Abstract:When world economy today is on the way of integration and regional bloc, China and ASEAN, having ridded themselves of the cold war, are paying more attention to their geographical relations and bilateral business. A friendly relationship in the past, mutual economic benefits, the end of the cold war and the quick economic development of East Asia have offered favorable conditions and opportunities to both sides, but there still exist obstacles in their cooperation. Abstract:Since “the Belt and Road” initiative was proposed ten years ago, ASEAN has always been a priority region. China and Southeast Asian countries, adhering to the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits, have made significant achievements in political consultation, economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, environmental protection, and other aspects. In the new international political and economic situation, both sides are facing challenges from factors such as intervention from foreign powers, political uncertainty within ASEAN countries, competition for economic development space, and misunderstanding and concerns about China’s rise. Nevertheless, China and ASEAN are geographically connected by mountains and rivers, historically by humanities. With the RCEP implemented and the RMB regionalized in ASEAN, cooperation between China and ASEAN in emerging fields such as the digital commerce and green energy will see more benefits. In order to better promote China ASEAN cooperation, China should maintain the regional center status of ASEAN, solidly promote bilateral trade and enterprise investment, through cultural exchanges and international public opinion promotion, tell China’s story well, win the hearts of ASEAN people, and enhance trust between each other.

Abstract:<span>Since the establishment of China-ASEAN strategic partnership, and the acceleration of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) building, China-ASEAN economic cooperation relationship has entered a new era. In the building of the "Belt and Road Initiative" (BRI), ASEAN has a pivotal position and role, and ASEAN countries are key cooperation partners. In order to achieve the building goals of the BRI and AEC, China not only attaches great importance to the cooperative relationship with ASEAN, establishing and upgrading the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, advocating the establishment of a China-ASEAN community with a shared future, and agrees that ASEAN maintaining its leadership role in East Asia regional cooperation. At the same time, China and ASEAN are gradually implementing the BRI to dock with the ASEAN Community Blueprint and the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity, and speeding up cooperation in trade, investment, and production capacity for win-win cooperation. However, China-ASEAN economic cooperation also faces challenges such as trade and investment competition, trade surplus, competition for dominance in economic cooperation, and the "China Threat" theory. In this regard, China and ASEAN need to coordinate the relationship among various cooperation mechanisms, optimize the structure of bilateral economic cooperation, implement a competitive negative list system, adjust the division of labor to achieve complementary advantages, so as to lay a solid foundation for building a China-ASEAN community with a shared future.</span>

Abstract:China-ASEAN are the two huge markets in trade world, they can bring out greater dynamism from within their economies and contribute to regional economic development. This study explores the present situation on the trade between the Central region of China and ASEAN through empirical assessment and try to find the potential effects and trade flows between them. Firstly, we analysis the trade integration index, HM index, explicit comparative advantage index, and trade complementarity index. Finally, we use the gravity model of international trade and data on 2006–2018. The bilateral trade relations between the central region and ASEAN are getting closer, but the central region has not yet become the major trade area of ASEAN countries in the Chinese market. The bilateral economic development level plays a positive role in promoting the export trade between the Central region and ASEAN, while the bilateral distance plays a negative role in difficulty. The empirical results show that trade potential between the Central region and Indonesia and the Philippines is huge, and there is still opportunity for the development of the trade potential with Thailand. The trade prospective with Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam is limited, and new approaches need to be developed to achieve further trade cooperation.

Abstract:2023 is the tenth year since the One Belt One Road initiative was proposed, and it is also Chinas opening up after three years of the Covid-19 epidemic. Against the backdrop of the Russo-Ukraine War and global de-dollarization, ASEAN has begun to gradually reduce its dependence on the US dollar. This research focuses on the challenges and opportunities brought by this situation to the implementation of One Belt One Road in ASEAN. This paper first analyzes the macroeconomic advantages of Chinas strengthening of cooperation and investment with ASEAN, and then, based on the difference in difference model, it is proved that Chinas direct investment in ASEAN countries does not trigger a debt trap. Finally, China should increase cooperation with ASEAN in digital technology, green technology, artificial intelligence, and blockchain. At the same time, when China relies on the development of ASEAN to promote the globalization of the RMB, it needs to increase its convertibility and availability.

Abstract:The concept of sustainable development as a consensus is being recognized and practiced by the international community, and how to promote China–ASEAN trade relations and stable and sustainable economic development is an important guarantee for the coordinated economic development of the region. This paper studies the trade relationship between China and the ten ASEAN countries by using the theory of ecological population evolution and determines the ecological trade relationship between China and the ten ASEAN countries by establishing the Lotka–Volterra model of the evolution of two populations—the relationship of competition, the relationship of partial benefit, and the relationship of mutually beneficial symbiosis—so as to analyze the degree of trade friction between the two sides and propose corresponding strategies for coordinated development of the regional economy. According to the results of the population evolution competition model, there is a competitive relationship between China, Brunei, and Vietnam, which may cause trade friction. China has a trade-biased relationship with Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Singapore, which is less likely to cause trade friction. China's trade with Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand is mutually beneficial. The possibility of trade friction is low, and the trade relationship between China and ASEAN as a whole is also mutually beneficial. On this basis, in order to further enhance the trade relations between PRC and the ten ASEAN countries and promote the coordinated development of the regional economy, this paper puts forward the policy suggestions of improving infrastructure, strengthening independent innovation, seeking cooperation areas, and actively investing in foreign direct investment.

Abstract:Subject ASEAN-China economic cooperation. Significance Trade between China and the ASEAN states has grown fast over the last few years, even amid sluggish growth of global trade overall. Investment in ASEAN countries is already a key part of the globalisation strategies of many Chinese companies. The ASEAN-China Free Trade Area will probably increase its share of global trade as trade within it outpaces that within other major economic blocs, such as the EU and North America. Impacts Investment in ASEAN countries will help Chinese firms reduce production costs, tap local markets and avoid US tariffs. Chinese investment will help upgrade the infrastructure and domestic industrial sectors of ASEAN’s poorer economies. Competition between China and ASEAN countries will increase as the latter’s own manufacturing sectors develop.

Abstract:The China-ASEAN trade relationship is multidimensional. The trade situation between China and Vietnam is not similar to that of China and the ASEAN5, as the former records trade surpluses with Vietnam in agriculture and manufactures. Bilaterally, China’s exports are also more homogeneously distributed relative to Vietnam, and comprise higher value-added intermediates. Despite the asymmetry in terms of economic capacity between China and Vietnam, it is not one-sided nor is it all downside, as there is a high level of economic interdependence between the two. The empirical results from the stochastic frontier analysis indicate that Vietnam’s trade efficiency with China is somewhat comparable with the levels achieved by the other ASEAN members in trade with China. Importantly, Vietnam’s exports of agriculture products to China are operating closer to its potential level than China’s exports to Vietnam. Overall, there remains scope for an improved efficiency of two-way bilateral exports in the China-Vietnam partnership. It is therefore seemingly untrue to assume that only the larger side could get more from this relationship.
Evaluation of China-ASEAN trade status and trade potential: An empirical study based on a gravity model

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study was to identify factors influencing the development of China-ASEAN trade- from the total economic volume of both sides, distance, the population size of ASEAN countries, the construction of a free trade area, and the signing of the Belt and Road initiative, resource endowment per capita, the exchange rate between RMB and ASEAN countries, and the land area of ASEAN countries-to develop a conceptual framework for China-ASEAN trade potential. Study design: This study uses panel data from 2001 to 2021 that is evenly distributed among 10 ASEAN countries to serve as the dataset. Firstly, the unit roots are checked and the cointegration relationships are examined, focusing on the heterogeneity test. Based on the classical trade gravity model, the innovative trade gravity model with key influencing factors is constructed. On the basis of the classical trade gravity model, an innovative trade gravity model of key influencing factors is constructed. The trade potential model is used to calculate the direct trade potential coefficient between China and ASEAN countries, which points out the direction for the sustainability of bilateral trade. Results: This study finds that among the factors affecting China-ASEAN bilateral trade, the total economic output of both sides, distance, population size of ASEAN countries, the construction of the FTA, and the signing of the Belt and Road Initiative all have a positive impact on bilateral trade. Three influencing factors, namely per capita resource endowment, exchange rate between RMB and ASEAN countries, and the size of ASEAN countries, have a negative impact on bilateral trade, but to a lesser extent. The trade potential between China and Vietnam falls into the category of potential re-modelling, indicating that both sides are currently utilizing their trade potential to the greatest extent possible, that trade growth space is limited, and that new trade opportunities must be discovered. The trade potential index between China and nine ASEAN countries, excluding Vietnam, is in the potential-exploiting category, indicating that the potential has not been fully utilized by both sides and that there is still room for growth in the scale of trade between the two countries. Conclusion: With the shift of the world's economic center of gravity in the direction of Asia following COVID-19, China and ASEAN countries should seize the opportunity to strengthen their comprehensive strength and economic aggregates and further develop China's constructive role in the regional organization. The signing of the Belt and Road Initiative and the construction of a free trade zone has had a positive effect on the development of bilateral trade. Propose that: positive trade factors should continue to be strengthened, trade barriers should be removed, and new dynamics of bilateral trade growth should be enhanced.

Abstract:At present, China’s external circulation is facing opportunities such as the diversification of foreign trade and investment and the opening of a multi-level development pattern with the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. At the same time, challenges brought about by the US Indo-Pacific Economic Framework and the economic trends of Japan and ASEAN are also rising. Therefore, in the face of an increasingly complex international environment and various challenges, China must find new approaches to expand the effective means of China’s external circulation. To accomplish this, China should continue to adjust its relationship with the US and keep the scale of China–US trade relatively stable. In addition, China should actively expand the space for the development of foreign trade.

Abstract:China has prospered and turned into a world superpower due to the rapid economic growth in the Old Silk Road era. President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China, being aware of this fact, has the desire to revitalize the Silk Road and, thus, on his official visit to Kazakhstan in September 2014, declared the commencement of the “Belt and Road Initiative,” or “One Belt One Road (OBOR)” strategies aiming to develop bilateral and multilateral economy. Under the concept of this New Silk Road, or OBOR, China has the intention to connect and develop the infrastructure leading to central Asia and Europe. This will also cover the Southeast Asia region. Thailand, having much better geopolitical and geo-economic conditions than other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries, has been foreseen to be the hub that will link the countries both inside and outside the ASEAN region. The objective of this paper is to investigate and discuss the challenges and opportunities for Thailand under China’s OBOR strategy framework. It can obviously be viewed that China’s OBOR conforms to Thailand’s international trade strategy as being the center of connectivity with the countries both inside and outside ASEAN. And this will result in the long-lasting growth of the economy of Thailand. China’s OBOR strategies, especially the promotion of OBOR through the Southeast Asia region, will encourage cooperation between China and ASEAN in various aspects, for example, transportation, trade, investment, energy, and regional cooperation, which will directly and indirectly benefit ASEAN nations including Thailand, whose geo-economic advantage makes it suitable to be the center of the other ASEAN countries.

Abstract:This article examines the strategic and diplomatic aspects of China’s decision to form a Free Trade Area (FTA) with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in November 2001. An FTA represents one significant step forward in China’s economic diplomacy toward ASEAN, considering China’s involvement in other venues of regional economic affairs. An in-depth reading of the policy rationale contained in the Joint ASEAN-China Expert Study Group’s report shows that the FTA decision resulted from a largely diplomatic-political imperative on the part of China. Nonetheless, movement toward an FTA came about after studious Chinese efforts over a decade to win over ASEAN’s trust. In proposing the FTA, China pursues two strategic goals: development of its southwestern provinces, and competition with Japan in terms of demonstrating leadership in regional economic affairs.

China'Export Situation Problems and Countermeasures of Electromechanical Products to ASEAN

Abstract:China's trade with ASEAN exports of electromechanical products has well developed since China and ASEAN signed the "China-ASEAN Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Cooperation" in 2002. Setting up CAFTA in 2010 brings a new opportunity to China to export its electromechanical products to ASEAN. ASEAN has become China's fourth largest export market of electromechanical products with steadily expanding exports, however, the trade of Chinese exports to ASEAN is restricted due to the lack of core technology, the homogenization of the export products and concentrated export market. Therefore, analyzing current situation and problems of China-ASEAN trade of electromechanical products' export, adjusting the structure of export products, developing multiple markets and improving the market China's export of electromechanical products in ASEAN will to promote the development of China's export of electromechanical products to ASEAN.

Abstract:The introduction of a free trade area between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China (ACFTA) in 2012 brought China to a leading economic position in Southeast Asia (this was manifested in a significant, almost 2.2-fold, increase in the volume of trade) and turned it into a driving force of ASEAN’s economic prosperity. However, this increased economic interdependence creates challenges for both China and ASEAN: on the one hand, China seeks to make the transition from a high-income country to sustainable economic development in the ASEAN region, and on the other hand, ASEAN has concerns about excessive economic dependence on China. This situation requires a balance to be struck to avoid repeating the historical patterns seen in Japan in the 1960s and 1980s. This article examines the investment, trade and geopolitical relations between China and ASEAN in a historical retrospective of 2010-2022, assesses their economic dependence and the mechanisms of political-economic relations, identifies the factors that caused China’s rapid economic breakthrough, and outlines directions for overcoming the most modern challenges that have place in the context of this relationship through formulation of suggested frameworks. The article considers 2 research questions, for the solution of which the G/T (Grounded Theory) approach was used and a qualitative analysis of the 12 most relevant sources was carried out (limitation of their number – according to the concept of theoretical saturation), selected primarily through online databases, websites, international organizations’ data, analytical reviews, and scientific papers. RQ1: Identify the root causes of the problems faced by ASEAN middle-income countries in their engagement with China. The article identifies the following 3 main reasons through the empirical review analysis: 1) dependence of middle-income ASEAN countries on financial assistance, especially from China; 2) a noticeable decrease in unity in the ASEAN region; 3) China’s lack of recommendations on the advisory policy of economic development in the ASEAN countries. RQ2: development of recommendations for middle-income ASEAN countries to increase their ability to pave independent paths to sustainable economic development and reduce their economic dependence on China, taking into account the review of the balance of power in political relations with the United States and China. Using the qualitative analysis tool ATLAS.ti (version 24) for the G/T approach, it was concluded that to overcome the syndromes of lower-middle-income trap (LMIT) and higher-middle-income trap (HMIT), ASEAN economies should implement the following spontaneous strategies: infrastructure development, improvement of basic education and promotion of science and technology. In addition, it is important to raise awareness of political tensions between China and the US, apply the techniques of thoughtful diplomacy, fine-tuned policy formulation, and shared vision to establish a diplomatic balance between China, the US, and Japan in the context of geopolitical risk management.

Abstract:The implementation of a free trade area between China and ASEAN has enhanced economic links between them. In spite of this, China's Southeast Asian neighbours still have strong strategic misgivings about the country's growth in wealth and power. China's energy rise, in the form of surging demands and an expanding presence, has added a new ingredient in Sino-Southeast Asian relations. From the combined perspectives of both economic mercantilism and economic liberalism, this article analyses the implications of China's energy rise on its Southeast Asian neighbours, and the doubts and debates that surround them. Such impacts arguably are mixed, and the more important aspect of such impacts arises not from China's surging demand per se, but rather from the policies it created to deal with it.
