Abstract:Patients with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and their family caregivers, hereafter "caregivers," experience significant changes to their personal and professional lives after implantation. 1,2 For most programs, caregiving is required for at least 3 months post implantation and often continues beyond the postoperative period for the remainder of the patient's life. 3 Ongoing assistance is needed with tasks such as dressing changes, medications, transportation, and device alarms, 1,4 although the intensity of care can vary from minimal to intense, depending on the patient's recovery and comorbidities. 3 Adjusting to life post implantation can be difficult as caregivers must manage existing responsibilities alongside emotional and practical challenges introduced by the LVAD. 1,4
