Abstract:In recent years, significant advancements have been made in the synthesis and application of 1,3-dienes. This specific structural motif has garnered significant attention from researchers in materials science and biology due to its unique aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties and extensive conjugation systems. The luminescent characteristics of these compounds are notably influenced by the geometry of the two double bonds. Therefore, it is essential to consolidate stereoselective synthetic strategies for 1,3-dienes. This comprehensive review seeks to elucidate the diverse techniques employed to attain stereo-control in the synthesis of 1,3-diene-based AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Particular emphasis is placed on comprehending the determinants of stereoselectivity and exploring the array of substrates amenable to these methods. Furthermore, the review underscores the AIE properties exhibited by these compounds and their extensive utility in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), stimuli-responsive materials, sensors, bioimaging, and photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Abstract:Two functionalized pillar[5]arenes (H1 and H2) with significant AIE properties were synthesized. H2 is an excellent probe to selectively detect specific alkanediamines owing to its multiple binding sites, which result in the enhancement of emission based on the AIE mechanism and the induced-fit mechanism, and provides a new strategy to develop probes with high selectivity and sensitivity.

Abstract:Luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) characteristics have been well developed and applied in various areas such as bio-imaging, theranostics, organic photoelectronics and chemo/bio sensors. However, most of the reported AIEgens suffer from the disadvantages of complex organic synthesis and high cost, as well as being environmentally unfriendly and hard to degrade, which have largely limited their real applications. In this work, we discovered berberine chloride, a natural isoquinoline alkaloid isolated from Chinese herbal plants, as an unconventional rotor-free AIEgen with bright solid-state emission and water-soluble characteristics. Single crystal structure analysis and optical property, viscosity, and host-guest interaction studies suggested that intramolecular vibration and twisted intramolecular charge transfer were responsible for the AIE phenomenon of berberine chloride. Moreover, berberine chloride was biocompatible and could specifically target lipid droplets in a fluorescence turn-on and wash-free manner, demonstrating the great potential of natural products as promising AIE probes.

Abstract:<p>The unique advantages and the exciting application prospects of AIEgens have triggered booming developments in this area in recent years. Among them, stimuli-responsive AIEgens have received particular attention and impressive progress, and they have been demonstrated to show tremendous potential in many fields from physical chemistry to materials science and to biology and medicine. Here, the recent achievements of stimuli-responsive AIEgens in terms of seven most representative types of stimuli including force, light, polarity, temperature, electricity, ion, and pH, are summarized. Based on typical examples, it is illustrated how each type of systems realize the desired stimuli-responsive performance for various applications. The key work principles behind them are ultimately deciphered and figured out to offer new insights and guidelines for the design and engineering of the next-generation stimuli-responsive luminescent materials for more broad applications.</p>

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) possess enhanced fluorescence in highly aggregated states, thus enabling AIEgens as a promising module for highly emissive fluorescence biomaterials. So far, AIEgens-based nanomaterials and their hybrids have been reported for biomedical applications. Benefiting from the intrinsic biocompatibility and biofunction-editing properties of peptides, peptide-AIEgens hybrid biomaterials reveal unlimited possibilities including target capacity, specificity, stimuli-responsiveness, self-assembly, controllable structural transformation, etc.. In the last two decades, peptide-AIEgens hybrid nanomaterials with a unique design concept in aggregated states have achieved various biomedical applications such as biosensing, bioimaging, imaging-guided surgery, drug delivery and therapy. More recently, programmable design of peptide-AIEgens for in situ self-assembly provides a unique strategy for constructing intelligent entities with defined biological functions. In this review, we summarize the basic design principle of programmable peptide-AIEgens, structure-effect relationship and their unusual biomedical effects. Finally, an outlook and perspective toward future challenges and developments of peptide-AIEgens nanomaterials are concluded.

Abstract:Research on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has been a hot topic. Due to enthusiastic efforts by many researchers, hundreds of AIE luminogens (AIEgens) have been generated which were mainly based on archetypal silole, tetraphenylethene, distyrylanthracene, triphenylethene, and tetraphenyl-1,4-butadiene, etc. To enlarge the family of AIEgens and to enrich their functions, new AIEgens are in high demand. In this work, we report a new kind of AIEgen based on tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP), which could be readily prepared under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, we show that the TPP derivatives possess a good thermal stability and their emission could be fine-tuned by varying the substituents on their phenyl rings. It is anticipated that TPP derivatives could serve as a new type of widely utilized AIEgen, based on their facile preparation, good thermo-, photo-and chemostabilities, and efficient emission.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) refers to a unique photophysical phenomenon observed for some specific fluorophores, which are faintly or non-emissive in solution but become highly emissive in solid and aggregated states. In the cases of fluorescent probes, AIE active molecules possess some unparallel advantages over their classical counterparts. On one hand, it allows more AIE active molecules to bind to the target analyte, without worrying about the aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching; thus favors fluorescence detection. On the other hand, the feature of drastic enhancement in fluorescence intensity associating with an aggregation event can be used as a method of quantitative detection. In this paper, a series of representative AIE molecules are demonstrated; their applications as biological probes in sensing of protein, DNA, G4, and chiral amines are highlighted; their working principles and features of these molecules are described. Finally, a brief outlook on the design of new AIE-active molecules and the application of AIE-molecules in relevant fields is forwarded.

Abstract:<p>Research on aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) has caused tremendous research enthusiasms among scientists worldwide because they can realize strong solid-state luminescence to meet real-world applications. It is crucial to develop AIEgens with different structures to access different functionalities. Recently, a series of pyrazine-based prototype AIEgens are developed which include the distinctive features of convenient synthesis and post-modification, good stability, tunable molecular excited-state motion, electronic structure and geometry, and rich N functional binding sites. They exhibit the university to design photoelectronic, sensing, imaging, therapy, self-assembling, porous, chiral and polymer materials, etc. This review will summarize the uniqueness of this kind of AIEgens and their advance in mechanism study, molecular design and application development. With this review, more attentions will be inclined to study pyrazine-based AIEgens and more sparks will be motivated to develop new luminescent functional materials.</p>

Abstract:Pillar[ n ]arenes primarily comprise pillar[5]arenes and pillar[6]arenes, which belong to the new class of supramolecular macrocyclic hosts. Pillar[ n ]arenes have aroused wide attention because of their highly rigid and symmetrical architectures, controllable cavity size, and wide applications in a wide variety of areas. Although pillar[6]arene is difficult to synthesize, numerous studies have been conducted on it. In this review, the strategies to synthesize and functionalize pillar[6]arenes are investigated systematically. In addition, their host-guest properties in organic solvents and in aqueous solution are described. Moreover, pillar[6]arenes applied in different fields ( e.g. , molecular recognition, drug release, cancer therapy, and gas separation) are clarified. Hopefully, this study is capable of arousing more attention from increasing scientists to study large-cavity pillar[ n ]arenes.

Abstract:Exploring organic reactions to construct novel molecules with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features is an essential branch of AIE research. The fast-paced application of AIE materials in various disciplines, including photoelectricity, molecular biology, medicine, and materials science, has led to an ever-growing need for new AIE molecules. Unlike the synthesis of most "earlier generations"of AIE fluorogens (AIEgens) that require tedious and harsh reactions, chemists now shift their synthetic focus to a selection of reliable and straightforward reactions. The Diels-Alder reaction has been overlooked in this field. Herein, we report a catalyst-free Diels-Alder reaction between 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran and a series of electron-deficient alkynes to create AIEgens. Photophysical properties of our synthesized 1,3,4-triphenyl-1,4-dihydro-1,4-epoxynaphthalene (ENAP) derivatives are studied systematically, manifesting their AIE characteristics and structure-fluorescence property relationships. Finally, we highlight the diverse applications of some selected ENAP derivatives in latent fingerprint detection, cell imaging, and bacterial staining.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) polymers are a series of novel luminescent materials. These materials have experienced an exponential growth of research interests and are rapidly developing into an emerging field. AIE polymers boast high aggregated-state emissions, diverse structures and the use of various synthetic methods for preparation; they also demonstrate good solubility and processability compared with AIE small molecules. Furthermore, additional functionalities can be introduced into AIE polymers through a large number of simple and convenient synthetic strategies. Great progress has been made after the publication of a comprehensive review on AIE macromolecules. Herein, the newly developed AIE polymer systems are summarized, with an emphasis on the synthetic methods used to generate the polymers and their structures and applications. The structural design and synthetic approaches of a series of functional nonconjugated or conjugated AIE linear polymers with AIEgens on the side chains or main chains, as well as star-shaped or hyperbranched AIE polymers with AIEgens on the core or terminal parts are discussed. The advanced performance of AIE polymers in a series of practical applications, such as fluorescent sensors, stimuli-responsive materials, biological applications, porous materials and circularly polarized luminescence, is also introduced. The rapid development and large variety of potential applications of AIE polymers have demonstrated that this prosperous and promising field presents great opportunities.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) possess the unique property of enhanced fluorescence and photostability in aggregated states, making them exceptional materials for the convergence of imaging and phototherapy. With their inherent advantages, AIEgens are propelling the field of nanomedicine into a vibrant frontier in the phototheranostics of a spectrum of diseases, particularly in the realm of cancer immunotherapy. AIEgens-based therapeutics enhance the cancer immune response through a variety of approaches, including real-time image-guided precise therapy, induction of programmed cell death, metabolic reprogramming, and modulation of the tumor microenvironment. Additionally, they contribute to the synergistic effect of immune checkpoint inhibition, a pivotal aspect of modern cancer immunotherapy strategies. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the integration of AIEgens in nanomedicine and their role in immune adaptation, highlighting the advantages, basic action mechanisms, and recent advancement of AIEgens as promising therapeutic platform for cancer immunotherapy.

Abstract:Over the last decade, pillararenes have shown remarkable potential in a variety of fields by virtue of their symmetrical pillar-shaped structures, flexible functionalization, and unique host–guest interactions. For diverse pillararene-based functional materials and technical applications, the tailored design and construction of pillararene-based supramolecular structures and assemblies are critical. Rationally modifying pillararenes and guests endows these supramolecular functional materials with stimuli-responsiveness, selective target recognition, and tunable self-assembly, among others. In this review, we summarize various forms of pillararene-based supramolecular assemblies or composite materials, along with their applications. In addition, we specifically introduce the employment of different pillararene-based systems in sensing and detection, adsorption and separation, modification of nanomaterials, and nanomedicines.

Herein, recent development on the synthesis of pillar[n]arenes and pillar[n]arene derivatives, and their host-guest chemistry, i. e., molecular recognition and selective binding towards guest molecules, and their self-assembly properties was reviewed. In the review, we summarize the recent progress of pillararenes as antimicrobial agents, ranging from cationic pillararenes, peptide modified pillararenes to sugar functionalized pillararenes. Moreover, the structure and activity relationships are presented, and their mechanism of action are discussed. As a state-of-the-art technology, the opportunities and outlook are also outlined in the emerging field. Overall, the potent inhibitory activity and high biocompatibility make them potential for development of novel antimicrobial agents.

Abstract:Pillar[n]arenes are new generation of supramolecular macrocyclic host, which exhibit excellent host-guest recognition properties. In the last decade, functional materials constructed from pillar[n]arenes have been attracted more and more attention and displayed outstanding characteristics, such as stimuli-responsiveness, self-healing and adaptability. In this mini-review, we provide a survey of the pillar[n]arene-based literatures covering light-harvesting systems, functional hydrogels, and solid materials. It is anticipated that more and more pillar[n]arenes-based advanced materials with multi-functional properties will appear in the near future.

Abstract:AIE luminogens (AIEgens) are type of unique fluorescent molecules that exhibit significantly enhanced luminescent properties and excellent photostability in the aggregated state. Recently, it has been found that some AIEgens can produce reactive oxygen species, which means that they may have potential enzyme-like activities and thus termed "AIEzymes". Consequently, the discovery and design of novel AIEgens with enzyme-like properties have emerged as a new and exciting research direction. Additionally, AIEgens can enhance the catalytic efficiency of traditional nanozymes by direct combination, thereby endowing multifunctionality to the nanozymes. In this regard, nanozymes with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, which represents a win–win integration, not only take full advantage of the low cost and stability of nanozymes, but also incorporate the excellent biocompatibility and fluorescence properties of AIEgens. These synergistic compounds bring new opportunities for various applications, making AIEzymes of interest in biomedical research, food analysis, environmental monitoring, and especially imaging-guided diagnostics. This review will provide an overview of the latest strategies and achievements in the rational design and preparation of AIEzymes, as well as current research trends, future challenges and prospective solutions. We expect that this work will encourage and motivate more people to study and explore AIEzymes to further promote their applications in various fields.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is an intriguing and significant photophysical phenomenon currently attracting intense research interest. Different from conventional luminophores suffering from the commonly acknowledged aggregation-caused quenching problem, luminogens with AIE characteristics (AIEgens) are more promising to be applied to various research fronts. In the family of AIEgens, those created based on main group heterocycles are diverse in functionality owing to their unique electronic structures and thus distinctive optoelectronic processes. In this review article, the newly emerging AIEgens based on heterocycles of silicon, sulphur, oxygen, phosphorus, nitrogen, boron, etc., are introduced, and their intrinsic working mechanism and substituent effect are elucidated in detail. These insights and systematical elucidation of the correlation between structure and function are of great significance for fundamental understanding, and are surely conducive to the design of new AIEgens and the exploration of efficient AIE-active functional materials with specific applications.
