Abstract:Mining uranium from seawater is highly desirable for sustaining the increasing demand for nuclear fuel; however, access to this unparalleled reserve has been limited by competitive adsorption of a wide variety of concentrated competitors, especially vanadium. Herein, we report the creation of a series of uranyl-specific "hooks" and the decoration of them into the nanospace of porous organic polymers to afford uranium nanotraps for seawater uranium extraction. Manipulating the relative distances and angles of amidoxime moieties in the ligands enabled the creation of uranyl-specific "hooks" that feature ultrahigh affinity and selective sequestration of uranium with a distribution coefficient threefold higher compared to that of vanadium, overcoming the long-term challenge of the competing adsorption of vanadium for uranium extraction from seawater. The optimized uranium nanotrap (2.5 mg) can extract more than one-third of the uranium in seawater (5 gallons), affording an enrichment index of 3836 and thus presenting a new benchmark for uranium adsorbent. Moreover, with improved selectivity, the uranium nanotraps could be regenerated using a mild base treatment. The synergistic combination of experimental and theoretical analyses in this study provides a mechanistic approach for optimizing the selectivity of chelators toward analytes of interest.The nanotrap featuring uranyl-specific "hooks" was created, which demonstrates ultrahigh enrichment index in seawater uranium extraction, overcoming the long-term challenge of the competitive adsorption of vanadium.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Nature can efficiently recognize specific ions by exerting second-sphere interactions onto well-folded protein scaffolds. However, a considerable challenge remains to artificially manipulate such affinity, while being cost-effective in managing immense amounts of water samples. Here, we propose an effective approach to regulate uranyl capture performance by creating bio-inspired nano-traps, illustrated by constructing chelating moieties into porous frameworks, where the binding motif's coordinative interaction towards uranyl is enhanced by introducing an assistant group, reminiscent of biological systems. Representatively, the porous framework bearing 2-aminobenzamidoxime is exceptional in sequestering high uranium concentrations with sufficient capacities (530 mg g(-1)) and trace quantities, including uranium in real seawater (4.36 mg g(-1), triple the benchmark). Using a combination of spectroscopic, crystallographic, and theory calculation studies, it is revealed that the amino substituent assists in lowering the charge on uranyl in the complex and serves as a hydrogen bond acceptor, boosting the overall uranyl affinity of amidoxime.
Two-Dimensional Imprinting Strategy to Create Specific Nanotrap for Selective Uranium Adsorption with Ultrahigh Capacity

Abstract:Uranium extraction is highly challenging because of low uranium concentration, high salinity, and a large number of competing ions in different environments. The template strategy is developed to address the defect of poor selectivity, but the adsorption capacity is limited by cavity blocking during the preparation of materials. Herein, a two-dimensional (2D) imprinting strategy is adopted to design 2D imprinted networks with specific nanotraps for effective uranium capture. The imprinted networks are established through the condensation polymerization of uranyl complexes, which are formed by aromatic building units coordinating with uranyl ions on the equatorial plane. Different from traditional imprinting materials that contain many invalid cavities (buried cavities or unreleased cavities), the as-prepared adsorbents possess tailored 2D nanotraps, which are open and specific to uranyl. Thus, the optimized networks not only show excellent selectivity for uranium (<i>K</i><sub>d</sub> = 964,500 mL/g in multi-ion solution) and slight disturbance of high salinity but also possess an ultrahigh adsorption capacity of 1365.7 mg/g. In addition, this adsorbent shows a high extraction efficiency for uranium under a wide range of pH conditions and exhibits good regeneration performance. This work proposes a pioneering strategy of 2D imprinting networks to capture uranium specifically with high capacity and can be applied to material design in many other fields.

Abstract:Uranium extraction from seawater is a promising approach for ensuring continued uranium fuel supply to the nuclear power industry. However, extracting uranium by this route is challenging due to the low concentration of uranium, high ionic strength, and marine micro-organisms in seawater. Recently, a range of novel porous adsorbent materials have been developed for uranium extraction from ocean water. These adsorbents rely on specific pore characteristics and functional groups (hydroxyl, carboxyl, amidoxime, phosphate, etc.) to achieve a high affinity and selectivity for uranyl ions (UO22+) relative to other ions. Relying strongly on coordination principles, specific binding sites for uranium are assembled in these porous materials, with cooperative actions of several functional groups often used to achieve strong uranium capture and adsorption selectivity. In addition to traditional adsorbents, adsorption-photocatalytic and adsorption-electrocatalytic materials are also being pursued, which include both specific adsorption sites and photocatalytic or electrocatalytic moieties in their frameworks. These innovative strategies allow the conversion of uranyl ions into harvestable solid products (such as UO2 or Na2O(UO3·H2O)x) and result in high extraction efficiencies together with good biofouling resistance. This perspective aims to capture some of the recent breakthroughs in the design of porous materials for selective uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract:Uranium is one of the important nuclear resource.Extracting uranium from seawater is considered to be a promising way that can resolve the uranium resource shortage in the future.The recent progress of China in the uranium adsorption materials used in seawater has been summarized in this paper.It was concluded that the matrix structure and the micro function configuration played an important role in the uranium absorption performance through comparing different material types such as polymer materials,carbon materials,silicate material,etc.Combined with the theoretical calculation and domestic scale test in real seawater,it is proposed that the uranium adsorption materials have application value only with large specific surface area,excellent uranium selectively absorption ability and stable in the open flow seawater system.

Abstract:Abundant salts and complex constituents pose challenges to the enrichment of trace-level uranyl from field water samples. On the basis of the chemical behavior of the uranyl cation in several physical chemical conditions (in the presence of MgCl2 etc.), we developed a facile and green strategy to improve the uranyl extraction from field water samples, different from the traditional way with organic impregnation. In our systems about nano-Mg(OH)(2) treating salt lake brine, when the adsorbent is pretreated with a trace amount of UO22+ ion, the ability to extract uranyl from brine can increase by 2-5 times. The molecular dynamics simulation and time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy analysis show that, in the preadsorption stage, UO22+ ions can steadily bind to the Mg(OH)(2) (001) surface because of the interaction with surface hydroxyl groups. When pretreated Mg(OH)2 was exposed to brine, the coordination interaction between the preloaded UO22+ ion and the [UO2(CO3)(x)((2x-2)-)] in solution engenders good selectivity and affinity for uranyl over competitive ions in brine. Besides, the coordination number of UO22+ by carbonate oxygen is large, which further facilitates subsequent adsorption. Such strategy does not introduce other impurities and can apply to metal-oxides-type adsorbents, e.g., TiO2. This study should shed light on further improvement of efficient uranyl extraction from field samples and give insights into the mechanism understanding of uranyl adsorption in real systems.
Nano-tentacled interconnected channels organic gel for rapid uranium extraction from seawater

Abstract:Due to dwindling terrestrial uranium resources and escalating ecological pressures, the long-term viability of uranium supply has become a critical concern. The immense uranium reserves in seawater present a potential solution, yet extraction technology faces dual challenges of efficiency and adaptability to complex marine environments. Current interconnected porous adsorbents, despite their high flux properties, are limited by low specific surface area and weak mechanical strength, which constrain their effectiveness. Here, inspired by the unique hierarchical structures of marine organisms, we describe an organic gel adsorbent with supermacroporous and interconnected channels (10 ∼ 100 µm) adorned with "nano-tentacle" structures. This design significantly enhances the specific surface area by 18 times, increasing adsorption sites and imparting antibacterial properties. Notably, this adsorbent maintains structural integrity and superior mechanical strength (1.32 MPa tensile and 2.44 MPa compressive strength) even when fully saturated. During a 23-day trial in natural seawater, a uranium adsorption rate of 0.332 mg g⁻¹ day⁻¹ was achieved. This work offers a pioneering approach for the design and fabrication of hierarchical structured adsorbents, highlighting the immense potential of extracting uranium from seawater for sustainable energy production.

Abstract:Seawater holds tremendous uranium resources, which can sustain the global nuclear industry for thousands of years. However, the existing technologies for uranium extraction from seawater (UES) are constrained by the ultra-low uranium concentration and high interference background. A three-dimensional amidoximated Ti 3 C 2 T x /ZIF-67 architecture (TAZ) is fabricated for highly efficient uranium capture via electrosorption. Besides the excellent electrical conductivity of Ti 3 C 2 T x , the introduction of amidoxime groups and ZIF-67 nanoparticles endows TAZ with porous structure and abundant active sites, which favors the rapid uranyl ions diffusion and enhanced electrosorption. TAZ displays a remarkable uranium extraction uptake of 2224.54 mg/g under an applied voltage of 1 V. Meanwhile, TAZ possesses prominent uranium selectivity resulting from amidoxime groups and imidazole N. TAZ also maintains a good reusability of 63.51 % after 10 cycles. Furthermore, the bactericidal rates of TAZ against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus achieve nearly 100 %. The excellent properties have made TAZ apt for UES with a high uranium uptake of 11.40 mg/g in 24 h under an electric field, which is 5.3 times higher than the physicochemical adsorption. Our work provided a strategy to design high-performance nanomaterials for efficient uranium mining from seawater.

Abstract:Mining uranium from seawater using highly efficient adsorbents has been redeemed as one of the most urgent demands for sustainable nuclear power. However, it remains a formidable task to achieve sufficient extraction capacities for practical applications given the trace concentration of uranium (∼3.3 ppb), the competition from massive coexisting ions, and the extreme complexity of marine environment. This review briefly introduces the coordination chemistry behind uranium extraction from seawater (UES). Subsequently, we summarize and discuss existing strategies for designing highly efficient UES adsorbents toward one or more desired directions (such as high affinity, high selectivity, fast kinetics, and excellent antifouling property) to boost the uptake capacity in natural seawater. They mainly include adsorption through optimization of ligands, bifunctional synergy, bioinspired and biomimetic, molecular imprinting, electrically driven and photo-driven strategies, and antimicrobial and antifouling strategies. Finally, four critical perspectives regarding the design strategies of UES adsorbents are highlighted. The goal of this review is to assist researchers in this field in designing promising adsorbents for practical UES.

Abstract:Herein, a hollow spherical pillar[5]arene-based polymer (P5-AO) adsorbent was synthesized. The P5-AO adsorbent was capable of effectively capturing uranium from simulated seawater (139.5 mg g-1) and real seawater (8.1 mg g-1). Abstract:Extracting uranium from natural seawater is a huge challenge because of the complex environment of seawater and extremely low uranium concentration. In this work, amidoximized hydroxyapatite (AO-HAP) was prepared to capture uranium from seawater. The introduction of amidoxime group greatly improved the recognition ability of AO-HAP for uranium in neutral and weakly alkaline environment (pH = 7–8). The uptake process of AO-HAP for uranium was fitted by Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, suggesting that the capture behavior of AO-HAP for uranium was a homogeneous chemisorption. The saturated uranium uptake capacity of AO-HAP was 865.3 mg g −1 from aqueous solution, which was better than most of other reported uranium extractants. More importantly, AO-HAP had good regeneration ability and excellent adsorption performance in natural seawater (6.25 mg g −1 in 30 days). In sum, AO-HAP is a highly potential candidate as adsorbent material for the efficient extraction of uranium from seawater.

Abstract:Efficient capture uranium from seawater/wastewater is important to not only supply raw material for nuclear energy but also avert the environmental threat from uranium-containing solutions. It is of great significance to design highly efficient adsorbents with stability and recyclability. Herein, the acid-tolerant nanofibrous adsorbent was synthesized by a combination of chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) co-electrospinning, crosslink treatment, acrylonitrile grafting and amidoximation. The resultant CS/PVA-AO nanofibers exhibited the maximum uranium adsorption capacity of 714 mg g−1, larger than that of CS based sorbents. The CS/PVA-AO nanofibers demonstrated reliable stability in acid conditions as well as in adsorption–desorption cycling. The model fitting investigation showed that the uranium adsorbed on CS/PVA-AO nanofibers by the Langmuir adsorption model with the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics. This research provides a more efficient and convenient option for uranium recovery from seawater/wastewater.

Abstract:Electric-field driven uranium extraction from seawater has been proved to greatly enhance the performances of various adsorbents via gathering uranyl ions at the surfaces, but high-concentration interfering cations would also be enriched which generates shielding effects to reduce adsorption capacity. To address this issue, we have fabricated nanofiltration membranes with sieving-adsorption properties by choosing polyamidoxime (PAO) as substrates and polyamide as skin layers. On the one hand, the polyamide skin layers fabricated by interfacial polymerization could effectively separate uranyl ions from other metal ions according to the size-sieving effect since the size of uranyl ions is much larger than most interfering cations. The results demonstrated that the nanofiltration membranes could nearly 100 % reject uranyl ions while the rejections of other metal ions below 30 %. On the other hand, the rejected uranyl ions would be enriched at the surfaces of PAO substrates and followed by adsorption. The increased uranium concentrations are beneficial for both adsorption capacity as well as adsorption rate. Therefore, the adsorption capacity increased by 30 % compared with the pristine PAO adsorbents. This work not only provides a new strategy for the design of high-performance adsorbents, but also could promote the engineering process of uranium extraction from seawater which has an important scientific significance and application value.

Abstract:Amidoxime-functionalized adsorbents have been pursued for uranium extraction from seawater, though competitive adsorption of vanadium and copper ions remains an issue. Herein, we report the successful design of a family of covalent organic framework (COF) adsorbents adopting an alternative chelating strategy for uranium binding comprising hydrazine-carbonyl sites with assistant groups for enhanced uranium uptake. A COF possessing hydroxypropoxy assistant groups (denoted as COF-R5) showed exceptional selectivity for uranium over vanadium and other metal ions, resulting in a fast uranium adsorption kinetics and high uptake capacity of 11.3 mg/g with a distribution coefficient over 9.2 × 105 mL/g in seawater, which exceeded most COFs previously reported in the literature. Mechanism studies revealed that hydroxypropoxy groups enhanced the binding of UO2 2+ at the COF’s hydrazine-carbonyl sites through hydrogen bonding interactions and charge stabilization effects, thus boosting the overall uranium affinity and adsorption capacity. Results validate the developed “uranium nanotraps” strategy for potential large-scale uranium extraction.
Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Uranium Extraction from Seawater over an Amidoxime‐Functionalized In–N–C Catalyst

Abstract:Porous indium−nitrogen−carbon capsules functionalized with flexible amidoxime groups enable highly efficient uranium extraction from seawater. The flexible amidoxime groups allow selective uranyl adsorption, while the InNx single atom sites provide a reversible single electron transfer platform for uranyl conversion to a harvestable Na2O(UO3·H2O)x precipitate via a U(V) intermediate. Seawater contains uranium at a concentration of ≈3.3 ppb, thus representing a rich and sustainable nuclear fuel source. Herein, an adsorption–electrocatalytic platform is developed for uranium extraction from seawater, comprising atomically dispersed indium anchored on hollow nitrogen‐doped carbon capsules functionalized with flexible amidoxime moieties (In–Nx–C–R, where R denotes amidoxime groups). In–Nx–C–R exhibits excellent uranyl capture properties, enabling a uranium removal rate of 6.35 mg g−1 in 24 h, representing one of the best uranium extractants reported to date. Importantly, In–Nx–C–R demonstrates exceptional selectivity for uranium extraction relative to vanadium in seawater (8.75 times more selective for the former). X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveals that the amidoxime groups serve as uranyl chelating sites, thus allowing selective adsorption over other ions. XAS and in situ Raman results directly indicate that the absorbed uranyl can be electrocatalytically reduced to an unstable U(V) intermediate, then re‐oxidizes to U(VI) in the form of insoluble Na2O(UO3·H2O)x for collection, through reversible single electron transfer processes involving InNx sites. These results provide detailed mechanistic understanding of the uranium extraction process at a molecular level. This work provides a roadmap for the adsorption–electrocatalytic extraction of uranium from seawater, adding to the growing suite of technologies for harvesting valuable metals from the earth's oceans.

Abstract:High-speed capturing of uranyl (UO22+) ions from seawater elicits unprecedented interest for the sustainable development of the nuclear energy industry. However, the ultralow concentration (∼3.3 μg L–1) of uranium element leads to the slow ion diffusion inside the adsorbent particle, especially after the transfer paths are occupied by the coexisted interfering ions. Considering the geometric dimension of UO22+ ion (a maximum length of 6.04–6.84 Å), the interlayer spacing of graphene sheets was covalently pillared with phenyl-based units into twice the ionic length (13 Å) to obtain uranyl-specific nanofluidic channels. Applying a negative potential (−1.3 V), such a charge-governed region facilitates a unipolar ionic transport, where cations are greatly accelerated and co-ions are repelled. Notably, the resulting adsorbent gives the highest adsorption velocity among all reported materials. The adsorption capacity measured after 56 days of exposure in natural seawater is evaluated to be ∼16 mg g–1. Shear-induced fabrication of SiO2 nano-meshes for efficient uranium capture

Abstract:The extraction of uranium from seawater and the safe treatment of wastewater containing uranium (VI) were important to ensure the sustainable development of nuclear-related energy sources. Two-dimensional silica nanomaterials have been extensively investigated in the field of uranium adsorption due to their high adsorption capacity, short equilibration times, and easily modified surface groups. However, the two-dimensional mesoporous silica nanomaterial preparation has become a challenge due to the lack of natural sheet templating agents. The reason will hinder the development of silica nanomaterials for uranium extraction. Here, the specific surface area silica nanomeshes (HSMSMs) uranium adsorbent was prepared by a high shear method to induce nanobubble formation. HSMSMs showed a high uranium adsorption capacity of 822 mg-U/g-abs in seawater with the uranium adsorption concentration was 50 mg/L, which was approximately 2 times higher than the conventional mesoporous silica nanomaterials. Compared to HSMSMs, the amidoxime-modified high specific surface area silica nanomesh (HSMSMs-AO) demonstrated good selectivity for U(VI), and the uranium ions uptake was 877 mg-U/g-abs in 50 mg/L uranium-spiked simulated seawater. Due to HSMSMs-AO's stable chemical properties and high mechanical strength, HSMSMs-AO also displayed long service life. Benefiting from the simple preparation method and high adsorption capacity of HSMSMs, HSMSMs could be a promising candidate for large-scale extraction of uranium from seawater.

Abstract:Consecutive uranium extraction from seawater is a promising approach to secure the long-term supply of uranium and the sustainability of nuclear energy. Here, we report an ultra-highly efficient strategy via studtite nanodots growth with impressive uranyl uptake capacity of ~ 154.50 mg/g from natural seawater in 12 consecutive days (i.e., average for ~ 12.875 mg/g/day). Uranyl can be extracted as studtite under visible light via the reaction between the adsorbed uranyl and the photogenerated H2O2 with imine-based Covalent-Organic Framework photocatalysts. In detail, over Tp-Bpy, Tp-Bpy-2 and Tp-Py with multiple uranyl chelating sites, uranyl is found extracted as studtite nanodots which can be eluted readily, while over Tp-Bd and Tb-Bpy, uranyl is transformed into studtite nanorods that is more inert for elution. Abundant chelating sites of uranyl via structural regulation of COF photocatalysts are proved to facilitate the formation and efficient elution of studtite nanodots.

Abstract:Amidoxime (AO)-based adsorbents are currently regarded as the most promising materials for extracting uranium (U) from seawater, but have limited adsorption capacities. To overcome this challenge, there is an urgent need to develop novel extraction groups with multifunctional capabilities such as adsorption and reduction. In this study, we proposed for the first time to introduce hydrazide groups with reduction and chelation functionalities into adsorbent materials. These groups were integrated into poly(ethylene)-poly(amidoxime) membranes creating a two-in-one bifunctional structure with synergistic adsorption and in-situ reduction to enhance uranium extraction from seawater. Our results showed that the adsorption capacity of the hydrazide-functionalized materials in uranyl solution and simulated seawater increased by 22%, indicating the existence of a synergistic binding effect. Following a 30-day adsorption experiment conducted in natural seawater, the uranium adsorption capacity reached a notable 6.76 mg-U/g-ads. Additionally, XPS analysis demonstrated that uranyl ions were adsorbed in the hydrazide-functionalized materials and were reduced to their low-valence state during adsorption, from U(VI) to U(IV). The adsorbents, with dual reduction/chelation effects, provide new insights and possibilities for designing novel uranium adsorbents for future uranium extraction from seawater.
