Abstract:The strange quark contributions to the electromagnetic form factors of the proton are ideal quantities to study the role of hidden flavor in the properties of the proton. This has motivated intense experimental measurements of these form factors. A major remaining source of systematic uncertainty in these determinations is the assumption that charge symmetry violation (CSV) is negligible. We use recent theoretical determinations of the CSV form factors and reanalyse the available parity-violating electron scattering data, up to $Q^2$ $\sim$ 1 GeV$^2$. Our analysis considers systematic expansions of the strangeness electric and magnetic form factors of the proton. The results provide an update to the determination of strangeness over a range of $Q^2$ where, under certain assumptions about the effective axial form factor, an emergence of non-zero strangeness is revealed in the vicinity of $Q^2$ $\sim$ 0.6 GeV$^2$. Given the recent theoretical calculations, it is found that the current limits on CSV do not have a significant impact on the interpretation of the measurements and hence suggests an opportunity for a next generation of parity-violating measurements to more precisely map the distribution of strange quarks.

Abstract:Experimental tests of QCD through its predictions for the strange-quark content of the proton have been drastically restricted by our lack of knowledge of the violation of charge symmetry (CSV). We find unexpectedly tiny CSV in the proton's electromagnetic form factors by performing the first extraction of these quantities based on an analysis of lattice QCD data. The resulting values are an order of magnitude smaller than current bounds on proton strangeness from parity violating electron-proton scattering experiments. This result paves the way for a new generation of experimental measurements of the proton's strange form factors to challenge the predictions of QCD.

Abstract:The measurement of parity violation in the helicity dependence of electron-nucleon scattering provides unique information about the basic quark structure of the nucleons. In this review, the general formalism of parity-violating electron scattering is presented, with emphasis on elastic electron-nucleon scattering. The physics issues addressed by such experiments is discussed, and the major goals of the presently envisioned experimental program are identified. %General aspects of the experimental technique are reviewed and A summary of results from a recent series of experiments is presented and the future prospects of this program are also discussed.

SU(3)-symmetry Breaking Effects and Mass Splitting in Scalar and Pseudoscalar D Mesons from QCD Sum Rules

Abstract:Motivated by the similar mass splitting in light-light and heavy-light J(P) = 0(-) and J(P) = 0(+) mesons, the SU(3)-symmetry breaking effects splitting the masses in the 0(-) and 0(+) channels of the D meson are analyzed in the framework of QCD sum rules with an underlying c (q) over bar structure. We take into account operator mixing to obtain an infrared stable operator-product expansion method including complete nonperturbative and perturbative O(m(q)) corrections to the correlation function. With the same threshold for both channels, the mass splitting arising from the sum rules has the same behavior as the observed spectrum. In particular, we obtain m(Ds) - m(Dd) similar to 35 MeV in the 0(-) channel and m(Dd) - m(Ds) similar to 12 MeV in the 0(+) channel at a renormalization scale mu = 1 GeV. The splitting can be attributed to the different roles of mass effects and the parity-dependent "force" induced from nonperturbative QCD vacuum. Further analysis shows that due to this parity-dependent force it is natural that the mass gap of the two states in the 0(-) channel is larger than the 0(+) channel. When we increase the renormalization scale to mu = 1: 3 GeV the splitting remains unchanged which demonstrates a correct scale invariance. Combined with heavy quark effective theory, generalizations to other channels of charmed mesons and b-systems are briefly discussed.
Challenges in the extraction of physics beyond the Standard Model from electron scattering

Abstract:Precise measurements of electron and positron scattering, including parity violation, offer great promise in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. In this context it is crucial to understand the corrections which might arise from charge symmetry violation, as well as the less well known strange and charm quark distributions. Our analysis, using state of the art parton distributions, suggests that these contributions lead to corrections in the extraction of the weak couplings $g^{eq}_{AV}$ and $g^{eq}_{VA}$ of the order $(1-2)\%$, while they are as large as $4\%$ for $g^{eq}_{AA}$, at a typical scale of $Q^2 = 10\ {\rm GeV}^2$. These results underline the importance of carrying out high precision measurements, which will not only provide information on physics beyond the Standard Model but also reduce the current uncertainties on our knowledge of the strange and charm quark distributions in the proton.

Impact of Charge Symmetry Breaking on Gluon and Sea Quark Distributions in the Pion and Kaon

Abstract:In this exploratory study, I present, for the first time, the implications of the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) that arise from the $u$ and $d$ quark mass differences on gluon and sea quark distribution functions of the pion and kaon in the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasino (NJL) model, which is a quark-level chiral effective theory of QCD, with the help of the proper-time regularization scheme to simulate color confinement of QCD. From the analysis, one finds that the charge symmetry (CS) gluon distribution for the pion has a good agreement with the prediction results obtained from the recent lattice QCD simulation and JAM global fit QCD analysis at a higher scale of $Q^2 =$ 5 GeV$^2$. The size of the CSB effects on gluon and sea quark distributions for the pion with the realistic ratios of $m_u/m_d = 0.5$ at $Q^2 =$ 5 GeV$^2$ are respectively estimated by 1.3\% and 2.0\% at $x \simeq 1$ in comparison with those for $m_u/m_d = 1.0$, while those for the kaon are approximately about 0.3\% and 0.5\% at $ x \simeq 1$, respectively. A remarkable result is found that the CSB effects on gluon distribution for the kaon are smaller than that for the pion, which has a similar prediction result as that for the CS case.

Charge symmetry violation in the doubly charmed cascade masses

Abstract:We investigate the electromagnetic contribution to the charge symmetry breaking in the $\Xi_{cc}$ baryon masses using a subtracted dispersion relation based on the Cottingham formula, following the formalism developed in an analysis of the octet baryon mass differences. In the absence of experimental information on the structure of charmed baryons, we use parameters for the electromagnetic structure of the $\Xi_{cc}$ and the difference in its charge states obtained from lattice QCD and estimates of SU(4) symmetry breaking. We report a conservative estimate for the mass splitting of the doubly charmed cascades to be 8 $\pm$ 9 MeV. While a smaller isospin splitting is compatible with this result, surprisingly it does not preclude the large splitting reported by the SELEX Collaboration. We identify those quantities which could be determined from lattice QCD and which would reduce the quoted theoretical uncertainty.

Abstract:We discuss the theoretical and experimental situations for charge symmetry violation (CSV) effects in the elastic scattering of pi+ and pi- on deuterium (D) and 3He/3H. Accurate comparison of data for both types of targets provides evidence for the presence of CSV effects. While there are indications of a CSV effect in deuterium, it is much more pronounced in the case of 3He/3H. We provide a description of the CSV effect on the deuteron in terms of single- and double- scattering amplitudes. The Delta-mass splitting is taken into account. Theoretical predictions are compared with existing experimental data for pi-d scattering; a future article will speak to the pi-three nucleon case.

Abstract:The quark-loop contribution to the rho(o)-omega mixing self-energy is calculated within a QCD-based model field theory in which the mesons are composite qBARq bound states and the dressed quark propagator, obtained from a model Dyson-Schwinger equation, is confining. In contrast to previous studies, the strength and range of the meson-qBARq vertex functions are produced within the model, and the off-mass-shell mixing behaviour includes the contribution from the diagonal meson self-energies. Although the mass-shell mixing is very sensitive to the small isovector component of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, the spacelike mixing still generates an insignificant charge symmetry breaking nuclear force.

Abstract:A remarkably successful program of parity-violating electron scattering experiments is providing new insight into the structure of the nucleon. Measurement of the vector form factors enables a definitive study of potential strange quark-antiquark contributions to the electromagnetic structure such as the magnetic moment and charge distribution. Recent experimental results have already indicated that effects of strangeness are much smaller than theoretically expected. In addition, the neutral axial form factor appears to display substantial corrections as one might expect from an anapole effect.

Abstract:The parity violating longitudinal asymmetry ${\cal A}$ is calculated for quasielastic electron scattering. We use a variety of relativistic mean field models for the response of nuclear matter and $^{12}$C at a momentum transfer of q=550 MeV/c. Relativistic effects from a reduced nucleon mass, RPA correlations and vacuum polarization can all change ${\cal A}$ by a relatively large amount. These large nuclear structure corrections could make it impossible to extract strange quark matrix elements or radiative corrections to weak axial currents.

Abstract:An approach is proposed to link the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) nuclear interaction and the low-energy constants in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) by matching the CSB effect in nuclear matter. The resulting CSB interaction is applied to study the Okamoto-Nolen-Schiffer anomaly, still lacking a satisfactory microscopic understanding, on the energy differences of mirror nuclei by taking F17−O17, O15−N15, Sc41−Ca41 , and Ca39−K39 as typical examples. Effect Due to Charge Symmetry Violation on the Paschos-Wolfenstein Relation

Abstract:The modification of the Paschos-Wolfenstein relation is investigated when the charge symmetry violations of valence and sea quark distributions in the nucleon are taken into account. We also study qualitatively the impact of charge symmetry violation (CSV) effect on the extraction of sin(2)theta(w) from deep-inelastic neutrino- and antineutrino-nuclei scattering within the light-cone meson-baryon fluctuation model. We find that the effect of CSV is too small to give a sizable contribution to the NuTeV result with various choices of mass difference inputs, which is consistence with the prediction that the strange-antistrange asymmetry can account for largely the NuTeV deviation in this model. It is noticeable that the effect of CSV might contribute to the NuTeV deviation when the larger difference between the internal momentum scales, alpha(p) of the proton and alpha(n) of the neutron, is considered.

Abstract:We study the impact of nuclear structure uncertainties on a measurement of the weak charge of $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ at the future MESA facility in Mainz. Information from a large variety of nuclear models, accurately calibrated to the ground-state properties of selected nuclei, suggest that a $0.3$% precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry at forward angles will not be compromised by nuclear structure effects, thereby allowing a world-leading determination of the weak charge of $^{12}\mathrm{C}$. Furthermore, we show that a combination of measurements of the parity-violating asymmetry at forward and backward angles for the same electron beam energy can be used to extract information on the nuclear weak charge distribution. We conclude that a $0.34$% precision on the weak radius of $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ may be achieved by performing a $3$% precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry at backward angles.

Abstract:The forward--backward asymmetry in n p --> d pi^0, which must be zero in the center-of-mass system if charge symmetry is respected, has been measured to be [17.2 +/- 8 (stat) +/- 5.5 (sys)] * 10^{-4}, at an incident neutron energy of 279.5 MeV. This charge symmetry breaking observable was extracted by fitting the data with GEANT-based simulations and is compared to recent chiral effective field theory calculations, with implications regarding the value of the u d quark mass difference.
An Overview of the Searches for the Violation of the Charge-Parity Symmetry in the Leptonic Sector

Abstract:The existence of a violation of the Charge-Parity (CP) symmetry in the laws of physics is one of the cornerstone conditions for the generation of a matter–antimatter imbalance necessary to the creation of a matter-dominated universe. The first experimental evidence of the fact that this symmetry is broken in nature was obtained in 1964 in the observations of the decays of neutral kaon mesons. The magnitude of CP violation in the quark sector was measured with an increasing precision exploring also decays of other mesons. However, CP violation in the quark sector alone is not sufficient to explain the formation of matter-dominated universe, and additional sources are required. One such potential source is the lepton sector, where the CP violation could be observed by studying neutrino oscillations with neutrino beams generated by particle accelerators. This article reviews the present efforts in this direction. The results obtained in the ongoing experiments, T2K in Japan and NOvA in USA, are discussed. Additionally, the search for leptonic CP violation is one of the key goals in the programs of future experiments, DUNE in USA and Hyper-Kamiokande in Japan. These experiments and their prospects for its discovery are also presented.

Flavor-diagonal CP violation: the electric dipole moment

Abstract:The observed baryon asymmetry in the universe cannot be reconciled with the current form of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. The Standard Model breaks charge conjugation parity (CP) symmetry, but not in a sufficient amount to explain the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. Historically one of the first systems to be studied in the search of symmetry breaking within the Standard Model is the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron. The contribution to the neutron EDM coming from the SM is several order of magnitudes smaller than the current experimental bound, thus providing a unique, background-free window for potential discovery of physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM). The strong CP-violating θ term can also contribute to the neutron EDM, as can all the CP-violating effective operators describing, at energies below the electro-weak scale, the contributions from BSM. To constrain all these contributions to the neutron EDM we need to precisely determine the hadronic matrix elements of the corresponding renormalized operators. After a brief introduction on baryon asymmetry and baryogenesis, I summarize the current stuatus for experiments in search of a neutron EDM. I then describe in more details the different CP-violating sources, and some results in Chiral Perturbation Theory precede a discussion on the current status of Lattice QCD calculations. I will in particular focus on the 2 main challenges for these type of calculations: the signal-to-noise ratio and the renormalization. I will discuss several improvement techniques trying to improve these two aspects of the calculation and I will conclude with an optimistic view into the future.

Abstract:We discuss the experimental and theoretical status of charge-symmetry violation (CSV) in the elastic scattering of pi+ and pi- on 3H and 3He. Analysis of the experimental data for the ratios r1, r2, and R at Tpi = 142, 180, 220, and 256 MeV provides evidence for the presence of CSV. We describe pion scattering from the three-nucleon system in terms of single- and double-scattering amplitudes. External and internal Coulomb interactions as well as the Delta-mass splitting are taken into account as sources of CSV. Reasonable agreement between our theoretical calculations and the experimental data is obtained for Tpi = 180, 220, and 256 MeV. For these energies, it is found that the Delta-mass splitting and the internal Coulomb interaction are the most important contributions for CSV in the three-nucleon system. The CSV effects are rather sensitive to the choice of pion-nuclear scattering mechanisms, but at the same time, our theoretical predictions are much less sensitive to the choice of the nuclear wave function. It is found, however, that data for r2 and R at Tpi = 142 MeV do not agree with the predictions of our model, which may indicate that there are additional mechanisms for CSV which are important only at lower energies.

Abstract:Background: Parity-violating electron scattering provides a model-independent determination of the nuclear weak-charge form factor that has widespread implications across such diverse areas as fundamental symmetries, nuclear structure, heavy-ion collisions, and neutron-star structure. Purpose: We assess the impact of precise measurements of the weak-charge form factor of 48Ca and 208Pb on a variety of nuclear observables, such as the neutron skin and the electric-dipole polarizability. Methods: We use the nuclear density functional theory with several accurately calibrated nonrelativistic and relativistic energy density functionals. To assess the degree of correlation between nuclear observables and to explore systematic and statistical uncertainties on theoretical predictions, we employ the chi-square statistical covariance technique. Results: We find a strong correlation between the weak-charge form factor and the neutron radius, that allows for an accurate determination of the neutron skin of neutron-rich nuclei. We determine the optimal range of the momentum transfer q that maximizes the information content of the measured weak-charge form factor and quantify the uncertainties associated with the strange quark contribution. Moreover, we confirm the role of the electric-dipole polarizability as a strong isovector indicator. Conclusions: Accurate measurements of the weak-charge form factor of 48Ca and 208Pb will have a profound impact on many aspects of nuclear theory and hadronic measurements of neutron skins of exotic nuclei at radioactive-beam facilities.
