Abstract:We study edge-states in graphene systems where a bulk energy gap is opened by inversion symmetry breaking. We find that the edge-bands dispersion can be controlled by potentials applied on the boundary with unit cell length scale. Under certain boundary potentials, gapless edge-states with valley-dependent velocity are found, exactly analogous to the spin-dependent gapless chiral edge-states in quantum spin Hall systems. The connection of the edge-states to bulk topological properties is revealed.

Abstract:We demonstrate the coexistence of pseudospin- and valley-Hall-like edge states in a photonic crystal with C-3v symmetry, which is composed of three interlacing triangular sublattices with the same lattice constants. By tuning the geometry of the sublattices, three complete photonic band gaps with nontrivial topology can be created, one of which is due to the band inversion associated with the pseudospin degree of freedom at the Gamma point and the other two due to the gapping out of Dirac cones associated with the valley degree of freedom at the K, K' points. The system can support triband pseudospin- and valley-momentum locking edge states at properly designed domain-wall interfaces. Furthermore, to demonstrate the novel interplay of the two kinds of edge states in a single configuration, we design a four-channel system, where the unidirectional routing of electromagnetic waves against sharp bends between two routes can be selectively controlled by the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom. Our work combines the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom in a single configuration and may provide more flexibility in manipulating electromagnetic waves with promising potential for multiband and multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Periodically driven systems have displayed a variety of fascinating phenomena without analogies in static systems, which enrich the classification of quantum phases of matter and stimulate a wide range of research interests. Here, we employ discrete-time quantum walks to investigate a nontrivial topological effect unique to a two-dimensional periodically driven system: chiral edge states can exist at the interface of Floquet insulators whose Chern numbers vanish. Thanks to a resource-saving and flexible fiber-loop architecture, we realize inhomogeneous two-dimensional quantum walks up to 25 steps, over an effective 51 x 51 lattice with tunable local parameters. Spin-polarized chiral edge states are observed at the boundary of two distinct quantum walk domains. Our results contribute to establishing a well-controlled platform for exploring nontrivial topological phases.

Abstract:Universal chiral Luttinger liquid behavior has been predicted for fractional quantum Hall edge states, but so far has not been observed experimentally in semiconductor-based two-dimensional electron gases. One likely cause of this absence of universality is the generic occurrence of edge reconstruction in such systems, which is the result of a competition between confinement potential and Coulomb repulsion. We show that due to a completely different mechanism of confinement, edge reconstruction can be avoided in graphene, which allows for the observation of the predicted universality.

Abstract:Chiral edge states are a hallmark feature of two-dimensional topological materials. Such states must propagate along the edges of the bulk either clockwise or counterclockwise, and thus produce oppositely propagating edge states along the two parallel edges of a strip sample. However, recent theories have predicted a counterintuitive picture, where the two edge states at the two parallel strip edges can propagate in the same direction; these anomalous topological edge states are named as antichiral edge states. Here, we report the experimental observation of antichiral edge states in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal. The crystal consists of gyromagnetic cylinders in a honeycomb lattice, with the two triangular sublattices magnetically biased in opposite directions. With microwave measurement, unique properties of antichiral edge states have been observed directly, which include tilted dispersion, chiral-like robust propagation in samples with certain shapes, and 100% scattering into backward bulk states at certain terminations. These results extend and supplement the current understanding of chiral edge states.

Abstract:The frictionless, directional propagation of particles at the boundary of topological materials is one of the most striking phenomena in transport. These chiral edge modes lie at the heart of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects, and their extraordinary robustness against noise and disorder reflects the quantization of Hall conductivity in these systems. Despite their central importance, controllable injection of edge modes, and direct imaging of their propagation, structure, and dynamics, is challenging. Here, we demonstrate the distillation of individual chiral edge states in a rapidly-rotating bosonic superfluid confined by an optical boundary. Tuning the wall sharpness, we reveal the smooth crossover between soft wall behaviour in which the propagation speed is proportional to wall steepness, and the hard wall regime exhibiting chiral free particles. From the skipping motion of atoms along the boundary, we spectroscopically infer the energy gap between the ground and first excited edge bands, and reveal its evolution from the bulk Landau level splitting for a soft boundary, to the hard wall limit.

Abstract:Graphene properties can be manipulated by a periodic potential. Based on the tight-binding model, we study graphene under a one-dimensional modulated magnetic field which contains both a uniform and a staggered component. The chiral current-carrying edge states generated at the interfaces where the staggered component changes direction, lead to an unusual integer quantum Hall effect in graphene, which can be observed experimentally by a standard four-terminal Hall measurement. When Zeeman splitting is taken into account, an anomalous state is predicted where the electron edge currents with opposite spin polarization propagate in the opposite directions at one sample boundary, whereas propagate in the same directions at the other sample boundary. Furthermore, all the interface edge currents are fully spin polarized with the same spin direction, which is expected to have potential application in spintronic devices.
Absence of edge states at armchair edges in inhomogeneously strained graphene under a pseudomagnetic field

Abstract:Nonuniform strain in graphene can induce a pseudo-magnetic field (PMF) preserving time-reversal symmetry, generating pseudo-Landau levels under zero real magnetic field (MF). The different natures between PMF and real MF lead to the counterpropagating valley-polarized edge states under the PMF and unidirectionally chiral edge states under the real MF. In this work, we find, due to the valley mixing on the armchair edges, the quantum valley Hall edge states only exist at the zigzag edges but not at armchair edges in a uniaxial strained graphene, very different from the case that chiral quantum Hall edge states exist at all edges in pristine graphene under a real MF. We theoretically demonstrate it through the wave function distributions, multi-terminal transport measurements and the electron local occupations, respectively. The interface state in a p-n junction under PMF is further proposed to transport electrons between the conductive zigzag boundaries, which could be used as a valley-polarized single pole double throw switch.

The Universal Edge Physics in Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids

Abstract:The chiral Luttinger liquid theory for fractional quantum Hall edge transport predicts universal power-law behavior in the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics for electrons tunneling into the edge. However, it has not been unambiguously observed in experiments in two-dimensional electron gases based on GaAs/GaAlAs heterostructures or quantum wells. One plausible cause is the fractional quantum Hall edge reconstruction, which introduces non-chiral edge modes. The coupling between counterpropagating edge modes can modify the exponent of the I-V characteristics. By comparing the v = 1/3 fractional quantum Hall states in modulation-doped semiconductor devices and in graphene devices, we show that the graphene-based systems have an experimental accessible parameter region to avoid the edge reconstruction, which is suitable for the exploration of the universal edge tunneling exponent predicted by the chiral Luttinger liquid theory.

Abstract:The robust transport of edge modes is perhaps the most useful property of topological materials. The existence of edge modes is guaranteed by the bulk-edge correspondence, which states that the number of topological edge modes is determined by the bulk topological invariants. To obtain robust transport on the edge, we need to make volumetric changes to many bulk atoms to control the properties of a few edge atoms in a lower dimension. We suggest here that we can do the reverse in some cases: the properties of the edge can guarantee chiral transport phenomena in some bulk modes, achieving phenomena that are essentially the same as those observed in topological valley-Hall systems. Specifically, we show that a topologically trivial 2D hexagonal phononic crystal slab (waveguide) bounded by hardwall boundaries guarantees the existence of bulk modes with chiral anomaly inside a pseudogap. We experimentally observed robust valley-selected transport, complete valley state conversion, and valley focusing of the chiral anomaly bulk states (CABSs) in such phononic crystal waveguides.

Abstract:<p>We investigated the properties of the energy band and edge states of zigzag graphene nanoribbons with side gates and staggered sublattice potential. The staggered sublattice potential can introduce a bulk band gap, and there are flat bands directly connecting two Dirac points at the edge of the band gap. The addition of the side gate can make the flat band as a whole enter the bulk band gap, forming a transportable edge state, and because of the existence of the flat band, these transportable edge states are all localized near the two Dirac points, a helical edge state structure related to the valley is formed. Through the analysis of non-equilibrium Green's function, it is found that these valley-related edge states can lead to quantized Hall conductance. However, it should be emphasized that the edge states related to the valley Hall effect are not sensitively dependent on the depth of the flat band in the bulk band gap. Further by analyzing the relationship between the current of the system and the side gate, we found that the system has a very good topological edge state switching effect.</p>

Abstract:A central question in the field of graphene-related research is how graphene behaves when it is patterned at the nanometer scale with different edge geometries. Perhaps the most fundamental shape relevant to this question is the graphene nanoribbon (GNR), a narrow strip of graphene that can have different chirality depending on the angle at which it is cut. Such GNRs have been predicted to exhibit a wide range of behaviour (depending on their chirality and width) that includes tunable energy gaps and the presence of unique one-dimensional (1D) edge states with unusual magnetic structure. Most GNRs explored experimentally up to now have been characterized via electrical conductivity, leaving the critical relationship between electronic structure and local atomic geometry unclear (especially at edges). Here we present a sub-nm-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) study of GNRs that allows us to examine how GNR electronic structure depends on the chirality of atomically well-defined GNR edges. The GNRs used here were chemically synthesized via carbon nanotube (CNT) unzipping methods that allow flexible variation of GNR width, length, chirality, and substrate. Our STS measurements reveal the presence of 1D GNR edge states whose spatial characteristics closely match theoretical expectations for GNR's of similar width and chirality. We observe width-dependent splitting in the GNR edge state energy bands, providing compelling evidence of their magnetic nature. These results confirm the novel electronic behaviour predicted for GNRs with atomically clean edges, and thus open the door to a whole new area of applications exploiting the unique magnetoelectronic properties of chiral GNRs.

Abstract:A magnetic domain boundary on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator is predicted to host a chiral edge state, but direct demonstration is challenging. We used a scanning superconducting quantum interference device to show that current in a magnetized topological insulator heterostructure (EuS/Bi 2 Se 3 ) flows at the edge when the Fermi level is gate-tuned to the surface band gap. We further induced micrometer-scale magnetic structures on the heterostructure and detected a chiral edge current at the magnetic domain boundary. The chirality of the current was determined by magnetization of the surrounding domain, and its magnitude by the local chemical potential rather than the applied current. Such magnetic structures provide a platform for detecting topological magnetoelectric effects and may enable progress in quantum information processing and spintronics.

Abstract:Using a model Hamiltonian approach including electron-electron interactions, we systematically investigate the electronic structure and magnetic properties of chiral graphene nanoribbons. We show that the presence of magnetic edge states is an intrinsic feature of smooth graphene nanoribbons with chiral edges, and discover a number of structure-property relations. Specifically, we study the dependence of magnetic moments and edge-state energy splittings on the nanoribbon width and chiral angle as well as the role of environmental screening effects. Our results address a recent experimental observation of signatures of magnetic ordering in chiral graphene nanoribbons and provide an avenue towards tuning their properties via the structural and environmental degrees of freedom.

Abstract:The Dirac degeneracy of band structures, along with the valley states after breaking, holds promising potential for robust signal processing. However, the conventional graphene structure only harbors a single pair of Dirac points, limiting its capacity for information storage and manipulation, and hindering its application in small-sized on-chip devices. In this study, we experimentally investigate S-graphene acoustic crystals that host two pairs of Dirac points and valleys. By examining the interplay between these multivalley pairs, we observe double-kink edge states that display W-type and M-type dispersions self-guiding at zigzag- and bearded boundaries in a single sample, respectively, eliminating the requirement of a cladding layer in conventional valley Hall effect. Additionally, benefiting from the increased degree of freedom, a superdirectional yet adjustable topological antenna is demonstrated by selectively exciting a specific valley branch. This research expands the degree of freedom for valleytronics and has the potential to stimulate the exploration of multiple spin-valley couplings and the design of unique functional devices.

Abstract:The chiral edge current is the boundary manifestation of the Chern number of a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator. Its direct observation is assumed to require well-quantized Hall conductance, and is so far lacking. The recently discovered van der Waals antiferromagnet MnBi2Te4 is theorized as a QAH in odd-layers but has shown Hall resistivity below the quantization value at zero magnetic field. Here, we perform scanning superconducting quantum interference device (sSQUID) microscopy on these seemingly failed QAH insulators to image their current distribution. When gated to the charge neutral point, our device exhibits edge current, which flows unidirectionally on the odd-layer boundary both with vacuum and with the even-layer. The chirality of such edge current reverses with the magnetization of the bulk. Surprisingly, we find the edge channels coexist with finite bulk conduction even though the bulk chemical potential is in the band gap, suggesting their robustness under significant edge-bulk scattering. Our result establishes the existence of chiral edge currents in a topological antiferromagnet and offers an alternative for identifying QAH states.

Abstract:Chirally stacked N-layer graphene systems with N≥2 exhibit a variety of distinct broken symmetry states in which charge density contributions from different spins and valleys are spontaneously transferred between layers. We explain how these states are distinguished by their charge, spin, and valley Hall conductivities, by their orbital magnetizations, and by their edge state properties. We argue that valley Hall states have [N/2] edge channels per spin valley.
Topological Chiral Edge States in a Synthetic Dimension of Atomic Trap States

Abstract:A key hallmark of quantum Hall physics is the existence of topological chiral states at the system boundary. Signatures of these edge states have been experimentally observed in cold atoms by using different approaches, including notably that of ``synthetic dimension'' in which internal states are coupled together and reinterpreted as sites along an artificial spatial dimension. However, previous atomic synthetic dimension implementations have been limited to relatively small system sizes with inflexible boundaries. In this paper, we propose instead how to use a synthetic dimension of atomic trap states to observe chiral edge states in a large quantum Hall system with a tunable edge. We present numerical simulations for relevant experimental parameters, showing how this scheme may be used to probe the properties and robustness of the edge states to defects. Our work opens the way for future experiments in topological physics with synthetic dimensions, while also providing new ways to manipulate and control highly-excited trap states.

Abstract:While usual edge states in the quantum Hall effect(QHE) reside between adjacent Landau levels, QHE in graphene has a peculiar edge mode at E=0 that reside right within the n=0 Landau level as protected by the chiral symmetry. We have theoretically studied the edge states to show that the E=0 edge mode, despite being embedded in the bulk Landau level, does give rise to a wave function whose charge is accumulated along zigzag edges. This property, totally outside continuum models, implies that the graphene QHE harbors edges distinct from ordinary QHE edges with their topological origin. In the charge accumulation the bulk states re-distribute their charge significantly, which may be called a topological compensation of charge density. The real space behavior obtained here should be observable in an STM imaging.
