Abstract:As a writer of fiction, D. H. Lawrence spent his career maneuvering between heterosexual and homosexual preferences. In order to make a living, he needed to use mainstream publishers. They encouraged his bold work but only if he censored it. What especially interested Lawrence were the differences between male and female orgasm-not just the mechanics but their meaning. Over his career (1910-1930) his views on orgasm evolved from simple release, to ambivalent forms of lust, to a challenging separation of responses: unfathomable silence for males and articulate expression for females. The sexes are privileged differently, and the categorical separation that Lawrence discovers is a revelation. This essay analyzes five of his most famous novels, from Sons and Lovers to Lady Chatterley's Lover, and, based on revisions in his texts, reaches conclusions that differ from those most readers have held. In revising, Lawrence came to reshape his characters' responses into complex, often-coded narratives.

Abstract:More than any other twentieth-century writer, D. H. Lawrence developed a profound understanding of painting and evaluated this art form through the prism of his idiosyncratic ontological scheme. In allegiance to his polaristic philosophy, in which everything is created by the opposition of static and dynamic, mind and body, optical and tactile, “Will-to-Motion” and “Will-to- Inertia,” light and darkness, Lawrence conceived the history of visual arts as a mirror of this universal opposition of ultimate metaphysical forces. Despite his general view that Western art was entirely under the dominion of idea, mind, and light, Lawrence pointed to several examples in which dark, bodily, and haptic experiences were processed pictorially. This essay intends to introduce Lawrence as an art historian who understood works of art and art historical periods as constituted out of a never-ending power struggle between the corporeal and the spiritual, and who always sought and called for their reconciliation and balance in his literature.

Abstract:This article discusses twentieth century societal destructiveness as reflected in four key prose works by D.H. Lawrence--the novels Sons and Lovers, Women in Love, Lady Chatterley's Lover and the early travel book Twilight in Italy. Sons and Lovers, which projects the young Lawrence persona's struggle between life and death, partly accounts for a deepening sensitivity to life and death in modern society in Lawrence's subsequent works. It is seen that Lawrence's writings depict the perilous trends today towards the mechanization of our fundamental being, and the resultant life-threatening qualities of sensationalism and reduction of the individual inner life.

Abstract:The reception of the novel by F. M. Dostoevsky “Notes from the Underground” in the works and correspondence of D. H. Lawrence is analyzed in the article. The novelty of the study is in the fact that the influence of this story on Lawrence’s prose is being studied for the first time. Particular attention is paid to Lawrence’s letters to the translator S. S. Kotelyansky, with whom the English writer shared his impressions of reading the works of Russian classics, especially Dostoevsky, as well as to one of the letters addressed to the writer G. Campbell, which contains the only direct reference to “Notes from the Underground” in Lawrence. This letter reveals an individual interpretation of the story by Lawrence. It is proved that this interpretation turns out to be close to the reading of the Notes by L. Shestov. The question is raised about the existing parallels between the text of Dostoevsky and the novels of D. G. Lawrence (“Women in Love”, “The Lost Girl”, “Rainbow” and “Aaron’s Rod”). The similarity is seen in the peculiar interpretation of the Underground concept by Lawrence. It is shown that the image of the Underground in the works of the English writer (usually expressed by the words “underworld”, “subterranean”) is always somehow connected with the irrational principle and is involved in the formation of Lawrence sensualism.

Abstract:This article explores D.H. Lawrence’s autobiographical novel, Sons and Lovers (1913), through the lens of ecofeminism, focusing on the intricate emotional relationships between the protagonist, Paul, his mother, Mrs. Morel, and his two lovers, Miriam and Clara. In the context of the Industrial Revolution’s large-scale mechanization, Lawrence’s work sheds light on the profound environmental consequences of this era on the sustenance of modern human. The narrative further suggests that modern humanity has suffered significant suppression and destruction due to the dominance of mechanical civilization, resulting in a pervasive imbalance between humankind and nature, as well as among different societal groups, particularly in gender relations. Lawrence’s astute portrayal places gender relations on the grand stage of industrial civilization, resonating with the plight of both the natural environment and women who endured oppression under anthropocentrism or patriarchy. This paper adopts an intersectional perspective that simultaneously addresses the human-to-nature issue and the male-to-female issue within the framework of ecofeminism. Its primary objective is to illuminate Lawrence’s endeavor to chart a path for modern humanity’s survival. In doing so, Lawrence advocates for a harmonious equilibrium between societal development and the natural world, alongside the principle of gender equality. This approach embodies the essence of ecofeminism and underscores Lawrence’s profound humanistic concerns.

Abstract:Sons and Lovers (1913) is one of D.H. Lawrence’s most prominent novels in terms of psychological complexities characteristic of most, if not all, of his other novels. Many studies have been conducted on the Oedipus complex theory and psychological relationship between men and women in Lawrence’s novels reflecting the early twentieth century norms of life. This paper reexamines Sons and Lovers from the perspective of rivalry based on Alfred Adler’s psychological studies. The discussion tackles the sibling rivalry between the members of the Morels and extends to reexamining the rivalry between other characters. This concept is discussed in terms of two levels of relationships. First, between Paul and William as brothers on the one hand, and Paul and father and mother, on the other. Second, the rivalry triangle of Louisa, Miriam and Mrs. Morel. The qualitative pattern of the paper focuses on the textual analysis of the novel to show that Sons and Lovers can be approached through the concept of rivalry and sibling Rivalry. Abstract:David Herbert Lawrence is one of the major writers of 20th-century English literature. His representative works include Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, and Women in Love, which cover different fields such as novels, poems, essays, and dramas. He is known for his depiction of human emotions, sexuality, and social issues. His novel Sons and Lovers uses symbolism skillfully and intensely, in which darkness, coal mine, sunset, the moon, flowers, and so on are imagery. The use of this imagery profoundly reveals the complex emotions and feelings of the characters, thus better interpreting the various psychological activities deep inside the characters as well as the complex relationships between the characters. This paper contains two parts. The first part discusses the functions of symbolism in this novel, including four aspects: enriching the meaning, revealing the characters in depth, intensifying the emotional experience, and focusing on the theme. The second part focuses on the three aspects of the symbolism represented by the “flowers”, namely, the “flower” as a symbol of family, the “flower” as a symbol of freedom, and the “flower” as a symbol of growth and change. Through these interpretations, this study hopes to interpret the main idea of the novel in a deeper way and to enable readers to have a better understanding of the characters, the plot, the relationship between the characters, and the use of symbolism in the novel.

Abstract:Abstract: This study looks at how societal norms and gender roles are portrayed in D.H. Lawrence's novel Sons and Lovers and how they affect the female characters. In the sociocultural backdrop of late Victorian England, this study examines the complexity of female identity, agency, and autonomy through a thorough analysis of the three main female characters: Gertrude Morel, Miriam Leivers, and Clara Dawes. Using theoretical frameworks from social constructivism, gender studies, and feminist theory, the study explores how societal norms and gender roles influence the relationships, ideas, and behaviors of the female characters. By analyzing the narrative strategies, symbolism, locations, objects, and language that Lawrence uses, the research clarifies the novel's complex representation of social norms and gender expectations. The article also addresses Sons and Lovers applicability to current debates concerning gender issues and social standards, emphasizing the novel's lasting value as a piece of literature that elicits contemplation on the survival of patriarchal systems and the necessity of social transformation. The article concludes by outlining potential directions for future investigation and study in this field, such as interdisciplinary studies that look at the intersections between gender expectations and other identity markers and comparative assessments of gender portrayal in other literary works.

Abstract:This article endeavors to come up with the novel Sons and Lovers with the view of Oedipus complex which turned out at the time when D.H. Lawrence set off to rejuvenate the new generation writers along with the readers throughout his novel to be familiar with the neo type of complication which is related to Freudian Theory of Psychosexual Development or Organic evolution. Following the footprint of Sophocles, Lawrence depicts his neo form of complexity in accordance with the philosophy of psychoanalysis but in different way that is in reality the influential work Oedipus Rex (Oedipus Tyrannus). The enduring psychological pressure and anxiety always leg-pulls the mind of the protagonist Paul Morel and makes him anesthetized in absence of both his mother and beloved. It is Lawrence’s first full-fledged novel where he portrays his uneasiness overshadowing his romances with two women. This complication is the root of all problems that actually imposed on the Protagonist to love his mother with all the intensity of his soul. Furthermore, there develops an unnatural bond of interdependence between Paul and his mother which leads to further complications in his emotional life.

Abstract:The themes of The Golden Notebook have been one of the major concerns of the Western critical world. Many critics believe that the novel is a reflection of Lessing' s spiritual confusion and a confession of her divided mind. However, after an exploration into the author' s creative intention and a close reading of the novel, this essay argues that The Golden Notebook is a philosophical work which investigates human beings and humanity in an artistic way. The first two parts of the novel examine Marx' s historical view of humanity. Its third and fourth parts are focused on Freud' s essentialist view of humanity, and the last two parts carry Lessing' s unique understanding of man and humanity. The essay concludes that the core of the novel lies in its interrogation and reflection of humanity.

Abstract:The Trespasser focuses on the story of the main character Sigmund's extramarital affairs, addressing ethical dilemmas, ethical choices, and ethical tragicality. Sigmund's ethical dilemmas reflected in two aspects: One is the imbalance between Sigmund's emotion and social morality, namely, the disequilibrium between physical pleasure and social moral norms, aesthetical freedom and social moral responsibility, individual experience and social moral cognition. The other is the conflicts between his multiple ethical identities, including the conflicts between the identities of husband and lover, and between the identities of father and lover. Additionally, it reveals his ethical choice of emotional freedom over social morality in the former ethical dilemma, as well as its constant escape via space transfer in the latter ethical dilemma. The former choice reflects the preference of physical pleasure, aesthetical freedom and physical experience over social moral norms, social moral responsibilities and social moral cognition. While the latter choice displays the ethical path of "lover-family-suicide" through the spatial framework of "leaving home-returning home-abandoning home," which is intended to present the tragic outcome of individual's ethical dilemmas. The ethical tragedy has two causes. On the one hand, man is incapable of truly knowing his own body and of incorporating social morality into the experience of self. On the other hand, man disregards what the society demands of him. Meanwhile, these ethical dilemmas and choices reveal not only Lawrence's critique of the industrial capitalist society's suppression of humanity, but also his compassionate values of life.

Abstract:D.H. Lawrence was an outstanding novelist of Britain in the 20th century. While he inherited the essence of the realism, he also absorbed nutrition from modernism and made some great developments, one of which was symbolism. Lawrence applied it in many of his works skillfully, which gave the novels a taste of mystery and indicated the ending of the stories. His famous novel Sons and Lovers is naturally not an exception, in which the use of symbolism is a typical character. The writer made full use of this method. There are three kinds of symbols in this story: symbolic images implying the emotion of the characters, symbolic characters standing for different kinds of love of the hero and symbolic episodes expressing the characters’ inner thoughts. The novel has attracted so much attention partly due to the perfect application of symbolism.

Abstract:As a Victorian novelist and 20th century poet, Thomas Hardy' s thoughts display uniqueness and immortality. In his voluminous literary production permeates strong nostalgic sentiments. It is by no means accidental. With skillful and delicate creative finesse, on his literary characters he casts his personal nostalgic sentiments. The hero Angel Clare in Tess of the D' Urbervilles is a typical example. Through an analysis of Clare' s thoughts, we can safely proclaim that Hardy' s nostalgic sentiments are closely related with a sense of time. Based on an analysis of Clare, this article is devoted to the exploration of the nostalgic sentiments in Hardy's literary creation.

Abstract:This study is an attempt to look at the concerns and issues of modern man in the works of D.H. Lawrence. He is impinged deeply by the misery of the humanity caused by the overlapping of the old and new forms of life. This impact is shown through the Morel family who are struggling with the new cultural life and standards of the materialistic values. Having lived a life in natural surrounding and serenity of a rural life, they found themselves entangled in the industrial Bestwood in England. The novel presents the gallery of characters who are pure and sincere, but are corrupted by the passage of time by new developments in industrial England. This study examines the multifaceted character of Walter Morel and his significance within the framework of D.H. Lawrence’s seminal novel. Through a close textual analysis supplemented by critical perspectives and psychological insights, this study explores Morel’s complex personality, motivations, and impact on the lives of those around him. The title “The Waste of the Best” encapsulates the central paradox of his character—a man endowed with potential yet tragically unable to fulfill it due to inner conflicts and societal pressures. This study aims to unravel the intricacies of Morel’s character, examining how factors such as class, gender roles, and industrialization contribute to his sense of alienation and frustration. By delving into the depths of Walter’s psyche and the dynamics of his relationships, this study offers new insights into one of D.H. Lawrence’s most compelling and enduring literary creations

Abstract:Purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationship between humans, Nature, and humanity and establish a harmonious coexistence, particularly in the wake of industrialization. This article aims to analyze Thomas Hardy's novel, The Return of the Native, from an ecocritical perspective and shed light on Thomas Hardy's ecological consciousness as reflected through the novel's various characters, settings, and plot. The primary objective of this study is to assess how the novel's characters respond to and engage with environmental concerns. Another aim is to trace the evolution of the concern for Nature and humanity, from the Victorian era to the Present, among writers, artists, and intellectuals. The third and final objective is to underscore the significance of reconnecting with Nature, as depicted in the novel. Methodology: This study has used the theory of ecocriticism, a relatively recent theoretical framework. It investigates the intersection of literature and the environment from an interdisciplinary viewpoint, exploring potential solutions for our contemporary environmental predicaments. It constitutes a qualitative research endeavor predominantly employing ecocritical theory to investigate the relationship between the novel's characters and the natural world. Findings: The study concludes that interconnection between humans, humanity, and the natural world is needed to avoid the consequences of environmental degradation, which is being tolerated by humankind. This paper proposes several recommendations to ameliorate contemporary environmental challenges that hold value for researchers, environmentalists, and all stakeholders committed to environmental conservation.

Abstract:Published in 1913, D.H. Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers is one of the classics of English Literature. It narrates the struggles and economic problems of the Morel family, particularly focusing on the complex relationships among the members. Several critical analyses and theses have extensively examined the influence of Freudian psychoanalytical theories, particularly the Oedipus Complex, on the novel. However, not much critical attention has been directed towards the Madonna-whore complex, a conceptual framework articulated by Sigmund Freud and further elaborated upon by feminist scholars. The dichotomous portrayal of women characters in fictional texts by the dominant discourses has been a longstanding concern since ancient times. As the sufferer from mother-complex, the protagonist, Paul cannot feel free himself to find a healthy mutual relationship with the opposite sex due to childhood frustrations in his family. Throughout the novel, Paul vacillates between Miriam and Clara; however, neither can satisfy his “affectionate” and “emotional” needs fully, so he cannot get intimacy with a girl who is either entirely a virginal Madonna or a sinful whore. In the novel, Miriam is portrayed as the embodiment of Mary-like figure, representing purity and affection; on the other hand, Clara assumes the role of a whore figure that satisfies the sensual feelings of the protagonist. This study aims to examine how the Madonna-whore dichotomy has been prevalent during the protagonist’s intimate relationship with the two female characters in Sons and Lovers (1913).
