The role of soil microorganisms in the turnover of chemical elements in terrestrial ecosystems

M. M. Umarov
Abstract:Soil microorganisms are principal geochemical agents not only on the land surface but also in the biosphere as a whole, which is associated with their high population in soils, significantly exceeding that in other biospheric components. The biogeochemical activity of microorganisms is several orders of magnitude higher, and their range of activity is significantly wider than those of macroorganisms (plants and animals). At least 65 chemical elements of the periodic table are involved in biochemical cycles performed by microorganisms.
