Abstract:Due to the weak charge conduction ability of cobalt-aluminum layered bimetallic hydroxide (CoAl LDHs), it is difficult to demonstrate its excellent theoretical energy storage ability when used as a supercapacitor material. The heterogeneous construction, as a commonly employed approach to enhance the performance of nanomaterials, leverages the respective advantages of two monomer materials to achieve synergistic improvements in performance. Here, the conductive polymer polypyrrole (PPy) was incorporated to fabricate a composite structure based on CoAl LDHs, aiming to enhance its electrochemical energy storage performance. The CoAl LDHs/PPy-20 composite exhibited enhanced charge storage properties compared to the individual components, owing to the synergistic promotion between CoAl LDHs and PPy. At a current density of 1A g −1 , the specific capacity reached 849.7 F g −1 , surpassing that of both CoAl LDHs and PPy by factors of 1.2 and 2.8 respectively. Furthermore, even at a high current density of 20 A g −1 , it retained 40% of its initial capacity. By assembling asymmetrical supercapacitors with commercially activated carbon and the composite material, the CoAl LDHs/PPy-20//AC achieves an impressive energy density of 21.5 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 902 W kg −1 . Even after undergoing 5000 cycles with a current density of 10 Ag −1 , the energy storage performance remains unaffected, demonstrating excellent cycle stability. The composite strategy presented herein offers a viable approach to enhance the electrochemical energy storage performance of CoAl LDHs, particularly in terms of its stability.
