Abstract:Solid-state hydrogen storage provides high volumetric energy density and has the potential to replace commercial storage techniques. Low gravimetric storage and elevated desorption temperature are the major issues of primarily used metal and complex hydrides. Silicon, a widely available and versatile semiconductor material, is a major research focus. The strong affinity of hydrogen towards Si makes it suitable for solid-state hydrogen storage. In addition to the modified surface and thermodynamic properties, Si-derived nanostructures provide enhanced hydrogen interaction properties. Electrochemical anodization of bulk Si results in the fabrication of Porous Si, possessing a large surface area, pore volume, and uniform pore size distribution. The hydrogen storage capacity in PS is ∼665 μmol/g (0.101 wt%) at 120 °C and 20 bar charging pressure. The kinetic models indicate that the storage is in a surface-controlled diffusion stage (α-phase) at 20 bar, with the modified surface providing a large active space for storage at elevated pressure. PS exhibits a thermal decomposition energy requirement of ∼110 kJ/mol. Thus, fundamental investigations on mesoporous materials for hydrogen adsorption may pave the way for high-density reversible hydrogen storage.
