Abstract:Four pyrene-functionalized polyacetylenes were designed and prepared through a typical post-polymerization modification route, which is the highly efficient reaction between activated ester and primary anime groups. The chemical structures of the resultant polymers were characterized with multiple spectroscopic techniques and the data indicated the successful functionalization of the polyacetylenes. The introduction of the pyrene moieties into the polymer structure allowed us to investigate the interactions between the polymer backbone and side chains. For the mono-substituted polyacetylenes, both the monomer and excimer emission features of the pyrene groups could be recorded, while for the di-substituted polyacetylenes, the fluorescence from the pyrene excimer vanished and the fluorescence intensity from the pyrene monomer decreased, the fluorescence from the polymer chain predominated the emission features. The concomitant energy transfer from the pyrene monomer and excimer to poly(diphenylacetylene) backbone was associated with the underlying mechanism. In addition to the substitution modes, the linkage between the poly(diphenylacetylene) backbone and the pyrene moiety also played a significant role in the determination of the emission species. A long alkyl spacer was beneficial to the pyrene monomer emission while a short one may be helpful to the formation of the excimer and intramolecular energy transfer.
Dithenylpyrrole Structure Bridged with Phenyl or Biphenyl Rings: Molecular Configuration and Electrochromic Properties

Abstract:A series of multi-branched dithienylpyrrole (SNS) monomers with rigid phenyl (PhSNS) and biphenyl rings (BPhSNS) as bridges were designed and synthesized, and were fabricated to form cross-linked polymers (pPhSNS, pBPhSNS) by electrochemical polymerization. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) results showed that PhSNS and BPhSNS exhibited similar oxidative properties except for one new higher-potential oxidative peak appearing in the curves of PhSNS. Theoretical calculations indicated that it should be attributed to the different steric configuration between the two dithienylpyrrole (SNS) units in PhSNS. One SNS unit possessed a larger twist angle (40.2 degrees) between thiophene and pyrrole rings than the other one (21.2 degrees), which indicated that PhSNS possessed a relatively larger energy gap (similar to 0.4 eV) between HOMO-1 and HOMO than BPhSNS, for which HOMO and HOMO-1 levels were of almost the same energy. However, both PhSNS and BPhSNS showed similar onset oxidation potentials. The CV curves of pPhSNS and pBPhSNS showed that they presented similar oxidative properties, which enabled their corresponding electrochemical polymers to exhibit similar electrochromic properties. The UV-vis spectra of the corresponding polymers showed that both pPhSNS and pBPhSNS possessed similar optical absorption and similar multicolor switching between yellow (-0.8 V), greyish-green (0.9 V) and gray (1.1 V) colors. Besides, pPhSNS and pBPhSNS showed fast switching times of 0.57 s and 0.93 s at 1100 nm, respectively and reasonable contrasts of 46% and 31% at 1100 nm, respectively. These investigations may help understand the relationship between structural configuration and the electrochemistry/electrochromic properties for polymer electrochromic (PEC) materials research.

Abstract:Three star-shaped thiophene derivatives, namely TPAT, PHT and TPTT with different central cores of triphenylamine, phenyl and 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine respectively, were synthesized and characterized. They were further successfully prepared into the corresponding cross-linked polymers pTPAT, pPHT and pTPTT via electrochemical polymerization. The cyclic voltammetry curves showed that pPHT and pTPTT displayed the relatively higher onset oxidative potentials than pTPAT. After being applied with the positive voltages in an electrochemical cell, pTPAT exhibited the obvious electrochromic behaviors, while such phenomenons were not observed in the case of pPHT and pTPTT. The theory calculation results together with the electrochemistry properties revealed that the electrochromism of pTPAT may mainly depend on its relatively lower oxidative potential because of the introduction of triphenylamine with low ionization energy. Through the copolymerization with 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) which is also of relatively low ionization energy, pPHT-EDOT and pTPTT-EDOT both exhibited excellent electrochromic properties. Abstract:Electrochromic small molecules suffer from the difficult film processibility and serious dissolvability at their oxidation state, which greatly limit their applications in electrochromic areas. Here, well-defined electrochemical polymer structures, pCZ-FSQ and pCZ-FEQ, are obtained by taking advantage of the unique electrochemical dimerization of carbazole, and low redox-potential phenothiazine and phenoxazine groups are introduced as an electrochromic color-changing unit with the interruption of conjugation between them via an alkyl chain linkage. The obtained polymer films pCZ-FSQ and pCZ-FEQ are composed of the independent dimeric carbazole and organic small molecule units. Finally, they exhibit outstanding electrochromic properties with optical contrast of more than 50%, switching time of less than 1 s, excellent stability (over 500 cycles of optical stability), and ultrahigh coloration efficiency (276 cm(2) C-1 for pCZ-FSQ(,) 384 cm(2) C-1 for pCZ-FEQ). This is thought to be greatly attributed to the well-defined electrochemical polymer structures with dual electrochromic color-changing properties of both phenothiazine/phenoxazine and dimeric carbazole. This can also provide some implications for the future in-depth study of small molecule electrochromism and the solution to the problem of difficult processing of small molecules.
Simple Efficient Synthesis of Strongly Luminescent Polypyrene with Intrinsic Conductivity and High Carbon Yield by Chemical Oxidative Polymerization of Pyrene.

Abstract:A wholly aromatic polypyrene was synthesized by direct chemical oxidative polymerization of pyrene with ferric chloride as oxidant in hexane/nitromethane. Successful synthesis of polypyrene was thoroughly confirmed by IR, UV/Vis, 1D (1)H NMR, 2D (1)H-(1)H COSY, 2D (1)H-(13)C HSQC, MALDI-TOF MS, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction methods. The results indicated that the polypyrene was formed mainly through dehydro coupling between 2- or 1- and 2'- or 1'-positions on pyrene rings having a degree of polymerization of around 24. The polypyrene was purified and then separated into THF-soluble (ca. 10 %) and THF-insoluble (ca. 90 %) fractions. Compared with insulating pyrene monomer, the polypyrene is a controllably conducting polymer that has low conductivity of 3.4x10(-8) S cm(-1) in its virgin state, moderate conductivity of 2.28x10(-4) S cm(-1) upon iodine doping, but much higher conductivity of up to 81.2 S cm(-1) after the insoluble polypyrene was heated up to 1300 degrees C in nitrogen with a high char yield of 70.6 %. In particular, the soluble polypyrene demonstrates much stronger visible color fluorescence and much lower toxicity than pyrene. The soluble polypyrene would be advantageous for detecting Fe(3+) with almost no interference of other metal ions. The soluble and insoluble polypyrene fractions have potential applications as intrinsically luminescent and highly conducting carbon materials, respectively.

Abstract:We report here the synthesis and luminescent properties of a new, solution-processable conjugated polymer (PPE2). The absorption, PL and EL spectra have been investigated. The results indicate that the hexyl unit interrupts the conjugation and thereby effects the energy band gap of the corresponding PPE1. Effective interruption of π-conjugation of PPE1 at the hexyl unit linkage was further confirmed by spectroscopic comparison with the model compound. X-ray diffraction measurements on both pristine and annealed sample show that the polymer does not exit long-rang order and crystallinity. Electroluminescence (EL) in the green region of the spectrum with a maximum at 520 nm was observed from the polymer film sandwiched between indium-tin-oxide and Al electrodes.
Electrochemic and Photophysics Properties of Pyridine-Based Electron Transmission Material

Abstract:A pyridine-based polybenzobisoxazole (PBOPy) was synthesized via solution condensation polymerization. The polymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, electrochemical cyclic voltammetry, and time-resolved PL decay dynamics. Results showed that the introduction of pyridine groups made the oxidation potential (1.82eV) relatively larger than that of poly(p-phenylenebenzobisoxazole) (PBO) (1.65eV), while the reduction potential (1.18eV) was smaller than that of PBO (1.28eV). It can be concluded, by comparing UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and PL spectroscopy of PBOPy in film and in methanesulfonic acid (MSA), that PBOPy has a stronger protonation effect in the latter. The optical properties of PBOPy exhibited a PL emission band at 473nm in thin films and a strong orange fluorescence (498nm) after being protonated with MSA. The protonation effect resulted in a large Stokes shift, about 71nm.
A NEW CONDUCTIVE POLYPHOSPHAZENE CONTAINING PYRROLE GROUP AND ITS CHEMICAL OXIDATIVE POLYMERIZATION

Abstract:Reactive inorganic polymer-poly(dichloro)phosphazene was prepared through ring-opening polymerization at high temperature. Then a new conductive polyphosphazene containing pyrrole group was synthesized by nucleophilic reaction between the inorganic polymer and N-hydroxyethylpyrrole. The chemical structure and properties of all polymers were characterized by NMR(()~1H,()~(31)P),FT-IR,DSC,TGA and GPC. Using FeCl_3 as oxidiant, the polymer film underwent crosslinking reaction to form conjugated polypyrrole. The experimental results indicate that: the molecular weight of pyrrole-containing soluble polymer are _n=4.1×10~5, _w=(9.2)×10~5(_w/_n=(2.24)), and the T_g is (-36) ℃. The soluble polymer is an excellent film-former. After oxidative reaction, the color of polymer film turned into light black from almost transparent and the conductivity was determined to be (1.7)×10~(-5) S/cm, it is 10~5 times greater than that of the original film. The crosslinked polymer shows high thermal stability.

Abstract:A series of novel asymmetrical pyrene derivatives with aralkyl and aldehyde groups have been successfully synthesized, and their spectroscopic parameters were investigated detailedly. The effects of aralkyl substituent amounts on the electronic absorption and emission spectra have been explored in evaluation of their potential as optical materials components. Moreover, the electrochemical properties of the new pyrene derivatives have been studied for the molecules' HOMO and LUMO levels by cyclic voltammograms. In particular, titration of anhydrous ethanol into dilute CH2Cl2 solution of above compounds, an unusual change of the fluorescence value was observed. The change is believed to correlate strongly to intermolecular charge transfer. The morphological evolution of self-assembled pyrene derivatives with (arylethynyl)aldehyde substituents, from tamen-distinct-like morphologies to vesicular textures, was obtained by increasing aralkyl-substituted fragments. These asymmetrical discotic compounds represent an interesting set of candidates for optoelectronic device components.

Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy)–poly(ether urethane) (PEU) and PPy–poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) composite films were prepared by the electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole on LiClO4-containing PEU and EVOH films coated on indium–tin oxide (ITO), respectively. The electrochromic device composed of ITO-coated glass/PPy–PEU (or PPy–EVOH) composite film/LiClO4-containing PEU (as a solid polymer electrolyte)/ITO-coated glass was fabricated and the electrochromic properties were characterized. As a result, the device using PPy–PEU composite film showed a larger difference of transmittance (ΔT) at 800 nm between the doped and undoped states, and a shorter response time than the device using PPy–EVOH film. On the contrary, the latter device had a longer cycle lifetime under the repeated application of pulsed voltage (±3 V, 1 Hz). These electrochromic behaviors were discussed in connection with the properties of the used matrix polymers.

Abstract:A series of dipolar 1,3,6,8-tetrasubstituted pyrene-based compounds ( PyTPA , PyCaZ and Py3CaZ ) with a D-π-A configuration were designed and synthesized. The characteristic of these report compounds is that the pyrene core possesses two electron-transporting benzimidazole moieties at 1,8-positions and two hole-transporting arylamine segments at 3,6-sites. These compounds were structurally characterized and their photoelectric properties were investigated by spectroscopy, electrochemical and theoretical studies. The intermolecular π-π interactions successfully suppressed in these polysubstituted pyrenes, which leads to relatively high absolute fluorescence quantum efficiencies in film state (73.89–85.74 %). These three compounds exhibit high thermal stability with their decomposition temperature up to 520 °C. Two types of solution-processing devices were fabricated using compounds PyTPA and Py3CaZ as representatives to investigate their electron-transporting, hole-transporting and light-emitting properties. The single layer device based on PyTPA exhibits a current efficiency of 8.02 cd/A and a maximum brightness of 24439 cd/m 2 at 7.8 V.

Alternating Pyrene–fluorene Linear Copolymers: Influence of Non-Conjugated and Conjugated Pyrene on Thermal and Optoelectronic Properties

Abstract:In order to explore the influence of non-conjugated and conjugated pyrene on the properties of polymers, four alternating pyrene-fluorene linear copolymers, PDOF-PPF, PDAOPF-PPF, PDOF-P and PDAOPF-P (Scheme 1), were designed, synthesized and characterized. They show greatly higher thermal stability than their oligomers due to curving of polymer chain. They also show high T-g due to high internal rotation barrier originated from large pyrene group. For non-conjugated pyrene substituted PDOF-PPF and PDAOPF-PPF, absorption spectra show sharp peak at about 354 nm, which should be attributed to intramolecular interaction of pyrene and main conjugation. And in contrast, conjugated pyrene substituted PDOF-P and PDAOPF-P show structureless spectra. They also show stable spectra even annealed due to the high internal rotation barrier originated from pyrene. The spectra data are consistent with electrochemical and calculated data. It proves that conjugated pyrene plays much less contribution to frontier orbitals than non-conjugated pyrene. At last, the polymers were used as emitter to fabricated PLEDs, and the devices showed low onset voltage of about 4V, with maximum brightness of 1050 and 1520 cd/m(2) for PDOF-PPF and PDAOPF-PPF as emitters. Abstract:The modification of polypyrrole by copolymerization is reviewed in both ways: the properties and the application of the copolymer. Through copolymerization of pyrrole and other monomers, the conductive pyrrole copolymer nanoparticles with some special properties can be obtained, namely solubility, electrical and mechanical property, thermostability, biocompatibility and electrochromism. These pyrrole copolymers have been used in conductive nanocomposite films, biomedicial engineering and metal anticorrosion.

Abstract:The electrooptical and electrochemical properties of a self-dopable ionic conjugated polyacetylene, poly(2-ethynylpyridinium-N-benzoylsulfonate) (PEPBS), were studied. The photoluminescence spectra of the polymer showed that the photoluminescence peak was located at 545 nm corresponding to the photon energy of 2.27 eV. The cyclic voltammograms of the polymer exhibited reversible electrochemical behaviors between the doped and undoped peaks. It was found from the dependence of the oxidation current density of the polymer on scan rate that the kinetics of the redox process was diffusion-controlled. The electrical conductivity (σ) of undoped PEPBS was 5.7 × 10−9 S/cm.

Abstract:Pyrene was electrochemically polymerized in the mixed electrolytes of boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BFEE) containing a certain amount of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) with molar mass of 400g (PEG 400). The oxidation potential of pyrene in these media was measured to be approximately 0.65V (vs. SCE), which was much lower than that detected in a neutral electrolyte such as acetonitrile (1.15V vs. SCE). The structure of the product was studied by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization/time-of-flight (MALDI/TOF) mass spectroscopy, UV–Vis, infrared and Raman spectroscopies. The results indicated that the product was composed of oligomers formed by α,α-coupling of the pyrene rings, and could be called as oligopyrene. The as-grown oligopyrene films showed microstructures with morphology like spheres, nanosheet networks and cups. The oligopyrene is electrochemically active and can emit strong blue light, which provide potential applications in fabrication of organic electronic displays and electroluminescent devices.

Abstract:Three pyrene fused PDI derivatives have been obtained, in which totally different properties were observed when adopting different fusing types. For bilaterally benzannulated PDIs, through spin-coating, bottom-contact OFET devices exhibited a p-type mobility up to 1.13 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), with an on/off ratio of 10(8) in air.

Abstract:We describe herein the electrochemical characterization and polymerization of 4-pyren-1-yl-butyric acid 11-pyrrol-1-yl-decyl ester (pyrrole–pyrene) in CH3CN. The electrochemical oxidation of the pyrrole group at 0.77V vs Ag/Ag+10mM in CH3CN led to the first example of a fluorescent polypyrrole film. The mechanism of deposition on platinum electrode was studied by voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The optical properties of the polymeric films electrogenerated on ITO electrodes were examined by UV–visible spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy indicating an increase in fluorescence properties by increased polymer thickness. The electrochemical oxidation of pyrenyl group linked to the polypyrrole backbone was carried out at 1.2V. This additional polymerization was demonstrated by UV–visible spectroscopy and induced the loss of the fluorescence properties of the resulting polymeric film.
