Abstract:N, P co-doped Cu-based catalyst was synthesized by calcining activated carbon impregnated with diammonium hydrogen phosphate and impregnating active component copper. When the contents of N and P were 0.40% and 2.61% and the reaction temperature was 225 ℃, Cu/20NPAC catalyst had 90.4% acetylene conversion and 88.8% acetaldehyde selectivity, and notably, the catalytic performance remained basically unchanged within 20 h of reaction, which was superior than the Cu-based and Zn-based catalysts reported. The characterization results confirmed the excellent catalytic performance depended on the synergistic effect between N, P doped activated carbon and active component copper. TEM showed that the doped support could effectively improve the dispersion of active component copper and inhibit metal agglomeration. H2-TPR and XPS illustrated reduction of high valence copper were effectively inhibited in catalyst preparation and reaction. In addition, TPD showed an increased adsorption to acetylene. The high activity and stability of the catalyst showed that N, P co-doped support was an effective way to improve the catalytic performance of acetylene hydration.

Abstract:Activated carbon loaded hexaethylphosphoroustriamide (HEPT) copper chloride catalyst was prepared by the impregnation method. The catalytic performance of this catalyst was tested in the acetylene hydrochlorination reaction and compared with that of the activated carbon loaded copper chloride catalyst. At the condition of 140°C, volume space-time velocity of C 2 H 2 on unit mass catalyst of 50 h −1 , molar ratio of HCl to C 2 H 2 of 1.05:1 and real copper loading ( w ) of 12.85%, C 2 H 2 conversion of 90.17% and vinyl chloride selectivity of 95.47% were achieved. Under the same reaction conditions, its catalytic performance is better than that of the activated carbon supported copper chloride catalyst. Through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) characterization methods, it can be confirmed that the catalyst with HEPT has stronger adsorption capacity of hydrogen chloride, which can reduce the reduction of Cu 2+ species, which is responsible for the enhancement of the catalytic performance.

Abstract:This work aims to solve the problems of low reaction activity of Cu-based catalysts and agglomeration of active centers in acetylene hydrochlorination. Cu-based catalysts supported by N-P co-doped activated carbon (AC) with different content (m Cu-x NP/AC) were manufactured and applied in the acetylene hydrochlorination reaction. It was found that the doping of carriers N and P induced the transformation of Cu2+ to Cu+, and the catalytic activity was markedly improved. Under the optimal reaction temperature of 220 °C, the gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of C2H2 was 90 h−1 and V HCl : V C 2 H 2 was 1.15. The initial activity of the 5%Cu-30NP/AC catalyst reached 95.59%. Through some characterization methods showed the addition of N and P improved the dispersion of Cu in carbon, which increased the ratio of Cu+/Cu2+. The measurement results confirmed that the chemisorption capacity of m Cu-x NP/AC for C2H2 decreased slightly, and the chemisorption capacity for HCl increased significantly, which was the reason for the increased activity of the catalyst. Abstract:Cu-based catalysts are a promising alternative to toxic mercury catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination, but their effectiveness is limited due to the poor dispersion and deactivation caused by reduction, agglomeration, and carbon deposition. In this study, the activity and stability of carbon-supported CuCl2 catalysts were largely improved through introducing N-heterocyclic ketones. Remarkably, the N-methyl-2-pyridone (NM2P) coordinated Cu-based catalysts possessed an acetylene conversion over 95% with a better stability under the reaction condition of T = 180 °C, GHSV (C2H2) of 80 h–1, and VHCl/VC2H2 = 1.2. The combined results of characterization and exhaustive density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the O-Cu coordination between NM2P ligand and Cu cation strengthened the combination of reactants and Cu active sites, lowering the key reaction energy barrier, leading to a high activity. Meanwhile, the addition of NM2P ligand significantly inhibited the reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+/Cu0, avoiding the formation of CuCl aggregates and the coking caused by Cu0, enhancing the catalytic stability. Overall, our study provides important insights into the design and optimization of Cu-based catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination.

Abstract:The feasibility of decomplexation removal of typical contaminants in electroplating wastewater, complexed Cu(II) with 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (Cu-HEDP), was first performed by a three-dimensional electrode reactor with activated biochar as particle electrodes. For the case of 50 mg/L Cu-HEDP, Cu(II) removal (90.7%) and PO43- conversion (34.9%) were achieved under the conditions of electric current 40 mA, initial pH 7, acid-treated almond shell biochar (AASB) addition 20 g/L, and reaction time 180 min, with second-order rate constants of 1.10 × 10-3 and 1.94 × 10-5 min-1 respectively. The growing chelating effect between Cu(II) and HEDP and the comprehensive actions of adsorptive accumulation, direct and indirect oxidation given by particle electrodes accounted for the enhanced removal of Cu-HEDP, even though the mineralization of HEDP was mainly dependent on anode oxidation. The performance attenuation of AASB particle electrodes was ascribed to the excessive consumption of oxygen-containing functionalities during the reaction, especially acidic carboxylic groups and quinones on particle electrodes, which decreased from 446.74 to 291.48 µmol/g, and 377.55 to 247.71 µmol/g, respectively. Based on the determination of adsorption behavior and indirect electrochemical oxidation mediated by in situ electrogenerated H2O2 and reactive oxygen species (e.g., •OH), a possible removal mechanism of Cu-HEDP by three-dimensional electrolysis was further proposed.

Abstract:In recent years, the production of acetaldehyde with rich raw materials still has high research value. A series of Zn-HPW/AC catalysts with a Zn–O 4 configuration were prepared to solve the problems of easy loss of active components and carbon accumulation of Zn-based catalysts in the reaction. The characterization results showed that the phosphotungstic acid (HPW) ligands effectively promoted Zn species dispersion, provided more acid sites, mitigated the loss of Zn, and improved the carbon deposition resistance of the catalyst. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation further confirmed that the water molecules preferentially adsorb on the surface of the catalyst to promote the dissociation of water molecules, and the H of dissociation from water molecules and Zn forms the most stable Zn–OH configuration, which is the main active center of the reaction. Meanwhile the –OH dissociated from water molecules is adducted with C 2 H 2 , while H reduces the catalyst, and the original H atoms in the ligand catalyst further participate in the reaction to realize the catalytic cycle. This provides a new idea for the development of green catalysts for acetylene hydration.

Abstract:Vinyl chloride, the monomer of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), is industrially synthesized via acetylene hydrochlorination. Thereby, easy to sublimate but toxic mercury chloride catalysts are widely used. It is imperative to find environmentally friendly non-mercury catalysts to promote the green production of PVC. Low-cost copper-based catalysts are promising candidates. In this study, phosphorus-doped Cu-based catalysts are prepared. It is shown that the type of phosphorus configuration and the distribution on the surface of the carrier can be adjusted by changing the calcination temperature. Among the different phosphorus species, the formed P-C bond plays a key role. The coordination structure formed by the interaction between P-C bonds and atomically dispersed Cu2+ species results in effective and stable active sites. Insights on how P-C bonds activate the substrate may provide ideas for the design and optimization of phosphorus-doped catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination.
Insight into Cu(II) Adsorption on Polyamine Resin in the Presence of HEDP by Tracking the Evolution of Amino Groups and Cu(II)–HEDP Complexes

Abstract:The presence of low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) dramatically influences the species and adsorption behavior of heavy metal ions (HMIs). The effect of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) on the adsorption of Cu(II) on polyamine resin (PAMD) was investigated by tracking the evolution of amino groups on the PAMD surface and species of Cu(II)-HEDP complexes. First, a simplified proton consumption model was developed to quantify the chemical states of the surface amino groups, which were classified into four categories of different contents and acidity coefficients (pK(a)) as 2.78 mmol/g (pK(a1) = 3.00; defined as type A), 4.44 mmol/g (pK(a2) = 6.46; type B), 3.28 mmol/g (pK(a3) = 8.64; type C), and 7.40 mmol/g (pK(a4) = 10.83; type D). Then, based on theoretical calculations and potentiometric titration, the optimum structure of the Cu(II)-HEDP complexes in the bulk solution were determined to be hexacyclic [Cu(II)L](2-), [Cu(II)HL](-), and [Cu(II)H2L](0) with stability constants of 12.64, 7.07, and 3.80, respectively. When B-type amino group has not been deprotonated, the adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) involved coordination between Cu(II)-HEDP complexes and the deprotonated A-type amino group to form ternary complexes of Cu(II)(R-NH2)(2)L rather than electrostatic interaction between Cu(II)-HEDP complexes and protonated amino groups. With increasing deprotonation degree of the B-type amino groups, the complexing affinity of PAMD toward Cu(II) increased, resulting in that the ligand competition between HEDP in the liquid phase and deprotonated B-type amino groups on the surface of PAMD, ultimately achieved ligand substitution to form binary complex Cu(II)(R-NH-CH2-CH2-NH2)(2). This evolution process provides important guidelines for the development of novel chelate adsorbents resistant to interference by LMWOAs. The enhanced adsorption affinity for HMIs by PAMD can be achieved by reducing the heavy metal complex stability with LMWOAs.
Supported ionic liquid-copper catalyst for synergistically catalytic and highly efficient hydration of acetylene

Abstract:At present, heterogeneous mercury-free catalysts are suffering from rapid deactivation caused by reduction or aggregation/growth of copper particle during preparation and reaction. Here, a high-performance and long-lived catalysts with activated carbon supported copper-ionic liquid system (Cu-xIL/AC, x is the molar ratio of IL and Cu) was prepared by wet impregnation method for the hydration of acetylene to acetaldehyde. Over the optimal Cu-1.5IL/AC catalyst, the acetylene conversion of 96.8% and acetaldehyde selectivity of 87.1% could still be obtained at 20 h (T = 240 °C, GHSVC2H2 = 90 h−1 and VH2O/VC2H2 = 1.15). The experimental results indicated that Cu species were embedded in ionic liquid (IL) and the interaction and synergistic effect between metal ions and IL guaranteed high and stable dispersion of active species on the host and suppress the reduction of active Cu specie, which are mainly responsible for the excellent catalytic property. The findings highlight the contribution of ILs in heterogeneous catalytic reaction and supply a promising industrial application of Cu-1.5IL/AC catalyst in acetylene hydration.

Abstract:Reactions of N,N'-bis[o-(diphenylphosphino)benzylidene]ethylenediamine (en-P2) with Cu(ClO4)2 or CuClO4 afford two complexes, [CuII-en-P2(NCMe)](ClO4)2 1 and [CuI-en-P2]ClO4 2, respectively, which have been characterized by several physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods. The copper atom is five, and four-coordinated in the copper complexes 1 and 2, respectively. At room temperature, en-P2 shows photoluminescence at 420 and 560 nm, however, the addition of Cu2+ or Cu+ leads to a decrease on the peak intensities at 420 and 560 nm, respectively. Investigations for magnetic behaviors show that upon cooling from 300 to 2 K, the χMT value of both copper complexes 1 and 2 steadily increased. Additionally, electrochemical investigations reveal that both complexes 1 and 2 have electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution from acetic acid or water, and complex 1 shows a more efficient activity than complex 2.

Abstract:Active sites on ligand-enhanced Cu-based catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination have not been clearly identified yet due to their complex nature and dynamic evolution under working conditions. Herein, we correlate experimental measurements with theoretical simulations to show that the indirect ligand-coordinated sites induced by excess copper chloride are superior. The catalyst experimentally exhibits a unique dual nature that the catalytic activity could be inhibited or boosted by changing the ratio of copper chloride and ligand. By adopting molecular dynamics simulation to obtain the dynamic evolution of active sites, coupled with density functional theory calculations, we show that excess copper chloride molecules spontaneously assemble into chain structures, thus inducing indirect ligand-coordinated sites which together with the electron transfer along the copper chloride chain are crucial for the high catalytic activity. This knowledge provides fundamental insights into the origin of activity in Cu-ligand catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination and the identification of active sites in complex catalytic systems.

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between catalyst structure and performance is essential for the rational design of active sites for high-performance Cu-ligand catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination. Herein, two descriptors are informed by data to screen efficient ligands and predict high-performance Cu-ligand catalysts: (1) the reduction potential of Cu 2+ -Cu + and catalytic performance were correlated in a volcano-like manner; (2) the C≡C bond length of C 2 H 2 and catalytic performance were linearly related within the Cu 2+ -Cu + reduction limit. By using the two descriptors, the MPPO (3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-phospholene 1-oxide) ligand was successfully identified and developed into an effective Cu-MPPO catalyst. The conversion of C 2 H 2 of 96.11 % and the selectivity of VCM of 99 % were obtained under the conditions of 180 h −1 , 180 °C, and V HCl : V C2H2 = 1.2. The C 2 H 2 conversion was still above 90 % after running for more than 600 h at 50 h −1 . The excellent activity and exceptional stability of the Cu-MPPO catalyst validate the developed model for optimal ligand selection. Detailed structural characterization and density function theory calculations of the designed catalysts were performed to reveal the relationship between catalyst structure and activity. The results indicated that the addition of MPPO altered the local microenvironment of Cu. The simultaneous increased electron density around Cu and Cl resulted in strengthened HCl adsorption and weakened acetylene adsorption, inhibiting the generation of carbon deposition. In addition, MPPO contributed to suppressing the reduction of Cu species, thus stabilizing the active species. This research provides valuable insights and reference strategies for screening efficient ligands in Cu-ligand catalysts.

Abstract:A new caffeic acid derivative ((E)-3-(2,3-dihydrobenzo[b][1,4]dioxin-6-yl)acrylic acid, HL1)) is synthesized from caffeic acid, followed by the preparation of a Cu(II) complex, [Cu2(L1)4DMSO2]·2DMSO. The structure is determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, and the urease inhibitory activity of the complex is studied. The results show that IC50 of the complex is 0.56 μmol/L, which is superior to positive control acetohydroxamic acid (AHA, IC50 was 10.95 μmol/l), i.e., the complex has strong inhibitory activity towards urease.
Improvement of Selectivity in Acetylene Hydrogenation with Comparable Activity over Ordered PdCu Catalysts Induced by Post-treatment

Abstract:In this work, a simple post-treatment has been carried out on a solid palladium–copper alloy to enhance the ethylene selectivity without any loss of activity. In all catalysts, PdCu/C catalysts post-treated at 375 °C exhibit improved ethylene selectivity (86%) compared to the solid PdCu/C catalysts (61%) at 100% acetylene conversion with comparable catalytic activity. During the post-treatment, the average size of PdCu nanoparticles is maintained at 6.6–6.8 nm, and no obvious segregation is observed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) results display that Pd is in a metallic state for all PdCu catalysts before and after post-treatment. Moreover, the EXAFS fitting results show that the Pd–Pd bond is gradually replaced by the Pd–Cu bond. The good separation of Pd atoms by Cu is also proven by XRD characterization, which shows that a body-centered cubic PdCu structure with uniform distribution of Pd and Cu in a unit cell forms under 375 °C post-treatment. The rearrangement of Pd and Cu atoms has a limited impact on the surface Pd dispersion, avoiding the activity loss due to the decrease in Pd sites. Abstract:Atomically dispersed metal catalysts (ADMCs), which offer maximized atom-use efficiency and catalytic performance enhancements for many catalytic systems, have received increasing attention in the catalysis field. Additionally, ADMCs with well-defined architectures are promising for providing valuable information to derive structure–performance relationships. Here, we immobilized Cu1 on a defective nanodiamond-graphene (ND@G) and N-doped nanodiamond-graphene (ND@NG). By changing the coordination environments (Cu–C or Cu–N), the electronic state of Cu ADMCs can be tailored. The highly oxidized Cu atoms in Cu–N AMDCs present distinctively different acetylene hydrogenation activity compared to that in Cu–C AMDCs (i.e., with high conversion (100%), high selectivity (93%), and good stability (more than for 100 h)). Density functional theory and H2–D2 exchange experiments reveal that Cu–C bond anchoring favors H2 dissociative adsorption, which is a rate-limiting step. In addition, the facile desorption of the target product C2H4 over Cu–C ADMCs ensures the outstanding activity and selectivity of the catalyst. This work thus helps to bring perspectives for linking activity and structures of ADMCs and designing active ADMCs for hydrogenation applications.

Abstract:Copper‐based activated‐carbon (AC)‐supported catalysts were synthesized by a facile ammonia evaporation–impregnation method. Unlike the conventional Cu/SiO2 catalyst, which showed highly catalytic selectivity towards ethylene glycol (EG) or EtOH, Cu/AC catalysts display unique selectivity to methyl glycolate (MG). The catalytic performance relies on the high content of surface Cu+ species and the relatively large copper particles with moderate hydrogenation activity.

Abstract:The structure and catalytic properties of Pd catalyst supported on the outer surface or inner surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been investigated by using various experimental techniques combined with acetylene selective hydrogenation tests. It has been shown that Pd/CNTs-out catalyst exhibits higher ethylene selectivity than Pd/CNTs-in catalyst for acetylene selective hydrogenation. The electron interaction between CNTs support and palladium particles is responsible for higher ethylene selectivity over Pd/CNTs-out catalyst. Impact of Pd single-site coordination structure on catalytic performance for semihydrogenation of acetylene

Abstract:Semihydrogenation of trace acetylene in an ethylene gas stream is a vital step for the industrial production of polyethylene, in which Pd single-site catalysts (SSCs) have great potential. Herein, two Pd SSCs with different coordination structures are prepared on hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages (hNCNC) by regulating the nitrogen species with or without using dicyandiamide. With using dicyandiamide, the obtained Pd 1 -N dicy /hNCNC SSC features the coordinated Pd by two pyridinic N and two pyrrolic N (PdN 2 py N 2 pr ). Without using dicyandiamide, the obtained Pd 1 /hNCNC SSC features the coordinated Pd by pyridinic N and C (PdN x py C 4− x , x = 1–4). The former exhibits an 18-fold increase in catalytic activity compared to the latter. Theoretical results reveal the abundant unoccupied orbital states above the Fermi level of PdN 2 py N 2 pr moiety, which can facilitate the activation of substrate molecules and dynamics of acetylene hydrogenation as supported by the combined theoretical and experimental results. In addition, the PdN 2 py N 2 pr moiety presents a favorable desorption of ethylene. Consequently, the Pd 1 -N dicy /hNCNC SSC exhibits high C 2 H 2 conversion (99%) and C 2 H 4 selectivity (87%) at 160 °C. This study demonstrates the impact of Pd single-site coordination structure on catalytic performance, which is significant for the rational design of advanced Pd SSCs on carbon-based supports.

Abstract:Transition metal complexes, particularly copper hydrides, play an important role in various catalytic processes and molecular inorganic chemistry. This study employs synchrotron hard X‐ray spectroscopy to gain insights into the geometric and electronic properties of copper hydrides as potential catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation. The potential of high energy resolution X‐ray absorption near‐edge structure (HERFD‐XANES) and valence‐to‐core X‐ray emission (VtC‐XES) is demonstrated with measurement on Stryker's reagent (Cu6H6) and [Cu3(μ3‐H)(dpmppe)2](PF6)2 (Cu3H), alongside a non‐hydride copper compound (Cu‐I). The XANES analysis reveals that coordination geometries strongly influence the spectra, providing only indirect details about hydride coordination. The VtC‐XES analysis exhibits a distinct signal around 8975 eV, offering a diagnostic tool to identify hydride ligands. Theoretical calculations support and extend these findings by comparing hydride‐containing complexes with their hydride‐free counterparts.

Abstract:The complexation of palladium with bidentate phosphine ligand has significant effects on the activity of the catalyst for methoxycarbonylation of ethene. Herein, the influence of the ratio of components, kind and sequence of additives, complexation temperature and time on the catalytic performance were studied, then probable mechanism was proposed, and further kinetic studies were carried out under the optimized conditions. Compared to add Methanesulfonic acid (MSA) after complexation, the addition of an appropriate dose of MSA before complexation rather than after complexation could effectively improve the activity of the catalyst, while the addition of Methyl Propionate (MeP) would reduce the activity of the catalyst. It was worth noting that the weak absorption of [Pd-H]+ + in 1943 cm-1 was captured in the complex by in situ FT-IR.
