Abstract:Aero-optical effects reduce the accuracy of optical sensors on high-speed aircraft. Current research usually focuses on light refraction caused by large-scale density structures in turbulence. A method for analyzing photon energy scattering caused by micro-scale structures is proposed in this paper, which can explain the macro image distortion caused by moving molecules in inhomogeneous airflow. Quantitative analysis of the propagation equation indicates that micro-scale structures may contribute more to the wavefront distortion than the widely considered large-scale structures. To analyze the micro mechanism of aero-optical effects, a transient simulator is designed based on the scaling model of transient distorted wavefronts and the artificial vortex structure. The simulation results demonstrate that correct aero-optical phenomena can be obtained from the micro mechanism of photon energy scattering. Examples of using the transient simulator to optimize the parameters of the star sensor on a hypersonic vehicle are provided. The proposed analysis method for micro-scale structures provides a new idea for studying the aero-optical effects.

Abstract:The increase in aircraft flight speed has increased the opportunities for high-speed optical aperture applications. However, due to the influence of aero-optical effects, the light beam can appear offset, jittering, blurring, and suffer energy attenuation, all of which affect the optical quality. In the current paper, we summarized the key research progress on the fluid dynamics and aero-optical effects of high-speed optical apertures. The influence of the flight state and optical parameters on the aero-optical effects was analyzed and described. Moreover, we evaluated potential aero-optical suppression solutions, such as flow control and adaptive optics. This work provides useful guidance and aid to scholars engaged in research on the high-speed aero-optical effects.

Effect of structural recession on the performance of a satellite laser retroreflector

Abstract:Satellite laser retroreflector (LRR) array is an essential reflecting element for satellite laser ranging. Because of the requirements of manufacturing and assembling, the actual LRR reflecting face is placed underneath the top of assembly. We use the ray tracing method to build up the active retroreflecting region model for LRR with a structural recession effect. Combined with the principle of far-field diffraction intensity and velocity aberration, we give the mathematical model for expressing the structural recession effect on the received optical signal intensity (ROSI) by a ground station. As an important factor for determining the performance of LRR, the distribution of ROSI is simulated for an HY-2A LRR array. The simulation shows that the value of ROSI decreases along with the increment of structural recession size. The bigger optical incident angle should bring about further reduction of ROSI. Only considering the structural recession effect on ROSI, we obtain the regularity of difference of range correction. Before and after considering the structural recession effect, the maximum difference of range correction reaches 9.36 mm for the whole incidence condition. Analysis of the Effects of Thermal Environment on Optical Systems for Navigation Guidance and Control in Supersonic Aircraft Based on Empirical Equations.

Abstract:The thermal environment is an important factor in the design of optical systems. This study investigated the thermal analysis technology of optical systems for navigation guidance and control in supersonic aircraft by developing empirical equations for the front temperature gradient and rear thermal diffusion distance, and for basic factors such as flying parameters and the structure of the optical system. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to study the relationship between flying and front dome parameters and the system temperature field. Systematic deduction was then conducted based on the effects of the temperature field on the physical geometry and ray tracing performance of the front dome and rear optical lenses, by deriving the relational expressions between the system temperature field and the spot size and positioning precision of the rear optical lens. The optical systems used for navigation guidance and control in supersonic aircraft when the flight speed is in the range of 1-5 Ma were analysed using the derived equations. Using this new method it was possible to control the precision within 10% when considering the light spot received by the four-quadrant detector, and computation time was reduced compared with the traditional method of separately analysing the temperature field of the front dome and rear optical lens using FEA. Thus, the method can effectively increase the efficiency of parameter analysis and computation in an airborne optical system, facilitating the systematic, effective and integrated thermal analysis of airborne optical systems for navigation guidance and control.

Abstract:Aero-optical effects caused by high-speed flow fields will interfere with the transmission of starlight, reduce the accuracy of optical sensors, and affect the application of celestial navigation on hypersonic vehicles. At present, the research of aero-optical effects relies heavily on the flow field simulation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), which requires a great deal of computing resources and time, and cannot satisfy the demand of the rapid analysis of aero-optical effects in the engineering design stage. Therefore, a quick simulation method for aero-optical effects based on a density proxy model (DP-AOQS) is proposed in this paper. A proxy model of the turbulent density field is designed to replace the density field in the CFD simulation, and the proxy model is parametrically calibrated to simulate the optical characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer (TBL) in the external flow field of the optical window. The performance of DP-AOQS in the visible light band is verified from the perspectives of density field distribution, optical path difference (OPD), and fuzzy star map. The simulation results show that the method can quickly provide the distortion results of aero-optical effects in different flight conditions on the premise of ensuring the simulation accuracy. The research in this paper provides a new analytical method for the study of aero-optical effects.

Abstract:Aero-optical effects have received increasing attention in recent decades with the continuous development of high-speed missiles' imaging guidance systems, airborne laser systems, and laser communication systems. Numerous experiments and engineering practices have shown that the aero-optical effects of the supersonic turbulent shear layer can reveal the essential characteristics of general aero-optical effects. Practical engineering problems related to aero-optical effects are often the result of the superposition of the aero-optical effects of multiple shear layers. This paper mainly studies the shear layers represented by the supersonic turbulent boundary layers, mixing layers, and wall jets. The latest research progress on aero-optical effects is summarized to provide a reference for suppressing aero-optical distortion through flow control and adaptive optical correction.

Abstract:Angular glint is an important factor affecting radar measurement accuracy, which comes from the interaction of multiple scattering centers of the extended target and cannot be eliminated. In the near-field region, angular glint exerts a more significant impact on radar tracking accuracy, and may even cause radar pointing to fall beyond the actual target extent. There are two methods for calculating angular glint, the Poynting vector method (PVM) and the phase gradient method (PGM), of which PVM is commonly used for theoretical calculations and PGM is often used for practical measurements. In this paper, the angular glint is calculated by PVM using the scattered field of the target. Therefore, optimizing the computational efficiency of the near-field scattered field is of utmost significance. While Geometrical Optics (GO) and Physical Optics (PO) are commonly used methods for high-frequency electromagnetic scattering calculations, GO can only calculate the scattered field in the specular direction, and PO is not applicable to scenarios involving multiple reflections. Therefore, this paper proposes a physical optics method based on beam tracing, which can not only calculate the scattered field in any direction but also solve the problem of multiple reflections. Furthermore, the PO method requires the initial subdivision of the target into small facets. The size of these facets is dependent on the frequency, and the number of facets for the target substantially increases as the frequency rises, thereby affecting computational efficiency. In the proposed method in this paper, the target can be composed of large-size facets, allowing for the rapid computation of the near-field scattering field, and higher computational efficiency can be obtained by introducing space acceleration structure and parallel computing techniques.

Abstract:Aero-optical effect correction has become a crucial issue in airborne infrared imaging. However, it is impractical to test the correction algorithm using flight tests and numerical simulation because of its high cost. This study proposes a dynamic imaging simulation method for the infrared aero-optical effect based on a continuously varying Gaussian superposition model. The influence of infrared image degradation under different high-speed aerodynamic flow fields was investigated in detail. A continuously varying Gaussian superposition model was established for flight speed, altitude, and attitude. A dynamic infrared scene simulation model was constructed. Experimental results show that the proposed method can realistically simulate actual aero-optical effects of any flight case. Moreover, it can simulate continuous frames of aerodynamically degraded infrared images. The method uses a simpler model than numerical simulation and provides more data for multitype tasks.
Analysis of Flow Field Aero-Optical Effects on the Imaging by Near-Earth Space All-Time Short-Wave Infrared Star Sensors

Abstract:In order to study the performance of the all-time short-wave infrared (SWIR) star sensor mounted on a high-speed platform in near-earth space, a model of aero-optical effects is established to quantitatively analyze the influence of the flow field on its imaging. Firstly, the LES model is chosen to calculate the external flow field characteristics. Then, the degradation results of the transmission effect are analyzed based on the refractive index field, and the imaging degradation model of the star sensor under aero-thermal conditions is constructed. The optical transmission effect simulation shows that the star point offset increases with the rise of flight speed. Compared with the visible band, when the velocity reaches 8Ma, the star point offset in the J, H, and Ks bands declines by 46.6%, 62.1%, and 71.1%, respectively. The research on the thermal radiation effect presents that the stargazing ability of star sensors is barely affected with a speed of no more than 4Ma. As the speed increases to 8Ma, the detectable limiting magnitudes of the J, H, and Ks bands are 3.943, 2.674, and 1.313. H band and the middle region are suggested to maximize the performance of SWIR star sensors. The research quantitatively analyzes the influence of flow field aero-optical effects on the image quality, which provides theoretical support for the system design, parameter selection, and installation position of SWIR star sensors applied in near-earth space.

Experimental investigation on aero-optical effects of a hypersonic optical dome under different exposure times

Abstract:The aero-optical effects induced by the complex flow structure around a hypersonic optical dome is highly unsteady, which leads to significant differences in the imaging quality under different exposure times. It is of great significance to study the influence of exposure time on imaging quality for guiding the design of imaging guidance seekers and improving imaging guidance accuracy. Based on the hypersonic gun wind tunnel, an aero-optical effect measurement platform was built to measure the wavefront from transient exposure to long exposure. With the increase of exposure time, the accuracy of high-order optical path difference (OPD) reconstruction by low-order Zernike polynomials increased from 62.2% to 88.6%. The increase of exposure time was helpful to reduce the complexity of the wavefront spatial distribution structure. In principle, it could reduce the difficulty of wavefront adaptive correction systems. With the increase of exposure time, the ${{\rm OPD}_{\rm rms}}$OPDrms corresponding to ${{\rm OPD}_{\rm high-order}}$OPDhigh-order increased gradually, the amplitude decreased gradually, and the difference of ${{\rm OPD}_{\rm rms}}$OPDrms decreased gradually at different times. Under different exposure times, the large-aperture approximation principle could achieve a better prediction of Strehl ratio values. With the increase of exposure time, the imaging integral resolution, $R$R, decreased obviously, and it was stable at about ${1.43}{R_0}$1.43R0. Compared with that, $R$R was improved by about 30% when the exposure time was 6 ns.

Abstract:The strong coupling interactions of non-equilibrium flow, microscopic particle collisions and radiative transitions within the shock layer of hypersonic atmospheric re-entry vehicles makes accurate prediction of the aerothermodynamics challenging. Therefore, in this study a self-consistent non-equilibrium flow, collisional–radiative reactions and radiative transfer fully coupled model are established to study the non-equilibrium characteristics of the flow field and radiation of vehicle atmospheric re-entry. The comparison of the present calculation results with flight data of FIRE II and previous results in the literature shows a reasonable agreement. The thermal, chemical and excited energy level non-equilibrium phenomena are obtained and analysed for the different FIRE II trajectory points, which form the critical basis for studying the heat transfer and radiation. The non-equilibrium distribution of excited energy levels significantly exists in the post-shock and near-wall regions due to the rapid vibrational dissociation and electronic under-excitation, as well as the wall catalytic reactions. The analysis of stagnation-point heating of FIRE II illustrates that the translational–rotational convection and the dissociation component diffusion play key roles in the aerodynamic heating of the wall region. The spectrally resolved radiative intensity in the entire flow field indicates that the vacuum ultraviolet radiation caused by the high-energy nitrogen atomic spectral lines makes the main contribution to the radiative transfer. Finally, it is found that the non-equilibrium flow–radiation coupling effect can exacerbate the excited energy level non-equilibrium, and further affect the gas radiative properties and radiative transfer. This fully coupled study provides an effective method for reasonable prediction of atmospheric re-entry flow and radiation fields.

Abstract:Wall-modeled large-eddy simulations of turbulent boundary-layer flows over a flat plate at Mach 3.5, 7.87, and 13.64 were carried out, and the aero-optical distortions resulting from density fluctuations were investigated. The conditions for the Mach 3.5 case match those of a direct numerical simulation in the literature. The Mach 7.87 conditions are representative of the Hypersonic Wind Tunnel at Sandia National Laboratories, and the Mach 13.64 conditions match those of the Arnold Engineering Development Complex Hypervelocity Tunnel 9. The wall-modeled large-eddy simulations were validated using available experimental and DNS reference data. The normalized root-mean-square optical path difference for all three cases is in good agreement with respective data obtained from reference direct numerical simulations and experiments (within 1.53% for [Formula: see text], 1.25% for [Formula: see text], and 12% for [Formula: see text], compared to numerical data). Above [Formula: see text], the normalized path difference obtained from the simulations is above the value predicted by a semi-analytical relationship by Notre Dame University. With increasing Mach number, the bulk contribution to the total optical distortion shifts toward the boundary-layer edge. In addition, a proper orthogonal decomposition reveals that the nature of the dominant density fluctuations, which are located near the boundary-layer edge, changes from three-dimensional to two-dimensional. Understanding how the coherent structures contribute to the optical path difference may pave a way toward devising active flow control strategies geared toward a reduction of the optical path difference.

Abstract:The effective acquisition of a distorted wavefront is the foundation of studying how to suppress and correct aero-optical effects. The background-oriented schlieren (BOS) technique, as a commonly quantitative measurement method of flow field, has great application potential in aero-optical effect measurement. With consideration of the thickness change of the refractive index field, introduction of near-field correction and construction of the double telecentric configuration, wavefront measurement accuracy was improved. A standard plano-convex lens was utilized to quantitatively evaluate the improved results, and the effectiveness of the improvement was verified. Determination methods of spatial resolution, sensitivity, and dynamic measurement range of wavefront measurement based on BOS were studied. The influences of cross-correlation interrogation window size and step length on the wavefront reconstruction accuracy were investigated. The step length should be less than the size of the interrogation window to make the reconstructed results have a satisfactory accuracy. Wavefront results of supersonic film at different positions and cases were obtained. The fitting results show that there is a good linear relationship between the root mean square of the optical path difference (OPDrms) and ρ1/ρ∞ at different locations. Under different experimental cases, the aero-optical distortion tends to become stronger first and then weaker along the flow direction, and the aero-optical distortion around Position 3 is relatively strong. The large aperture approximation can be used to predict Strehl ratio values effectively in a considerable range by OPDrms.
Aero-optical Aberration Measuring Method Based on NPLS and Its Application

Abstract:The existing methods for measuring aero-optical aberration suffer from several problems, such as low spatiotemporal resolution, sensitivity to environment, and integral effects. A new method for measuring aero-optical aberration of supersonic flow is proposed. Based on the self-developed measuring method of supersonic density field, the wavefront aberration induced by a cross-section of supersonic flow field could be measured by ray-tracing. Compared with other methods, the present one has three significant innovations: (1) high spatiotemporal resolution. Its time resolution is 6 ns, and the spatial resolution can reach up to micrometers; (2) it can avoid the integral effects and study the wavefront aberration induced by the flow field of interest locally; (3) it can also avoid the influence from the test section wall boundary layers and environmental disturbances. The present method was applied to supersonic flow around an optical bow cap. The results of high spatiotemporal resolution reveal fine wavefront structures, and show that shock waves, expansion waves and turbulent boundary layers have different impacts on the wavefront aberration.
The Effect of Polarization Light on Optical Imaging System

Abstract:Normally, Strehl ratio, resolution, and focus depth, the parameters that are used to evaluate the performance of an optical imaging system, are always calculated by scalar diffraction method. Considering the vectorial properties of light, especially when the system numerical aperture (NA) is high, the accuracy of scalar method can no longer fulfill the requirement of analysis. The variations of properties of these parameters accompanied by using of vectorial method are discussed. In order to describe the effects of polarization clearly, assuming a system with identical polarization state within the entrance pupil, by formula deduction and numerical simulation, we conclude that due to the influence of the polarization, the maximum intensity of system diffraction spot decreases, the resolution between image plane and parallel polarized orientation of incident light drops down, then the diffraction spot loses its circular symmetry, the focus depth changes slightly, and these effects becomes more apparent with the increase of system NA. Finally, the method of calculating the off-axis images is discussed in the paper.

Abstract:The starlight refraction indirect horizon-sensing positioning method is a new type of autonomous celestial navigation method with broad application prospects. In view of this method currently being limited to the spacecraft outside the atmosphere, this article derives and establishes a starlight refraction indirect horizon-sensing positioning model between the starlight refraction angle and the flight vehicle's position inside the atmosphere. Based on this model, a new starlight refraction indirect horizon-sensing positioning method for the flight vehicle inside the atmosphere is proposed. According to the atmospheric refraction law and the spherical atmospheric model, the refracted optical path of starlight entering the atmosphere and reaching the flight vehicle is traced, so as to establish a starlight refraction positioning model that reflects the relationship between the refraction angle and the 3-D position of the flight vehicle inside the atmosphere. Subsequently, by employing star sensors on the flight vehicle to measure the starlight refraction angle, and combining the starlight refraction positioning model that maps the starlight refraction angle and the flight vehicle's position, a starlight refraction indirect horizon-sensing autonomous celestial positioning method, tailored for the flight within the atmosphere, is proposed.
