. Most existing prototypes use professional electronic components with relatively expensive cost and high barrier of fabrication. In this paper, we present a low-cost SRRobot with double-cube modules. Our system is easy-to-build even for novices as all electric components are off-the-shelf and the structural components in plastics are made by 3D printing. To have a better design of interior structures, we first construct a design space for all feasible solutions that satisfy the constraints of fabrication. Then, an optimized solution is found by an objective function incorporating the factors of space utilization, structural sound-ness and assembly complexity. Thirty EasySRRobot modules are manufactured and assembled. The functionality of our algorithm is demonstrated by comparing an optimized interior design with other two feasible designs and realizing different motions on an EasySRRobot with four modules.

Abstract:The rapidly improving mechanical systems and control algorithms of humanoid robots brings them ever-closer to integration with humans in-situ. As this trend begins a process of research robots to general products, the dissemination of design decisions and application-specific compromises becomes as equally important as the underlying technology itself. Like-wise, the newly discovered applications and societal integration raise new questions for research, including how a humanoid robot should look - and what technological innovations are needed to support such look. While the uncanny valley is often the forefront of humanoid robot design discussions, we present a new full-size humanoid robot named TOCABI, that side-steps the valley and brings forth the question of academic challenges needed to support a new paradigm of industrial design for humanoid robots.

Abstract:In recent years, there is an increasing interest in high school robotics extracurriculars such as robotics clubs and robotics competitions. The growing demand is a result of more ubiquitous open-source software and affordable off-the-shelf hardware kits, which significantly help lower the barrier for entry-level robotics hobbyists. In this project, we present an open-source, low-cost, and lightweight robotic manipulator designed and developed by a high school researcher under the guidance of a university faculty and a Ph.D. student. We believe the presented project is suitable for high school robotics research and educational activities. Our open-source package consists of mechanical design models, mechatronics specifications, and software program source codes. The mechanical design models include CAD (Computer Aided Design) files that are ready for prototyping (3D printing technology) and serve as an assembly guide accommodated with a complete bill of materials. Electrical wiring diagrams and low-level controllers are documented in detail as part of the open-source software package. The educational objective of this project is to enable high school student teams to replicate and build a robotic manipulator. The engineering experience that high school students acquire in the proposed project is full-stack, including mechanical design, mechatronics, and programming. The project significantly enriches their hands-on engineering experience in a project-based environment. Throughout this project, we discovered that the high school researcher was able to apply multidisciplinary knowledge from K-12 STEM courses to build the robotic manipulator. The researcher was able to go through a system engineering design and development process and obtain skills to use professional engineering tools including SolidWorks and Arduino microcontrollers.

Abstract:In this work, the novel, open-source humanoid robot, PANDORA, is presented where a majority of the structural elements are manufactured using 3D-printed compliant materials. As opposed to contemporary approaches that incorporate the elastic element into the actuator mechanisms, PANDORA is designed to be compliant under load, or in other words, structurally elastic. This design approach lowers manufacturing cost and time, design complexity, and assembly time while introducing controls challenges in state estimation, joint and whole-body control. This work features an in-depth description on the mechanical and electrical subsystems including details regarding additive manufacturing benefits and drawbacks, usage and placement of sensors, and networking between devices. In addition, the design of structural elastic components and their effects on overall performance from an estimation and control perspective are discussed. Finally, results are presented which demonstrate the robot completing a robust balancing objective in the presence of disturbances and stepping behaviors.

Abstract:This paper describes the hardware, software framework, and experimental testing of SURENA IV humanoid robotics platform. SURENA IV has 43 degrees of freedom (DoFs), including seven DoFs for each arm, six DoFs for each hand, and six DoFs for each leg, with a height of 170 cm and a mass of 68 kg and morphological and mass properties similar to an average adult human. SURENA IV aims to realize a cost-effective and anthropomorphic humanoid robot for real-world scenarios. In this way, we demonstrate a locomotion framework based on a novel and inexpensive predictive foot sensor that enables walking with 7cm foot position error because of accumulative error of links and connections' deflection(that has been manufactured by the tools which are available in the Universities). Thanks to this sensor, the robot can walk on unknown obstacles without any force feedback, by online adaptation of foot height and orientation. Moreover, the arm and hand of the robot have been designed to grasp the objects with different stiffness and geometries that enable the robot to do drilling, visual servoing of a moving object, and writing his name on the white-board.

Abstract:Service robots are rapidly transitioning from concept to reality, making significant strides in development. Similarly, the field of prosthetics is evolving at an impressive pace, with both areas now being highly relevant in the industry. Advancements in these fields are continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible, leading to the increasing creation of individual arm and hand prosthetics, either as standalone units or combined packages. This trend is driven by the rise of advanced collaborative robots that seamlessly integrate with human counterparts in real-world applications. This paper presents an open-source, 3D-printed robotic arm that has been assembled and programmed using two distinct approaches. The first approach involves controlling the hand via teleoperation, utilizing a camera and machine learning-based hand pose estimation. This method details the programming techniques and processes required to capture data from the camera and convert it into hardware signals. The second approach employs kinematic control using the Denavit-Hartenbergmethod to define motion and determine the position of the end effector in 3D space. Additionally, this work discusses the assembly and modifications made to the arm and hand to create a cost-effective and practical solution. Typically, implementing teleoperation requires numerous sensors and cameras to ensure smooth and successful operation. This paper explores methods enabled by artificial intelligence (AI) that reduce the need for extensive sensor arrays and equipment. It investigates how AI-generated data can be translated into tangible hardware applications across various fields. The advancements in computer vision, combined with AI capable of accurately predicting poses, have the potential to revolutionize the way we control and interact with the world around us.

Anthropomorphic Robotic Hand Prosthesis Developed for Children

Abstract:The use of both hands is a common practice in everyday life. The capacity to interact with the environment is largely dependent on the ability to use both hands. A thorough review of the current state of the art reveals that commercially available prosthetic hands designed for children are very different in functionality from those developed for adults, primarily due to prosthetic hands for adults featuring a greater number of actuated joints. Many times, patients stop using their prosthetic device because they feel that it does not fit well in terms of shape and size. With the idea of solving these problems, the design of HandBot-Kid has been developed with the anthropomorphic qualities of a child between the ages of eight and twelve in mind. Fitting the features of this age range, the robotic hand has a length of 16 cm, width of 7 cm, thickness of 3.6 cm, and weight of 328 g. The prosthesis is equipped with a total of fifteen degrees of freedom (DOF), with three DOFs allocated to each finger. The concept of design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) has been integrated into the development process, enabling the number of parts to be optimized in order to reduce the production time and cost. The utilization of 3D printing technology in conjunction with aluminum machining enabled the manufacturing process of the robotic hand prototype to be streamlined. The flexion-extension movement of each finger exhibits a trajectory that is highly similar to that of a real human finger. The four-bar mechanism integrated into the finger design achieves a mechanical advantage (MA) of 40.33% and a fingertip pressure force of 10.23 N. Finally, HandBot-Kid was subjected to a series of studies and taxonomical tests, including Cutkosky (16 points) and Kapandji (4 points) score tests, and the functional results were compared with some commercial solutions for children mentioned in the state of the art.

Abstract:The development of a versatile, fully-capable humanoid robot as envisioned in science fiction books is one of the most challenging but interesting issues in the robotic field. Currently, existing humanoid robots are designed with different purposes and applications in mind. In humanoid robot development process, each robot is designed with various characteristics, abilities, and equipment, which influence the general structure, cost, and difficulty of development. Even though humanoid robot development is very popular, a few review papers are focusing on the design and development process of humanoid robots. Motivated by this, we present this review paper to show variations in the requirements, design, and development process and also propose a taxonomy of existing humanoid robots. It aims at demonstrating a general perspective of existing humanoid robots' characteristics and applications. This paper includes state-of-the-art and successfully reported existing humanoid robot designs along with different robots used in various robot competitions.

Abstract:Abstract In the late 1990s using robotic technology to assist children with Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASD) emerged as a potentially useful area of research. Since then the field of assistive robotics for children with ASD has grown considerably with many academics trialling different robots and approaches. One such robot is the humanoid robot Kaspar that was originally developed in 2005 and has continually been built upon since, taking advantage of technological developments along the way. A key principle in the development of Kaspar since its creation has been to ensure that all of the advances to the platform are driven by the requirements of the users. In this paper we discuss the development of Kaspar’s design and explain the rationale behind each change to the platform. Designing and building a humanoid robot to interact with and help children with ASD is a multidisciplinary challenge that requires knowledge of the mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), Child–Robot Interaction (CRI) and knowledge of ASD. The Kaspar robot has benefited from the wealth of knowledge accrued over years of experience in robot-assisted therapy for children with ASD. By showing the journey of how the Kaspar robot has developed we aim to assist others in the field develop such technologies further.

Abstract:Nowadays, additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping and assembly modules represent a market that has invaded the entire world, especially in developing countries where traditional manufacturing is more restricted. In robotics, it is pertinent to think that modular construction is essential, due to the complexity of geometry in each of the pieces and their manufacture. Taking into account the globalization of information and the worldwide reproduction of databases, facilitating access to CAD files to be reproduced in 3D printing promotes the easy construction of archived mechanical designs. A robotic architecture becomes a complex assembly by having multiple operating systems. The sensorics, mechanics, electronics and programming that it requires for navigation, collaboration, development, operation and even industrial manufacturing means that more and more elaborate embedded systems are used. In this work, a mobile robotics architecture was developed with a sensory system that allows free movement and navigation in closed loop inverse kinematics. This kind of robot uses navigation algorithms to take a trajectory in collaborative closed environments, that is, closed industrial environments where obstacles are normally immovable and corridors to move narrow, in addition to having mobile obstacles like humans.
